He's not overly flashy, but he can go nuts and be incredibly technical when the music calls for it.

After many decades watching drummers and being one myself, I can't help but think I have finally found the perfect drum master that just seems to have hit on all areas of mastery of the skins. This guy has a touch that I have never seen, as accurate and fluid and musical as it can get. Just fantastic skills and great attitude to boot. Just enjoy watching and learning from this man. Keep it up Gavin. One of the greats without doubt, if not in a great class of all his own. Again...it's that 'touch' and 'soul' in his playing. Priceless.

I just did a piece in 15/8 and it took me about 6 months to master. He is always about 1000000000000000000 steps ahead and doing it 1000000000000000000 times better.
Gavin is the definition of tastefulness and expressive musicianship.

I'm actually emotionally moved by his playing. There are many drummers I enjoy but very few who's playing has this impact. He's a true musician in every sense of the word!
Such beautifully soft playing. Nice contrast with his heavier parts in Porcupine Tree, which are also great. Distinctions like soft versus loud gain so much meaning when the musician has both in their repertoire and fully understands how to use or omit them. Masterful.

So smooth and piano (as in silent) sound and still with such a vibrant energy in his playing. Gavin is a true grandmaster of his craft.

Gavin is just the best at what he does. Keeps his kit perfectly tuned , has some killer, yet subtle fills and oh, those ghost notes. He is always a case of serving the song!!

This is fantastic stuff. There are few drummers I can think of who play such dense, odd meter stuff and make it sound so effortless and natural as Gavin does. He's such a classy musician.
It's wonderful seeing these comments....worlds like beautiful, musical, cerebral, creative. NIce words not always used for drummers. I love this drummer with all my musical heart. At 2:27 the band is playing their usual subdivisions of 7 +7 +5. He is catching all those band punches with his sidestick while playining in 4 on his hat. Beautiful heavenly music. Reminds me of "First Circle" by Pat Metheny. A song in 11 but feels so natural while the genius of it makes you want to sing along..
I love his triplet flams! He nails them so sweetly. It's my favorite rudiment that he uses. Gavin, you're god my man!

Notice those last two cymbal hits. He doesn't just bang them with the sticks, he does a "stroke" instead, using the whole stick and not just the point. Pure genius!!!

@Deraek They are »Gamelan instruments. Percussive instruments from Indonesia ( Bali, Java ). That one is from a group called the Saron and the one he is using is called Peking.

I discovered this tune a few days ago. I am so astonished. On the very good site abbdrums.com, it is said that the score is 5/8 7/8 7/8. Just the kind of thing Vinnie Colaiuta is the only other guy able to play. I mean, play music. Gavin Harrison is a magician. He played Sound of muzak with Porcupine Tree in 7/4 and no one cares about the composed odd rythm. It is smooth, fluid, it is music. Hats off to this guy who gives some kind of badge of honour to drummers. You know the joke : what is a jazz quartet ? 3 musicians and a drummer. Gavin Harrison is a musician, a perfect one.

i've never thought about putting what i learn on the xylophone onto my kit... hmmm.... if i become how a drummer that gavin is then i'll be one of the best of my time
