  • This week, Karim Khan, the top prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, requested arrest warrants for Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and the country’s defense minister, Yoav Gallant.
Patrick Kingsley, the Times’s bureau chief in Jerusalem, explains why this may set up a possible showdown between the court and Israel with its biggest ally, the United States.
Guest: Patrick Kingsley (www.nytimes.com/by/patrick-ki...) , the Jerusalem bureau chief for The New York Times.
    Background reading:
    • Why did a prosecutor go public with the arrest warrant requests (www.nytimes.com/2024/05/22/wo...) ?
    • The warrant request appeared to shore up domestic support (www.nytimes.com/2024/05/21/wo...) for Mr. Netanyahu.

    • @gibransirat8454
      @gibransirat8454 23 дня назад

Yeah, there is a shocking no of sentences that start with "of course Idf says that........", "there are Israeli officials threatening starvation but Israel would argue that..., "ICC has collected evidence but Israel says that the jurisdiction......",
There is also a noticeable exchange where the two falsely claim that the ICC case hinges on Starvation when there are other charges of indiscriminately and deliberately targeting civilians.
But then I have to remind myself that this is NYT which published a now debunked atrocity propaganda and stands by it. A story that was openly used to fuel the mass murder of palestinians in the last 8 months.

I am surprised and disenchanted about the NYT. I am impressed the clear conceptual gymnastics you are doing to fit a bias editorial line...you scarcely do this kind of things (NYT has one of the smartest balanced journalism, in my opinion) , but I imagine regarding this topic the political pressure on you is huge...I read the full text of the ICC filling, I learn the Lawyers who gave council to make it (top notch), and the evidence presented.
Besides, International press is not allowed to check first hand the situation, regarding these allegations, if everything is so clear to Israeli Gov, why do not allowed to be reported in situ?
Why do you do not mention all this points? additionally, each day passes, analyzing, the death and destruction toll in Gaza continues, justice has to be expedite, preventive, not forensic, a posteriori. Israeli Courts are mentioned not to be efficient regarding lawsuits on the West Bank (you also do not mention it)...

The starvation accusation against Netanyahu is also less controversial and less likely to cause other western powers to oppose it in a self-protective way. If the aerial bombardments were used then the US or European NATO members, for instance, would fear supporting the action could backfire in the future.
    -------
Netanyahu makes some weird parallels ... both Hitler and Franklin Roosevelt were dead before WWII ended ... also, right after 9/11 there was no reason to issue arrest warrants for George Bush - something that would soon change starting with the invasion of Afghanistan and later with the invasion of Iraq.
Franklin Roosevelt had a project for international order that would put 4 powers as the main enforcers of decisions by the UN - the four policemen (US, UK, USSR and China). I think Roosevelt really believed that moral uthority was more effective than military power - and he also knew that the costs involved would take the US into an economic crisis that could end up eating the American democracy away. The man was elected 4 times and that requires the ability to see far into the future!

A very interesting line taken by The Daily.
The world court's decision has served to close ranks within Israel so it's had the opposite effect. I want to know, so far, what did those so called divisions within israeli cabinet do for the civilians in Gaza, for its women and children and for its doctors. It's a comforting fantasy some engage in when they impose a liberal view on the occupation, on Israel's countless assaults and massacres of palestinians. There is no liberal vs right in Israel when it comes to the palestinians. There is unanimity in the overall genocidal intent toward the pali population.

As a person living in Israel, it may have closed ranks in those already prone to the right, but, at least on my socials, people are eager for the arrest warrant to be enforced, at least with regards to Netanyahu (not to mention the Hamas leaders).
Also, I definitely wish no harm to Palestinian civilians.

@@korenmoscovich4681 I don't doubt there are organisations of that sort in Israel (thank God for those good people), but it would be wrong to take that as evidence of a general split within israeli society regarding the political and Human rights of palestinians. There is a plurality if not a majority of people within Israel, evidenced by recent polls during this war, who wish to either resettle Gaza or want the IDF to flatten it, both of which imply a form of ethnic cleansing of palestinians. All of this doesn't even begin to cover the WestBank.
