Up Movie Description:
Carl Fredricksen, a 78-year-old balloon salesman, is about to fulfill a lifelong dream. Tying thousands of balloons to his house, he flies away to the South American wilderness. But curmudgeonly Carl's worst nightmare comes true when he discovers a little boy named Russell is a stowaway aboard the balloon-powered house. A Pixar animation.
Up is a 2009 American computer-animated film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The film was directed by Pete Docter, co-directed by Bob Peterson (in his feature directorial debut), and produced by Jonas Rivera. Docter and Peterson also wrote the film's screenplay and story, with Tom McCarthy co-writing the latter. The film stars the voices of Ed Asner, Christopher Plummer, Jordan Nagai, and Peterson. The film centers on elderly widower Carl Fredricksen and Wilderness Explorer Russell, who go on a journey to South America in order to fulfill a promise that Carl made to his late wife Ellie. Along the way, they meet a talking dog named Dug, and encounter a giant bird named Kevin, who is being hunted by the explorer Charles Muntz who is Carl's childhood idol.
Originally titled Heliums, Docter conceived the outline for Up in 2004 based on fantasies of escaping from life when it becomes too irritating. He and eleven other Pixar artists spent three days in Venezuela gathering research and inspiration. The designs of the characters were caricatured and stylized considerably, and animators were challenged with creating realistic cloth. Composer Michael Giacchino composed the film's score. It was Pixar's first film to be presented in 3D format.
Up debuted at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival on May 13, 2009, and was released in the United States on May 29. The film received critical acclaim from critics for its screenplay, animation, characters, themes, narrative, Asner's vocal performance, Giacchino's musical score, and the opening sequence. Organizations like the National Board of Review and American Film Institute named Up as one of the top 10 films of 2009. It earned $735.1 million worldwide, finishing its theatrical run as the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2009. Up was nominated for five awards at the 82nd Academy Awards, winning two, and received numerous accolades. Among these, it became the second animated film in history to receive a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Picture.

I'm glad I'm not the only grown ass man who cries at movies and TV shows. Props to you for being willing to be strong enough to not only let yourself feel that as the movie goes but to let thousands see it. Love your channel man you do a lot for a lot of people on YT in one way or another
I wept every time he did. I think UP is in the class of films that all men might cry at, including Saving Private Ryan for example, during the Wade scene.
There are two types of men in this world. Those who can cry, and those who haven't seen UP.

Fellas know it takes certain things to make us cry 😂😒. I’m tired of dudes acting like it’s soft. If it’s sad dammit I’m gonna shed thug tears 🤷🏾♂️. I cried during Logan, this, guardians of the galaxy vol 2 etc. i even cried watching Life with Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence.
When we lose someone, we all seem to forget that they wouldn't want us to just stop and be frozen in grief. Maybe Ellie sent Russell to Carl's house to get him going again--or so I'd like to think. "The ones who love us never really leave us."
It is possible that Ellie had some influence in Russell going to Carl's house. Though the timing couldve been better.
I honestly wonder why Russell was hiding on the porch to begin with. It had been several days, court proceedings take a long time, so why was Russell there?

Carl never looked through the Adventure Book because of guilt. His whole life, he had promised to take Ellie to Paradise Falls so she could fill that book with her adventure, but life got in the way and they never got to go before she passed. He couldn't look because he thought those pages were empty and that emptiness would hurt him even more, because he thought he failed her. It never occurred to him that as she grew older, her idea of what an adventure was could change and that for Ellie, their life together was her adventure.

He assumed she never filled out the pages in her book and could not bear to look past that page. It was only when the photos got knocked loose that he saw them. It was a beautiful scene.
Yeah, like so many of us, Carl didn't really get that the adventure of his life wasn't something that was waiting to begin the day they had the money and the time.
it was what he needed to see, what Ellie intended for him to see so long ago, when on her deathbed.
It is one of the greatest setup / payoff moments I've ever seen in any film. It happens at exactly the right time to recontextualize everything he's done up to that point. He couldn't take her to the falls but she cherished their life together. It wasn't wasted.

I always saw it as him not wanting to reach the End of the story, fearing it would be a Dissapointing buildup without a proper ending, but one thing is true, they were able to say so much, in scenes where no one said a word.
Pixar has this talent to make you feel every single emotion, happiness, sadness, grief, forgiveness, compassion, hope, and so many more. Pixar is truly special.
That's mostly Pete Docter. There is a great level of talent at this company but the ones that Pete Docter directs are the best at ripping out your heart

They kinda missed with Lightyear, not because of any one thing imo, they just a failed at capturing the Genre that Inspired Buzz Lightyear as a toy, the original and more fantasy-like Sci-fi shows. They couldn't capture that energy, or get the right abount of Campiness, which is what those kind of Space Stories were, because they were focused on what might be Possible out in space, not the grim and sometimes depressing reality.

I’m sure this wasn’t lost on you, but Carl watching the house fall down to parts as of yet unknown was a very significant part of the film. He tells Russell that “its just a house”, because that’s all it was. It was a possession. Ellie loved the adventure she had with him during their lives together. The house was just where they got to share it. But it wasn’t Ellie. Carl learned not to equate his loved one with a possession, and that can be a hard thing to do.
Exactly. The house symbolized his grief and attachment to her memory. He never took her to Paradise Falls, so he took the house he thought contained her spirit. In the end, though, he realized her spirit wasn't in her possessions, but in him. Chucking out the furniture and leaving the house in Paradise Falls was his way of symbolically leaving behind the grief that had been weighing him down since she passed and starting his new life without her.

The "Married Life" montage: The fact that Pixar was able to make all of us SO ATTACHED to Carl and Ellie in less than FIVE MINUTES with ZERO DIALOGUE is a testament to what masters of storytelling they are.
A friend of mine from art school is a character animator at Pixar and started working there right after UP was released. The day after it won the Best Animated Picture Oscar, Pixar execs threw a party for all of the staff in the studio's atrium complete with champagne. Everybody at the studio - including the new people like my friend - got to have their picture taken actually HOLDING the Oscar, which I thought was amazing. She sent me that picture as well as one showing the toast given by the execs and Pete Docter (UP's director) with the entire studio raising their champagne flutes.
She's told me since then that that's what happens EVERY TIME one of their films wins Best Animated Picture.

I can just imagine the quote that accompanied her showing you that photo. "First day on the job. Already won myself an Oscar." Perhaps wrapped up with a "Suck it" if she truly wanted to be jokingly arrogant about it.

@@UltimateGamerCC exactly 😢 I showed it to my friend (at the time) who literally is a sociopath, he admited it. heartless. he had zero emotion relating to it and was annoyed that I was crying 😧😭

@@StinkGoodInc. it's a story and you're supposed to feel things when it's a good story, so yeah i've got my eyes on anyone who isnt feeling anything. as the gen Zs put it, toxic masculinity isnt cool anymore, it's alright to show emotions and feel things.
I think this movie is incredible because Ellie, a character who only speaks a few lines, and is basically only present in the first few minutes of the film, is so PRESENT throughout. Like, everything Carl does has a little bit of Ellie in it. It's such an amazing display of genuine human connection and emotion.
I also love that we get to know Ellie through Russell. Russell is an outgoing and adventurous kid, just like Ellie was as a kid, so we feel her presence through Russell
24:42 "I thought he would have been looking through that book." Grief is rough man. There are songs I avoid because they remind me of people that've passed. It's like I hear the song and no matter what my day was like before the rest of it is colored over by the emotions that song brings on because the memories it holds.
It's a way to stay sane and not get down. I don't think it's particularly healthy but it's a band aid for the moment until you heal enough to take it off. And in a way Ellie's part in the book was the last bit of communication they'd ever have. To read that last passage from her is, in a way, letting go. And he wasn't ready for that.
This film is one of the best pixar movies ever and RIP to the actor who played Carl

Im right there with Mell crying my little heart out. It is not a movie I watch often but definitely a movie that makes me cry every time I do watch it. Im glad that Mell is comfortable with showing his emotions on camera because it makes us feel comfortable too and its just a nice thing to see.
He's a real one for sure!
The opening sequence with Ellie just about breaks you. It is so sad, yet happy, too. It also points out that the grumpy old "get off my lawn" guy in the neighborhood may have been happy once upon a time.
I think one of the saddest parts about this movie, is that in the opening scenes with Elle she was shown to work in the Bird House at the Zoo while she was married to Carl. Carl was so focused on completing their childhood adventure, that he didn't realise the things that gave her joy during her marriage.
Russel is truly Carl & Elle's spirit child.
I think this movie has the most grown-up message of any Pixar / Disney movie. That you may not get to do everything you planned together (be it a friend, partner, family or even a pet) but you can still cherish the times you had together, and that its ok to move on and keep going with your own life even after someone close to you has passed away.
This movie is the literal definition of "life is what happens when you're making other plans." I bet that was the basic pitch for the writers to work around, and boy they delivered!
24:32 when his wife was in the hospital, she gave him the book, but she died and he never read her last entry till now. Them being together was her greatest adventure. That was the closure he needed😢 Film is a Masterpiece.
I was crying during this movie, too. Honestly, I think this is Pixar's magnum opus. It had a compelling story about the process of grief and moving forward after losing a loved one, and discovering how we can continue to live and there is still so much to live for despite that loss ❤️
I also cry everytime when he discovered she actually filled out here adventure book. Truly the most beautiful reminder to us that there is no greater adventure than life itself. You don’t need to fulfill goals or be successful, you just need to be happy, have peace, and have someone to share it with. I can’t think of a more beautiful adventure than growing old with the one that you fell in love with.
When this first came out, all I remember hearing was how emotionally GUTTED the audience was. Especially that intro. 😭This is actually my SILs second favorite movie (after Wall-E) and she even bought her own Adventure Book online. And it's definitely one of my top favorite animated movies. It's just so wholesome and heartfelt. ❤

nah, I don't think anyone would disagree with you connecting with Carl at all. in a way, the bulk of this movie was Carl's journey through his grief and each of his emotions and decisions were simply an outward expression of him reaching and going through one of the stages of grief. while this movie doesn't make me ugly cry anymore, it still makes me tear up at two specific scenes: (1) when Carl discovers Ellie's note in the Adventure Book and (2) when Carl gives Russell the Ellie badge. two very small moments just full of emotion and meaning. thanks for sharing your reaction with us Mello! ❤
As the movie was ending (when I first saw it at the movies), I thought "okay, it's almost over, no more crying bits, I can relax". Then Carl pinned the Ellie badge on Russell and, BAM, water works. 😭

It was amazing to me that I missed the part with Russell talking about getting ice cream with his dad, connecting to the end scene after the Ellie badge, when Carl took him to do the same thing, until I saw the scenes much closer together in a cinema therapy video.
Granted I'd only watched through the movie once, and only caught snippets otherwise.

Man THANK YOU FOR THIS! I just lost 2 grandparents in 2 weeks and my mom was diagnosed with cancer earlier this month and I’ve been struggling to feel anything. You helped me release so many backed up tears… I watched this movie with my grandma and grandpa in the movie theatre, and will never forget the emotions I felt on my first watch. Aside from it being such an excellent movie, it means so much to me. Thanks for keeping your reactions real and raw man. It’s crazy how Pixar can break down ANYONE and teach you a valuable lesson at the same time. Happy holidays to you and yours. This video was a ride.
I think a lot of people overlook that Carl wasn't always or naturally a grump (unlike his entire family). He and Ellie had a happy and complete life together, his only regret is that he was never able to actually get her to Paradise Falls as they always wanted. But in his grief he lost sight of the fact that at some point they didn't have any obstacles getting in the way, they had both simply forgot about it because they enjoyed the life they built together so much. Him buying the tickets was a good gesture, but Ellie didn't need it any more than he did, it was just really bad timing that made him feel guilty about that one last trip.
He lost sight of himself while he was in mourning, but found it again with a kid just as lonely as him but with the same spirit of adventure he and Ellie had back in the old days.
The beginning scene was heartbreaking especially Ellie not being able to have children and seeing their devastation.I have watched this movie so many times and cry every time!
This movie his HARD when it first came out b/c I was trying to have a baby at the time and having a lot of problems with it. So yeah... the beginning part with that theme just... it gut punched me.

I lost my grandma in Jan 21 and this movies hits so much harder than it used to. I sobbed w you 😭 Losing someone who brought so much love and magic into this world is one of the worst heartbreaks.
something many of us have to experience sadly, living without our loved ones, when i first experienced it, it almost destroyed me.
I’ve never *not* sobbed throughout this movie, and watching your reaction was no different. Just sitting here in my chair, a 38 year old man who’s beside himself and overwhelmed by emotion at a movie I’ve seen forty times.
I'm here for "Emotional Mello". Pixar always gives us a tearjerker! I definitely cried on this one. Everyone should hope for A forever love!

I think what gets me most in this scene is the fact that Carl thought Ellie wouldn't have filled out her scrap book thinking that their planned trip to Paradise falls never happened. But the truth was the marriage 💑 to Carl and the life they shared together was in itself, the adventure to Ellie, hence the note in the end saying : " Thanks for the adventure."
This is THE BEST reaction to this heartwarming movie I have ever seen! I cried 3 times. When Ellie passed away, when he saw the rest of the pictures in her adventure book of their life together and when he gave Russell the Ellie badge. In my opinion, this is the best movie Pixar ever made.
Nominated for 5 Oscars including Best Picture but won for Best Original Score and Animated Feature.

The scene where she couldn't have children hit different too when I had a miscarriage. Thankfully I've had 3 kids since, but just the sense of loss she must've felt resonated with me.
I tried to watch this ages ago and was struggling with infertility/miscarriage so I didn’t make it past the first 10 minutes. It was too hard. My daughter is 6 now and I finally just watched it through this reaction. The first part is still hard to watch but I made it through this time.

I didn't see it in a theater, I watched it at home and was not prepared to cry at the start - I was shocked because I didn't expect ANY story to get to me so deeply in the first 10 minutes. I was even a little bit angry when it transitioned to Carl having a quiet, cranky old man life without Ellie because it was funny, but I wasn't ready, I needed time to recover from the intro XD
I can imagine watching it in theater you probably heard a bunch of quiet sobs throughout the place.
UP is such a triumph and a masterpiece. Their main protagonist was an old man and they had the balls to roll with it to create a story full of heart, wonder and beautifully realised adventure.
Yes it's a masterpiece, this film that I saw only once at least 10 years ago marked me so much that a tear comes to me just by hearing the music.
The opening of this movie is still the greatest flex Pixar has ever made.

I laughed so much at this reaction, but you have to understand, if I wasn't laughing with a knowing cockiness like "haha, I knew he'd cry here," I'd be crying myself. This movie hits like a nuclear powered Mike Tyson.

The opening scene gets a lot of credit for being so heartbreaking, but I have YET to make it through the adventure book reveal without bawling.
Because basically nothing I planned out as a kid came to pass. But my life has been so full of unexpected “adventures” and the most important moments have been with people I love. So that moment of him learning that he didn’t fail Ellie by never getting to Paradise Falls - that she had a happy life with him - that just snaps my heart in half.

For an animated movie to make people feel such strong emotion without any dialogue is an amazing feat. Kudos to Pixar for their brilliant storytelling.
Pixar REALLY excels in creating stories with characters who connect with and touch everyone’s hearts. I’m thankful we have their work to teach us such valuable lessons.
Watching your reaction to this was really beautiful. The gift of this movie is the emotional journey we all take while watching it, the meaning we make of it in our own lives, and sharing it with others. The thing that gets me about this story is that it is so like life. The joy mixed in with the grief, sorrow, fear, and longing. The laughter, even when just a moment before we were crying. Catharsis from something that might seem small or even trivial to others. Thank you for reacting to this film - it's hard to be vulnerable like this on camera in front of a bunch of people.

You have to be impressed at how quickly this movie makes you care about 2 characters enough to cry when one dies.
This movie wrecks me every time. I love how the whole trip was meant to fulfill his promise to Ellie. But the book gives him the true closure he needed, by showing him how he had already given her an adventure.
Then that final shot of Ellie by the falls always does me in…

I have seen many reactions to Pixar movies both old and new. I have seen many reactors cry to these movies including the beginning of Up. I have not seen a reactor cry throughout this movie with as many tears as you. Hats off to seeing tears stream down your face to the themes and elements that are presented throughout. From the house being personified as Ellie to Russel being the child they never had points out how things are given and taken away. Life is meant for living, and that is exactly what Ellie did.
This movie can still make me cry, even though I've seen it many times (not including reaction videos). The way they managed to tell almost an entire lifetime together in the first ten minutes and still have the same emotional weight as a full-length movie is amazing, and watching Carl work through his grief is also both sad and heartwarming.
Up is among Pixar’s best, one of the original unstoppable that made Pixar the king of animation in its early days. That emotional intro has inspired many other genres, including the thriller mystery Searching starring John Cho.

Man, every single person in the movie theatre was bawling when he looked through Ellie's married life photos towards the end. Cherish the one's you love....now and forever.
Yeah man, that opening is something else. Greatest montage in the history of movies, in my opinion. Within 5 minutes, they make you care about the characters, feel like you've been on a journey with them, and experience their joys and pain. And all without a single word. Really incredible storytelling.
This has to be not only one of the greatest animated movies of all time, but, I would argue, one of the best movies ever made. This and Inside Out and Pete Docter's finest works, and I was completely obsessed with the airship as a kid. It's also a borderline perfect role for Ed Asner, who tragically died last year. He was always, in my head, whenever I had a story going, the voice I defaulted to for the crotchety old man characters.
10/10 movie, would fly my house to paradise falls again.

Let the tears flow man. Almost everyone that saw the film admittedly broke down in tears at the same scenes. It's all good. God gave you tears and emotions for a reason. Sadly the REAL house here in Seattle based on this film was finally demolished a few years back. I lived a couple of blocks away. Now there is a memorial plague where the house was.
Ummm… that aspect of the movie was based on the real life house. The house wasn’t based on the movie! Also, a memorial _plague_ sounds like a really bad idea.

Like some others have said. Your reaction to this was very emotional and real. Somebody was cutting onions over here too. When I watched it for the first time, certain emotional scenes caught me off guard too. It is a great move.

This movie became very personal to me since my wife passed away last year. At least I was very blessed to have been able to spend many years with someone who was my perfect soulmate.
The first 10-12 minutes of this movie are in the elite tier of Pixar segments. It's just incredible.

People always go on about how tearjerking the opening of this is, you're the first person (other than myself) I've seen bawl throughout the whole thing. I've only been able to watch it once (just your review had me like frikkin Niagara Falls), but it's a beautiful masterpiece.
You know, I've watched this movie a couple times and seen some reactions but the beginning of the movie never hit for me as hard as the creators intended. My grandmother passed around 8 months ago and ever since then my grandpa was just done with life. as much as it pains me, I cant help but feel solace in the fact that my grandpa who just passed away last week is with her again. all he wanted since he passed was to be with her and now hes got that. that being said, the intro to this movie now has made me feel his pain on *ANOTHER LEVEL!*
Notice how the dogs flying division is “Gray leader”, etc., since Dogs Are Color Blind!
This movie is such an amazingly powerful story about holding on to our most cherished memories while also knowing how to move on and have new adventures when we lose the things we love most. Really emotional and I was right there with you during this reaction!
To me the hope that Ellie had was to have and start a new family with a new world of possibilities one couldn’t imagine. When she couldn’t have a baby she understood that the everyday moments is the world she could explore understand and thrive in.
When he focuses on the house he can’t let Ellie go it isn’t until the third act he understands that holding onto the impossible dream doesn’t help you live and enjoy the moment. He was literally in a fantasy world and could only focus on his house being pristine and not enjoy the wonders of it being used.
He realizes that in this moment without Ellie there is a child in this home and a dog and a bird and while he can’t go exploring with Ellie like he dreamed and he can’t sit inside the house everday he can find a family and enjoy being in the moment.
It’s a lesson you’re never to old or young for, that life’s gonna be hard and sad sometimes but that by finding new ways to enjoy the moment you can keep exploring and learning new things about the world or new things about yourself.
He learns about tigers, about birds, about kids, dogs, flying, different badges how to get them a whole different family and that wild unknowns can be mysterious dangerous or beautiful and playful and fun it depends how frightened and little you know and how open you are to learning and interacting
I’ve always gotten watery eyes watching this, never remember crying but the empathy this move makes you feel is second to none. People now underestimate how important a real bond in a relationship is, that a person can really be your soulmate. Yes you both make children and you could love them more cause you made them but children grow up and start their own lives. When your kids grow then who do you spend the rest of your life with ? Were in an era where cheating, divorce, “independence", and all that stuff has been normalized that it’s hard to find someone who is truly valuable and worth it. Ellie is a legend man.

Im telling you when this movie came out in 2009 I was 14 and didn't really give it my full attention when watching it and always just thought it was.. fine? Never really understood the hype. Now a few months back I put it on while on a Disney/Pixar binge and the way I cried like a little child with in breath sobs and everything. Bust out laughing at myself at the end when I started crying for like the 5th time just being like GODDAMN enough already. I think this music has some tear inducing stuff in it. Sweetest movie ever!
Giving you a virtual hug, Mello. It's a rollercoaster of emotions, sweet, sad, and fun in turns. Definitely a helluva picture of grief, old and new relationships.
It took me a few viewings to realize Carl kept stopping himself from going further in the Adventure book, so sure there would be nothing but blank pages and he'd feel he failed her in their life together. But once he dared to look after some photos got knocked loose, it's like he could finally grieve, because their life together WAS an adventure. And watching this with you, I finally remembered that walking scene where Russel was talking about the way things used to be with his dad and how he actually remembers the boring stuff the most. And Ellie's photos were full of those little moments in their life together. Between those two scenes, Carl finally got it.
The first 10 minutes never fails to bring me to tears every, _single_ , time. 😭😢
Mel, I love ya meng. I took my nephew to see this at the theater when it came out. I was tearing up just like you and my freaking nephew half way through the movie looks at me and yells “ are you crying?! Why are you crying?” shut it kid 😂😂😂 big hugs to you my dude

UP really destroyed all of us. This one defo hit a lot of us who grew up in the 80s/90s with Disney movies since a lot of us were adults when UP released. It really hit us all with a more adult message. It’s a beautiful movie ❤

The start of this movie hit me back when it came out and I was in my teens then. Now I'm living with my fiance, it's our 5 year anniversary this year, I don't think I could ever stand living without her. This movie hits on a whole other level when you do find that one person you know you're going to love forever.
