- Ever since the discovery of whale songs almost 60 years ago, scientists have been trying to decipher the lyrics.
But sperm whales don’t produce the eerie melodies sung by humpback whales, sounds that became a sensation (www.nytimes.com/1970/05/26/ar...) in the 1960s. Instead, sperm whales rattle off clicks that sound like a cross between Morse code and a creaking door.
Carl Zimmer, a science reporter, explains the possibility why it’s possible that the whales are communicating in a complex language.
Guest: Carl Zimmer (www.nytimes.com/by/carl-zimmer) , a science reporter for The New York Times who also writes the Origins column (www.nytimes.com/column/origins) .
Background reading
• Scientists find an “alphabet” in whale songs. (www.nytimes.com/2024/05/07/sc...)
• These whales still use their vocal cords. But how? (www.nytimes.com/2024/02/21/sc...)

During migrations mother humpbackshave been observed teaching their calves coastal landmarks to recognize on the next migration
Are they listening to us? And is our vocal behavior being filtered through whale presumptions?
Aren't there documented changes to their "language" and use of a common 3rd party language when they hunt with different kinds of whales etc.? Ravens and many birds are well documented to use repetitive noises in certain situations and are assumed to be using a language as well. I am confused on why the interview seems to imply this is brand new information and cutting edge. When Whales from different parts of the world hunt together, they have a 3rd party language specifically for those interactions. Ravens have a word for cats. I am confused on why this interview seems to imply this is new information. It's incredibly old information
It's new to me ! So this interview is relevant to bring awareness to the language of the animal kingdom whether we findings of old information.
Tap, tap, tap-tap-tap. That's Pat, Boone, Deb-bie-Boone. Beato.
Japan just a few days ago christened their. Newest whaler ship. The armaments have AI analysis for tracking. And anticipating where whales are going. So that they can be found easier, more efficiently.
Sigh.
Damn.
The Japanese have traveled a long way from their Zen/Shinto roots. It seems the entire world now is basing life's philosophy on materialism and the Poetry of life is going fast
The AI is not magic. Expectations seem to be rather high...
