unfortunately, highway interchanges where the oncoming traffic meets the exiting traffic in the same lane is a common occurrence east of the Mississippi. They are the worst interchanges and cause huge traffic jambs during rush hour. I have to say, I do like micro managing my lanes with TM:PE. It's the only way that I can make the traffic behave reasonably realisticly going around roundabouts. What I try and do is draw in the lane connections that would match the line markings on a real roundabout. This means that you tend to shuffle the lanes across after an exit, which allows all lanes to get to where they need to go. It's a thing of wonder when it works.
I had the greatest idea of all times when I decided to fix cities myself. It's shocking the cataclysmic cities that are sent to the workshop to be fixed. Some of them have so many mods in the save files that cannot be fixed while others take a good amount of time but the vast majority of them usually have the same problems: roundabouts badly set, lack of main roads to ease the traffic through and out of the city and too much industry, causing hundreds of trucks to run clogging up the city.
That's an interesting city to look at. Lots of shapes and forms. It's honestly amazing how most of the problems with traffic will go away if you have properly set up roundabouts and do your lane math. Allow nodes for lane changes is probably a good 3rd tip.
Well get on it, create a scale model with realistic traffic densities of your problem area and let Biffa at it, then all you'll have to do is get your local government to approve all the mulligans :x
I’m impressed. Dude got his city to 211,000 with 76% traffic flow. Of course that was with easy mode. Some people can’t use mods tho like me, I game on PlayStation. So I’m forced to use road hierarchy and lane mathematics much more than I’d probably need to since I can’t just go and select which lane I want cars to merge in to. The two lane highway from the Mass Transit dlc tho has been my saving grace. I cannot tell you how many inner city highway interchanges have saved my butt. For instance if someone was playing on PC and saw that their 4 way arterial road intersection was backing up traffic, would either use a roundabout or change up the lanes so traffic turned and flowed more smoothly instead of clashing with one another while turning. I unfortunately don’t have that luxury lol
Thanks for getting back to some Fix Your City videos! These are why I first started watching your channel. There's something very satisfying about watching chaos being redirected.
24:39 - that roundabout intersection needs to just bloody go. They already have that hugely overbuilt spaghetti junction that can handle every bit of the traffic that's being thrown at it and would *obviously* serve everything the roundabout junction serves, but everything on the highway is all getting jammed up because the AI thinks that some of the cars would have a shorter route on the roundabout half of the intersection. Get rid of the roundabout one entirely and let the city infrastructure handle the traffic that desperately needs to get to wherever the roundabout leads. If it's *really* that important to have both of those parallel collector/arterial-wannabe roads connected to the highway, then get rid of both the spaghetti junction AND the roundabout junction and build it all into one huge metropolitan intersection. Two lanes in either direction that just cut past everything. Two lanes in either direction that split off and run parallel, and service the two interchanges, and then rejoin the fly-past lanes on either end. The two intersections can never, ever, be made to work as one. Get rid of one, or make them both into one. There's nothing else that can be done here.
The roundabout is one of the only connections in that area, on and off the highway, and the Spaghetti connects two highways together, so they are both serving completely different tasks. I think the simplest solution is to merge those two spaghetti on ramps together and then connect them further back, that way there is more space between them. And maybe even some smaller quick on or off ramps from the other highway into that area, so as to reduce the amount of cars needing to change highways just to use that one roundabout off ramp.
I just know whoever sent in this city isn't a regular viewer of biffa 😂 I mean, houses inside a roundabout, no lane mathematics, wiggly roundabouts (obviously they weren't fixed with the cross-trick) and so on 😂😂 at the end of the video, there was even an industrial district inside a roundabout 😱😂
@@thelastpanda5934 it started its trend in an older Fix Your City episode, kinda funny still other than the times biffa forgot to brace the roundabout.
To be fair, in the town I live in there's a roundabout (maybe technically a traffic circle since it's got traffic lights) with a few businesses and a restaurant in the middle of it. However, all of that is built off an internal one-way road. There's also one small retail park and a multi-story car park connected to the same roundabout to add to the fun. So it's got 4 exits for major roads, 2 exits for retail/parking, another exit for a very small road, and one exit/entrance going through the middle of the roundabout (I think that's 8 in total). It's also not uncommon to have a roundabout with a pub in the middle of it, despite that seeming to be a very bad idea.
When interchanges are too close together, you have to separate the on-ramp from the off-ramp by putting one atop the other via a bridge/tunnel. Then make a ramp connecting the on-ramp before the grade separation to the off-ramp after the separation, to handle the few vehicles that want to exit immediately after entering. That eliminates the conflicts between the two streams of traffic.
Great job with the city fix Biffa. Following your advises I now play with despawning permanently turned off, and rock a whopping 85%-89% on my current city of Rockwood. 👍

So when everything was said and done at the end did you have it for only 4 hours? or you let it run making tweaks over the course of 14 hours. would be a cool stat I feel like if possible.
Love to see this series is back, it thought me so much about traffic and city managing in general, also this city is just amazing, really a work of art, and at 27:00 just a big roundabout should work miracles as a replacement of the whole junction

What I'd love are some broader road fixing videos where you do more... significant... changes to these cities to fix their traffic problems as well as make them more... aesthetically pleasing.
i definitely feel for players who are struggling with their traffic management. traffic management can be quite tricky in this game if you don't fully know how the cars work, and it really requires a lot of trial-and-error and picking through your whole network with a fine comb. these series are great because they teach you some of the basic behaviour of car AI, and learning how to remove redundancies and to make sure your cars are actually able to get to where they want to go. not to mention how, with good use of public transport and walkability, you can eliminate a huge chunk of residential traffic out of your roads. it's definitely the industrial traffic that really bottlenecks your whole infrastructure, once you figure out how to deal with that then the rest of the traffic is a lot easier.

How I have missed seeing your traffic fix videos, and this one, on such a large and packed city, was epic!! I enjoy all your videos, but seeing a traffic fix allows me to see another player's creativity. More please.
I enjoy the Fix Your City series, BUT. I enjoy it much more when its a beautiful city, where the player has done everything they can to fix the traffic already. Then I'm able to learn more from what you do to fix it.
Hahaha "i got a sneaky feeling that you're Dutch" :D Those line names are funny. 'Trein pijn' literaly translates as 'train pain'. The struggle was real.
I love the traffic fix videos. That's how I started watching Biffa vids and now I'm hooked on his city builds aswell. Always looking forward to your content! Always enjoyable
It's quite mind boggling how just rearranging the traffic management can increase profit, fix service issues and grow your population. Then again I remember IRL gridlocks and just how much time is wasted commuting. Pretty darn accurate lol
I know these videos prob take ages to make so i understand they don't happen too often, but I really missed the traffic fixes. they are sooo satisfying to watch
A thought I had while watching this was doing another father/son episode, but instead of destroying the city, Biffa Jr. fixes one (and destroys the traffic).
I can understand why the city got as bad as it did. The former "Mayor" of the city apparently read the US guide to infrastructure, which boils down to "Throw more lanes at the problem" That's fine if you have a two-lane road that's finding itself acting as a main road. However, if you're getting to the point where you need your highways to have 6 lanes? That's another problem entirely. In this game, there are no good reasons to not have any mass transit. The only real reason would be if you don't have the cash. If you don't want any different looking roads? Busses. If Busses are too low capacity? Trams. If the trams are too difficult because they need one continuous loop/ your traffic is so poor that Trams take too much space? Monorail. I could do this forever, because there are so many different types of mass transit.
hrm, 18:00 is the most replayed spot, I wonder if it's because of everyone yelling at their screen that the left bypass is going in the wrong direction lol :P Fantastic job fixing the traffic without changing the road layout!
I'm seeing a lot of "oh, this traffic route isn't getting to this spot because of this jammed interchange, let's throw in a slip lane..." which reminds me of the greater Los Angeles area. They're actually updating the highway in my area so we're not using dangerous full cloverleaf interchanges, so there's some progress.
Biffa, seriously, we need your expertise in real life. Please come to all the big cities, where politicians are like "one more lane will fix it" and fix the traffic! It is always so entertaining to watch you take on these completely gridlocked cities and flipping them around.
Pro tip: If you aren't 10000% sure that you built an intersection correctly, you can always take the bus line tool and test that from every direction all 3 movements (or 4 with U-turns) are possible. This copy pasted custom interchanges is just horrible. One left turn direction is missing (at 5:30 the one from the left to the top), and 1 right turn ramp is looping all the way around the intersection for some reason (at 5:30, the one from the bottom to the right). I'm surprised Biffa was able to fix the city without ripping them all out. (And I'm not even talking about how I don't like that there's no rime or reason to where the lanes split of and connect, that happens in real interchanges. Then again, with knots it's an advantage if it's easy to see that they are tied correctly.) I'd always suggest downloading intersections from the workshop. They'll be more realistic, they'll look more professional, they are often smaller than what the average player can build, but most importantly they have a much higher chance of working properly.
There's a reason why Biffa's traffic fixes all start the same way. Applying lane mathematics and doing the auto-setup on roundabouts is so easy that everyone can do it and it literally can't make your traffic worse. The only other strategy that has an equally guaranteed benefit is to take a zoomed out look at your city to make sure that vehicles can cross highways and rivers without going through an interchange. I'm always surprised when people send in a city to be fixed that has no lane mathematics on one hand but on the other hand 6 lane roads and lane connectors in several random places.
@Biffa , hey dude, my face lit up when i seen the biffa fixes your city icon. as much as the fixes were mostly the same, this is what i joined the channel for. thanks for goin back to this
I've missed these, nice to see them back. It would also be cool if you had a series where you highlighted really good cities and why you think they are, maybe as shorter video's picking on particular highlights
When you upgrade the roundabouts with the slip lanes to highway they will not use the slip lanes anymore as the highway is "faster" and the sliplanes looses their point
I think you should load up some of your old traffic fix videos, record yourself watching them and then redo the fixes on the original save file and compare the differences. Just to see how much you've changed, and to spot some of your mistakes (there's not many but you do have a couple "oops" moments).

How I have missed seeing your traffic fix videos, and this one, on such a large and packed city, was epic!! I enjoy all your videos, but seeing a traffic fix allows me to see another player's creativity. More please.
I wish he could come fix my city’s traffic 😅
I enjoy the Fix Your City series, BUT.
I enjoy it much more when its a beautiful city, where the player has done everything they can to fix the traffic already. Then I'm able to learn more from what you do to fix it.
Biffa, as soon as you upload, I watch and like the video immediately. 👍 Btw let's go Fix your city is back!! 😯
Thankyou and enjoy 😁👍
Same! Biffa's content never get's old ☺
you can just use a bypass lane for people going directly from entrens to exit with entering on to the hiway with nodes close together.
Can we download the pre-fix save game file from somewhere? Good to see a new entry in the series!
This goes to show that car-dependency out of control negatively affects traffic in cities as well! Nice video.
It’s been a while, nice to see a city fix. These are my favorite! Thanks Biffa!
Industrial area inside a roundabout? Twitch, twitch. Epic fix, mate. Masterclass.
It's quite mind boggling how just rearranging the traffic management can increase profit, fix service issues and grow your population. Then again I remember IRL gridlocks and just how much time is wasted commuting.
Pretty darn accurate lol
Good job on showing how to not overuse the lane tool. I see a lot of people funelling traffic not letting vehicles change lanes
I know these videos prob take ages to make so i understand they don't happen too often, but I really missed the traffic fixes. they are sooo satisfying to watch
Traffic got better once all of the buildings were abandoned. Silver linings. Swings & Roundabouts.
A thought I had while watching this was doing another father/son episode, but instead of destroying the city, Biffa Jr. fixes one (and destroys the traffic).
Good to see the fix your city serie back!
10:25 I feel figuring out the "spaghetti" junctions and roads should be figured out first to see which ones can be eliminated first
I admire your patience and attempting to fix these. I'd probably just nuke most of these interchanges and start from scratch 😬
I can understand why the city got as bad as it did. The former "Mayor" of the city apparently read the US guide to infrastructure, which boils down to "Throw more lanes at the problem"
That's fine if you have a two-lane road that's finding itself acting as a main road.
AHHHHHHH FIX YOUR CITY IS BACK!! I’ve never been so excited over a you tube video before!!!!!
Don’t forget to like the video!
hrm, 18:00 is the most replayed spot, I wonder if it's because of everyone yelling at their screen that the left bypass is going in the wrong direction lol :P
Fantastic job fixing the traffic without changing the road layout!
Missed the fix your cities videos. They’re what made me love the game
nice to see your comming back to fixing Citys.
My suggestion for the "Bläch" junktion to replace them whit a turbininterchange or something like that.
Ah the traffic fix videos. Biffa making me feel all nostalgic 🥰
Awesome, I love fix your city.
Yoooooo, a new City Fix! Nice.
Btw, the metro lines menu tells you how many lines there are, you didn't need to count them.
I love these traffic fix videos and this city looked amazing. Is there a way to get our hands on these maps ourselves as well?
Then again, with knots it's an advantage if it's easy to see that they are tied correctly.)
I'd always suggest downloading intersections from the workshop.
I love this city it's like an urban jungle that you think would be deserted and destroyed!
I'm really surprised at the minimal amount of redesigning of junctions you had to do to get this city fix.
It's baaaaaack! Yes!
Enjoy 👍
Excellent fixing! Best I've seen from you in a while, and I watched quite a lot on your channel! Awesome job, and video as usual!
When you upgrade the roundabouts with the slip lanes to highway they will not use the slip lanes anymore as the highway is "faster" and the sliplanes looses their point
What a lovely city & I will watch traffic fixes all day long!
I love your other videos Biffa, but Fix Your City episodes are my very favorite. And what a fix this one was!
Fix Your City is what got me onto your channel a few years back. Glad to see it return! 😎
I think you should load up some of your old traffic fix videos, record yourself watching them and then redo the fixes on the original save file and compare the differences. Just to see how much you've changed, and to spot some of your mistakes (there's not many but you do have a couple "oops" moments).
