Treated myself to this exact version of the new Speedy for my 50th birthday in 2021, and I'm still in love with it a year later. Considering selling lots of watches from my collection because they just don't get wrist time anymore with this beauty hardly ever getting put in the box.

I've owned the hesalite 2020 for over a month now, and I'm in love. Something about manually winding a watch every morning that just gets me. A space enthusiast myself, I was blessed that the wife got it for me - I wouldn't have wanted anything other than the hesalite version. When I do feel about missing out on seeing the movement in action, I watch a servicing video of someone breaking down a 321 or 861 movement in detail, and just appreciate what's on my wrist a little more, knowing how much complexity is packed within the 14mm of space of my watch case. Do wish that the lume markers degraded a little overtime so that they could patina a little, but I digress. The absence of an applied logo is a little bit of a bummer, but the chronograph second hand does well in keeping that area of the watch naturally obscure, so there's not much fuss there. The hesalite has scratched a little, and knowing that there's a premium price for this watch, it does feel weird. But hey, I'm going for authenticity here, and it just makes it mine in the long run - those are my scratches, my history i'm telling. Overall, I love this watch, and I look forward to getting a JB Forstner Komfit to really bring in the authenticity factor. You should definitely look into getting one for your collection. LunarReplicas.com also carries them, and the same spec'd out velcro strap from the Apollo era.

Fellow Hesalite owner here, I highly recommend either PolyWatch or Meguiar’s Plast-X paired with a microfiber cloth to remove the scratches in your Hesalite. Works like a charm and always buffs up the Hesalite to look new 👍🏽

Polywatch is so easy to use with perfect results. You can also purchase original Omega display back from Swiss Limited Editions ,including the extra parts needed. A bit expensive , but you then have the best of both ..hesalite and clear caseback..all original Omega parts.
Also, if you miss having a date on your Speedy, I use my sweep hand as date....just change each morning when I wind it. Enjoy.

Speedy is probably my favorite watch but the current pricing situation is getting rather annoying. Just 2 years ago you could easily get a brand new one for 4k. After the latedt price increase it will cost you 6k plus a ridiculous maintenance cost of 850 for servicing. This is not what the speedy used to represent in the watch market.

After actually witnessing Neil Armstrong step onto the surface of the moon on TV in July 1969, I've been a lifelong devotee of the Speedmaster Professional. I've only just recently bought my own, and it is the new 3861 with Heselite and solid case back. I did not consider the sapphire sandwich version a "real" moon watch, but more an homage. To me, Heselite was specifically chosen for the job back then and the way it plays with light distortions and shows its age and personality over time is way more valuable to me than durability for durability's sake. I'm so proud of my new purchase and plan to take it to the grave.

Interesting question at the end about going with the hesalite crystal or not. Personally, I care more about seeing the movement than going with a hesalite crystal, so I’d absolutely go with the sapphire sandwich. I agree Omega should’ve offered an option for a sapphire back on the hesalite.

I just got my SS on bracelet on 10.7.23 and I am very pleased with it. I have wanted a "Moonwatch" since the 70's and it looks like my timing is excellent. The 3861 with all its technical / mechanical advancements is amazing. The new 5 link melt on your wrist bracelet with the recently introduced on the fly micro length adjustment. The new stepped dial, lume, domed hands, dot over 90, etc... is close to perfection. I chose the SS because of the durability and the open case back. I love to look at the movement. I am very pleased. It set me back USD 8,000 and is a tremendous value. Oh, yeah did I say it is beautiful. A classy, humble beautiful.

My Hesalyte came from my wife on our 40th and as a child of the space age it can only be passed to a descendant. I have a significant collection but this watch stands alone. In a thousand years our descendants will be able to walk into a museum, such as Science & Industry in Chicago, hold up their wrists, and compare theirs with Jim Lovell’s scratched Hesalyte.

A few years ago I also had the chance to try on a 16570 with a tritium dial... was going for a very reasonable price at the time and the seller would negotiate even further. I passed that up because it was a little too scratched up (but 1 owner never polished) and I was (at the time) seeking a white dial, this was the black. I'm surely am kicking myself for passing it up. Big time. I will never part with this Speedmaster though.

I was fortunate to pick up a like-new pre-owned sapphire sandwich for not much more than the hesalite. I’ve always been a purist but…if I’m honest I prefer the ease and clarity of sapphire. I’d like a solid caseback but I find the text on the current models is too extreme, so the open caseback is a bit more subtle with the marketing. Lastly, the sapphire is thinner (slightly). I love the watch, and I could easily see myself paring the collection down to a speedy and an SKX.

I've had the Saphire Sandwich for two months. My reasoning for this model was that since I was buying it new, I would get the latest iteration. The bracelet is beautiful and wears well although my 7.25" wrist tends to grow and shrink with the temp/humidity so does not always fit correctly. The micro adjustment is not enough to compensate for it.

When it comes to chronographs, if you are really into chronograph movements, the greatest innovation is of course the Seiko QUARTZ 7-t-92 movement. No other movement be it a mechanical, meca-aquartz, or just pure quartz comes even closer to its level of sophistication and capabilities in every category. It has a 12 hours/60 totalizer which gives it a 12 chronograph capability. It has a built in flyback as it the minutes hand of the chronograph can catch up after stopping to register the split time. Al it takes is to push the A pusher and then just push and re-push the B button all the way through the duration of the event. Such chronograph can cost up to US$150 and you get a 100 meter water resistance gratis. World War II fast low flying fighter pilots could have only dreamed about having such a chronograph for their dead-reckoning low flying sorties in the European theater of war. The Speedmaster is just a basic racing watch that was chosen by NASA because it had met their standards of a government tender, no more no less. However, one cannot argue with feelings and blind loyalty to a brand. After all, a chronograph is and remains just a tool watch.

I regrettably sold my first speedy, which is very cool, and I wish I could have it back. It was a chocolate dial sapphire sandwich. I've tried to track it down, but the guy I sold it to sold it off to someone else, and there it goes... Anyways, I now have a 1861 speedy pro that I bought brand new a few years later, and I absolutely love it. As beautiful as the sapphire is, I really don't mind the hesalite getting scratched up a bit. It feels more vintage and pure this way, and I love how it looks. I actually do like the big chunky bracelet that it came with, but I just can't get it to fit right, so I have a few after market bracelets that I wear it on, and they all make me smile. Speedmaster is very nice, but there are far too many models. Should simplify the lineup. Personally (and that is just me) would much prefer the steel bracelet over leather strap or NATO strap. The bracelet would typically last the life of the the watch itself while a leather or fabric strap would need to be replaced periodically. Also those straps cheapens the look of the watch. As far as comfort is concerned, for the steel bracelet, over time with natural stretch, it would get more and more comfortable on the wrist, just like a pair of old-style denims.

A little hack: Buy an aftermarket bracelet for the old ref and enjoy it as if it were the new and much more expensive Speedy. Forstner and Uncle Straps both do one. I know there are other differences, but the wearability and basic aestethics will be covered.
I have done it and I don’t want the new one more.

it is a manual winding watch and has only 50 hours? it should have been at least 70 hours for a reasonable winding frequency. I know people selling their watches for the short power reserve..

Got the former model just before this one was realised and prefer it. The new bracelet looks great, but it tapers to much an looks silly on a big guy like I am.

I still haven’t had the chance to try one on yet, with an 8in wrist my concern is the speedmaster looking too small.

I couldn’t justify spending ca. 6500 EUR for a watch with plastic glass which will scratch up…no thanks, that’s why I went 3861 Sapphire Sandwich. The cost of the watch unfortunately has moved it out of tool watch territory

Coaxial is a fantastic innovation and kudos to dr Daniels, BUT a moonwatch should be in the family of movements 321->861->1861 . Coaxial is not a direct evolution. They should have called it something else... I have an 1861 and will never buy the new one.
    Also...is the 3861 space qualified...?

Own an 861 or 1861/3 for the excellent Lemania movement. Add a 3861/3 to your collection for co-ax. Win.

To be accurate, the 1861 has never been qualified by NASA. Omega uses the same testing framework, but a Speedy hasn’t been tortured by NASA since the 70s and the 861 movement. So, if we’re pedigree nitpicking, you have to buy pre-1997 if you want that true authenticity sauce.

I hate the telemetric scale, I dislike the “drop shape” second hand, I hate the granular of the dial, I hate the black color of the dial in comparison to the previous versions. Omega ceased to be my “grail brand”. Also I hate these 500€ price increase every 6 months. I swapped back to Rolex. And I’m there for good. No more omega for me and their (swatch group) crap politics. Bye

I'm REALLY really torn... I don't yet have a luxury watch. As of right now I have a black/black Submariner due in around Dec 2023 this year. But I work in the space program so the Moonwatch (sapphire sandwich) is VERY appealing. But I do want something to wear all the time... hot tub, shower, pool, whatever... so perhaps I should change to a Polar Explorer II plus the Moonwatch (like mentioned in this video)...
Ideally I'd have the Moonwatch and a panda Daytona but the AD pretty much laughed at me yesterday hahahah.
