And finally a Speedmaster Professional that can be hacked to accurately set the seconds hand. It's been long overdue. On my first generation Speedmaster "Sapphire Sandwich" setting the time, using even very slight back pressure on the crown was always something I wished that I didn't have to do.
I’m so glad I got mine before the £1000 price increase. Thanks for the video. And yes I think monochrome is perfect. I wouldn’t want any colour on the dial. I’ve had mine
I've always felt like the watch would be a tad large for my wrist. When the Omega X Swatch collab happened it got me thinking overtime about a Speedmaster again! Just purchased one on eBay, and specifically chose one with a tritium dial with lovely patina'd indices. So much for crisp white on black!! I used to roll my eyes at buying the same watch everyone else seems to buy, like a Reverso or a Speedy. I now own both! Haha
Haha they are classics for a reason! I’ll definitely own a speedy someday and maybe a nicely patina’d vintage would be the way to go but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there. Hope you love yours!
Oh, in certain places it's Rolex that's too much...seems like every other person you bump into is wearing a rolex and they're the showy in your face types of characters 😦
That's a good review - it covered most of the useful angles to cover, and was fair and balanced and considered. I don't agree with every individual comment, but I do agree with most of it. Interesting you mention still maybe getting one, but having lots of others you'd put ahead of it. I just bought one as my 9th watch, after various less obvious or more high end choices. But in the end the lure of the Speedy was enough (even though I already had Racing version; a gift that started the obsession) to draw me in and make open my wallet.
@@IAmTheHound thank you! Appreciate you watching. I’m surprised you felt the need to get the normal speedy after having a racing version already. It is a very classic watch. Surprisingly owning a moonswatch has gotten rid of most of my feeling for needing this. I’m not a big chronograph or complications guy so I enjoy the Moonswatch for its fun aesthetic more than its “luxurious build.”
Your reviews are always so professionally done and the work you put in is definitely appreciated by everyone. I've always been on the fence about the speedmaster. It's a legend in itself, but yet again, it's one of the most flipped watches ever, and I question if people ever love it enough to keep it forever.
Thank you I appreciate it! I know I’ll have one one day but I’m in no rush. Honestly the new speedmaster swatch collaboration is far more interesting to me.
Fantastic piece. My favourite is a 1967 145.012 premoon 321 on 1450 bracelet, currently out for full service. To me, it is part of that era on my wrist, so it had to be 1960s production. Also a 1969 861 on wrist. Ultimate would be the very first one with metallic bezel and broad arrow hands, but it would need to be an original, not a re-edition.
I like these a lot but prefer the 1861 version because: - price. Mine was £3750 compared to £6600 - prefer more authentic old movement. And i like that its non hacking - the dial. More grey, less busy , the outer track blends into one solid band instead of having less marks and looking more prominent and busy as a result - lug design. I find it prettier - chrono hand and pyramid writing just look nicer All of these are obviously just personal taste I do like that the new ones are a little slimmer... but i wear mine on leather straps anyway, so my 1861 wears beautifully The Speedy in any configuration is just a great watch
I agree with almost everything. I especially agree that the dial is too plain. It took me a while to accept, but I really just like shiny things. Case in point: most Speedmaster variants like those with sunburst blue and moonphase - they are visually quite arresting. The one thing I disagree with is on value. Speedmasters have just about the best chronograph movement available - they are known for being extremely reliable. Not something we can say for most chronographs. I would say the design hasn't been commodified either. Certainly it's quite simple, but the turned lugs are an Omega staple you'd be hard pressed to find elsewhere. I'm less hot on the phallic dial but that's just me... One more thing I'd add, it's one of the very few chronographs which are genuinely easy to read. Both for the time and chronograph functions. I would say my other top 2 chronographs are the Longines Big Eye and Straton Curve (but note I'm a sucker for the colour orange).
Best watch ever!!!! I really wish the new 3816 had the 1861 matte black/dark grey smooth texture dial. Also offer a hesalite, sapphire case back option. That would be the perfect 3861 Speedy. As an owner of a 1861 it’s very difficult to decide to get a new 3861. Both look and wear very similar. People will only notice the difference on a close up macro level. Unfortunately the 3861 sapphire movement is not as refined as the 1836 sapphire movement.
Pretty timely review with the new Omega/Swatch collab reveal today. Nice to see a closer look at this classic since I've never handled one myself. Will you keep it in your collection? You should an SOTC video btw! Cheers.
A happy accident for sure and quite honestly I would prefer one of those swatch collabs so much more! I will have a SOTC video coming soon. Just got delayed from a qc issue with a sartory billard I ordered.
Wow a couple of reviews today, nice. I tired the new Speedy on at the AD, I loved it. Just too big for my wrist but I think I could make it work if I really wanted. But if someone did want to test the waters for about $260, Omega did just do a collaboration with Swatch and they made 9 or 10 different colored Swatchmasters or Spatches, Spatch? Basically look almost identical to the Speedy and the same 42mm case. Speedmaster dong, I always thought that too haha.
I really wish I could get one of those speedmaster swatches! I know they are only available from certain official swatch stores and I doubt it’ll be a standard production piece. We’ll see if I get lucky!
Haha Unfortunately this one wasn’t mine. Just on loan from a friend and although I do want a speedy, I think other things are in the more immediate pipeline
Nope just standard from the boutique. I know there are versions which have brushed bracelets and others which have brushed with polished links. That could be the a difference
Really just depends. Obviously you already have a GS so don’t necessarily need another. Tudor I think makes some fantastic watches. I’d buy a Pelagos or black bay 58 before this personally. Maybe go custom and make something from Sartory Billard. Lots of fun options.
@@theknightswatch I got the black bay 58 and love it! Fits great, slim, not too big, keeps time well too which bugs me when they don't. No date tho but I'm getting used to that. I'll check out Sartory Billard!
You might be the first person to suggest they need more variations on the Speedy. I’d never buy one for the reasons you pointed out. Just a bit dull. I know we are all “supposed “ to own one at some point. Would I consider one of the 57s? For sure, but even then I’d probably go Zenith. Great review as always Xavier
@@michaelfierman3256 I want the dark and light blue ones(if only the pink had a pink or better white dial!) hope it’s not a limited edition since there aren’t any swatch boutiques near me.
I have both and love both. Problem with zenith is it's more fragile. It needs regularly servicing bec of the fast beat movement. But the el primero is really nice movement. Just a pain to maintain though. Omega they just keep on going. Best regards
Any grand Seiko, even Christopher wards I would probably get first, the moonswatch quite frankly, maybe ming, maybe Sartory Billard, maybe other microbrands. Honestly not a big chronograph guy either
One of the worst Speedmaster reviews. The guy is guessing on details between the last version and the new version. He then suggests the watch should have new pretty colors. Do you feel the same about a Sub? “Boy I wish it came in orange like a Doxa.” Bad and poorly informed review. Stick to watches you actually know.
Thanks I try my best to make the worst 🙏🏻 and I do agree the sub is boring in just black. Just because it’s classic doesn’t mean that should be the only choice.

I went to Omega to see this watch, its trash. you have to spend $20k for a nice-looking Speed master. Also, the people working at Omega are good people.
Best watch in the world. And one of the most iconic. This is the perfect one watch collection. Nothing is more versatile.
The watch design is perfection and is now the well deserved classic it is

Now we have Speedmaster with white dial, and green dial in the Moonshine gold version
I know “iconic” is overused in the watch world, but for this watch, it’s totally accurate.
