I was not ready!!!!! Absolutely gut wrenching intro that got me the sniffles for the entire film sorry! Incredible movie though and I loved the themes of obsession and loss throughout. Enjoy :)

Fun fact: The first 10 minutes of this movie even in storyboard format brought the crew to tears.
I dont dout that for a second, so was I!
That Pixar quality of human connection with emotions
Interesting fact: It would cost roughly $3,500,000.00 US to fill the number of 11"-12" balloons that would be necessary to lift a house similar to the one depicted in the movie.
Your fact was arguably better, but I didn't want to leave ya' with nothing. haha
@@JustSomeApparition that is an incredible number!! Never feel bad for telling facts about a movie! It's fascinating! I thank you for that info that incredible!!
I have never cried at this movie, I don't understand why people cry ar movies 😂
"No one warned me!" TRY BEING IN A MOVIE THEATER AFTER MONTHS OF EXCITEMENT WORKING UP TO THIS MOVIE AND SEEING *THE FIRST 10 MINUTES* AND SOBBING IN YOUR CHAIR, BEFORE YOU HEAR "Mommy? Where did she go?! Why isn't she with him anymore?!"
A child learned about death that day and all of us sobbed HARDER when we realized.
OMG NO! That poor child! Also poor mom, having to explain to her kid why Ellie won't be in the rest of the movie TT^TT
I feel like a lot of people had the same story about seeing Bambi when it was new
@michaelschwartz8730 Yes, it was very sad when the guy stopped *drawing the deer*
You should watch watership down.
@Senkoau Oh that's CRUEL!
I know so many people only really talk and rave about the first 10 minutes of this movie. Rightfully so cause it’s peak animation and peak Pixar. But one scene that is SEVERELY overlooked is Carls scrapbook epiphany scene later in the movie.
He is so disappointed and feels that he failed Ellie. Having gone their whole lives and never being able to accomplish that goal. And just when he was about to put the book away, he notices a picture is the section he expected to be blank. She filled it out. As Carl flips through each page, he realizes he didn’t fail her. And that she was satisfied with spending her life with Carl, even if it wasn’t a grand exotic adventure. This movie has such a great message of showing that life is not always about the goals. Things will happen and it’s really the about journey. And it’s such a nice detail that if you notice earlier in the film, Ellie ushered Carl to read the book on her hospital bed. But once she died, he was so devastated emotionally that he closed himself off to everyone and the whole world. Carls development from the moment Ellie died to the end of the movie was so well done.
Agreed. That scene gets me more than the opening. Her “Thanks for the adventure. Now go have a new one.” 🥹
That's my favorite scene! It's easily the best, what a payoff and elegant demonstration of the themes. Overall honestly, although I love the opening as much as anybody, people saying that's the only good bit make me ease up on my praise, personally. It's a movie about continuing to live past tragedy, and that's a beautiful thing. The journey isn't just "filler" between the opening and that scrapbook moment. To believe so is missing the movie's point.
Thank you! The first 10 minutes made me tear up, the scrapbook scene near the end made me bawl
Ty yes.
It wouldn't be what it is without the start though,
Which is why both moments are phenomenal
More like she found that he was her greatest adventure
Ah yes! The infamous Pixar movie that breaks us all by the first 15 minutes.
Consistently, every damn time I watch it 😂 or just hearing those iconic first 🎶
And then I’m fine until the Ellie badge, then lose it all over again
Yeah, UP is the emotional equivalent of a landmine decorated with rainbow glitter.
what an appt description lmao
That.... is the best description I have ever heard for this movie. Bravo. lol
It always plays out the same way. See the image of the house and say, "Oh, how colorful! This looks like a fun whimsical movie." Wrecked to the point of sobbing every time; Ellie, Carl's court judgement, Russel's dad, bad dog, the Adventure Book...
"i'm excited to see what this one will do to my emotional state" oh bud...
Me too
Famous last words.
No one is immune to the first 20 minutes of UP.
first 20? Try the first 10. The whole life of the two is 10 minutes.
No tears... ?
You are walking down the beach and see a turtle on its back...
@@dahobdahob What’s a tortoise ?
When he finally reads passed the page that says "things I'm gonna do" it absolutely destroys me. He was so caught up in their childhood dream he forgot that he had already given her the most incredible adventure already. She wanted him to be able to live beyond her and I think in the end he got the message.
Yes, yes, yes for Stranger Things! One of my favorite to watch people react to. By the time you finish, perhaps the final season will be close to ready!
💯♥️
I know people love to talk about how sad the beginning scene is (for good reason) but people don’t talk about the ending scene enough. The reveal of the house after it landed picture perfect on the exact cliff in paradise falls always gets me too 😭😭
It's more implied that Ellie just can't have any kids, not that she miscarried _one._
The "very large mouse" Russell was chasing was most likely a Virginia opossum, North America's only marsupial. They have a hairless, prehensile tail.
Technically, Carl wasn't lying about a snipe being a bird with a long beak and little beady eyes. The snipe is a small fishing bird that lives all over North America.
Dogs aren't colorblind. They see in a blue-yellow spectrum of color.
Thats true and since funny enough dogs see blue. The doggo should see all the blue cars
Yes and no... its open to the interpretation. Specially because they were decorating a bedroom for a baby. Normally people dont do that, if they were not expecting. Ellie may had a miscarriage and for some reason it may had complications to a point that she couldnt get pregnant again.
@@cassandramcbride7007 Also quite possible that she's able to get pregnant but not able to carry a baby to term. That's a fairly common form of not being able to have children - attempting is basically just a long string of miscarriages, and they only showed us the first one because watching a woman go through a dozen miscarriages of wanted children is more heart-breaking than even this movie was willing to depict.
Please tell me you’re a science teacher. :)
i did check wikipedia and it says she had a miscarriage, but at first i thought she just couldnt have children
Charles Muntz is based off of a real man, Charles Mintz. He was a friend of Walt Disney and actually stole his first invention, Oswald the rabbit.
Also Doug was able to „capture“ Kevin because he was the only hunting dog of the pack (a retriever), while all other ones were guard dogs
I really love such attention to detail
Disney owns Oswald again and not sure if stole is the right word. Disney worked for universal when he made Oswald for them so Oswald always belonged to him. However, I like that for. Disney movie they made him the villain.
8:39 There's a theory that Russel is not repeating the sentence the second time because he'd forget or because he's dumb, but because he's been taught that elder people can have dementia so he assumed Carl might've had something like that.
Yes. Absolutely do EVERY SINGLE EPISODE of Stranger Things 😊😊😊
Yes!!!!!
seconded!
Yes! Oscar’s going to LOVE Stranger Things.😃😁
Please sir!
Up has arguably the greatest montage sequence of all time. Period. It’s so splendidly done and so perfectly scripted that I can’t think of any that compares.
25:47 In the beginning of the movie, Carl was 9 and Charles was 23. So, they are 78 and 92 years old respectively.
Russel is really like the child Carl and Ellie never had. It takes Carl way too long to wake up and realize that the kid is trying to get him to do what Ellie would have wanted, and that the adventure can still be had, with these new people, and he can still keep her alive--- not with the house, but by having these experiences, and still engaging with the world. His life isn't over, and she wouldn't want him to stop living it so quickly. She can't be there to live it with him, so he has to live it for her.
I love the little detail of when Carl tells Russell that he can't keep Kevin, and looks up at the house and asks Ellie what he should do. Russell has the idea to ask Ellie if it's ok to keep Kevin and claims she said yes (which she would do, she always had birds in the zoo), Carl immediately turns to the house and says "but I told him no!" It’s such a classic moment of a kid and their parents.
I always found that this movie was about found family, and the connections we make in the places we least expect to. Carl thinks there's no one else left who can put a spark into his life, until he meets Russel, Doug, and Kevin.
Also, RIP Ed Asner, the voice of Carl, and Santa Claus in "ELF."
kora wishes it was as good as up
My bf’s brother got married last year and they exchanged the soda pop buttons during the ceremony with the rings. It was adorable.
Muntz's death is hits quite hard if you think on the context of both him and Carl. At the beginning both were bitter old men who lived obsessed with something. With Carl was the attatchment to his memories with Ellie, for Muntz, was trying to capture Kevin at all cost. While Carl grew and eventually moved on, leaving his obsession behind, Muntz doubled down and that brought him to his own demise. Carl could have ended up like Muntz if it wasn't for the fact that Russel made him open up and move on with his life.
It only dawned on me with this rewatch that "Charles" and "Carl" are the same name. "The Road Not Taken"
"... to see what this one does to my emotional state."
UP: * cracks knuckles *
The script of this movie is just brilliant. One of my favorite scenes is when Russell tells Carl about getting ice cream with his dad. His remarks that the “boring” stuff are the things he remembers most foreshadows Carl’s character growth during the scrapbook scene. You don’t need to go on an extraordinary adventure or make an amazing discovery to live a fulfilling life. The mundane and ordinary things are what actually make life so meaningful. Ellie and Russell both knew that, Carl learned that, and Muntz never did.
Love your videos, Oscar! If you haven’t seen it, you should do a reaction on Finding Nemo! It’s one of my favorites!
I enjoy the part where he gives up his cane and fully embraces the fact that he’s not the frail old man he thought he was
My Mom lost her husband, my Dad about 50 years ago now to a drunk driver. She was over one day when this had come out on blue ray and I said you need to watch this movie, you will love it. After that opening montage she said "Gee Thanks. Now I feel good." Eye roll intended. She ended up loving the movie. Heart wrenching and feel good at the same time. One of Pixar's best.
Fun little detail to PIXAR films: Each one has a subtle tell from the next PIXAR film. In Ratatouille, when Remy gets separated from his family and encounters a dog, you can see from the shadow that it's Doug (from Up). As Carl and Ellie's house flies past the little girl's room, you can see her Lots-o-Hugs bear (from Toy Story 3) next to her bed.
Yes and I'm toy story 4 bo peepsnsheep find the grape soda pin
I know it's sad that Ellie died, but they did live to old age together. That's kind of the dream isn't it? Getting to live a full life with the person you love most? Minus the fact that they didn't have kids
Yes it is. And that's what Carl learned to appreciate. He was so focused on what he was never able to give to her that he never thought it was more than enough how happy he made her through all the ups and downs of their life together.
YES!!! Stranger Things is great! You should definitely watch it!!
Lol “NO ONE WARNED ME” 😂
STRANGER THINGS! Unequivocally, without a doubt, 1000% YES.
If you ever get to America, the REAL up house is like 2-3 blocks from my home. People take balloons to tie to the fence daily.
And he can hang out at Fenton’s on Piedmont Ave. in Oakland!
One of my favorite things ever is watching un-suspecting people react to moments like that in movies
The first 10 minutes of this movie are what I use to explain to people that we accept way too much mediocrity in modern storytelling. This didn't even need words.
Yes! 💯 agree
Yes, the Ratatouille and Up have the same musical bits sometimes, because the composer, Michael Giacchino is the same in both film. Giacchino earn an Oscar-nomination for the Ratatouille and won his first (and until now the last) Oscar-award for Up.
He is a musical genius. He composed the scores of Lost, The Incredibles 1-2, Cars 2, Zootopia, Mission: Impossible 3-4, the Jurassic World-trilogy, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man-trilogy, the new Star Trek-trilogy, Jupiter Ascending, Doctor Strange, Thor: Love and Thunder, The Batman (2022), Lightyear…
I don't know it took me until this rewatch (I've probably seen this movie 30 times) for me to realize the House that Carl and Ellie shared is the abandoned house they met in,,, they bought it and fixed it up
This is one of my family’s favorite films. Mostly because of the dogs. We quote them all the time, between the “squirrel “, “i was hiding under your house because I love you”, and “i do not like the cone of shame.” They are such a source of laughter is a very emotional film.
This movie is about grief and letting go, which is so hard, but if you don’t, it’ll consume you.
This was the last movie I saw with my dad and family in the year it came out in 2009 during the summer. 6-7 months later, my dad passed away. This movie will always be a special place in my heart and to show that they will always be with you and that material things dont matter. They live on in the heart, memories and all around you :)
This is without a doubt, one of my favorite movies of all time, the introduction montage, and closing scene with the scrapbook get me every time.
Me too
Same.
Russell is the epitome of an unintentional hero. Carl and Ellie never got to have a kid together, but you can imagine that they would have been very similar to Russ - empathetic, adventurous, and so so thoughtful
My parents hate this movie, but I think it's for a really sweet reason. They love each other very much and they both love to travel so I think this is a really tough movie for both of them. It shows a couple in love that never really get a chance to do the things they want and one of them dies leaving the other feeling guilty about not doing enough with them while they were there. I think it's a big fear for both my parents. So, they don't enjoy it but I'm guessing it's because it hits a little too close to home. They have gotten to travel plenty though so don't feel bad for them! I hope they have many years of traveling together ahead of them.
36:56 - I love to see his growth in how he talks to Russel. When he rescues him, his first words are "I don't want your help." But then he follows it up with "I want you safe!"
This shows how he's learning to communicate with the kid, and how his priorities have shifted over time.
that scrapbook scene towards the end is just as emotional as the opening imo, if not more
edit:
also fun fact, the steering mechanism is legit a coffee grinder, I found that out a few months ago and it lives rent free in my mind. Carl was smart using household stuff to make his steering
This film is a masterpiece- and not just the opening sequence. So many of the jokes throughout the film come back to be critical when it comes to the final confrontation. The tennis ball, the squirrel, the 'Point', and more, the writing is so efficient and on point. All the emotional moments hit so well that they make me tear up every time. I kind pair this with Hot Fuzz as an example of how to write an incredibly poignant screenplay from a ridiculous premise.
I'm glad no one warned you lol. That's the beauty of watching a new movie. I hate spoilers. I've cried to that intro several times, even if it's a kids movie. It's so relatable/real. It's so good. 10/10.
This makes me cry everytime also dug is a very good boy.
Doug*
@@corberus3119his name is spelled Dug. They were right :)
You’re quickly becoming one of my favorite new reactors with your positive vibes and thoughtful commentaries and I would totally LOVE to see you react to Stranger Things all the way through!
I know nothing about Stranger Things but agree with everything else you said. 👍
It's sad how Russel lost that connection he had with his dad, but at least he found someone else who could do the things that his dad used to do with him. Same with Carl.
My girl used to live near peacocks but hadn't seen them yet, so she named him Kevin. One of the first times I came over Kevin showed themselves and we swiftyly found out that "Kevin is a girl?!" happened without her realizing the quote, but it also being true is one of the funniest moments of my life lol.
UP is one of my favourites from Disney.
As for you’re question on dog colour blindness, they have dichromatic vision. So they can see blues and yellows, but can’t see reds or discern proper greens like we can. That’s why a brown or orange toy can get lost in grass to a dog when we can clearly see it.
I love the way the dogs are portrayed in this movie. Dogs can be very intelligent and learn and be trained for a lot of things, but even the most well trained (or “obedient”) dog is still a puppy inside and they all love to play and be goofballs in their own way xD
I’ve worked with RAAF dogs, farm dogs and everything in between. The mother of one of my dogs was a working farm dog and my girl is absolutely insane in how quick she picks things up. She always surprises me with the things she teaches herself or the words she understands me saying (and I’m talking complex). Dogs are amazing creatures. I’m quite passionate as you can tell if you have read this far. Heh..
no one WARNED this poor man
YES TO STRANGER THINGS!!! IT'S SUCH AN AMAZING SERIES, I'D LOVE FOR YOU TO REACT TO IT!!
That opening montage is famous for getting people to cry, and infamous for try not to cry challenges. It's a masterclass in storytelling. I can't even watch it with a RUclips reaction without watering up.
the way I’m actually so protective over these four?? like Carl, Russell, Doug, and Kevin are angels and I just wanna keep them safe 🥹🥰
Not Russel he’s stupid.
YES STRANGER THINGS!
YES! Stranger Things! You better post full reaction on your pateron!

So great to watch anything along with Oscar! Feels like you're watching the movie/show with a thoughtful friend who gets excited with you!! 💙
@@00_Calcifer_00 it was great. But they be messing with my emotions in the beginning?
@@CM.Barrow I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yes the beginning always makes me cry so much. It always hits harder when you've personally lost someone close. You can't help but think about that moment. But I love the message in the end. Your loved one wouldn't want you to obsess over their death and would rather you live like they were still alive. It's ok to grieve, and it's to keep living too ❤
*😂😂The complete change in your facial expression from the baby room to the hospital room was all of us when we first saw this movie! that stuff was PAINFUL!😭😭*
Yes, it’s all “How adorable!” and “so cute” until that point. It picks up with them building a life together, then breaks your heart again. Amazing storytelling with no words.

THANK YOU for being one of the best people on RUclips!
It's clear that you work hard to stay fit. It's great that you're also thoughtful and have a kind soul, too. That's rare, especially on RUclips 🤗
What I love most is how genuine your reactions are! You have a warmth that shines through in every reaction! The Cocoa Couch and staying cozy fits you perfectly!!
I hope there are other guys out there who have that very rare combination of strength and gentleness. I'll admit, I've not found anyone who encapsulates it the way you do. You are unique and express your feelings so effortlessly.
I admire what you represent 👍
I hope you're appreciated outside the RUclips-Verse!! I smile when I see you've uploaded a video 🙂💙 Thank you for being such a beacon of light and bringing joy to all of us who enjoy your content! 🎉
The white and black set up and even the voice before Ellie is introduced, reminded me of Korra and probending. 😂
I was thinking just an hour ago: "Wait. Coco hasn't reacted to Up yet, has he?" and just now this gets uploaded. Love this movie.
This has been said thousand times before, but always worth mentioning. Up was able to tell a better love story in 15 minutes than most movies can't in 2 hours.
The whole feel of the old house surrounded by construction with the property vultures, and the old couple not wanting to be move. Always reminds me of “Batteries Not Included”.
Great observation about both Charles Munz and Karl being obsessed with their goals to the detriment of their own lives. The KEY difference between the two is that Munz was alone, while Karl had loved ones. It was his realization that Ellie had all the adventure she needed in her life with him and in their love, and that he did not need to hold onto this goal but should be open to start a new chapter, and it's the friendship of Russel and also Doug that helped him, while Munz had nothing but his obsession for easily 60 years and that ultimately was his (literal) downfall. There's a lot of raving about the first ten minutes of this movie but it's SUCH A GREAT FILM OVERALL.
Yesss watch Stranger Things! You won't regret it
I agree
R.I.P Ed Asner and Christopher Plummer (Carl and Charles Muntz).
The first ten minutes of this movie don’t make me cry anymore, but Carl reading the book in the third act gets me every time.
OMG! I WATCHED UP, TOO! YOU'LL LOVE IT! I mean, you'll cry, but YOU'LL LOVE IT!!!!
Oscar: “What was THAT Disney?l”
Me: laughing and crying at the same time
Definitely do stranger things. I’d be cool with the whole series in quick succession.
stranger things yes ❤❤❤ the whole series would be nice
This movie is so bonkers. Dealing with death, Dante’s inferno, and containing it in a Rohl Dhal’s “James and the giant peach” esque childhood realistic horror is amazing.
STRANGER THINGS OMG. Resounding yes!!! 👍🏻
Would really enjoy you starting the series so we can all experience it again with you! You will love it!
I think it’s poetic that at the end 34:12 you really see how much was broken, how much he had to lose, symbolized by the house, in order to obtain his goal. All he wanted was to realize his adventure dreams with Elle, but he became so focused on that goal that the house got destroyed in the process and he missed the most important part, what Russell was saying and what Elle shows through the scrapbook. They already had an adventure, they lived one in the quiet moments of their life. Ugh this movie is too good.
The first time I watched Up, it was from the bit where Carl opens the door and Russel is on the porch, and the house is already flying. So I missed the beginning bit with Ellie and their story. For years I just saw that movie as a silly film about a bird, talking dogs, and a flying house. It wasn't until my boyfriend (now husband) said it was one of Disney's best films and it made him sob, that I gave it another chance. Now I get it. That beginning bit gives it ALL the context. What a gut punch. I really enjoyed your reaction to it, Oscar. Your insights into Carl's character journey really gave me a whole new appreciation of the film. Oh and yes, please do Stranger Things! 🙏 Big love from Manchester UK xXx
Not me on a chilled Sunday morning crying my eyes out together with you 😅
Crying while watching you cry over depressing scenes has been a very comforting feeling lately... this is coming from a 25-year-old man
You are such a treasure of a person to watch watching all these things.
I feel so cozy watching all your uploads.
So stoked for Stranger Things! Every season is so great. I'm confident you'll love it.
he didn't know elle was adding to the book still, she did the rest in the hospital
15:35 even this small moment is a tearjerker for me. It's one of the first times Carl gets to see this place that he and his late wife Ellie always dreamed of being able to go to, and it's so beautiful to see his eyes widen and have a genuine smile on his face when he softly says, "There it is."
I can't tell you how many times I've seen Up, but I can tell you I have cried every time. It's beautiful, sad, funny, heartwarming, heartwrenching, and so touching. I am glad that it hit you the way it hit so many of us❤
Yes, Stranger Things is awesome.
Yes Oscar! YES, you should definitely react to/watch Stranger Things! I would upload a couple episodes together though when you drop reactions so it doesn’t take quite so long. (For any show really.) It's really good though so I hope you will watch it. I think you'll like it!

Pixar is the Lord of Foil Characters.
It shows us how two characters who could have become the other is pitted against each other which shows us the main theme of the story.
Carl’s and Charles are both obsessed over a desire of theirs that they are willing to do anything to achieve it. The difference is that Carl was surrounded by good people, while Charles was surrounded by his minions who fueled his desire.
Great ear! This movie and Ratatouille have the same composer - Michael Giacchino 😊
5:28 "Dang dude, that got me!" The gottening has just begun, you were not prepared!
The first 10 minutes of this is a cinematic masterpiece and even watching the brief version you've shown has brought tears to my eyes. i absolutely love this film. I am so sorry that nobody warned you of how heartbreaking this film was. Oh what am i talking about, the whole movie is a powerful message.
This is my three year-old daughters’s favorite movie right now. It’s so good. She has seen it so many times she’s quoting parts. I was watching your reaction while she was in her room watching it and I was watching her in the camera and I looked on the camera and she was gone and I looked up as she was running into my room because she heard the movie we turned the movie off and watched your reaction together ❤
I'm watching this when my grandma recently passed away and now the first 15 minutes just get to me even more 😢
Oh your soul is gonna be shattered
Probably my favorite pixar movie, definitely the most nostalgic! The whole Married Life sequence is absolute peak storytelling!
Yes, dear. The same melody done in different ways it's called "variations on a theme". You will find many composers who do that. This movie won best score precisely because of that. I totally agree that Russell is another embodiment of Ellie. A reincarnation, if we want to go that far. Now you just need to watch Watership Down.
I cry so hard at the beginning, and I'm so happy I'm in good company with that. This such a gem of a movie.
