    So much people talk about death grips as this completely alien bizarre inaccessible thing but they r actually really indebted to 80s and 90s electronic music genres, industrial, techno, digital hardcore and such, and this context sometimes gets lost in younger people but becomes clearer when we see someone like your dad, who was around at the time these things were most popular, listen to their music and immediately enjoy it and not find it off putting at all

    • @mocapcow2933
      @mocapcow2933 Год назад +51

      I think it’s bizarre and inaccessible because of it being tied to hip hop. The closest the hip hop audience has heard about was yeezus. But Ye has this cult like status that makes his fans enjoy everything. So seeing something more experimental by a group most don’t care about, they just see this as noise.

    I think the main reason DG gets hyped as being so goddamn intense is because nearly every fan just trying out their stuff with minimal knowledge can remember their first time of feeling like you’re audibly getting your shit rocked by their music, and it’s a lot of young people like myself getting introduced to it so there is that newness to it. That being said, this is also easily their most accessible project, whereas something like Bottomless Pit, Year of the Snitch, or even a lot of Powers that B have way more experimental and fucked sounding songs on it overall. This is still my favorite of theirs though, and I’m glad you guys dig it so much!

    I think it's definitely worth mentioning, for whenever you get around to The Powers That B, that the instrumentals on the first half are ENTIRELY Zach Hill on an electronic drum kit playing every sound, which not only gives a deeper appreciation and insight to his skill as a drummer but also gives clarity on why the björk samples are so choppy and why the album sounds so glitchy in general. (Also knowing that Zach Hill doesn't use a double bass pedal so his insanely fast kick drums are done with one foot makes it more technically impressive). I think it's easy to overlook the instrumental in certain ways because it's so electronic and intricate you assume it was just perfectly crafted in a DAW but knowing what you're hearing is actually being performed and recorded live by one person on a drum kit adds such a deeper sense of emotion to the songs, especially, for example, on the outro to Big Dipper and the majority of Have A Sad Cum BB.

    It should be noted almost all the instrumentals on this album were played on Roland v-drums (“bangin bones on Roland”). There are more uses of samples and synths on here than other records, but most all of the rhythms were performed by Zach. It’s a testament to his technical ability that he pulled it off with most listeners assuming it’s all programmed, but you can hear that the rhythms are not programmed/quantized if you listen closely.

    • @contraaa_

      Incorrect. The first album of The Powers That B, (NOTM) is the album that was recorded entirely on the Roland V-Drums.

      @@contraaa_ All of their records were recorded with v-drums, the liner notes of The Powers That B was the first time it was confirmed by the band. I got a vasectomy and moved and he had a kid and lives in the same area and we talked 9 or 10 times a year but I miss those days of where you and dad take me.
