A comment, not a correction. A Mk 1 Spitfire was good for about 360 mph, after you got rid of the 2 blade wooden prop and fitted a 3 blade variable pitch. That was late '39 ~ mid '40. By May or June '45 they were making Mk 19 Spits with Griffin engines. A Mk 1 Merlin made slightly over a thousand hp. A Griffin 65 made 2,220 hp (1,655 kW) at 11,000 ft (3,350 m MS gear), +21 psi at 2,750 rpm using 150 octane fuel. I don't have a definitive top speed for a Mk 19 with a bubble canopy and Griffin 65 using the juicy 150 Octane fuel, but word of mouth at the time said it was slightly more than a match for a P51D ~ by about walking speed. Better climb rate by about 50 feet / minute, which is to say about the same. The thing was you could fly a 51D to Berlin, have a brief fight there, and fly it home again. There's no way on Earth you could do that with a Spitfire. Then you had others, like the Corsair and the Super Corsair, with a speed of 446 mph, and I don't have a good figure for the super-Corsair with the corncob, but it was faster at less than 12k ft. Up above 20 ~ not so much. Thing is, there were a number of aircraft that were all very very close in speed. The long-nose FW-190 was in the same ball-park. So was the Tempest. So was the P47 Thunderbolt. So far ~ so confusing. But wait ~ it gets better! Go to the middle of '45 and there are at least 8 aircraft in testing, that we call 'Super Props' which got canned before they made it into service. The DeHaviland Hornet at least reached service, although it didn't see combat in WW2. Same with the Hawker Sea Fury. Now a Hornet was like a 3/4 scale Mosquito, but it still had 2 Merlins. The in service version was good for about 470 ~ 480 mph, but the prototype in testing (no guns, being flown by Eric 'Winkle' Brown) was good for 515 mph. The Sea Fury was listed at 460, but word of mouth said it was faster than Spitfires and all sorts of other late war fighters that had similar numbers, on paper. On paper, it was 20 mph faster than a P51D ~ in real life, it seemed a lot more than that. The Merlin was 27 litres and good for about 1,500 hp. The Centaurus was 18 cylinders and 54 litres, and good for very nearly 3,ooo hp. Sorry ~ I'm rambling. TLDR ~ there are way over a dozen aeroplanes in this general class you don't mention. A Texan or a Tucano is not even close.
