People don’t ever mention the fact that Thresh was equally as innocent as Rue. That was amazing writing for both of Rue and Thresh’s characters. Their district shines through in them. Innocent and kind hearted. ❤️
ALL the participants of the hunger games are innocent. Even the careers. For the government is ready to sacrifice any of the children that enter the games to continue oppression
Thresh at least had a chance - male, fully grown or close enough. Rue was a little girl - barely 12. No chance against 17 year olds. That's the horror of the Hunger Games.
I just want to say to everyone who thinks the peacekeepers overreacted and didn’t understand the salute: they did. That’s why they reacted that way; because the people acknowledged the horror of the games and showed solidarity with the victors instead of hating them. A major reason for the games was to keep the citizens divided amongst themselves, so for them to salute another district’s victor *is* a significant act of rebellion, especially coming from a district that has rioted over the games in the past.
Exactly...the government propoganda is that the games are a glorious battle amongst warriors. The way Caesar and the other TV personalities treat everything, it's sold as exciting reality TV. Peeta and Katniss go off script here and throw it in the Capitol's face that the games are actually nothing more than the murder of innocent children. What the Capitol fears the most is all of the people uniting against them...they very carefully keep the districts separate from each other and then pit them against each other in the games to foster hate. Any hint of love and unity has to be ruthlessly squashed.
Also the whistling was like a mockingjay, which is a symbol of rebellion against the capitol and the three finger kiss sign means peace or something too
@d I guess it had that effect on me and George. Any orchestral background music is what really carries the mood, as I believe. Though some scenes are better off silent in movies as they give powerful effect, so does the instrumentals for me, which gives me goosebumps.

For an authoritarian government to maintain control, the public must remain divided and respect it above all else. Katniss and Rue brought them together and that is a huge no no. The masses are something to be feared when they’re united, even if it is in the name of love.

That’s the turning point for you? Yeah kids killing each other on television? not too bad, murdering an old man? Terrible! Absolutely disgusting! The Capitol should be destroyed!! 😂😂
In the book, Katniss initially wants to move away from the crowd without saying anything, because she is terrible at using words and also very fearful about the situation after President Snow had threatened to kill her family if she stirs unrest. But then Katniss realizes that making the flower grave for Rue and mourning Rue would get nullified if she would not give an eulogy to Rue right now. Since Katniss wants to maintain honoring Rue, she makes an improvised speech. As the book and film audience has already learned, Katniss is her very best self when she improvises. And the effect is immediate and powerful, which is why she is the Mockingjay without knowing it.
One detail that's being overlooked is the whistle. We all understand the significance of the three fingered salute, but the four note whistle was originally created by Rue to let workers know when peacekeepers were near or when quitting time started. So it's not just the salute to Katniss, it's also a salute to the little Rue-girl who helped everyone else.
What’s really heartbreaking too is as she’s trying to rush out into the crowd to stop the guy’s execution you can hear the other people telling her to go back, overall the scene was really well done
Yeah they tell her to go back cause they know she doesn't want or like what's happening and they see her as a true person, a real and innocent child and they didn't want to see another die
Didn't notice that and I watched this scene probably a few hundred times. But after you mentioned it, yeah I can see it now. Thanks, this makes the scene more intense.

Well this movie made me think of people in the entertainment industry. A lot of them say that all the money and fame doesn’t mean much, that there’s more happing behind the scenes, but everyone puts a smile on for the cameras, and everything looks great. You can see it when Katniss and Peeta went off camera. The “hunger games” might be a symbol for the competition in the entertainment industry. That’s what I personally think at least.
That's the great thing about The Hunger Games series. The underlying message throughout is "this is what happens when your government becomes too powerful"
I cried when I saw this. no joke. I am in tears as I write this comment. Why would they kill him? He was so innocent. He was making a powerful statement. this makes me want to destroy the Capitol.

The way the man doesn't even react. He expected this, District 11 is the most heavily oppressed and militarized as they've tried to revolt before. He's used to any sign of rebellion being met with swift and harsh punishment. He knew what was coming but still thought it was worth it to show Katniss that District 11 is _with her._ Really puts the chosen majority demographic being black in a different light.
The reason why this is such a powerful scene is because though we don’t see it, this is the reality of the world we live in, where everyday people die for their freedom. Hats off to Suzanne Collins and the directors for portraying such a noteworthy scene.
When the music reaches it climax with the scene at 2:11 I start balling every time! And then when the soldiers “load” their batons in beat to the music and the music shifts from its powerful side, to its somber/chaotic-ish side!!!! The music is under appreciated in this series but it plays a HUGE roll in storytelling and enhancing many scenes 😭😭😭
The Hunger Games series has the best film score ever composed. James Newton Howard is a genius. Listen for yourself and enjoy: 08 The Tour (From "Catching Fire - Extended Score")
For those who don't know. The three finger sign is from district 12, so the people are showing a sign of uniting with another district. And katniss is exposing the brutality of the games.
This made me cry because this kind of stuff happens in real life. A lot of innocent people die fighting to be seen as human. Its horrible. There are so many places in the world where you can get killed for speaking against the powerful.
This scene always got me crying 😭 Little Rue was so kind and innocent. I saw in the deleted scenes, where Rue sleeps with Katniss in the first movie, and they are asking each other questions. Rue told Katniss that she had a crush back in District 11 under a blanket cause she don't want anyone watching to hear her. Character development right there but they had it not included in the first movie.
Let us not ever forget: when we are discussing our favorite parts of this movie, Suzanne Collins' overarching message was "This is what happens when your government gets too powerful."
^ That's an arbitrary and overly-generalized statement. It isn't merely about government. You have to look deeper than that. Do not forget the complicity and willingness of the people of Panem (mainly in the Capitol). Despite their conditioning in this post-apocalyptic dystopian futuristic world, these people have a very basic conscience of right and wrong, and they are at least smart enough to know that the killing of innocent young people is wrong deep down. However, the TRUE evil is in that they are so distracted by the excesses of luxury and comforting pleasures and are so wealthy and privileged, they don't have to care about or even know about the suffering of the people in the districts. No tyrannical regime ever gets done what it gets done without the complicity and acceptance of the status quo by its brainwashed people. It is never as simple as a government that gets too powerful. In Panem's case, the government was always powerful. The whole reason for the Hunger Games is because the districts lost their first war of rebellion against the Capitol. What is truly terrible about the Capitol is that it's not so much that they enforce the Hunger Games, but that they paint the situation as the districts being reliant on the Capitol for necessary resources and that the Capitol is this benevolent and giving entity, so long as the districts toe the line. In reality, of course, the Capitol gives next to nothing to the districts except misery and grief and most of the districts' resources are relegated to the Capitol while the people who operate the means of production are left to starve.
Thats an oversimplification The message is basiclly when the Rich and Powerfoull disconect from reality in their enclossed space, sorrounded by luxary While they let the working classes struggle and starve Panem isn't an absolute dictatorship, Snow is preety handsoff and delegates alot of his power, Hell the capitol has almost no controll over the districts beyond brutalty, there is rampant black market sales, and constant unrest Panem is more of a failled facist-oligarchy, All the pepole in power either inherited or gainned it trough favors, and have no idea how to run the goverment Any competent leader knows one thing; dont let pepole fear you, the best dictatorships succeed only with the suport of the pepole
This not about dictatorship. Its about class struggle. The capitol exploits the 12 districts and continues to live in luxury. The movies clearly shown what happens when the gap between the rich and the poor becomes so high.
From the old man's face, I think he knew he wouldn't get away with it. But after living under oppression for such a long time, he's simply had enough. It's also very likely that he had nothing else to lose.
This scene gets me every time. The innocence of Rue and the salute being a sign of respect and I see you. The peacemakers knew this would start a rebellion so they made sure the district knew their place but he didn’t deserve it, none of them did.
I just barely noticed the black man telling Katniss to get back and not get into the mix as the peacekeepers are moving in. He knows none of this is her fault, but they know their people are willing to fight back, they just needed the encouragement.
It's a little more nuanced than that. Katniss spoke against the games in her speech by recognizing the humanity in both the tributes lost, and during the games gave Rue her humanity and recognized her life by surrounding her with flowers and saying goodbye to her. By going against how the Capitol portrays their sacrifice as 'willing' and 'for the cause' by telling it how it truly is- a death sentence- and having the citizens in return recognize that humanity is what goes against the Capitol's "teachings". The symbol of goodbye to the Capitol means the people claiming their humanity back- and that's why it becomes their symbol.
The three finger sign is from district 12. So they were showing a sign of uniting with another district. And katniss was exposing the truth of the brutality of the games.
This is one of the saddest and most unrecognised moments, apart from when the games start. I think District 11 is much more of a stern place than District 12, and the book also proves it as well. Also, I love Katniss’ outfit.
People have noticed that Rue's father wasn't there, but, in the credits of the film it is revealed that the woman standing with the children who are likely Rue's siblings, she is actually Rue's aunt. Meaning both of Rue's parents were probably killed because of the riots following her death 😭
The saddest part this movie it's reflecting our world right now and people don't even see it. The government cackling and enjoying us being dumb down spiritually mentally and physically and it seems as no matter what, a person that tells the truth about the government and their evil plots dies.
Thank you! And I'm always surprised how the viewers didn't connect the movies with reality... It's literally a copy and paste... Every year I watch the movies' clips, and it gets more relatable each time,,, 💔
And thank you so much for the bread. That was a really significant gesture in the first book that the people of District 11 pulled together resources and sent Katniss bread after Rue was killed. No District had ever sent the tribute from another District a parachute of supplies. Even missing that detail, this scene is still so powerful!
Excellent filmography. I love how the camera focuses on Katniss while Peeta is talking, to focus on her emotion. Showing Rue’s family really made the audience relate to the emotion and sadness in losing family. And most of all, I love how to doors close while the old man gets shot.
Jennifer Lawrence is the best actor ever, she was trying to help rue, thresh, and everyone else, that man that they shot just for the laughter of the Capitol, everyday the people at the districts are disrespected and hit and punched, the man did nothing for him to get shot,he was a kind-hearted man,as I write this comment,I am in tears,I have cried through the hunger and catching fire.this is just not fair to him.❤️ R.I.P kind man
He used the three finger salute that traditionally is only used by people in District 12. People from 11 using it signified that the districts were in unity, and that for the Capitol is unacceptable because it could lead to an uprising
Angel Renteria it’s to show respect and love to a person. In the books it’s described as an old custom that is used for funerals commonly. It’s to say goodby to a person you love and showing gratitude. That’s why Katniss does it after Rues death. It started the rebellion and is a sign of resistance.
It’s crazy to me how thresh had so little screen time but yet I feel as if I know him. He might not be as innocent as rue but he plays a big role. If he didn’t spare katniss there would be no revolution, I can also tell by his families reactions and his parts in the movie and book that he was very caring and even if he didn’t stick and try to protect the the whole time I know he stilled cared for her and was a great guy overall.
also I just noticed what’s even more heartbreaking and shows just how good theses actors are is you can see as Katniss approaches the crowd you can hear some of the people telling her to go back
I really love the change in the peacekeepers' outfits from the first movie to the second. Looks much more dystopian, threatening, badass, faceless, inhuman
These movies are aging quite well... A lot of people hated them when they came out... But watching them over again... It really is a good story. Has a very important message too
Interesting that this seems to be a huge reoccurring pattern with us and our relationship towards entertainment. There were crowds of hate and criticism among films that are now considered “masterpieces” that flogged the box office upon release like The Thing, which is now widely regarded as one of the best horror sci-fi films of all time by so many. I wonder what it is that makes something age to it’s “nostalgic” phase that makes it less hated than something newer rather than just nostalgic bias. That’s something that makes me super curious.
@@lulub517 I think it can all be explained by one word: Emotion. People are emotional. They get hyped for a new movie and when it comes out and doesn't meet their emotionally overladen expectation the crowds mood swings into hate, and if a new movie is hated, it basically has already lost the battle - as even people who haven't watched it will join the hatecycle. Luckily emotions get less intense after the years and only then people can see these movies through a more... rational lens. Appreciating for what they are and with expectations now being more of a blank slate than already tarnished by the outrage of past times. Its the same thing with any entertainment media. Music and Video games for example, always have those specific gens that when they come out everybody hates on them just because something just didn't feel right to the emotional crowds and years down the line, suddenly people start noticing those titles aren't so bad after-all.
I think they did that before the games, like every single one of them were asked to stand and be filmed. Its like a tradition almost every game So if ever they lost or died they will be shown when the winner visits their district.
My little sister died when she was 21 so what Peeta says I totally support his words. She was too young too gentle, but she impact the life of so many. Thank you The Hunger Games RIP Romina Soberanis Prado

I like that unlike most book to movie scenario's, they end up changing a lot of stuff. But glad to say they kept these movies as close to the books as they could with a few differences that were ok.
i never caught this before but that guy from district 11 in 2:29 was trying to push katniss away.. she really means so much to them and it's like saying "it's fine... he'll inevitably die. the important thing is that you stay safe, mockingjay" and that makes me so sad
The old man knew it was his last breath if he whistled but went for it anyway. Trying to create a better future for the younger generation. A noble sacrafice and eventually he's a small part of a big revolution.
In my head cannon I like to think that the reason rues father wasn’t there is because he was the first guy we see start the riot after her death in the first movie. And the old man who raised his fingers was her grandfather

The fact that with the back lives matter protests this is so true makes me sad . The police represent the capital

"i see her in the flowers that grow in the meadow by my house, i hear her in a mockingjay's song, i see her in my sister prim." BYE IM CRYING
The reason why this is such a powerful scene is because though we don’t see it, this is the reality of the world we live in, where everyday people die for their freedom. Hats off to Suzanne Collins and the directors for portraying such a noteworthy scene.
The crowed telling Katniss to go back and to go away so she would be safe is what hurts the most
When the music reaches it climax with the scene at 2:11 I start balling every time!
Listen for yourself and enjoy:
08 The Tour (From "Catching Fire - Extended Score")
Peeta's reaction after that man was shot gets me everytime 😭
IKKKKKK
Rue's mother crying, and her brother trying to hold back tears is what gets me.
I think we can consider that musical score the hunger games theme music, since we hear it often in the films
Yeah, the theme ends the whole franchise in Mockingjay
Well maybe Rue plays a bigger part than we know
Kyland Actually, most people do know how big of a part she had
I was literally crying theaters when I first saw this
For those who don't know.
It's what happens when you put an injury to your pride as being more important than a wound to humanity.
@@rominn2184 wdym they give nothing to the districts? Yknow there's such a thing called Tesserae in the books right?
Thats an oversimplification
The message is basiclly when the Rich and Powerfoull disconect from reality in their enclossed space, sorrounded by luxary
While they let the working classes struggle and starve
Panem isn't an absolute dictatorship, Snow is preety handsoff and delegates alot of his power, Hell the capitol has almost no controll over the districts beyond brutalty, there is rampant black market sales, and constant unrest
Panem is more of a failled facist-oligarchy, All the pepole in power either inherited or gainned it trough favors, and have no idea how to run the goverment
Any competent leader knows one thing; dont let pepole fear you, the best dictatorships succeed only with the suport of the pepole
This not about dictatorship. Its about class struggle. The capitol exploits the 12 districts and continues to live in luxury. The movies clearly shown what happens when the gap between the rich and the poor becomes so high.
Morgan Freeman no
You have no idea how hard your comment made me laugh😅😆😂

+Amy Law oh no gordon freeman
Oh my god nooo, he wasn't ready!
Wheatley Glados GORDON 😂
I love how Haymitch held her and protected her, even though he got punched
God that speech for Rue was so perfectly written. Simple but it cuts rights though. Beautiful.
and the moment katniss stopped and made eye contact before her speech while the music started playing. i knew it was going to hit me
It broke my heart seeing Rue on that screen, and seeing Rue's family and mother. so sad :c
Rue's siblings trying to stay strong and not to cry 💔
From the old man's face, I think he knew he wouldn't get away with it. But after living under oppression for such a long time, he's simply had enough. It's also very likely that he had nothing else to lose.
no matter how many years have passed, this scene always gets to make my cry
This scene gets me every time. The innocence of Rue and the salute being a sign of respect and I see you. The peacemakers knew this would start a rebellion so they made sure the district knew their place but he didn’t deserve it, none of them did.
I forget how amazing of an actress Jennifer Lawrence is her emotion in this scene sends chills down your spine
The old man raises his fingers and starts to whistle
What everyone thinks: "Poor old man"
What the old man thinks: "YOOOLOOO"
This scene is more heartbreaking for they added Rue's Death Song
The pain in her voice when she's crying "Leave him alone!!" and "What did I do!?"
I just barely noticed the black man telling Katniss to get back and not get into the mix as the peacekeepers are moving in. He knows none of this is her fault, but they know their people are willing to fight back, they just needed the encouragement.
the three-finger salute always gives me goosebumps
I forgot why they were punished was it that the Capitol thought that was a sign of an uprising?
spot on
That One Artist you’re lost
Doggo How is he lost when he guessed it correctly?
0:42 Lol Typical Haymitch
lol xD
I actually like their speeches here more than in the books
She was too young, too gentle and I couldn't save her. I'm sorry. It makes me cry like a child. 😢😢😢😢
Every year I watch the movies' clips, and it gets more relatable each time,,, 💔
@@FunSoSoToTo Every movie Hollyweird has put out is mockery in a sense. Like they know what they are doing.
And thank you so much for the bread.
That was a really significant gesture in the first book that the people of District 11 pulled together resources and sent Katniss bread after Rue was killed. No District had ever sent the tribute from another District a parachute of supplies. Even missing that detail, this scene is still so powerful!
this scene is very near to the experiences katniss made in the book. district 11 is like a ghetto.
Frishta RATATATATATAAAAAAA
Frishta RATATATAAAA
Frishta you made me laugh for all the wrong reasons but thank you anyways, i still haven’t recovered from mockingjay’s ending ;(
Excellent filmography. I love how the camera focuses on Katniss while Peeta is talking, to focus on her emotion. Showing Rue’s family really made the audience relate to the emotion and sadness in losing family. And most of all, I love how to doors close while the old man gets shot.
You mean cinematography
Jennifer Lawrence's acting was soo perfect in this movie
Yep. She’s a phenomenal actress but to me, she did better in the film mother!. To me that was her best performance I’ve seen
1:00 that's when all the tears came down...
Jennifer Lawrence is the best actor ever, she was trying to help rue, thresh, and everyone else, that man that they shot just for the laughter of the Capitol, everyday the people at the districts are disrespected and hit and punched, the man did nothing for him to get shot,he was a kind-hearted man,as I write this comment,I am in tears,I have cried through the hunger and catching fire.this is just not fair to him.❤️ R.I.P kind man
One of the most impactful scene to me. I cry everytime, readind or watching the film!
This speech started the rebellion.
What DID he do?
He don't deserve to be treated like that
He used the three finger salute that traditionally is only used by people in District 12.
Angel Renteria Nope. It was because of the mockingjay song. The capitol thought of it as an uprising.
Edit- try to protect and stay with rue is what I meant lol
This scene makes me cry !!! Katniss speech is so deep and emotional, so genuine and honest.. and her acting is superb, so raw!!
also I just noticed what’s even more heartbreaking and shows just how good theses actors are is you can see as Katniss approaches the crowd you can hear some of the people telling her to go back
very powerful scene of respect, i get the chills watching it
Katniss is clearly suffering from PTSD and survivor's guilt.
I know. An understatement.
I really love the change in the peacekeepers' outfits from the first movie to the second. Looks much more dystopian, threatening, badass, faceless, inhuman
I have read the book, and this scene made be cry both in the book and in the movie. This story is amazing and meaningful
I almost cried when I saw the man being dragged by the peacekeepers
This scene is so sad, made me cried like a baby, specially because of the music in the background....
How did they get those holographic images?
Like did the tributes just stand in front of a camera for a couple of seconds or what?
Probably.
Ikr
Basquetball players and futbol players do that for like a decade.
Or maybe it's in universe CGI.
Like reconstructions of them, since they are dead.
I think they did that before the games, like every single one of them were asked to stand and be filmed. Its like a tradition almost every game
So if ever they lost or died they will be shown when the winner visits their district.
Kimberley Drummond absolutely nailed her role as Rue's Aunt (it's not her mom). I've never seen someone so visibly undone in their face
My little sister died when she was 21 so what Peeta says I totally support his words. She was too young too gentle, but she impact the life of so many. Thank you The Hunger Games
RIP Romina Soberanis Prado
May she rest in peace ❤🌸
It breaks my heart to look at eyes family her little siblings trying to hold in their tears her mom breaking inside
Oh how I miss the years when hunger games were barely being released and excited to see the movies after reading the books. Man 2021 is really making me wish to go back in time
There’s a new one coming out next November. :)
I love this scene it was so powerful and jennifers preformance was absolutely amazing and josh's face when they pulled the trigger they protrayed everything so well and this scene was very heartbreaking
It's hard to see in this vantage point but even Rue's mom and her children made the three middle fingers same as Thresh's family too
I FOUND IT! The "No! Leave him alone! Leave him alone!" at the end of the speech has been haunting be all day and I couldn't figure out what movie it was from! I can sleep now 😇
*RUE (ROOH) in old Indian times meant 'SOUL'/'SPIRIT'... It still does*
“what did i do” always gets to me because katniss blames everything on herself
I like that unlike most book to movie scenario's, they end up changing a lot of stuff. But glad to say they kept these movies as close to the books as they could with a few differences that were ok.
This scene never fails to bring a tear to my eye. 😢
i never caught this before but that guy from district 11 in 2:29 was trying to push katniss away.. she really means so much to them and it's like saying "it's fine... he'll inevitably die. the important thing is that you stay safe, mockingjay" and that makes me so sad
The old man knew it was his last breath if he whistled but went for it anyway. Trying to create a better future for the younger generation. A noble sacrafice and eventually he's a small part of a big revolution.
You know it's good acting when u see the shock on Peeta's face and they way he shakes that it is great acting
Elizabeth Banks played her character really well. I didn't even realize it was her until years later
In my head cannon I like to think that the reason rues father wasn’t there is because he was the first guy we see start the riot after her death in the first movie. And the old man who raised his fingers was her grandfather
