This video discusses the prospects of the 2022 Classic Tetris World Championship. The tournament format spawned from the 1990 Classic Tetris World Championship, and has since gone on to form a reputation of it's own. The "Boom Tetris for Jeff" meme videos caused a new generation to swarm the scene, starting with Joseph Saelee and the hypertapping playstyle in 2018. Now, with the new technique of rolling invented by Cheez, players are able to go head to head past the killscreen, attempting to best their opponent in terms of points and levels.

I think people underestimate the crowd pressure, it will be totally different to play in the safety of your room against being surrounded by a cheering crowd. And example of this could be MKleo who underperformed in smashbros during the online tournaments but destroys everyone with the crowd behind. In that regard, i think Joseph could totally stand a chance to win it all.

ok, but for real, I think it's a bit different now, as consistency in rolling can be shown by one game alone. Hydrantdude barely scratched the killscreen compared to the guys today, so one game with 1.6 mil doesn't really show the same capability on playing on the killscreen.
also i think there is more time untill the event starts then there was when hydrant got the wr. so more time to practice.

Every month I watch CTM, a new player seems to be peaking. I feel like the winner of CTWC will be the player who just happens to be peaking around the time of that tournament. And I don't believe that the winner will be a player who just tries to outlast their opponents in 29+. That will win some games, but I predict that the champion will successfully combine 29 survival with a good amount of aggression and Tetris scoring.

This is to help them with rolling on the controller. The friction generated by the fingers can be inconsistent (and can actually hurt over the long term), so players moved towards gloved play on their rolling hand to up consistency, and nearly every top rolling player uses one nowadays.

DAS players already had major constrains with trying to squeeze out as many points before the killscreen, but now any half decent roller can easily exceed that potential.
