Whole Lotta Red and The Money Store are two of my favorite albums of all time. I have friends that love one and hate the other. They’re so similar yet so different, both very innovative in their respective sub-genres.
If you’re having a hard time with the lyrics there is an amazing video called “the money store documentary” that basically explains every track’s lyrics in great detail.
Glad you caught the Prodigy influence off rip. One of the best to do it. RIP Keith. Additionally, Carti and Death Grips contrast in a sense of WLR seems to be more about a celebration of yourself, flaunting your individuality and how pure uniqueness can gain you a lot of clout. Death Grips has a more introverted confidence to them. They know they have a unique thing on there hands except there’s more tones of existentialism and confusion towards 21st century living. Carti is like “fuck it, im here, I’m young, I’m a rockstar, where are the bitches?” If you wanted to make a basic comparison to genres Carti is like Hair Metal and Death Grips is Goth or Black Metal. DG also does a great job of carrying on the torch from bands like Black Sabbath, Black Flag and even Metallica in a sense of diehard fan base, classic merch and logos etc.
crazy how deep you are jumping into hip-hop this early. straight from tyler/frank to death grips lmao. also havent watched the video yet but dont worry if you dont immediately love it (although it does have lots of elements from rock which you may enjoy). definitely an album that grows on you after you listen more.
The drummer zack hill is from Sacramento from where I am. My 8th grade English teacher was drummer and a huge punk rock fan, he taught me a lot about music and about death grips apparently he went to some of his shows cause zack was just insane. My teacher also had a band back in 2000s and gave me a copy. They were pretty dope, they had two drummers and it was split between ear.
This is my all time favourite band. Just saw them live, that’s a whole other experience. Their drummer, Zach Hill is an absolute monster. Hearing acoustic drums over the stuff is amazing. I love seeing new music fans react to Death Grips. Checking all your DG videos out. It’s so much fun. I wish I could experience it all for the first time again.
I love how by the time you get to system blower its like it finally clicked and you got it. Great seeing people listening to death grips for the first time.
A smoother transition to more experimental hip hop would be better suited with an artist like Jpegmafia. Oh there are definitelyyyy people who don't like death grips. They're the poster child for weird rap, and as such they're kind of famous for being either among the best or worst hip-hop has to offer depending on who you're talking to. Personally I have no opinion on them as an outfit, as this is the only album of theirs I've heard, but I do think this is a very cool album and it's hard to deny how immensely influential it's been on the last decade of music.
I’m new to DG, what artists or albums could you say it has influenced? I’m very versed in the traditional hip hop of old school BIG, Tupac, Snoop, 2000s 50 cent lil Wayne Kanye, 2010s on Tyler drake etc etc. I’ve never heard anything this chaotic in the hip hop world (and I mean stuff the average fan would run into, if you’re aware and looking for this stuff I’d put you in a deeper fan level cause every genres has sub genres and twists of that to find out there if you dig enough). Some of Danny browns and JPEGMafia songs remind me of this type of chaos.

Absolutely loved this reaction and I've been eagerly anticipating it, though I'd be lying if I said that I thought you'd enjoy some of the songs on first listen lmao. I'm a big death grips fan, but the first few times I heard their music it caught me so off guard that I didn't actually start enjoying it until some months after I discovered them. I don't know exactly what happened, maybe the last sane part of my brain was killed off by the 808s, but something eventually clicked and now all of their music is ear candy. I'm just pleasantly surprised that you enjoyed as much as you did! Looking forward to the additional thoughts video if you're making one :)
Additional Thoughts will happen for sure. I want to keep that format going forward (new album, listen to and digest it more, then additional thoughts). I need to crack off some more listens, but that's gonna require some headphones. The wifey isn't vibing to Death Grips 🤣
Probably not the greatest thing to listen to for the first time when hungover haha. Although I think for anyone, hungover or not, their first project Exmilitary is probably the best thing to listen to from them first

Loved your take on the album, and its various songs. Even if it wasn't your jam all the time, just hearing your take and analysis was awesome! Would love to you see your reaction to some other Death Grips albums! 'No Love Deep Web' would be the one album I'd most love to see you react to, with Year of the Snitch being a close second!
Your reaction when the chorus kicked in during "The Fever" was exactly the same reaction I had when I first heard that too. XD So happy you reacted to this album. Death Grips really had everything going for them back then. A truly edgy sound with mass market levels of production quality and incredible hooks. Also, I'm impressed that even as a fairly new hip-hop fan, you seem to get the appeal and intentions of the music you're listening to.
i can get why you were so focused and confused on the lyrics as its part of why i love death grips so much, their lyrics are so cryptic, eerie, and advanced, ive never heard anyone else attempt lyrics in the same way mc ride does.
A lot of the people I’ve talked to about Death Grips including myself took a looong time to get into fully. At first I would just play a couple songs for my friends as like a novelty because it was so crazy at the time but the more I did that the more I actually started to truly enjoy the songs & dove into their entire discog (Edit) you weren’t lying about Prodigy, now I’m a fan. I really appreciate you putting us youngins on music we might’ve missed🤟

I think the whole concept of death grips as a band will make sense for you more once you listen to the powers that be and especially their song ON GP,that song is legit terrifyingly suicidal and the climax of the album

Enter the 36 Chambers i REALLY hope he listens to because that album just cannot be matched imo. Their chemistry is unbelievable and the production, and the raw yet perfect sound quality. I agree with the other comment about SRS being the best Earl album
I saw then live the other week and they opened with System Blower. It was fuckming awesome, especially with the live drums. Such a high energy way to open a show
You have such a great personality. I won’t be surprised seeing your channel blow up. Regarding the audio if you want to play it louder you can add a noise gate to your mic so when you reach a certain db level the mic goes silent, or you could just mute the mic on your recording software.
Money Store is the one Death Grips album I'm most familiar with but it's great. Punk Weight is my favourite song on the album. That beat switch is my favourite thing ever.
In my opinon Death Grips really set the stage for the entire experimental rap explosion that we saw in the 2010's. Not that they are the only group or the first group, but their influence can't be understated. Their drummer Zach Hill is one of the most important artists of my lifetime imo.
Loved watching you react, made me laugh out loud numerous times. Might be the closest thing for me to hearing it for the first time again :). Just wanted to say if you're into lyrics, Hacker is legendary imo. Also: check out Beware off their Exmilitary EP, lyrics wise there is so much more to explore in their discography. Really appreciate you digging the sounds on first listen. Again, thanks for the experience!
I didn't like Death Grips the first time I heard them, but they were interesting enough that I tried listening to them again at a later date. They're one of my favorite groups now.
The unpredictable nature of their music is universal to all of their albums - which is something i really cherish with listening to them. Each album they do something new for the band, and something new for music in general, every album. I really would consider listening to their other albums, Exmilitary, No Love Deep Web, and Bottomless Pit (in that order). Would make for a great reaction and i always love hearing the first thoughts of people who haven't heard Death Grips. Hope you enjoy the next ones if you choose to listen!
It cracks me up that I thought they might be Brazilian when they're actually from a city not far from where I live. I feel like Sepultura and Death Grips would vibe so well together.
it was very entertaining watching the hangover lift and the music get progressively better as it happens lol. if you are looking for that dirtier kind of sound “no love deep web,” their next album after the money store, is great if thats what you’re craving from this :D
A lot of the genius behind Death Grips, and I may get crucified for this by some of the more pretentious hiphop fans, is similar to Carti where it’s all about an audio aesthetic. It’s coordinated chaos that these guys are able to put together though some unreal talent because everything you hear is on purpose. The major difference between the two is that while Carti’s lyrics quite literally do not matter, MC Ride (Death Grips’ frontman) has some very well throughout out that are insanely cryptic lyrics that he makes impossible to understand, again, on purpose. They force you to really pay attention to the music. This is one of my favorite albums of all time because it scratches the part of my brain that loves chaos, I can’t say the same about their other works as a whole because this might be their easiest album to digest, but the creativity is always there.
The music is definitely on purpose. And even though I don't understand the lyrics (and they are cryptic), they seem intentional as well. Very interesting group making some impressive music.
My first time hearing this album was life-changing. It made me understand Hip hop, I still do not know how or why entirely. Ride's brutal lyricism, the whole way it just kind of does all this raw unfiltered rock thing, I got it. It was like 3 AM and I just stared shattering beer bottles and it woke up people and I just walked through the glass and told the guy that was at my door "This is awesome, I am changed" He had no idea what I was talking about, I pointed to my headphones "When you are off work we are listening to this. No, we are!" the guy laughed said I was drunk (yeah obviously) but then it was just us and we blasted the album so loud. He just stared at the stereo for the entire first song, I remember grabbing him by the shoulders and screaming "Aye aye" and the guy said "This is insane, I feel like I just joined a cult, the wall is not the wall color. The wall is not the wall color!" That means he literally felt as if the entire room had been shifted in color (it... had I had colored light in the room for like three years he just never noticed) and he understood all my crazy punk shit, it was fantastic.
Major props for diving into hip-hop head-on like this, let alone Death Grips. If you're looking for that darker sound from them, Bottomless Pit is a much heavier album once wrap your head around this one - it takes a while for everyone :)
There's a quick little documentary out there from Pitchfork called "Checking in at 20" about Lightning Bolt and Deerhoof (both great bands), and I think it's Deerhoof's drummer, Greg Saunier, who says something along the lines of "all music is derivative in some respect, but Lightning Bolt is the first time I've heard a band that sounds like they started from complete scratch." Death Grips sort of has that going for them too. MC Ride of Death Grips said in one interview that they had no influences, but Jimi Hendrix if he had to name one lol.
It’s so cool seeing raw reactions of someone’s first dip into Death Grips. When people like it it’s magical. I love how you analyze the lyrics too because that’s just how MC Ride writes, very poetic and verbose. Adds a whole new layer to the review. Good shit man!
Please, if you're looking for a darker, more rock-influenced tone you'd be doing yourself a disservice to not listen to their album Exmilitary. Every second I live knowing that you haven't heard this album is agony!
I would love to see your reaction to "There Existed an Addiction to Blood" by clipping. It has an amazing atmosphere and some really great and well structured lyrics that i think you'll enjoy
Yes their live performances can get visceral, animalistic sometimes. I recall one particular instance When they were on tour for their next album and the drummer beat his snare drum so aggressively that it fell off the screws. The vocalist proceeded to grab the drum and throw it at the computer that the DJ was using behind him, all right in time for the beat drop. Most of their memorable performances are for albums you haven’t heard yet but I found a concert recording in which the last two songs they perform are Get Got and I’ve Seen Footage, the time stamps are in the description. ruclips.net/video/oqY1a7fBLWA/видео.html
You should understand the context of hearing this when it came out in 2012, a lot of these ideas were kind of stolen by higher profile artists later on (Kanye), but at the time it was like an atomic bomb dropped on hip hop and independent music in general. It's still so powerful almost a decade later
Looking forward to your additional thoughts video on this. Death Grips is really hard to 'get' on first listen. You either hate it or are intrigued by it at first, but to love it you need some time to adjust to their standard. As for videos of live performances, I don't think you can go wrong with anything, but have one video where MC Ride (the rapper/singer) just fucking smashes a laptop by throwing the drummer's tom/snare at it lmao: ruclips.net/video/g_maeU9qttU/видео.html
gladly not the case :)
saw them live this earlier this month and am going back to see them next month!
Whole Lotta Red and The Money Store are two of my favorite albums of all time. I have friends that love one and hate the other. They’re so similar yet so different, both very innovative in their respective sub-genres.
I can see why someone would love one and hate the other. They really are that different from each other.
If you’re having a hard time with the lyrics there is an amazing video called “the money store documentary” that basically explains every track’s lyrics in great detail.
found the link ruclips.net/video/NBeiKSJVOsI/видео.html
Thank you!
They were pretty dope, they had two drummers and it was split between ear.
what was your teachers band called?
This is my all time favourite band. Just saw them live, that’s a whole other experience. Their drummer, Zach Hill is an absolute monster. Hearing acoustic drums over the stuff is amazing.
I love seeing new music fans react to Death Grips. Checking all your DG videos out. It’s so much fun. I wish I could experience it all for the first time again.
Bob thank you for constantly re-uploading till this shit got finally posted for good.
I love how by the time you get to system blower its like it finally clicked and you got it. Great seeing people listening to death grips for the first time.
he listened to death grips for the first time ever on a hangover and still enjoyed it 😭 I love this man
A smoother transition to more experimental hip hop would be better suited with an artist like Jpegmafia. All of his albums r very chaotic and eclectic but also have more traditional hip hop aspects to them that you'd be more familiar with. I think you should for sure check out Veteran, All My Heroes Are Cornballs or the latest LP! I'd put money on you enjoying it, dude is a hilarious genius
Also check out Danny Brown too, his album Atrocity Exhibition is fucking awesome
Veteran is slowly drifting upward on my list of albums to do. JPEGMAFIA is coming relatively soon.
@@bobthepoppop Awesome man, love the insight and openness u put into ur videos, keep it up!
Honestly, id say go to Exmilitary next!! Then, just in order. It's their first album, just isn't considered as such and isn't on streaming bc they couldn't afford to clear some samples. But, definitely a group to dive into
It's a mixtape, which is why The Money Store is their debut studio album
I love how honest your reactions are, makes it very clear you have good taste because you're not just praising it because your audience likes it, you're just giving your honest thoughts and recommending dope songs along the way, appreciate your content man
Oh there are definitelyyyy people who don't like death grips.
@@DroppingCents dg influcned Kanye to make yeezus and Tyler to make cherry bomb
@@tommyvercetti5945 kanye has said he and his producers didn't listen to dg making yeezus
@@tommyvercetti5945 that’s false, there’s a dope documentary on yeezus (on every Kanye album) that pulls together all the behind the scenes making of them and I’ve watched them all numerous times, no DG mention. Never heard of them until seeing what people were recommending bob to listen to. I dig their style though!
@@tommyvercetti5945 ruclips.net/video/S2-PD83pF1E/видео.html
Here ya go, this page made extensive documentaries and each Kanye project and a few other artists too
I think we don’t mind you not being revolutionary in your reactions. We like you discovering and enjoy new music/talking with references. Keep it up bro 🙏🏻
W comment, W pfp
@@lain-. the duality of man
Probably not the greatest thing to listen to for the first time when hungover haha. Although I think for anyone, hungover or not, their first project Exmilitary is probably the best thing to listen to from them first
The hangover definitely made it harder lol
I just love how much he enjoys being surprised by each song, it's amazing to watch someone discover something new especially in music and because of the 3rd person perspective, we get its even more fun to in a way watch ourselves through him.
man dont be afraid to go on tangents, i love to hear ppl talkin bout other bands, especially when theyre referencing parts of what theyre hearing to it. gives me a new perspective to hear both of em in!
RUclips dont wanna see u win Bob 😤
Dude, I can't even... this shit is ridiculous
XD
So happy you reacted to this album. Death Grips really had everything going for them back then. A truly edgy sound with mass market levels of production quality and incredible hooks.
Also, I'm impressed that even as a fairly new hip-hop fan, you seem to get the appeal and intentions of the music you're listening to.
The drums on the chorus to The Fever are so goddamn good
Zach Hill is the drummer of the Trio, all the drum sounds are actually Zach going nuts lol
i can get why you were so focused and confused on the lyrics as its part of why i love death grips so much, their lyrics are so cryptic, eerie, and advanced, ive never heard anyone else attempt lyrics in the same way mc ride does.
A lot of the people I’ve talked to about Death Grips including myself took a looong time to get into fully. At first I would just play a couple songs for my friends as like a novelty because it was so crazy at the time but the more I did that the more I actually started to truly enjoy the songs & dove into their entire discog
(Edit) you weren’t lying about Prodigy, now I’m a fan. I really appreciate you putting us youngins on music we might’ve missed🤟
I think you'd like The Powers That B's second part, it has some really nice guitar solos and a big Rock influence
These vids are your best man. The whole lotta red reaction + analysis and this one are gold. I love that you throw yourself off the deep end and it's making some amazing content. Keep it up man!
It really has been a deep end in some cases. It's been a lot of fun for me to wrestle with these new styles and sounds
I think the whole concept of death grips as a band will make sense for you more once you listen to the powers that be and especially their song ON GP,that song is legit terrifyingly suicidal and the climax of the album
DG is a unique experience. For recommendations to a more traditional hip hop experience, I would recommend some enter 36 chambers, madvillainy, and I don’t like shit I don’t go outside by earl sweatshirt.
if hes gonna listen to some Earl its gotta be srs
Enter the 36 Chambers i REALLY hope he listens to because that album just cannot be matched imo. Their chemistry is unbelievable and the production, and the raw yet perfect sound quality. I agree with the other comment about SRS being the best Earl album
@@maximilianmiller1963 yeah
@@maximilianmiller1963 srs is not a good introduction to earl, his earlier projects are the best as an introduction to earl
LMAO you literally guessed that they're fans of Prodigy, that's insane, they've done a remix of firestarter
I saw then live the other week and they opened with System Blower. It was fuckming awesome, especially with the live drums. Such a high energy way to open a show
Let’s GO. Best show of my life.
You have such a great personality. I won’t be surprised seeing your channel blow up. Regarding the audio if you want to play it louder you can add a noise gate to your mic so when you reach a certain db level the mic goes silent, or you could just mute the mic on your recording software.
This is a good idea, thanks for the tip 🤘
Money Store is the one Death Grips album I'm most familiar with but it's great.
Punk Weight is my favourite song on the album. That beat switch is my favourite thing ever.
In my opinon Death Grips really set the stage for the entire experimental rap explosion that we saw in the 2010's. Not that they are the only group or the first group, but their influence can't be understated. Their drummer Zach Hill is one of the most important artists of my lifetime imo.
THANK YOU! I could not wait for you to react to this album
I fucking love watching people experience Death Grips for the first time. Really enjoying your content so far man!
Hope you enjoy the next ones if you choose to listen!
as a brazilian follower of your vids, I'm very happy to know you like Sepultura, I thinks the comparrison is very good between DG and them
It cracks me up that I thought they might be Brazilian when they're actually from a city not far from where I live. I feel like Sepultura and Death Grips would vibe so well together.
Lmao I'm loving this video so much. There's nothing like watching someone dive into The Money Store with an open mind. Thank you!
it was very entertaining watching the hangover lift and the music get progressively better as it happens lol. if you are looking for that dirtier kind of sound “no love deep web,” their next album after the money store, is great if thats what you’re craving from this :D
Youve been one of my top channels of last year! So excited for what's to come from you;
God I can’t imagine being introduced to death grips with a hangover
A lot of the genius behind Death Grips, and I may get crucified for this by some of the more pretentious hiphop fans, is similar to Carti where it’s all about an audio aesthetic. It’s coordinated chaos that these guys are able to put together though some unreal talent because everything you hear is on purpose. The major difference between the two is that while Carti’s lyrics quite literally do not matter, MC Ride (Death Grips’ frontman) has some very well throughout out that are insanely cryptic lyrics that he makes impossible to understand, again, on purpose. They force you to really pay attention to the music. This is one of my favorite albums of all time because it scratches the part of my brain that loves chaos, I can’t say the same about their other works as a whole because this might be their easiest album to digest, but the creativity is always there.
as a carti fan, i agree hella with you
The music is definitely on purpose. And even though I don't understand the lyrics (and they are cryptic), they seem intentional as well. Very interesting group making some impressive music.
carried lyrics are dogshit but it doesn’t take away from the music itself for me
you will grow to love deathgrips bob
It's already happening 🤘
If you love rock you would love their first album exmilitary. Definitely their most rock/punk album
My first time hearing this album was life-changing. It made me understand Hip hop, I still do not know how or why entirely. Ride's brutal lyricism, the whole way it just kind of does all this raw unfiltered rock thing, I got it. It was like 3 AM and I just stared shattering beer bottles and it woke up people and I just walked through the glass and told the guy that was at my door "This is awesome, I am changed"
He had no idea what I was talking about, I pointed to my headphones "When you are off work we are listening to this. The wall is not the wall color!"
That means he literally felt as if the entire room had been shifted in color (it... had I had colored light in the room for like three years he just never noticed) and he understood all my crazy punk shit, it was fantastic.
You should react to Atrocity Exhibition by Danny Brown its a simmilar album but rap
Major props for diving into hip-hop head-on like this, let alone Death Grips. If you're looking for that darker sound from them, Bottomless Pit is a much heavier album once wrap your head around this one - it takes a while for everyone :)
what i find incredible about death grips is how insane and fucked their music can be, while also having insanely catchy choruses.
Just went and checked out some of aphex twin and discovered that Kanye actually sampled the tune to Avril 14th in My beautiful dark twisted fantast
I love the description of their sound as “Aphex Twin put through a shredder.” 😂 Now I can’t un-hear it.
Listen to Exmilitary or Powers that B by Death Grips, you'll really like the guitar samples on both albums (especially on Exmilitary)
It's still so powerful almost a decade later
didn’t expect the “roots” comparison. he makes a point. both brilliant, genre-defying albums. respect 🇧🇷
Looking forward to your additional thoughts video on this. Death Grips is really hard to 'get' on first listen. You either hate it or are intrigued by it at first, but to love it you need some time to adjust to their standard.
As to their live performances, I haven't seen them myself, but I think this video is a good indication of how they perform - definitely on my to do-list: watch?v=BinKCtUTWBA

Your reviews are always so good! That system blower sample was a tennis match lol they have a lot of crazy samples.
I appreciate you doing this so much I can see you not fully getting the delivery but seeing you look in disbelief consistently between each track and that evil laugh that emerges when you catch certain lyrics. This is a great first reaction.

Great video Bob! Their live shows are insane. They haven't toured in a while but a Death Grips concert is on my bucket list. I would recommend their first tape Exmilitary as either a personal listen or a video!
if you want more death grips i highly recommend you listen to “Jenny Death” (or the second disc on their double album “The Powers That B”). the sound there is more rock influenced and i think you’d like it :)
Thanks a bunch for the prodigy recommendation! Listening to their first album rn

“i dont think these guys copied wlr” in reference to death grips is so funny. great reaction !!
I see the appeal in Death Grips but I've never been a fan myself. Still interesting to see Bob's reaction and see his perspective!
It was a bit of a process getting onto their wavelength, as you probably noticed during this video. It took a couple tracks to catch up. Good shit though. After a couple listens, it's really settling into the brain well (for me anyway)
i heard your comment on system blower and hearing 'laughing', which is rly cool to me considering what that sound is sampled from. i think you'll get a kick outta looking up a 'all samples in the money store' video because they sampled some really interesting shit
It’s been ten years since I first heard The Money Store and I completely understand your review, viscerally. Such a great album.
I'm really happy to see you dive head first into Death Grips, their entire discography is a journey and the deeper you get into it, the more you start loosing yourself in the mayhem.
I definitely hope to see more in the future

listening to death grips with a hangover thats dangerous recipe for a headache lol
how i will sum up death grips is imagine your on all the drugs in the world and you have to perform live on stage in a underground bunker but there playing a song youve never heard and you have to make up the lyrics but the drummer is dope. you have to be noided
