You can tell she was for a split second relieved that Peeta volunteered. But than it turns to sadness because although she won’t be losing someone she clearly has feelings for in haymitch she’s just gonna lose another person she cares about.
Effie had one of the best character transitions in the entire trilogy. In the first book/movie, she seems so bubbly and superficial, but during this scene she can barely stop herself from crying
Not only that, but her character is so underrated, she could've been way more developed as a character, in Mockingjay she was tortured and it was never really delved into (for obvious reasons) but it seems like such a waste, she was basically useless to either side, the Capitol wanted information that she couldn't give, and the rebels obviously didn't trust her, it was just such a waste of a good character!
@mystic edits I wrote a new version of the hunger games in an alternate reality where the 3rd quarter quell was not tampered with. It takes place from the viewpoint of someone in district 1, its a sample, but I do go into the capitol and talk about the people like effie. Please come listen and like!
Effie is, in my view, the most interesting and wonderful character. She was NEVER mere comic relief, never unimportant--and it was a shame that we got so little follow-up on her in Mockingjay. (The movies essentially fixed that, but left out the torture bit, which is pretty danged significant.) I never found any reason to see her as anything but selfless, and my appreciation of her depth goes so, so much further than "She was a silly heartless Capitol goon who suddenly became a good person thanks to almighty Katniss Everdeen." Gah, no.
TheSilverCorgi she was never heartless. It was kind of a coping mechanism for her. You know, mentoring two people and then watching them die is kind of a depressing job.
You can see the pain on both of their faces during this exchange. The tears in Peeta's eyes....he's volunteering, but he knows it will likely mean death for both of them.
Absolutely! Haymitch promised to Katniss he would volunteer for Peeta if he was chosen, and you could see he didn't want Peeta to go in for him.He doesn't want Peeta and Katniss to de, and I think he would go in because he doesn't really care about life anymore

@@justcogitating They’d have just disgussed plans as a group and Peeta maybe would have tried to force Haymitch to train with a weapon and get in some sort of shape
The plan really doesn’t make sense with Peeta not in the game though The reason they become icons is because their win was so famous and the Capitol yanking them back in showed everyone how cruel and unfair their rulers were Plus Haymitch was the guy who’d played the long game and had all the contacts and whatnot…
The look on Peeta's face when he tells Haymitch, *"let go"* is dead-serious; he's not joking around, he's not uncertain -- he's fully committed to his course of action, which is protecting, and if at all possible, saving Katniss. Well done, Josh Hutcherson!
The way I perceived this scene is that Peeta also wanted to protect Haymitch. By Peeta going into the 75th Hunger Games, he gets to protect Katniss and he also prevents Haymitch from having to go through the games. I think Peeta also cared a lot about Haymitch too, not just Katniss
@@bekahswanson Also Haymitch is highly capable and useful outside of the game arena, as demonstrated repeatedly in the series. Had Peeta stayed outside he wouldn't be able to help Katniss the way Haymitch can.
@@unwishfulthinki dont think it was about that. Haymitch being a trained killer could have also helped Katniss. Peeta is just so pure that he wanted to be the one to die for her instead of Haymitch
This scene was sad though. When Effie said ladies first, all the way through while she was picking Katniss' name and everything, her face was sympathetic.
Hannah R. For her, it is truly tragic. For all her years as the coordinator, she told herself not to get attached because her tributes would most likely die. Now against the odds, two of them survived; only to be sent into the games again. She got close.
I know that Peeta obviously had to be the male tribute in Catching Fire for the story to progress, but it would've been SO interesting if we got to see Haymitch in the Hunger Games
Ironically, he become a Victor after a Quell too. And the way he won is rather brilliant however his experience in the Games is as traumatic as Everlark's.
2:02 The significance of Mrs. Everdeen being the one to start the salute and not Prim is huge, Prim is immune, everyone loves Prim, but Mrs. Everdeen has and will always be an option to be targeted by the capitol and knowing that she's lost her husband and her best friend to the Games, and now she has to face the reality that her daughter will also be a tribute for the 2nd time in a row, risks it all to thank her for everything she's done for Prim while she was too depressed to do anything.
Prim is not immune though? She's only 13, and if the Hunger Games had persisted, she'd have 5 more chances of being reaped, and it's long suspected that family members of Victors have a disproportionately higher chance of getting reaped as a method of controlling the Victors. Katniss, even if she did survive the Quarter Quell, can't even volunteer as Tribute by that point in place of Prim as she'd be too old to qualify.
@@themisheika yeah but no one wants to watch prim die. it doesn't matter if it's in the games or not, punishing katniss on a personal level isn't worth upsetting the districts and the capitol that badly.
@@themisheikaImmune as in she's too significant of a public figure since she's a key figure/driving force on Katniss' dramatic story that the masses are invested in. Everyone knows the story of "Katniss volunteered to protect her sister, Primrose" but their mom isn't well known. If the capitol killed Prim off, it would enrage both the citizens of the capitol (who are invested in Katniss' story as their entertainment) and the districts who see Prim as like, a catalyst for Katniss' rebellion
@@themisheikaI think the person means that if they would’ve targeted Prim for saluting there would’ve been a riot because she’s loved by the people that live in the Capitol.
Love how Effie is portrayed in this. When first introduced, she appeared very flamboyant and more concerned with her job. This time, her appearance is still a bit flashy, but more modest and the pain she feels when pulling their names out is evident. Love how much she has changed since the beginning
If you read the book, she always complained about being assigned to District 12 and hoped to move to District 1 or 2. She never really cared for those tributes because she'd only know them for a week before they died. Katniss and Peeta, being winners, showed her that they're more than just "tributes"; they're people, so naturally she grew to know them (also doesn't hurt that she got part of the attention as well). Her relationship with Haymitch also improved: Katniss was the one who "sobered" him up; in the meantime, he was a drunk who also didn't care much for the tributes. But I agree: they did an excellent job of showing how Effie grew from a snob to an actual human being. And even though she should have been imprisoned in Mockingjay, I like that they took liberty and showed her in District 13 without her flamboyant looks.
wiinterflowers In the behind the scenes clips they clarify that it isn't just based off of McQueen's dress, it IS one of his dresses that they had to ask to borrow.
I love how in this scene, when Effie and Katniss look at each other, you can see just how hard Effie is having to work to keep from weeping herself. The actress who plays Effie Trinket did an amazing job.
The way in which Effie exhales while she says: "Haymitch Abernathy" always sounded to me like: "At least one of my children is safe." Damn it hurts. Edit: oh my god, I’ve never received so many likes on RUclips. Thank you very much guys! Edit part 2: can’t believe this reached 10.000, you’re amazing guys!
@@matthewspinazze4118 i'm pretty sure it was a sigh of relief when she read the card; you can tell she was shocked when peeta volunteered. she's pretty naive when you think about the fact that only katniss and haymitch were discussing these plans
That's what i love she was relieved it wasn't Peeta because she actually cares about both of them but can't show it cause she is there to be something like the face of the Capitol
She freaked out because she knew right away that Peeta would volunteer, and that Haymitch couldn't stop him. She was hoping the opposite would happen, that if Peeta's name was selected, Haymitch would volunteer as they agreed.
She was never aware that both Katniss and Peeta had been negotiating with Haymitch to save each other. While Katniss counted on Haymitch to save Peeta, Haymitch knew he could do nothing for Peeta if he was reaped instead, because Peeta wanted to be the one to protect Katniss. Both men were planning to volunteer for each other... In a way, all three were ready to die to save at least one other person, although Haymitch was never in that to-rescue list he was still up for it. Effie's is a sigh of relief, because she was more attached to young, more innocent Peeta than Haymitch at the time. That's why her relief was quickly shifted to grief. Still, the show had to go on.
And panem is latin for bread. And each district has their own signature pastry. And cookies were used as a method of communication during both rebellions. THG is one massive unapologetic bread pun.
I love how Peeta doesn’t hesitate AT ALL to volunteer and go with the girl he loves, even when he’s not sure if she loves him. As soon as Effie announced Haymitch’s name Peeta didn’t have to think twice about sacrificing his life for Katniss.
He was sacrificing for Haymitch not Katniss. Peeta already knows Haymitch would die to protect Katniss. He is just so pure that he will even die to save an old drunkard
@@killerdiva7771 I think it is probably both, knowing how softhearted Peeta is. He is probably both trying to spare Haymitch since he's older and wanting to be there to try to protect Katniss. In volunteering he can try to protect both people at the same time.
1:00 The impact of the silent tear in her left eye is amazingly executed. Sends the perfect message to the viewer as to what is going through her head. Also, notice how when Peeta is selected, her other eye cries a single tear as well, as though her counterpart has been killed already? Beautiful symbolism in this scene, truly.
Katniss's mom went blank on Prim and Katniss after her husband died, and throughout the first movie I kind of saw that in her personality and the way she acted. But in this, she raises her three fingers and she looks so defiant it makes me think that seeing Katniss in the Games and seeing her being Reaped again jolted her out of that and made her realize how angry she is towards the Capitol. Well played, Francis Lawrence. I thought it was a great touch.
+Abby Beck Hmm. I sort of just realized that there was something up with the mother (well I noticed this the first time, but it was more apparent after the 2nd watch). I remember feeling a bit teed-off how it seemed the protagonist effectively did the female equivalent of emasculating her mother with regard to telling her to look after her sister. I could have bought that if say her mother had drank too much, or periodically just becomes completely listless, but I still don't think they did such a great job convincing the audience that there was really something wrong with the main character's mother (I remember only one scene really that hinted this and it lasted maybe15 seconds at best).
I thought it was a nice touch having Prim and her mom be the ones to start the 3 finger salute in this clip. They both used to be so timid, with none of the fire that Katniss has. But now they're starting to stand up for themselves and they know this salute is viewed by Snow as an act of defiance but they're finally to the point of saying FU we don't care anymore.
Mlpcreativeside Uh no, somebody informed me that the 3 finger is their District's signal, the others got killed because it wasn’t their District symbol
They need to make a film about Haymitch's hunger games. Edit: Wow, 9.8 thousand likes after three years? I don’t even remember commenting this... Edit: Two months since my last edit. Now four years since my comment and now 11 thousand likes. Why?
I'm afraid that would turn out to be depressing. In the trilogy, the districts start to riot agaist the Capitol and hope is born in the form of Katniss Everdeen. Haymitch on the other hand won, but hardly anything good came of it apart from the fact that he stayed alive.
I absolutely adore Effie's character development between the two books/movies. In the first one, she's so enthusiastic and peppy while pulling the names but in this movie, she can barely hold back her tears. Her face after pulling Katniss' name is so tragic and sympathetic. You can tell how close these characters have bonded
I personally think they should have added the book scene where Katniss and peeta watch the old dvd of Hatmitches hunger games, it adds a lot more to the second book.
No, she's heartbroken. I think they have developed feelings for each other and are hiding it because they're not supposed to have an intimate relationship. Somewhere in Mockingjay part 2 it deviates from the books and they share a kiss. They did the same with Glimmer and Cato for the films, too. They didn't seem to have a relationship, just flirting. But it was still a big difference.
I loved this part and the part when she bids them farewell. She made me emotional when she said, "my victors. You both deserved so much better. I am so sorry". I was glad to see that it all became real to her and not just some game. She finally realized how it felt to send people you love into an arena to be a pawn.
Sometimes I imagine what would've happened if peeta got picked and then haymitch volunteered to take his place. Would peeta end up just having a mental breakdown or something because all peeta ever wants to do is protect katniss
asia w ok, I'm about to fangirl. I'm on Team PEETA, however I think Katniss is perfectly capable of accomplishing things on her own. But I imagine it would be super cute, (and very sad) watching Peeta try and fail to save the girl he loves. All Peeta has ever done was try to save Katniss, and when he can't, I imagine that would be his breaking point. I imagine Haymitch keeping Katniss alive and killing himself in the end, so that Katniss may return to Peeta, and they would be back together again. However, the rest of the story would be totally different, and ya you get the point. But maybe Prim wouldn't die? Idk, sorry for wasting your time if anyone stopped to read this. It's just a theory, PLEASE DONT ATTACK ME TEAM GALE!!
Haymitch probably wouldn't have volunteered as he needed to stay on the outside to help coordinate the victors' escape from the arena. He likely would have just let Peeta justify his not volunteering to Katniss.
@@mahbubamizanmurshed3394 he promised her that he would volunteer though. I genuinely think he would have done it. He tried to stop Peeta from volunteering for him, even though he said to Katniss that there was nothing he could do in that situation
Technically, he would've had to take one haymitch's role as "trainer" kind of and he would have to work to get them sponsors and whatnot where possible like haymitch does when oeeta and katniss are both in. That would've been strange, and probably heartbreaking to see oeeta desperately trying to get them sponsors and get them as much as possible.
Mila Dimitrijevic PEETA didn't have a beloved sister to worry about. Katniss was in shock. After the amount of times her name had been put in, she was SO surprised that Prim was picked.
I noticed too, Prim and her mom started it. That's a bold move for two people who used to be so timid. Probably pissed Snow off, just more evidence that Katniss is starting to rub off on others.
i love Effie! In the first movie you think she is a bitch and all but in this scene you see that she doesnt want do do it because she loves Katniss, Peeta and Haymitch, she doesnt want to lose them but she knows that they have to die in the arena
One thing I give the films credit for was making Effie infinitely more likeable and human. In the books, she was a'ight, but the movies made me want to be her BFF.
And when the Peacekeepers are dragging Katniss and Peeta away, you hear her say, "wait, wait," I assume she's saying "wait" because Katniss and Peeta are supposed to be able to say goodbye.
The way Katniss just turns when Haymitch's name is announced is just heartbreaking. She knew Peeta would volunteer if Haymitch got reaped, and Haymitch had promised her that he would volunteer if Peeta got reaped.
I absolutely love Peeta's "Let go." It has the perfect combo of strength without being disrepectful. You feel their love and loyalty for each other. Even Effie seemed relieved when she picked Haymitch's name.
It didn't take me until this point to love Effie. From her introduction I recognized her super-smiley, seemingly over-excited, excessively cheery & bubbly & bouncy facade as a forced but necessary act (one that would inevitably start to crack sooner or later.) She's a mere cog in the system, and there's not a thing she can do to stop it. All she can do is try her very best on behalf of her district and its tributes, which she does. I never disliked her. Making assumptions was all too easy; right away in the book, Katniss talks to you about this lady as if she knows her personally and/or can read her mind. But I didn't let the narrator dictate what I thought of other people. The more she hammered me with "You should hate this person," the more I saw that there was no actual reason to. I've never seen Effie's development as a simple "Oh, the oblivious dolt who loved child-murder was suddenly, miraculously changed when these two magically super-special people came along." I always gave her a great deal more credit than that. I saw it more like them unwittingly helping her to start overcoming the fear of her true self--beginning to trust and embrace it more, as opposed to continually repressing and rejecting it in favor of what her culture pressures her to be. Accepting that it's possible for those around her to be the ones who are wrong. That compassion is not weakness. Butterflies are symbols of metamorphosis and transformation. They begin life in one form...they enter a tight, confining, restrictive cocoon inside which they begin to undergo subtle and then dramatic changes...ultimately emerging in a new, freer and more empowered form. This seems fitting. It isn't a matter of her not "having the guts" to stand up to the Capitol (indeed, she's more honest when the risk is only to herself); it's the fact that that would do less than no good. She can't change the way things are, or doesn't believe she can. It could only create a mess of trouble and put others in danger. She feels alone and helpless and, in her home, pretty much is. And this is why she's my favorite. The movies did not change her or "humanize" her; it's there all along if you bother to read between the lines and think, consider the subtext.
NOTHING was going to stop Peeta from going back into the arena. No pause, no hesitation. Just the will to protect to the woman he loves. We should all strive to be like Peeta.
Peeta’s coldest scene. His facial expression shows he accepted that he’s in the games already. Ready to protect Haymitch AND Katniss. He’s an amazing character
Wow, you can really see Effie's character development. You can tell she really loved them all, especially Haymitch since they've been a team for a long time. She didn't wanna let them go.
Up until now Effie thought of herself as part of the Capitol with all of the perks that go with that. At this moment, having to call names of people she now cares about, she suddenly realizes she is also just a pawn being used by Snow.
@@moeball740 snow didn't give them any consequences for this did he? The order to deny them a goodbye was probably not by snow but rather by the general who got noticed and intervened immediately
I love this scene because it shows the sympathy people in the Capitol have for the other districts. Yes, they have no fear of hunger or having no shelter but they themselves were victims of tyranny as well. In the books you see so many Capitol citizens who sympathized the districts. They knew it was wrong but if they said anything they too would become victims (just look at what happened to Katniss' stylists). So, in this scene you see that break in Effie's mask. She chose this job for a reason: to help these kids survive. And finally after all her years of working she finally has not one but two victors that she and Haymitch were able to assist in getting them out of the games only to have them meet a certain death a year later. To finally have success only for it to be taken away must be absolutely devastating and you can see at this moment she is done with the Games.
Katniss’s prep team actually survived and they were taken to District 13 after the 75th. Coin tortured them thinking it would make Katniss happy. They helped her prepare for Snow’s execution.
In the first movie (and book) it's the first time when Effie is the presenter for this "show" and she doesn't know what is it in the real life. So after know Haymitch, and Peeta, and Katniss, she is horrified by the 75 Hunger Games because now, she knows
lolo loulou Yeah, but she knew Haymitch for a very long time. The 74th wasn't her first games as an escort. I read that she had been working for a few years with Haymitch. I read also that she cried at night because she felt sorry for every tribute she had chosen and that they died, but she couldn't do it in front of the others especially if they are the people of the capital. I read it on wiki
Honestly, it seems ever since she is in charge of district 12 this is the first time a victor came from her district, let alone 2. From her perspective she's getting cheated out of her triumph of getting a victor through the games. That's my interpretation anyways.
She already has the experience of having escorted two D12 victors on the year of their win, and through the Victory Tour...she isn't being cheated out of that. I don't believe this plays a role with her. Certainly the prep trio, who had to be minimized and unnamed in the movies, were disappointed to lose out on future "Katniss & Peeta" things for their own sakes, but with Effie I believe it's all about them.
Jacek Mazur Both. Relieved as she likely didn't want both Katniss and Peeta to die but sad because that means Haymitch will instead. Perhaps the prevailing emotion in her voice right then was mainly relief-- the idea of losing both of the star-crossed lovers was probably on her mind, but not in a way that's selfish and ignored Haymitch. But she didn't expect Peeta to volunteer.
Anguished. She loves all three and definitely knew that both guys were very likely to volunteer in one another's place. It could've been either of them, depending on whether one could convince the other to let him go...
hyacinthos she was definitely relieved because Peeta was not going to fight,he was a young boy you know she wanted him to be protected, she surely feels sad about Haymitch going but she felt relief because she did not imagine that Peeta would volunteer
When Peeta volunteered gave me such goosebumps and chills! Just like when Katniss volunteered for Primrose! I also really love Effie's butterfly outfit!
I was really gutted that they didn’t explain how Haymitch won in the films. Luckily it’s explained in the books. In Haymitch’s games, the arena was a Poison Paradise and there were 48 tributes instead of 24 because it was the second Quarter Quell. Pretty much everything except for a few things the Capitol provided in the arena was toxic so a lot of the tributes died from dehydration or starvation. Haymitch won by pretty much dodging and hiding from all the tributes so he wouldn’t have to fight anyone until he found a forcefield at the edge of the arena which caused things to bounce off of it and back up to the tribute if they dropped things at the forcefield. So Haymitch decided to use it as a weapon for when the only other tribute left (a girl from district 1), found him, and they started fighting and she cut open his stomach with an axe, so he led her to the forcefield where she threw her axe at Haymitch, and the axe bounced back up off the forcefield and lodged in her head, killing her. That’s how Haymitch won. Obviously the Capitol wasn’t happy that Haymitch outsmarted them by using the forcefield as a weapon, so two weeks after Haymitch won the games, the Capitol had Haymitch’s mother, younger brother, and girlfriend killed as a punishment.
Tuyet Ngoc In the book Catching Fire it shows some part of Haymitch's Games and it was cool because it was a Quarter Quell so there were double the tributes.
i’ve always loved this scene because to me it seems like the very first time Effie sees the horrors and terrible things the capital/President Snow is capable of. she never cares before but after the 74th games she really got to meet the kids and people that are affected. and this scene does a great job of showing her newly found resentment towards the capitol as well as her sadness and anger for the victors.
Notice how Effie doesn't even try to start a round of applause this time, she loves them both and she can't bare to see them go into the games again, it breaks my heart every time. xx
I just realized the way effie exhaled Haymitch's name as tribute is like such a relief for her. Then a look of horror in her face when peeta volunteered. 😭
The sound of Prims voice when Katniss is being taken, breaks me every time! So sweet they still have a loving sister relationship even with everything that has happened to them. These characters will always live in our hearts
I‘ve wondered if Peeta’s name wasn’t in there, but pieces of paper said Haymitch. Because Peeta was obviously going to volunteer for Haymitch. And I think President Snow wanted to make sure it was both of them that went back into the games. He couldn’t take the risk of Haymitch volunteering for Peeta.
I don’t know. It’s possible. As long as he got Katniss, the symbol for the rebellion, he would be satisfied. If he gets Peeta too, even better. Peeta is definitely capable of being a leader/starter of rebellion
I like how Effie changed and became more humane throughout the series and we can clearly see that when she protests against Katniss and Peeta not saying goodbye to their families and them going back anyways
Having now seen songbirds and snakes: Could you imagine if the scene played out With katness's name being called,a moment of silence, Then you start hearing the soft strumming of a guitar , the crowd parts, and eighty something year old lucy gray Slowly makes her way to the stage while Singing a song that's absolutely roasting snow, Exposing extremely intimate and personal details about what they went through together, and the last line Is punctuated by her volunteering in katnesses place 😂
The way Effie sighs when she says Haymitch's name. I wonder if it was relief or fear. I wonder if she knew Peeta would volunteer for Haymitch, so she was like "Oh, no..." Or if she thought Haymitch was actually going to be the tribute, and was like "Oh, thank god... at least Peeta is safe." Either way, I love how you can interpret it either way. And it shows how much love she has for those three, and how far she has come from her first scene. This is actually one of my favourite scenes.
This scene is so devastating to me. You can see how absolutely wrecked Effie is. Even she can see how deeply unfair this all is, how crushing it is to see your champions forced back into these unjust games. And you can see it's killing her to have to announce these names.
Can we just appreciate the fact everyone's in something kinda formal (even Haymitch is wearing a blazer) then there's Peeta in jeans, jacket and top. Like he really doesn't give anything at this point 😂
That butterfly dress is truly something magical. It not only is a beautiful creation, but the choice to use it to reflect Effie’s growth is brilliant. Alexander McQueen is a wonder.
Effie hates her job. It shows so much on her face and in her voice when she says Katniss' name. So heartbreaking because she's such a sweet lady as well
As much as it would be cool to see Haymitch in the games, after what he went through, he doesn’t need to go back. That that he volunteered again shows how far in character he’s come from the first movie
I love what the movies did with Effie compared to the books, Effie has substantial character development here, understanding that this is wrong, showing her emotion trying not to cry. Even joining with district 13 towards the end. In the books she is almost robotic.
I like how you can tell that unlike last time, Effie clearly didn’t want to do this. She finally began to see what the hunger games is about. Death.

The reason they become icons is because their win was so famous and the Capitol yanking them back in showed everyone how cruel and unfair their rulers were
Plus Haymitch was the guy who’d played the long game and had all the contacts and whatnot…

The look on Peeta's face when he tells Haymitch, *"let go"* is dead-serious; he's not joking around, he's not uncertain -- he's fully committed to his course of action, which is protecting, and if at all possible, saving Katniss.
Well done, Josh Hutcherson!
Peeta is what all men should strive to be like!

2:02
The significance of Mrs.
Her husband also didn't die in the games, he died in a coal mine explosion
The fact that her mom was the first one to hold up her hand. After not being around emotionally in the last movie/book. It makes me tear up everytime.
Love how Effie is portrayed in this. When first introduced, she appeared very flamboyant and more concerned with her job.
This time, her appearance is still a bit flashy, but more modest and the pain she feels when pulling their names out is evident. Love how much she has changed since the beginning
Definitely. She has gained a sense of humanity and understanding of what it is like to have to go through the games.
@@einsteinboricua She was imprisoned in Mockingjay? I was certain she was free there, like the trio of stylists.

@@matt_canon It is a sigh of relieve, thinking that Haymitch will participate. You can see her surprise and schock when Peeta volunteers.

Effie's character development in both the books and movies, was amazing. Elizabeth Banks was perfect for this role.
@@itskore158 Thanks! =D

I love how Peeta didn’t hesitate or pause to volunteer. Shows how much he loves Katniss and doesn’t want her to die.
I read it on wiki
the book even mentions the capitol people being angry becoz the victors were celebs to them
She always knew...she simply had no choice but to put on her act. "Conceal, don't feel, don't let them know..."
I can't distinguish Effie's emotions when she said Haymitche's name. was she relieved or sad?
Jacek Mazur Both. Relieved as she likely didn't want both Katniss and Peeta to die but sad because that means Haymitch will instead. Perhaps the prevailing emotion in her voice right then was mainly relief-- the idea of losing both of the star-crossed lovers was probably on her mind, but not in a way that's selfish and ignored Haymitch. But she didn't expect Peeta to volunteer.
I think that She is sad and relieved. But I ship Hayffie sonI will say sad ahah

They should make another hunger games movie to when haymitch was in the hunger games and how he won
Luke Hogan he won by tricking the capitol just like peeta and katniss
why do you have a picture of jigsaw as your profile pic
Luke Hogan HELL yea

Aw I want to see Haymitch skill
Ikr!
Tuyet Ngoc In the book Catching Fire it shows some part of Haymitch's Games and it was cool because it was a Quarter Quell so there were double the tributes.
There's a reference in the first book as well, when Katniss asks Peeta how he thinks Haymitch won, and Peeta says "He must have outsmarted everybody."
"The female tribute from District Twelve... Katniss Everdeen." No shit, Sherlock.
Hannah R. If I was her I would have shouted “go fuck your self” in the mic
@@missthing4111 you would be taken hostage and you would be avox.
I feel a disturbance, as i puff on my pipe.
Lucy Gray Baird? ;)
It would have been funny if the paper said "your mom"
i’ve always loved this scene because to me it seems like the very first time Effie sees the horrors and terrible things the capital/President Snow is capable of. she never cares before but after the 74th games she really got to meet the kids and people that are affected. and this scene does a great job of showing her newly found resentment towards the capitol as well as her sadness and anger for the victors.
This scene really shows how much all them care for each other.
Aw Effie is sad 😢
The tribute from district 12- Haymitch Abernathy
Peeta:
I’m about to do what’s called a pro gamer move
I like how Effie changed and became more humane throughout the series and we can clearly see that when she protests against Katniss and Peeta not saying goodbye to their families and them going back anyways
Omg I litterally cried when i saw this
Effie was relieved when she read Haymitch name and then how sad she is when Peeta volunteered.
When one middle finger isn't enough
As tragic as this scene is, I can’t help but just appreciate the acting of Elizabeth Banks in this clip.
The way Effie sighs when she says Haymitch's name. I wonder if it was relief or fear.
I wonder if she knew Peeta would volunteer for Haymitch, so she was like "Oh, no..."
Or if she thought Haymitch was actually going to be the tribute, and was like "Oh, thank god... at least Peeta is safe."
Either way, I love how you can interpret it either way. And it shows how much love she has for those three, and how far she has come from her first scene. This is actually one of my favourite scenes.
Love how Peeta immediately volunteers!
The sadness on Effies’s expressions and her voice tone when she said Katnisse’s name and Peeta’s. It’s so so heartbreaking 💔
This scene is so devastating to me. You can see how absolutely wrecked Effie is. Even she can see how deeply unfair this all is, how crushing it is to see your champions forced back into these unjust games. And you can see it's killing her to have to announce these names.
Props to Elizabeth Banks for portraying Effie very well. She deserved an award for her portrayal.
i absolutely love the hunger games it leaves me with a feeling i can’t explain and i know i’m not the only one 💀
The actress of effie is just amazing. She portrays the emotions rawly
I love how PEETA stands by Katniss Everden in the movie
The background music sets this up perfect
0:39 Pause, omg her outfit and those butterflies in her hair, I wish everyone dressed like the capitol in today’s society.
So heartbreaking because she's such a sweet lady as well
Fun little detail. She's dressed in butterflies here, symbolizing her change and growth from the last time she preformed this duty.
As much as it would be cool to see Haymitch in the games, after what he went through, he doesn’t need to go back. That that he volunteered again shows how far in character he’s come from the first movie
yes!!!
The book is so different from the movie
Peter mallek was no reletive to hermich
effie’s butterfly dress to symbolize the transformation in her mindset about the games and the government she’s working for, utter genius
1:35 I know why Katniss looked shocked in this scene, because she knows Peeta's gonna volunteer for Haymitch, and right on cue he did.
Every time I see this salute, without fail, I sob
1:05 the way no one claps and katniss just stares into space. Makes you realize how unreasonable the whole Games are
The soundtrack still gives me chills
It would have been interesting to see haymitch in the arena instead of peeta
yes
This is the last time Peeta saw his entire family and most of his friends, and he didn't get to say goodbye :-(
I love what the movies did with Effie compared to the books, Effie has substantial character development here, understanding that this is wrong, showing her emotion trying not to cry. Even joining with district 13 towards the end. In the books she is almost robotic.
