Look at the wear on the heads! So precise
This man blew my mind with the way he fit the 9/8s and 5/8s into a 4/4... The simple creative things like that that Gavin does makes him such an amazingly creative drummer. He puts so much thought into everything. I've learned so much just by watching his stuff, I hope that one day I can match his skill.
What a nice fella. Very nice and smooth. I enjoy his style immensely. He's doing a clinic in my town in two weeks. Gonna be there.
2:34 - evidence of absolutely insane understanding of every note he plays. like, his breakdown of the rythmic, mathematical stuff he's playing is simply genius. such a master.
@In it For the Memes You've just proven that you are the stupid one.
Funny thing is I'm a guitarist watching drum lessons because Gavin is the most melodic drummer I've ever heard!!! I could listen to him play ALL DAMN DAY LONG!!
i don't know what i love more, his tuning, his technique, his pocket, or his humbleness! The guy's a God!
I only play the guitar but listening to stuff like this even helps expand my creative thought process. I have always been curious as to song/rhythm writing, and I hope more and more bands/writers begin to display their process in creating their art for 'students' to observe, learn from, and expand on. Thanks for posting - Cheers 'Tim
I would recomend this video to a several Gramy winners,,, and me, obviously after watching this I will burn my set , cut my hands , and never get near a drum set . Thank you gavin .
GENIUS, I will now give up playing drums or should i say trying to play drums and go back to playing the triangle.
This dude is a class act! Straight forward drummer yet complex.
I saw and met Gavin at a drum clinic in Manchester on tuesday. I really advise anyone to go see his drum clinics. He has a great personality and sense of humor =) God of drums and a really nice person.
Astonishing. So simple and yet so creative. Thank you!
This is the thing about Gavin. He could be taking Math classes at University, and the all of the students would understand and love his stuff. Such a consummate master of his art!
I love this guy.. and Porcupine tree
@IchMagSechs That's fair, they're both definitely masters of their craft and love odd meter, and are two of my favorite drummers with mind-boggling prowess.
who else was really thrown by his variation when he put it into four, and then the quote "it was gonna have to be something like that" you madman!
he posted on fb recently how he was at edinburgh (i live an hour away) recently.. suuuuucks :/ would love to go see him, brilliant drummer. great influence.
Thank u Gavin new fan here genius playing sir
the simethrical thing gives me chills and blows my brains
@psychofunksoldier02 lol 'Same thing here! The thing is besides all that advanced drumming he always grooves supporting the music; other drummers just sound technical to me.
Holy shit! I just noticed the wear on his skins. All his hits are amazingly tight.
I think people like his playing for many reasons. His drums sound great! He can play very simply and tasteful, yet he can play something wickedly complex and it always feels smooth. He is very versatile. Check out his recordings with the band incognito...and Porcupine Tree. But, for me his playing always fits the music. And I think that makes him a great drummer. Just my 2 cents.
Awesome 👏
Truly amazing!
You, sir, are such a monster.
Felt like learning how to play the drums
Now I want to cut my hands off
Gavin is a master in his art
@lizardx10 As Gavin has quoted before: Luck is simply when preparation meets opportunity.
this is going to be in my favourites. and in my playlist called: instand headache
Amazing!
Jesus Gavin you really know how to make things complicated.
He has an amazing mind
EXCELENTE, HARRISON = GOD OF DRUMS
look at the damage on his heads. The spots are so specific. He's a machine.
@Siyates747 Well said my brotha! i totaly agree with that list! although it will change when the new tool album comes out.
My Tama set is set up like that. I feel really comfortable with it.
@hawkmoon666
Well... the drummers I was using for my "opinion" are all associated with progressive rock (besides Buddy Rich). So "Remotely" they do fall under the same category. Both are what I would consider MUSICIANS since they both...... play music? They have different styles but, both have proven to show extraordinary creativity in their own way. So, I think they both deserve to be credited as great drummers.
nice and clean :)
This is how creativity works ;)
This is what made my mind up to purchase a Sonor SQ2. Nothing short of brilliant drum kits.. Mine sounds equally as good as this.. however Gavin's micing techniques get him such an amazing sound.. Not to mention his obvious talent. Three mics on the kick. One is a lapel mic that hangs inside an empty water container in front of his kick.. this is his sub tone... I mean seriously WTF! Gavin your a freak!
still love it!!
@tijlorion Yes, I know. He tunes them perfectly! ;-)
How does he do those beautiful double strokes at 5:26? His snare roll is just amazing and he barely moves his hands! Anyone knows what technique is he using?
@VittorioSergi drop...its his colaberation with o5ric
@DeadlyNinjaDrummer
Watching technical drummers always makes my head spin.
I prefer my instrument only taking up two limbs.
Genius.
@3runMX He's just playing diddles relatively fast. It's exactly what you said, he's just playing low doubles.
Damn, my math teacher was right..... it's used for everything.
i wish he'd just come to my house and idk talk n stuff
I have always played Evans drum heads but every time I hear that particular snare head it sounds so good to me. Is it a Remo Emperor X?
He is really the drummer we all want to be
@Zenerdi my point exactly
@FeathersT21 haha, seriously, every single stroke double stroke is so tight it's not even funny! he really inspired me to get my singles and doubles nice tight and strong
look at the marks on his heads! he's so accurate he could replace lasers!
yes
@shiznoes
yes... yes he did....
that just blew my fuckin mind
@MagicAccent Thats the easy way out haha. The more limbs that are at work, the more possibilities there are.
@IchMagSechs whats up with tool in january album?
bom, muito bom!
yes Gavin, it's VERY easy
@shiznoes
...He can play dida dida bop.
@hawkmoon666 I agree, the clinic videos where Harrison talks about his playing style are really interesting and open up the "basis" of his playing. I think that Portnoy lacks the elegance Harrison has. While listening to (especially newer) DT albums and concentrating to the drumming I just feel that Portnoy tries to be in the spotlight instead of giving the listener a constant pulse to follow. As a non drummer I also find Harrison's playing a lot easier to enjoy.
There was Buddy Rich, NEIL PEART, Mike Portnoy/Danny Carey, I think GAVIN HARRISON is holding the torch now.
good))
3:45 One pedal (and there's a smooth edit)
3:50 Two pedals
no there are two beaters the whole time - you just dont see the second one in that angle from above. And it doenst make sense to unmount the second beater from a double pedal, when you use it frequently ^^
@jonas227 that's what she said.
God he's so fucking cool
Once he said that one of his teachers made him practice rudiments on a pad by hitting a coin that was sticked at the center, just to be more accurate.
Were did he get that bass drum beater?
@Siyates747 I didn't explain myself well. They are of course comparable but, and mind you it's my opinion, Gavin Harrision is way more mature in his approach and has a far better taste in music then Mike will ever have. It's not only a matter of how techincally good you are but also of what you play. Gavin is a musician in the sense that he plays with the band and for the band without playing one note more than what is appropriate. (go watch Anesthetize live for reference).
what album is he talking about?
@Siyates747 honestly, and I am a HUGE DT fan, you cannot even remotely think about putting Portnoy at the same level of Gavin. Portnoy is a metalhead who learnt to play the drums VERY well. Gavin is a musician. It's not a matter of technique but of taste, expression and execution. Gavin is just out of his league.
@FeathersT21 i thought the same damn thing
Please upload a video of your perfect drumset and godly drumming, I beg of you. While your at it make a solo album with a video analysis of the drumming in the album. And remember, be sure it isn't childish or overrated.
9/8 + 9/8 + 9/8 + 5/8 = genius
🙏🙏🙏💪👌✅🥁
What band is this song from? Ric05?
You ever get the snare in the stand and feel like it's not going anywhere so you don't get it completely snug in the snare-stand? Totally this video
@tijlorion with his ears. just twistin them rods.
@BLACKSYNTH can u imagine if danny carey played for tool?!?! oh
@PositivelyBored Then I suppose I added to the comedy.
DOES SOMEONE KNOW HOWE HE TUNES HIS TOMS?
He uses a easy method.
The set he's using comes with a key that fits the lugs.
and just when i thought i was gettin good at the drums i go and watch this video...
@DeadlyNinjaDrummer
yeah well, the next time im playing guitar, I'll try to use my feet as well :P
Ah right, I was always saying "Ozric"!
I just wanna know, how do you pronounce O5ric?!
Oh five Rick
Sometimes wizards are so awesome.. it hurts!
blimey..
Nice arguments...
axis
Just your average drummer, is Mr Harrison.
i wounder what happen if someone moves the drumms
Oh five rick I believe
Sooo, Can any of you imagine gavin playing for TooL ??,,,, I did, but I just,,, died.
I wish he'd come to my house and tune my toms :'(
@ned2one Learn how to tune your toms! Honestly, I did this, and my playing instantly got a million times better. You'll obviously not be able to get the kind of round tom sound that gavin gets out of that Sonor kit, but you'll be able to get close - even on the worst shells, and some half decent heads.
OK, Gavin, got it. I'll just go and play that right now. Then I'm going to bench press 800lb and cure all known diseases.
You sound like you're from London!
5 people have never heard the drums before
@MagicAccent lol its not that hard on double bass pedals
