  • From the Wheel In Motion DVD. The song is from 'The Big Wheel'(1991).
When you close your eyes there's a frightened pride that lives for you
That your mother's life and your father's eyes can't hide
You had no choice didn't ask the dice too fall for you
Still your courage comes like thunder through the skies
You're always the winner, the victor and the giver
Somewhere through that winter you'll never be alone
    For evermore the winner
    The taker and the giver
Somewhere through that winter you will not grow old
So you carry time down the tortured line where mysteries show
Well hidden from life's learned and life's wise
Mans useless ways and worthless conversation
Lie well exposed and humbled in your smile
    (Chorus)

memories of running off to the Hebrides to escape from a broken heart and an impossible situation, this song still has the power, like now, to reduce me to tears. The impossible situation resolved itself, bthe broken heart only muted itself, resurfaces at times when my defenses are down

Runrig ~ Always The Winner. When you close your eyes there's
    A frightened pride that lives
For you. That your mothers life
    And your fathers eyes can't
Hide. You had no choice didn't
Ask the dice too fall for you.
    Still your courage comes like
    Thunder through the skies. So
You carry time down the tortured
    Line where mysteries show. Well
    Hidden from lifes learned and
    Lifes wise. Mans useless ways
    And worthless conversation lie
Well exposed and humbled in your
    Smile. Always the winner, the
    Victor and the giver. Somewhere
    Through that winter you'll never
    Be alone. For evermore the
Winner. The taker and the giver.
    Somewhere through that winter
You will not grow old. Still you
Run out in the morning with the
Boys and the girls. The miracle
Of innocence on a head of curls.
    We'll search every reason
Wherever we roam to find a place
    For these broken hearts and
Bones. We'll keep a fire on the
    Hillsides after the summers gone
And we'll wait here till the
    War-wounded come home.

Forgive me if my interpretation is wrong, but to my mind this is a deeply religious song, addressed to Christ and telling of the eternal victory that belongs to Him-even through the winter of sin that will engulf the earth until He comes again and takes His war-weary people home. It begins in address to the young Christ who lived among us all those years ago, at once an ordinary boy and a "miracle of innocence". He already knows of the dark fate set in store for Him, and yet is filled with courage to meet it. The smile that humbles and exposes suggests His simple message of love, worth infinitely more than any philosophy man could come up with, despite what the world's learned and wise may think. Further clues are provided by lines like "the taker and the giver", which clearly echo biblical language.

I am led to believe that the song was written for a boy by the name of David Gibson who died as a result of leukemia (A family member) He passed away in the early 1990's.
