Soul Movie Description:
Joe is a middle-school band teacher whose life hasn't quite gone the way he expected. His true passion is jazz -- and he's good. But when he travels to another realm to help someone find their passion, he soon discovers what it means to have soul.
Soul is a 2020 American animated fantasy comedy drama film produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures. The film was directed by Pete Docter and co-directed by Kemp Powers, both of whom co-wrote it with Mike Jones, and produced by Dana Murray. It stars the voices of Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Graham Norton, Rachel House, Alice Braga, Richard Ayoade, Phylicia Rashad, Donnell Rawlings, Questlove, and Angela Bassett. The story follows Joe Gardner (Foxx), a middle school teacher and aspiring pianist who falls into a coma following an accident and seeks to reunite his separated soul and body in time for his big break as a jazz musician.
Docter conceived Soul in January 2016, examining the origins of human personalities and the concept of determinism. He pitched the idea about spacetime involving souls with personalities, during his first meeting with Jones. The film's producers consulted various jazz musicians, including Herbie Hancock and Terri Lyne Carrington, and animated its musical sequences using the sessions of musician Jon Batiste as a reference. Apart from Batiste's original jazz compositions, musicians Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross composed the film's score. Production on Soul lasted for four years on an approximate $150 million budget. This was the first Pixar film to feature a black lead.
Soul premiered at the London Film Festival on October 11, 2020, and was scheduled to be theatrically released on June 19 and November 20. However, the feature was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Soul was released direct-to-streaming on Disney+ on December 25, 2020 (alongside the SparkShort known as Burrow), and in theaters in countries without the streaming service. It was released in theaters in the United States on January 12, 2024. Soul received acclaim for its craftsmanship, story, characters, themes, ideas, sound design, creativity, emotional weight and musical score. The National Board of Review and the American Film Institute named Soul one of the top-ten films of 2020. Soul was nominated for three Academy Awards at the 93rd Academy Awards, winning two, and received numerous other accolades.

This movie is absolutely beautiful. I love the creative ways it explains the afterlife, the "beforelife", and being in the zone. And more than that, I love the message of it all. Life isn't about what you were "born to do" or finding your purpose, because nobody really has one. Life is about living it to the fullest, really enjoying it, doing what makes you happy. And it's a beautiful message indeed.

That’s the scene that always gets me. So many times I’ve felt that I wasn’t doing enough. Always being upset with myself that I haven’t found this larger than life purpose. Can you imagine the weight that lifted off of my shoulders when I realized walking could be my spark too. ❤️

I like to believe that the reason the title card doesn't come until the end is because that's when Joe's story really starts. He's been just existing until now. But now, after experiencing things with 22, he's finally ready to start LIVING.
The young fish is looking for "the ocean" because the idea of the ocean sounds so grand. But when you're actually in the ocean.... it's just water.
Joe thinks he's not living his dream but what he claims to be in love with is playing music. As a music teacher, he does play music - every, single day. Yet he's unfulfilled because "middle school music teacher" doesn't sound grand. But it is literally his dream - he is a professioinal, full-time musician. He just doesn't appreciate it.
The part of this movie that makes me bawl every time is when he's pulling the items out of his pocket and realizing/remembering that it's the small experiences and moments that make life worthwhile. gosh. what a beautiful sentiment.

One great detail is that Joe got his jazz gig in part because a student he taught called him to tell him about the opportunity.
Joe already has done something with his passion for music: he's helped the same passion grow in others.
I’ve been a musician for most of my life, started playing piano when I was 5 and my favorite toys before that were a little xylophone and a fisher price record player, and the way this movie depicts “the zone” is absolutely true. When you’re in there doing something you love, everything else fades away and all you can see, hear, feel is that music, that art, whatever it is that you’re creating. It’s a transcendent experience, and Soul captures it better than anything else I’ve ever seen.

"Transcendent" is a good word for it. That's probably about as close as anyone can get to describing it.
I love that they make it explicitly clear that a soul’s spark is *not* its purpose. Just because something gives you a love for the world doesn’t mean it’s the only thing you’re “meant” to do

I love this movie so much after I saw it, I watched all the behind the scenes clips and it was fantastic to watch how the people who worked on this film were passionate about portraying what it’s like to be at the barber shop- it’s not just about “getting a haircut” but about spending time with brothers in the community and having great discussions (as well as roasting each other every once in a while). The scenes at the jazz club- it’s not just about listening to the music- it’s about experiencing emotions through the musicians’ passion, sweat and love! Walking down the streets in New York- it’s not just about getting somewhere- it’s about getting to experience life through all 5 senses….this movie is absolutely SPECTACULAR 🥹😭

I honestly love how this movie romanticizes the little things in life. And how 22 learns to love life through a collection of small things like the feeling of the sun on your skin or watching leaves fall or having a good conversation. This movie reminded me to appreciate small things, and those small things really add up (especially when you’re in a really negative headspace).
It’s good to have big dreams, but just living life to the fullest and not allowing moments to pass you by is just as important. I still don’t really know what my dream is or if I have one yet, but this movie makes me happy just to be alive.
P.S. I adored your use of the Kingdom Hearts music during the Better Help ad, hands down my favorite game series of all time.

@kianalikesbooks at the time I was fighting way too hard in a career I thought was my purpose because it was something I thought was my spark. But I kept reaching dead ends, and when I heard, "your spark is not your purpose", it hit me that I needed to make big changes. And I've been so much happier ever since. I cried because I never considered it, and a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders. 🥹

38:35 i just love this scene where he remembers eating a pie and earlier in the movie he saw the same moment but thought it was a sad moment because he was eating alone but in this moment he sees it wasn't a sad moment, it was him enjoying a good food and realising that even the small moments can be something beautiful, even just eating a good pie bye yourself can be a moment of happiness

You asked what i love about this movie (besides everything). My favorite thing they did with the theme is when he had his big breakthrough gig, and afterwards, his life was still his life, the subway was still the subway, his apartment was still his apartment.
There are things in life you are supposed to do, but in the moments between, your life keeps going, and that's a part of who you are too. And i love that they used his triumph to emphasize the importance of... everything except his triumph.

Oh man, i was torn between laughing at you crying and joining in on the crying. Because yes another person’s heart being wrenched by Pixar particularly with that piano scene near the end. The music is just breathtaking and you start getting tears for no reason. And the ending they way they did that its supposed to be happy but my heart felt like it was growing another size but also being stabbed in the feels.
This movie is a classic that will have to be shared with future generations.

Oh that piano scene absolutely got me too. It's my favorite scene in the movie. Just a nice slice of pie alone in a cafe, listening to rustling leaves in the wind, hanging out with people I love, chatting, having a slice of pizza...*that's* where I'm happy. If I get my big dreams to happen too, then that's awesome. But life is already happening around us, every day.
Dude, I thought the same thing and cried too when you were talking about Joe getting the taste of a better lived life and then basically passing as he played piano that night. This movie is like in the same level as Ratatouille, with its mature message. I definitely loved the animation, the camera direction, the lighting. It really was so well done.
yeah this is probably one of the best animated movies of all time, once again showing that just because something is animated doesn't mean it's for kids. and even as someone who's not all into jazz i love the music. especially how in the living world it's all jazz and physical instruments but in the great before it's predominantly sythn.
This movie is so different for Pixar & Disney. When I saw it for the first time, I liked it & appreciated the artistry, but I don’t think I let the message in. I still don’t think I’ve found my spark at 34. But every time I rewatch it, the more I grow to love & respect it.

It's pretty much how the creative genius at Pixar Animation Studios construct a story for both their full length features and the film shorts.Disney...Disney bought out Pixar and their sole involvement is their name in the opening credits.
Ive been teaching for the past 7 years and when this first came out I feel it so hard as teaching high school is my passion. Seeing this movie is now sad for me since I can't afford to stay as a teacher and this is my last year before I have to look for a higher paying job to support my family :(

This movie hits me really hard for personal reasons involving my last relationship since my partner was extremely dissatisfied with where his life was and in the process of trying to fix it he stopped being able to enjoy what was in front of him, and even now it’s hard not to grieve what could have been if he’d been able to slow down and enjoy the process more, if he’d felt like he could have taken the time to go out and have fun, spend time with the people he cared about, instead of being hostile to the suggestion of not putting all his energy on only making progress. This movie (and other movies with a focus on this topic) really hits home for me because I’m trying so hard to enjoy the little things in life that make life worth living, because what’s most important are the connections that we have.

Right?! I bought this movie because of how fantastic it is but I still might go watch it in the big screen because of how powerful and fantastic the entire film, score, soundtrack and animation is!
My two favorite parts; first is the him eating pie, you see both sides of it. Initially, he looks sad and alone. But then you see him enjoying the tasty pie and it’s a beautiful moment. It didn’t matter that he was alone. He was experiencing life.
The second part I love is when it goes from him sitting at his piano all the way out to the cosmos. It’s important for us to keep perspective and understand our place here amongst the stars. Life is bigger than any of us could even fathom, but we’re here to experience it and appreciate it. We are the universe experiencing the fullness of it.
This film is both hilarious and heartwarming it basically tells us that you only get one chance of life and you should live it
A spark, in this movie, is the will to live. 22 didn't want to live before. She had no reason to want to do so. A life's purpose isn't necessarily a reason to live. For some people, their purpose is not why they get up in the morning. The will to live, (albeit sometimes fueld by your life's purpose) is the real reason you get up and go through every day.
The Great Before's job is to allow the unborn souls to explore Earth's hobbies and topics to encourage anticipation and excitement for going to earth. Not their life's purpose. Their will to live
this movie should've gone to theaters originally, but man my dad thought this was a 100% Jazz movie and he got really sad it was talking about the afterlife, and I told him prior it's not about jazz its about the soul, anyway he enjoyed the movie but kinda wished it was a little bit more about Soul Jazz

this movie made me sob when I watched it, it was beautifully made and one of the more underrated ones in my opinion!
I understand both sides of that conversation between Joey and his mom, matches my internal thoughts a lot. "You can't eat dreams for breakfast Joey" "Then I don't want to eat." Life sometimes feels like a choice between being practical, doing what I need to survive, to put money in my pocket & the safest ways to get security, or the thought that I don't want to just exist to survive, the passion for at least _pursuing_ my passion being something I need, or else what's the point if I live even an impossibly long life?
I don't think the movie is trying to provide an answer as to which one you should choose or even if you should choose, but reminding you that life happens wherever you are. The fish thinks he's missing the ocean without knowing he's getting all of the ocean.

Brutal honesty time...I just spent the last 342 days in a shelter. I ended up there due the combination of the sad realization that I'd been pretending my whole life that i was ok and recently losing my twin sister both led me to suicidal thoughts that i was far too close to acting on. I brought that up to say literally just yesterday I got the keys to my apartment placed in my hand and it's such a big thing but it reminded me of the small things i overlooked in my own self pity. If we ignore the beauty around us long enough all we will see is the mess. There's nothing wrong with celebrating the little things on your way to the bigger ones.

I don't know of it's still in theaters but they rereleased this movie in theaters in January. They also plan for Luka and Turning Red to be in theaters this year (I think this season even).

I watched this movie with my 2 daughters and they were concentrated the whole time. We absolutely loved this movie. It opened a conversation about life and death that I didn’t anticipated but in a beautiful way.

This has got to be my favorite Pixar film of all time. I absolutely love the entire message of it, and it makes me cry to this day.
The reason why I love this film so much is because it talks about some of the most persistent questions about my life and what it's supposed to mean. And I'm a musician like Joe. I dream of doing what Joe was able to do when he finally played with the band in the end. Soul gives me an idea of how to approach things better. How to value the moments even when they seem insignificant. I could write an entire book about this and why I love it but for the sake of being concise I'll keep it shorter. And like you, it makes me cry so much. I love when a film is able to make laugh, cry, be awestruck and all of the above. Soul does that and goes above and beyond for me, leaving me with more in my heart than when I first sat down to watch it.

I loved this take on the after life, I know there is more there than what we know and that gives me comfort.
Even though this is a family movie technically, I feel like this is a movie more for adults with its themes.
Also yes this won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score. It was also nominated for Best Sound.
So happy you watched this! By far one of my favourites with a strong message that I think most people need to hear, it definitely touched close to home with me. My favourite scene is when he revisits memories that he considered ‘uneventful’ or ‘boring’ and later realises those moments held meaning too and are beautiful in their own way, a reminder to create more smaller memories than chasing after big ones.
Also visually stunning!
Yay.! Aw man this is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE it made me cry and I am NOT the type to cry about ANYTHING.! But THIS movie is the most beautifully orchestrated story telling I have ever experienced. An absolute treasure.! I am so glad you get to enjoy this movie for the first time and we get to experience it with you.
