JLaw shows the clever subtleties of performing right here. Also, little Willow who plays Prim adds brilliantly to the scene in the quiet stillness. Katniss would probably like nothing more than to cry at how unfair it is and the injustice, to be afraid for her sister, but her desperation to save Prim is overwhelmed by the strength she has to show for the Capitol. She mustn't let them refuse her volunteering!

The actress playing Prim is fantastic. No matter how many times I watch this scene, tears well up in my eyes when she starts shrieking "no!" as Gale carries her away. Great actress for her age at the time, I hope she has many more roles in her future
I love the absence of music throughout most of the scene. It adds a sense of realism and numbness that hits the viewers subconsciously. Then, only after Peeta begins making his way to the stage does an ominous and solemn soundtrack play faintly in the background. Not enough to ruin the overall silence, but just enough to begin moving past numbness and towards acceptance.

The way Primrose tucks her shirt in at 0:22 is such an excellent story detail... it subconsciously reminds us how young and small she is, her vulnerability, wearing hand me downs from her older sister.
Jennifer Lawrence’s laugh Is my everything I need Im sorry you feel that way. Judging by your name. You are a Jennifer Lawrence worshipper, good luck in life.
Jennifer made the scene. The cracking of her voice, her trying to get to her sister, even how she walked up to the stage in a trance like she fully didn't grasp what she had done to save her sister.... all of it. She did an excellent job of what anyone would do to save someone they loved.
I haven't seen the Hunger Games, but since the main character alive in the next film, using only my wits, and an inexplicable comprehension of agricultural science and engineering, I'm going to assume she lives.
NEVER forget that because of choosing and reading the female first, Peeta was picked. Effie was clearly influenced after Katniss volunteering. So you could never say it would have been Peeta and Prim instead. That would only work if his name was picked before Prim's name was read. It could have been Peeta's brother or even Gale. (Also do 18 year olds like Gale or Peeta's brothers do a little joy dance when they are not picked? Even if a 12 year old gets picked instead?)
A fact I do like is how Gale goes and grabs prim with no resistance from the guards. Highlights to me how the guards, while being ruthless and callous, understand the significance of a volunteer and the importance of the reaping
A good movie that tackles several deep issues: the value of human life in society; the relationship between rich and poor; double standards of our leaders; the issue of gender equality; the use of bread and circuses etc. I liked it a lot.
@@lucyw2470 that came from nowhere. xD It is MORE likely because people don't generally move between districts. There is no race mixing since people don't move.
The way District 12 cheered Katniss for volunteering for Hunger Games in Prim's place was with a three finger salute instead of excitement. None of the them were happy and instead sad and griefed.
As an older brother, this scene kinda hit hard. The stress and break in Katniss's voice and the overall concern and shock in her face when she first calls for Prim-- I'd die for my younger siblings
In the books. Katniss had put her name for food. Rations. Basically the more you put in the more your name has a chance to be picked as a tribute. She also did so, Prim didn't have to put her name in besides the 'one'. Very little chance of her ever getting picked to get sent into the games. As she would do what she can to protect her sister. Gale did the same with his own younger siblings....being from a large family. And of course....Prim's name ends up called....and Katniss basically heart shattered. The odds of her name getting picked....and she had so with the name Katniss on it.
I think Prim's performance is underrated here, such genuine, terrified screaming. Sends a chill down the spine. Impressive to find such a young actress that can show such powerful emotion!
The part the still haunts me is that prim only had one paper with her name inside the reaping ball while many kids (Katniss included) had several because they could trade food supply in exchange for adding their name to the ball more than once. Katniss had her name put in the ball 20 times because of this, and she made sure prim would never have to do it and she still got picked in her first year.
Jennifer Lawrence should have won 10 awards for this scene alone. The way she screams to volunteer makes me cry every single time. She was basically saying "No, I want to die instead" and she portrayed that desperate fear perfectly.
Let us not ever forget: when we are discussing our favorite parts of this movie, Suzanne Collins' overarching message was "This is what happens when your government gets too powerful."
@@stephaniemc9948 Of course, if the reasons for the takeover at the U.S. Capitol were valid, there would have been a little more support. Maybe among the 74 million Joe Biden voters! But when people seen at the Capitol are turned in by family members, that's bad. And their disregard for law enforcement, except when law enforcement treated the mob with kid gloves, as it was majority white people. All over the final certification in the process of the electoral college vote. As the method of selecting the president, it should be eliminated. But that's another issue.
@@stephaniemc9948 it's hilarious that you think the Capitol riot was "the people" taking back their power, when, in fact, it was because a powerful tyrant demanded his followers appease his ego. "The people" who attacked the Capitol were the sheep, not those who didn't. When a populace is so ignorant and easily manipulated by charming men and women, that's a crack in our democracy. Do not be so foolish as to believe it was anything but.
Maja Reinecke She prefers Prim. Katniss was rude towards her and basically despised her for “leaving” when her dad died (she had depression - and still does in the book - but depression isn’t widely known as a thing in the districts). Katniss has to supply everything for her family and hated her mother for forcing her and Prim to fend for themselves. Her mother much prefers Prim, and is probably more relieved that Prim has been saved. She’s upset for Katniss, but not as upset as she would’ve been for Prim.
I remembered asking my brother if he would volunteer for me because I'm no good in these situations and he was all, "NO!" Thanks, buddy. Then I asked my mom what I should do and she said, "Hide until the last minute, and then go ape shit crazy on the survivors." I could do that... Plus that one girl won when there was a massive flood and I can swim, so...
That's true you could be like that last girl in 4th place(I forgot her name) who would just run and hide while the other players killed each other. In fact if Peeta had died earlier and hadn't killed her I think she would of won.
+Imani_ sugar I think her name was Foxface. The cunning one who hid and was secretly stealing little bits of food from everyone. She died when Peeta picked nightlock berries thinking they were edible, and she stole the berries and was poisoned.
i was completely obsessed with the hunger games when i was a kid. it's been about 10 years since I've watched the movie but rewatching this scene is so much more emotional now that I'm an adult...
If Effie had picked any name but Prim’s, Katniss and Gale would have probably gotten together, Prim would still be alive, Peeta would have died horribly, the districts would still be slaves, and 23 more kids would have died in the 75th Quarter Quell + every year after. If Effie had picked any name but Peeta’s, there would be no revolution, Katniss would have either died or become the lone victor, Gale wouldn’t be on the fast track to the friendzone, Prim would still be alive, the 75th Quarter Quell wouldn’t have been past victors so Annie & Johanna wouldn’t have gotten tortured and Finnick would still be alive… The moment Prim’s name was called, so many fates were sealed, including hers. Crazy how just one tiny piece of paper changed the lives of everyone in Panem!
I always think it kind of cruel how all this eventually ended. Despite her central role in the whole revolution, the only goal Katniss ever had in mind is to keep her sister safe. It's ironically tragic that she should fail at that in the end.
When Katniss volunteers: Peta: "I can't believe I have to watch the girl I love die on TV. I don't know how this can get worse. I should have asked her out." Peta's name gets called: Peta: "Well damn. Now I'm going to have to kill her. Now I can't ask her out. Can I?" *Contemplates the awkwardness to worth it ratio*
Peeta has knife to Katniss’ throat “hey I had a crush on you back in middle school, would you have said yes if I asked you out? Katniss: ew, no *Peeta kills her*
Technically they had the rule that both tributes from the same district can win, they revoked that at the end of the games so only one of they was alive but then when they were gonna kill each other they reinstituted it
Shia Labeouf ✔ To my knowledge, they made the rule that both tributes can win towards the end, when Katniss was treating Peta’s wounds in the cave or whatever. But when they both became champions, they had no way of knowing that rule would get established. I’m assuming that because in Peta’s interview, he said he can’t be together with his crush even if he wins, because she got picked to be a champion as well. If the rule was established even at that point, the interviewer would have likely said something like “Let’s hope you both make it.” But instead said that it was definitely tragic. The rule was made for them, but then got revoked as you said, but they were going to kill themselves so it got reestablished so there wouldn’t be a game with no victor. I haven’t watched/read it in years tho so my memory may be off.
In the books it pointedly makes clear that what Katniss did in volunteering for Prim was a extraordinary first as even older siblings wouldn't volunteer for younger siblings. This why what Katniss did for Prim was so widely noticed and respected by the people of Panem. They wouldn't do it because they would be sacrificing themselves and the family would still lose a member. They didn't and wouldn't have the sense of responsibility for their sibling that Katniss had to take on for Prim after their fathers death. As bad as losing a sibling would be for them, it wouldn't be as crushing to them as it would have been for Katniss to lose the only person she loved in Prim.
Ugh this scene makes me cry immediately every time. JLaw is incredible here. I’m a big sister too and I would do the same thing. The desperation, the bravery, the selflessness... and then the numbness afterwards realizing what is going to happen to you now. But also knowing you wouldn’t change your decision. That you have no choice but to take her place. Unless you are a big sister, you’ll never understand the desperate need you feel to protect your younger siblings from harm. How it’s your responsibility... how you and your needs will always matter less.
older brother here we were adopted late so i have a very cold heart but i would do everything she did cause like you said; my wants & desires matter so much less in my eyes than the mfs i helped raise
breadstick soup tbh that’s probably the smartest thing to do except everyone in the districts most likely knew each other, especially considering district 12 has a small population. :/
It's how people deal with dark and heavy situations, with humor. It's how it's always been and how it always will be. Otherwise the sheer magnitude of the suffering of life will crush us.
Is no one going to discuss how their mother reacts to the whole situation. You can tell she's in so much pain, but she's so damaged she can't even cry or scream in horror. It's as if she has already lost them.

The way Primrose tucks her shirt in at 0:22 is such an excellent story detail... it subconsciously reminds us how young and small she is, her vulnerability, wearing hand me downs from her older sister.
Sorry, everyone has such deep insights of this scene... but at 1:48 who else saw the girl in the front row completely forget which hand it was! 😂😂😂

President Snow was doomed the moment Prim's name came out
Or more when kaitness volunteer for her sister
I just know he had a little stroke when Effie said, "Primrose Everdeen."

As an older brother, this scene kinda hit hard. The stress and break in Katniss's voice and the overall concern and shock in her face when she first calls for Prim-- I'd die for my younger siblings
you get it bro
id die rn it guaranteed my siblings success in life….i love those mfs so much
In the books.
1:00 me when I see my math grade

The part the still haunts me is that prim only had one paper with her name inside the reaping ball while many kids (Katniss included) had several because they could trade food supply in exchange for adding their name to the ball more than once. Katniss had her name put in the ball 20 times because of this, and she made sure prim would never have to do it and she still got picked in her first year.
Well isn't that a slap to her face metaphorically speaking.
When her voice cracks around 0:56, who can tell what emotion shes feeling, you know?
Jennifer Lawrence should have won 10 awards for this scene alone. The way she screams to volunteer makes me cry every single time. She was basically saying "No, I want to die instead" and she portrayed that desperate fear perfectly.
Jennifer Lawrence was BORN FOR THIS ROLE. She played Katniss with such grace and tenacity.
Let us not ever forget: when we are discussing our favorite parts of this movie, Suzanne Collins' overarching message was "This is what happens when your government gets too powerful."
Governments should be afraid of their people, not the other way around. That’s why I loved what happened Wednesday.
@@stephaniemc9948 you think democracy is the only government.
Bruh you comment this everywhere
@@stephaniemc9948 it's hilarious that you think the Capitol riot was "the people" taking back their power, when, in fact, it was because a powerful tyrant demanded his followers appease his ego. "The people" who attacked the Capitol were the sheep, not those who didn't. When a populace is so ignorant and easily manipulated by charming men and women, that's a crack in our democracy. Do not be so foolish as to believe it was anything but.
The mother does not look sad or scared. Strange.
It might be bad acting.
Its because ever since her husband died in a mining accident she has been just sorta lost.
that's how she is in the book. Leena Kahlon Maja Reineke
She's not sure what to think about that. She's happy about that Prim is saved but sad and scared about Katniss
I can't help but think that if, for some reason, Katniss didn't volunteer, Peeta would be kinda like a big brother to Prim 🥺
I think he would have tried to keep her alive until the end and then sacrificed himself to save her life
But that's never going to happen. Katniss loved Prim more than her life. Sad Prim died 💔

If Effie had picked any name but Prim’s, Katniss and Gale would have probably gotten together, Prim would still be alive, Peeta would have died horribly, the districts would still be slaves, and 23 more kids would have died in the 75th Quarter Quell + every year after.
If Effie had picked any name but Peeta’s, there would be no revolution, Katniss would have either died or become the lone victor, Gale wouldn’t be on the fast track to the friendzone, Prim would still be alive, the 75th Quarter Quell wouldn’t have been past victors so Annie & Johanna wouldn’t have gotten tortured and Finnick would still be alive…
The moment Prim’s name was called, so many fates were sealed, including hers. Crazy how just one tiny piece of paper changed the lives of everyone in Panem!
If you do the math, that’s 575 kids that would have died
Jennifer Lawrence’s acting in this gives me chills
This is such an emotional scene, and the actors are so talented!
I always think it kind of cruel how all this eventually ended. Despite her central role in the whole revolution, the only goal Katniss ever had in mind is to keep her sister safe. It's ironically tragic that she should fail at that in the end.
When Katniss volunteers:
Peta: "I can't believe I have to watch the girl I love die on TV. I don't know how this can get worse. I should have asked her out."
Peta's name gets called:
Peta: "Well damn. Now I'm going to have to kill her. Now I can't ask her out. Can I?"
*Contemplates the awkwardness to worth it ratio*
Peeta has knife to Katniss’ throat “hey I had a crush on you back in middle school, would you have said yes if I asked you out?
Katniss: ew, no

Bruuuhhh doesn't peeta have like 3 older brothers?😂
@Lianna Gorveatt one was old enough
One was 18 the other ones didn’t want to volunteer
Yeah but they all couldn't volunteer because of age

What you mean instantaneous. She waited like one minute after Prim name was called before volunteering

The way prim cries is heart wrenching. It’s so real that I forget they are acting. True sister love
Scene still gives me chills. One of the few instances where a movie captures emotion better than the book.
The other boys look so relieved when Peeta's name is called and not theirs.
If I was peeta when he was called I would have said hey there calling your name to the person next to me
there would be a debate about who is peeta and who is not and it turns out that peeta is Effie.
breadstick soup tbh that’s probably the smartest thing to do except everyone in the districts most likely knew each other, especially considering district 12 has a small population. :/
