This is fantastic: Two drummers from two generations and totally different musical upbringings. But you can hear that they really listen to each other in this double solo. Each one give the other space to show their chops and each one really listens and reacts to the other one. This should be a pleasure even for non-drummers!

Simons father (big band leader) was kind of the boss on some time of Gavins father (trompet player)... if i remeber correctly. The roots are not that different. But the musical journeys are different. :-)

@Ben Riegel open handed is actually a great advantage! A lot of cross stick players are more limited or maybe put it that way: more complicated for them to expand over the kit. I wish I was an opened handed drummer.

i find this kind of videos more inspiring and enjoyable, than the look-how-fast-i-can-play non sense shed videos where 3-4 guys come together.. where is the taste man where is the feeling... thats why %90 of them sound no different than the other.... true masters like gavin and simon will always stand out!!!

This was so incredible, you see two unbelievable musical masterminds at work. It's intriguing to see them play of each other's playing and not choking or replicating it. Like when Simon was playing his big low boomy Tom's Gavin played in between the notes with his high tuned Tom's and hihat. Simply stunning to watch these to together.

Wonderful performance! These guys both play so well, even though they are very different. It's too bad drummers don't get together and play with each other more often. I've done it a few times and it's amazing what comes out. Also, a great opportunity to learn new things. If you liked this, there's a great video on YT of Jojo Mayer and Benny Greb, different from this but just as amazing.

GH is predominately a Rock/Prog Rock drummer with multi genre ability, but, he’s the only drummer I know of that doesn’t continually beat on China’s, he uses the 12” like a splash and the larger ones like accent cymbals striking them only once and not repeatedly.! Just inspirational for other drummers to improve their own ability and texture.!

Did you know that your area’s local time is being adjusted every 10 minutes on Gavin’s Time? In some countries the clocks are even skipping one hour every time Gavin stops playing. Some conspirators say that back in the 90’s UTC was adjusted upon atomic clocks but this led to a global mess and we immediately turned back on Gavin’s Time. Just some food for thought.

The very top of the list- of living drummers is, Gadd, Colaiuta, Chambers and Weckl. When I bring up these four, I am heavily referencing their influence in music and drumming on a world level.

Here is a clip of Simon Phillips introducing Gavin Harrison at the Modern Drummer Festival in 2008 that explains their connection and similar musical influences. ruclips.net/video/tboVyEIsaIM/видео.html
I’ve been a fan of Simon for almost 20 years, so I discovered Gavin through this video and other similar ones. Then I was flabbergasted when I saw him play with Porcupine Tree a few months ago and now I’m hooked to his playing and that band’s music! I hope to see him play live soon.
