That last turn was absolutely insane. Wow. I didn't think he could pull it off at first.
Thanks for saying he so you didn’t spoil
Thank you for not spoiling! 💕
Very well written to avoid spoilers
And yeah that last turn was fucking insane
There was a part of me where I was hoping DJ would just back out of his deal in response to the last two damage coming at him and flinging 3 million soldiers at Jimmy.
@@MrBunBuns1496 You're welcome.
Before watching the actual episode: "Only one may Sand!" Well played, DJ!
Right? I just noticed this.
This extra turn is special, because we're playing old commanders.
*not playing commanders, instead just combo with enchantments*
And not very old commanders either.
@@matthugenberg8869 Shu Yun came out in 2015, it's 7 years old. But even then, holy shit this made me feel old
Yeah, made me yawn.
Yeah, that was a disappointment. Letting DJ alive was a pretty bad move …
@@matthugenberg8869 Still not that old and barely used them
I love how 3/4 of the commanders didn't even get played.
Because they basically made "good stuff" piles that didnt need commanders and is boring/lazy deck building
@@thew1ldcard886 I’ll leave “boring” alone because that’s subjective but lazy? Every deck clearly had a theme/style that was followed (Craig’s deck was closest to good stuff). You’re clearly biased towards “battleship” EDH where the deck doesn’t function as well without the commander which is objectively poor deck design. DJ simply had a GOD start, and Jimmy didn’t allow Vinny to take DJ out. Thus, nobody but Jimmy and DJ got to show off their deck.
@@SergeantBrowning No i dont care for battle crusier magic either. What i mean by lazy is that shoving every staple and good card into a deck that has nothing to do with the commander is lazy.
@@thew1ldcard886 u gonna cry?
@@moritzbierdimpfl7233 When someone has no real arguement
That was fun. Props to DJ keeping his word with game in hand.
Man of his word, great show!
Only true magic the gathering players do this.
Its weird that he didnt put an fail save to its request like doing an agressive move against me. Or until we are the last one standing.
I DO wish he had sacced 37 of his soldiers to ping Jimmy, but I do guess that would have violated the treaty.
No matter how much mana you have or cards in hand you have you can never get back your credibility from breaking a deal.
Jimmy: "DJ is a problem, I don't have an answer for it." Table: "ok we figured it out we can get rid of DJ". Jimmy: "ok, but how about not for no particular reason?"
The particular reason is they were playing a game with their friends and didn't want one out so quickly! I respect it!
@@Orionhart sure I get it, I'm all for playing suboptimally with friends for the lulz, just gonna point it out and rag on Jimmy when it happens tho cuz that's also fun lol
@@MattTorres was it suboptimal it made him win
God bless players like Jimmy who embrace chaos because at the end of the day.. the game is not any less fun for risking a loss. heck who knows. Jimmy might have not been able to kill the vinny and craig without DJ's goblin bombardment play
@@ryanthelion2584 seems to me like he probably would have won either way. But I guess we'll never know for sure.
"There are a lot of attacking decks out here, so I'm gonna go for Propaganda. It seems a little unfair."
*Immediately then pulls out a Ghostly Prison*
EDH players be like:
Why didn't he target Survival with his last trigger that turn??
that made laugh and i would have called him out on that one :D
and of note, only 2 decks really had attackers as plan A
It's good to see Jimmy in extra turns it's always fun to see more of the og crew playing magic and giving that nostalgic feel of the og episodes
was just watching some older episodes, happy to see Mr Infect back
Craig is my favorite. As a fellow Phyrexian I'm always happy to see poison shenanigans
Absolutely. All hail phyrexia!
Really hoping more poison happens in the upcoming sets
No creature deck with G in it is complete without Triumph Of The Hordes!
Same here Craig is one of my favorite Knights. His decks always seem to go from 0-100 in the blink of an eye. I legit thought he had it wrapped up with that Ermakul play
@@faerie7dragon I mean Green is so powerful now, I'm not even sure it needs it
It’s so cool to see the old faces back and playing some old school commanders that I’ve never seen anyone play. Nice 👍
They literally didn’t play 3 of the commanders, so you still haven’t seen anyone play them
@@davidgill9463 that is true 😂
I mean, considering I've only seen the into and that Craig is playing a Sultai deck, I'm gonna guess he's gonna be playing the same deck he always plays ;-)
Jimmy: can you take out DJ? ok cool
Also Jimmy: YA KNOW, ACTUALLY....
Yeah, not gonna lie, this actually pissed me off, I have been in the same scenario as Vinny contributing to answer a threat/remove someone (especially when Jimmy himself pointed that out and even offered removal... instead of helping they then turn and screw you! I mean, Vinny indeed KNEW Jimmy had removal, but he went all in cause Jimmy presented an offer (even if it wasn't a formal deal). Anyway, this is to me in the douche move territory. You can considering him outplaying Vinny vs obvious misleading. Legal in the game of course, but I for one wouldn't make a deal with Jimmy if I was in that table in the near future. I feel like Jimmy did not deserve that win and got it due to tricky manipulation (not politics), but hey, that's just IMO.
@@elitemaster666 Exactly. I know he wanted to keep DJ around cuz it was too early to be knocked out but DJ had set up his engines and over extended without anyway to protect himself..
@@elitemaster666 idk man they were playing a game with buds and just didn't want someone knocked out early, so Jimmy chose the chaos play. Worked out for him in the end, made for entertaining television.
@@elitemaster666 "It's not politics when I don't like the outcome."
"We need to deal with DJ" and "I have removal for one blocker" Jimmy never promised anything.
I think Vinny should have leveraged his position of clearly being the only player to answer DJ.
"Jimmy, Craig. I will deal with DJ for you if you give me x"
politics are very very strong and can swing a game, I only really like it when all players are on the same page of how much they want it. in this case Vinny was kinda screwed over simply because seemed like he didn't wanna make tonnes of deals.
but propaganda being destroyed first over both rhystic and survival made me cringe. then survival being allowed to be live at all...
"Old school commanders!! ...But we forgot to say 'old school cards in the 99 too', so watch 3/4ths of us literally never cast our commanders and just play broken new stuff, so it didn't even matter what our commanders were"
...welp, literally got clickbaited. Got filled with nostalgia for the golden days of commander for a few minutes, just to get back to voidwalkers and endless treasure tokens like it's 2022 again. Rip
Cry
Literally just finished an episode of this with Craig and now I get another one? Great!!
I love how Vinny was the only one to cast his commander^^
I always find it disappointing when a commander deck doesn't rly care abt it's commander, like Hazezon was just Naya enchantress, Shu Yun was just Jeskai Spellslinger, damia was just Sultai value and Rafiq was the only one who actually played and cared about his commander
That tends to happen with older commanders. Many of them just lack the same level of interaction and optimal plays often just ignore your commanders.
@@jaredthompson4901 why choose it as commander then?
I mean to be fair, DJ could’ve played his commander and made enough tokens to have wiped Craig or Vinny out before he walked into an infinite combo on his turn (so it was more a form of mercy in not wanting to just straight take him out?). But yeah Craig didn’t hit enough mana to even cast his commander I think (and what would’ve been the point since DJ was ramping to infinity well before) and Shu Yun is a voltron style commander, which given the way this game evolved, was not optimal at all since even if Jimmy could’ve pumped it to lethal on DJ instead of the Guttersnipe strat, he would’ve needed a way to make it unblockable and still have an extra 2 mana for the ghostly prison. So to me it’s just more how the game progressed that’s why we didn’t see much in the way of commanders.
I kind of hear what you're saying, however there is a balance of making a deck that functions around your Commander but can still operate if your Commander gets dealt with several times in a row. Board wipes are numerous and get easier and easier to cast. It's no fun when it's turn 5-6 and your Commander cost 9+ because it got blown up 2-3+ times already.
@@mmorkinism because that’s the theme of the episode. Playing old school commanders. I mean the OG commanders where the original elder dragons who are definitely not made for commander cards. It’s just how pre-2012ish commander typically worked
This is by far one of the best episode of Extra Turns. I need someone like Jimmy who can be a wildcard and just wants to have fun playing magic.
Hey, let's play some OLD Commanders - you know, those that got us into the Commander format.... *no one plays a commander the whole game*
and most of the cards that pulled that game through are also very recent and "you put them everywhere" kind of cards
Rafiq was an important turning point in the game. And most of the cards that did anything are older than the format (nxybloom and bolts citadel were the primary exceptions)
@@shauntoochaos235 Those are hardly old
@@OhNoTheFace Which is why he said they were exceptions...
Rafiq of the many was my very first commander. So it's awesome to see him in the "nostalgia" episode!
When I heard old-school, I expect to see a bit less of a pile-of-good-stuff and a bit more unique decks, although the game still manage to have a couple of crazy and thus entertaining turns.
Spoilers on the game:
Maybe some luck for DJ to have such a broken start of the game, but his engine was impressive. I think that Jimmy's choice of saving the archenemy with already an impressive board advantage was not very smart: even if a combination of sheer luck and making a deal with a gentleman can make it work in the end, enerally speaking it is more likely to be like throwing the game for the whole table, since no one could be able to catch up.
Daaammn look at DJ's board!
Spoiler: Jimmy's Shu Yun keeps getting more and more insane, love it
Wow, your bro Vinny clearly did some exercises. I'm proud of him :) Keep going !
So excited for this, getting a little bored with all the new pushed cards. This is a breath of fresh air!
lol meanwhile its all new pushed cards and a golbin bombardment and none of the commanders come out except rafiq
It was "let me tutor my wincon".
I love Storm-Kiln, I love Voidwalker, I love DRC
3:35 start of Extra Turns
17:33 for after commercials
I feel like somehow this episode was more blinged out than the Blingmas episode of Game Knights
The commanders may be older, but I feel like most of the 99’s were newer.
I feel like that was the point, though? We've seen old commanders with old cards before, because that's how those commanders were just built at the time. So it's not really anything new. An old commander that people have forgotten about, re-envisioned an actual deck that's viable in the current game of commander is pretty new though, as most people now (at least in the streaming world) just focus on new-commanders-with-new-cards. Old-commanders-with-new-cards is far more unique and interesting!
@@andrewsparkes6275 Except these were all just new good stuff decks. hell, only one of them actually used their old commanders
@@OhNoTheFace I think that's more a 'gameplay mistake', than a deckbuilding one. And I'm not saying it was a specific gameplay error for any of them to not play their commander at the time, either, as there wasn't actually an optimal times to play them. It was just a general gameplay facet of this game where the gameplay didn't highlight the commander specifically because none of them had an optimal time to play their commander.
I definitely wouldn't call them goodstuff decks, either, though; their decks were clearly created with the commander in mind, and all definitely leant into what the commander was meant to do (aside from maybe Craig's, which did seem to be ramp+fatties, but as you saw from the intro, you could see even he had a plan focused around the commander itself). Sure we didn't get to see the commanders themselves, but we got decks featuring new cards that leant into what the commander was trying to do (Vinny with pure buff stuff, Jimmy with a spellslinger side with a buff sidetheme, and DJ going ham with an enchantress deck). We didn't see a lot of cards that are just general goodstuff staples at all, actually, so I'm not sure where that accusation comes from.
tl;dr: While we didn't see the commanders themselves, we saw decklists that totally focused into what the commander would want them to do (that weren't just packed full of staples that had no ties to the commander at all), and the decks still ran as the commander would have played if the commanders were out. Jimmy still played spellslinger, Craig still played ramp-into-fatties-while-drawing and DJ still played a deck that made heavy use tokens with a self-enforced subtheme of enchantress. We saw one staple in Rhystic Study, and that was it.
Super cool to see that you guys are hiring! I've got a decent amount of experience with editing so I'm gonna give it a shot!
Love that last few turns. Guttersnipe was one of my win cons in my favorite niv mizzet spellslinger deck so I was ecstatic to see it used the same way.
The only thing that was old school about this game was that Tooth and Nail was cast.
Seeing DJ's boardstate is complete chaos. I love it.
Love how nobody other then vinny cast their commanders 😂
God those beautiful old school foils DJ has, very nice
I wish Vinny appeared more in games knights he was great to watch in the early episodes
Fun Fact: DJ was about to get 2 turns in a row, he was gonna get his normal turn that Craig was meant to control but can't because he was out of the game. Then he gets extra turn granted by Emrakul.
What for real?
I love that DJ was holding onto that soldier creation combo, just waiting for the right moment to deploy it
Keep up the great content you guys. AND GET THE PROFESSER BACK ON THE SHOW!!!
Wow, that was insane when he made that play!!! I never would have thought of doing that play.
I haven't seen the video.
DJ just pouring out the dice to represent 3 million^2 +1/+1 counters was amazing.
How's Mel Li doing? Haven't seen her in a while.
Last I heard, she's working for Riot Games.
Yeah I think she's working on riots catd game. I'd love to see her back tho she was great.
I was one of the first MTG tournament referees and I have such great memories of the game even in spite of the insane timing rules with interrupts, instants and the rest. :P Thank you Josh and Jimmy for doing this podcast. I came late to your show but you bring back the best memories.
"Green Black Blue BOMBS!" Love the throw back!
When the Red player does something crazy and WINS!!!
Great win Jimmy, Great show guys!
This content is absolutely amazing. You guys were a main reason I started playing Magic and the reason I have such a synergized personal deck. List? That's for another time lol
As someone who's trying to convert my Rhys deck into a Jetmir deck, with the intention to eventually foil the whole thing out, I'm super jealous of how shiny DJ's deck is.
I'm watching DJ's deck play and I play jetmir so yeah going to take some inspiration 😅
Rabble rousing would really work with a card that gives all my creatures 1/1 when a creature ETB
I lived in LA until last year. If I hadn't moved out I would apply for the job ASAP! Sounds like a blast
This was one of the better episodes of extra turns / game knights that has come out in a while
Pls showcase more matches like this. Some people dont like to see these matches but I think these high end matches are amazing. Watching top tier decks pop off is captivating.
DJ's board state in the end is everything that I love about Commander.
Insane game guys! Ive never seen a board state with comboing like DJs. So fun to watch!
Gonna say it along with everyone else, mad props to DJ for keeping his end of the deal. Super respectable, super good dude
A friend of mine loves Rafiq and has a voltron deck with him. It’s a really good deck
I hope he runs some sort of spot removal for enemy lands, I've seen a Rafiq deck shut down by Maze Of Ith a few times!
@@BigDrew49 he should, but we don’t usually have it in our decks so he’s good
I have a request and hope also other people will support it:
We see many times in game knights and extra turn people playing super expensive cards (fetch, dual lands, commander staples, etc.) and you also had a special bling (try to be the most expensive as possible) episode of game knights.
Could we have a representative episode of the other side of the spectrum showing that commander can be cheap and affordable while still fun, for people who cannot afford more expensive cards? I think it could be nice and interesting seeing decks that have only cards that are not over 1 or 2$ competing on the show. It also leads to interesting and unique choices of how to build decks, going away from staples and uniformity on how to build decks.
I’m so happy Jimmy pulled it off at the end. Well deserved good sir!
Unrelated to the actual game but I just wanted to commend you guys for knowing what an "entry level position" is. Josh and Jimmy being in the film space must know how hard it can be to get into your passion and it's really cool seeing you extend that to someone in the community who wants to make Magic content.
Well... What can I say... At least it was good to see some old faces again
That turn DJ takes at about 25 min mark was a doozie wow. Great match guys.
"Never in a million soldiers did I think that would happen!" lol Great game! reminded me of me and my buds when we used to play tabletop.
Those foil Odyssey plains tho... *chef's kiss*
Wow, Shu Yun and Rafiq. Used to watch these decks slam into each other over and over again back when I started playing commander too. Good times
I love the mad scientist “it woooooorks!” at the end
In this game of Extra Turns, DJ plays solitaire. 😂😂😂 Man after my own heart.
Great show. So I have been watching for years and just now when watching "john dies at the end" realized Jimmy was in it...
Great to see Vinny back! I always love seeing new and returning players to this show. :D
Great game! But I feel deals no longer hold if it means losing the game while having the opportunity to win.
Agreed.
Awesome decks! Great game. Thank you all for the great gameplays done by the Command Zone team.
That ending was insane! Found myself routing for Jimmy in such a comeback ♥
Always put an exception to any deal that if it comes down to one on one, no deal.
Jimmy ended that game like a man juggling hot coals. So damn spicy with such a cool finish. Man, solid work!!
This was an all right game. Only all right. DJ kind of ended it before it began and not only did he do that, but he didn’t even really show up his commander and how it interacts with the rest of the deck. And then everyone else didn’t really get to do anything outside of maybe Jimmy
An infinite wall of infininite/infinite creatures burned to death by 1 tiny goblin. Love it.
Too bad I moved away from California... I coulda applied to work at Command Zone! What a dream to get paid to work with Magic the Gathering stuffs! I'm old, and set in my career... but one can still dream! Good luck on whoever get's the job! :-)
Just starting the vid. I've always wanted to build Shu Yun so I am super excited for this one.
DJ channeling Macho Man for the intro. Only one may sand, brother! Yeeeaaah!
Was a fun game. DJ didn't have plans to play with the commander it seemed. Just enchantment deck
Vinny looks great! love the show
Moral of this episode "thanks Jimmy"
I liked the idea of using older commanders, but this really just served to show how much stronger the newer cards are. The one commander to even do anything only attacked twice and left. The whole match was just an average Enchantress deck almost being stopped by Bolas Citadel and then Guttersnipe and Storm-Kiln teaming up. This wasn't unique or creative, it just boiled down to "commanderless EDH" because other than the commanders, the decks were what you'd expect to see anywhere else.
this + Jimmy changing mind out of nowhere + dj just sitting there letting Jimmy win while having instant speed infinite kill is what made the whole episode super lame for me
@@snowhusk You never make deals again if you break them when it's convenient
Love when you guys upload extra turns 😁
I also appreciate that Vinny let Jimmy be the first to do what he loves: hitting his own life total for power.
Heck yeah, I applied lmao. I started playing magic bc of seeing yall on here 🖤
Quote of the day "I'm gonna hit that propaganda. There's a lot of attacking decks out there and it's just feels unfair.".
Five seconds later "I'm gonna play ghostly prison."
This just makes me want to build Naya tokens, although I definitely don't expect it to be nearly as explosive.
Vinny is the hero of the episode! The only one who actually used the older commander lol
Love the old school commanders. Would be cool of they did this every once and awhile, like a series.
Does it really matter though, if they remain in the CZ and the rest of the decks play like regular 2022 optimized Commander decks?
@@ROMANTIKILLER2 I'd honestly like to see old school cards brought back too.
But I like seeing variety
i didn't see anyone else mention it; 13:30, earthcraft trigger was used on the land with trace abundance, which isnt allowed because it has shrould.
Trace of Abundance is on a Mountain, not a forest that got untapped there
Jimmy!!!!!! My guy!!! Great job way to come back
DJ I loved your basic land base!
Idk how much it would have affected the outcome of the game but trace of abundance gives the land shroud so DJ couldn't have untapped it with earthcraft
I'm surprised there's only one comment pointing this out, was just about to make one and assumed there were a bunch of people who already had.
Every game where Jimmy has lands is a win for me
I would love to apply, but I don’t live anywhere near your area. I hope someone who both loves magic and is nice joins your team. I look forward to meeting them if they ever show up on Game Knights or Extra Turns. Much love for everyone at the Command Zone.
DJ’s deck was beautiful! I love making tokens but my god the power in that deck! What a fun episode.
Two thumbs up for bringing back Vinny !!!!!!! Love that guy
DJ with ALL the Bling!! Enchantress is my favorite theme for EDH and your deck didn't disappoint. I've foiled out everything I could possibly do in my Ghave enchantress deck EXCEPT for the queen of enchantments Academy Rector. Even at 1080p I was blinded by it's foiling.
When victory is on the line, there is a Darth Vader line that would be applied here.
Man, it feels like these starts keep getting stronger
I love to see shu yun. still to this day one of my favorite commanders. i can't wait to throw vesuvan duplimancy in my build
These were some high powered decks and was great watching y'all play
I still say making deals is so powerful. Very fun game glad to see the old gang slinging spells!
Well done Jimmy. Great game all!
1 hell of a comeback win
I laughed so hard when all the dice was dumped out
