- Continuing the build series on Turbulence. We took historical footage to show parts of the build of Turbulence. However, the aircraft's engine failed on the way to Oshkosh last month so the plane will be undergoing an engine swap. We will continue the series after the last build video with videos of completing that engine swap (still to come). Still searching for an engine!

As someone who spent 38 years helping build aircraft with Fairchild Republic and Lockheed Martin including the A10, F22, C130 and mods to the C5 you gave the best advice I have heard about pushing it. Push it, but do it slowly and never take the unnecessary risk that could end it all. Live to fly again tomorrow. Great video Mike.

As a relatively new ultralight pilot in Australia with a big love for all the bush flying vids, that last comment was a very good reminder. The first and foremost goal of any flight should be for everyone to come home safely.

Thanks for that bit at the end, Mike. I'm still on the lower side of flight hours and I find myself at the point of really needing to make sure I don't push limits. It's that "just good enough to be really dangerous" time in my aviation journey. I handled some pretty gnarly conditions, but they were things that popped up and I had outs already planned. I constantly remind myself that just because I have dealt with those conditions doesn't mean that I shouldn't be avoiding them at all costs. I've implemented hard limits that fall below what I know I'm capable of. That way if conditions diminish some, I have a safety margin. Having you reiterate this further solidifies that decision was correct and adding some more margin is better yet.

I appreciate your comments about safety. For me, every preflight I'm looking for reasons NOT to fly. Every approach to land I treat as a go-around. Being in the right state of mind is hugely important for flight safety.
I was going to say you are a cross between Carrol Shelby and Chip Foose but frankly you are way past that point.
I love the look of your creations, the form follows function ethic of them. You build new creatures, Mike and it's a blast watching you have a blast doing it while you stay firmly rooted in common sense and ethics.
You are an inspiration and will long remain such.

From a 30 year Commercial Pilot and a Degreed Engineer to you..."there are old pilots and bold pilots but no old bold pilots". IMHO he has more money than brains and will eventually push his limited knowledge too far with catastrophic results.

Yes, these Patey boys are UNEQUALED AVIATORS in "EVERY" WAY. And I THINK that is the BEST THING about them. A LOT of people are smart and talented in a lot of different ways. And I guess in all honesty, I haven't met any other "SUPER STARS". BUT I have met Mike and his genuine GOODNESS is what truly makes him SHINE ! ! ! !

He did “back to work!” with us on video and made our day! We also got to meet their amazing wives and see first hand what a wonderful family they are. They are all the real deal! My interest in airplanes started when I was a very young girl. At ten years old, I helped my dad restore his 1940 L4 Piper Cub. At seventeen I worked at an airport helped maintain and restore all kinds of antique and classic aircraft. From a 1929 Brunner Winkle Bird biplane to a 1950 Stinson. In 1978 I flew with my dad to the Oshkosh Air Show in the Cub we restored.
Love that comment “safest thing is to have your head clear!” I dont fly planes but even other activities like wood turning its so key to hold your focus, have the head in the job of the moment.. thanks for another thought provoking, great video.
After the loss of your engine, I was shocked/happy/excited to see you made it to Oshkosh! The last weekend 2023 was my first time ever able to attend!
Saw you guys at the B-25! 😃 From Minnesota, happy you were taken care of well after you had to declare your emergency with ATC!!!!

When working at a factory years ago, engineers would ask, how’d you figure that out? I’d respond, observation? As 5 were standing there stunned 😲 🙄 My Father was gifted also, his designs used to this day!

You are arguably one of the greatest pilots ever and you just said it was OK to not be a hotdog and in fact you encouraged people to fly safely. That was one of the most eloquent safety briefings I have ever heard.

I think it's so great that you have further developed your video production to be able to produce this series. You have such a story to tell through your work, your creations and your experiences with the amazing things you've built. I think it is very important you properly capture the story (like you've done here) so it can be properly shared for us all to enjoy and certainly learn from...there are not very many Mike Patey's walking or flying around today!

You are truly an inspiration Mike! You hit on something so important...as a 20+ year Globe Swift pilot, it is about talking newer pilots to a plane that is an absolute handful to fly out of something that may, and probably is above their head than challenging them before they are ready.
All I can say is "WOW"! Your approach to building and flying is absolutely first rate! Your mindset on how to hard wire your brain during an emergency is what lead to a very uneventful conclusion to a crisis, and dare I say, a VERY potentially fatal situation when you lost your engine a couple weeks ago. Happy building and flying Mike and looking forward to seeing more of Turbulence.

Mike, thank you for staying safe and surviving to tell us these stories. I’m glad you guys are ok. If I may, I would love to hear all the design and construction tricks you do to make these as safe as possible while reaching for all the performance goals. It’s so cool to see a Pratt engine . I retired from the Pratt campus in Lethbridge Alberta Canada. The 42 is a super tuff engine one of my favourites . It awesome to see that I could have been part of the persons that touched your engine on such a super high performance aircraft WOW . Please never stop.
The ending statements SHOULD be a wakeup call for many pilots and especially builders. My first flight of my self built Glasair experimental, only my wife/children and one close friend. This was fully intentional, i kept it a secret on the field. This kept the focus exactly where it needed to be.
Mike's engineering skills, along with patience and determination have become legendary. There's only one Mike Patey. :)

Engineering skills ? .. I'm sorry .. you're having a laugh right ? .. this aircraft is an accident waiting to happen. He's not finding ways to make things work .. he's finding ways to circumvent safety and it's going to bite him. The number of people who have used the phrase "stay safe" tells me that other commenters know that also.
So glad you got down in one piece. poor Draco wasn't so lucky. glad you are going to be able to make this baby good again.

I love to see how you started, compared to where you are today. Watching you make those compound cuts with an angle grinder and a hammer that you now cut using CNC is wonderful.

Mike is such a genuine, and likeable, person. It’s great that he is so responsible, and especially when you consider how extreme the aircraft he builds can be. It’s a shame that people like Ken Block, who I greatly admired, constantly pushed the law of averages until they eventually killed him. If anything was to happen to Mike, we can be sure it wasn’t through any lack of care on his part. Live a long and happy life Mike. We all love you.

I am always looking forward to your videos especially about your aircraft projects but first of all, I am glad that you are safe and sound after the incident with the engine failure on Turbulance. Watching your series about building Turbulance makes me wonder, my ultimate favourite design is the P51D North American Mustang. I can't help wondering what the end result would be if a brand new design approach with modern materials, avionics and a turboprop engine would be?
Surely something special since the original design was already a great success!!

Pretty sure a turboprop P51 exists, and I'm almost sure the US tried it out as a ground attack aircraft... Its out there on there on RUclips somewhere.
You guys are living the dream of many aerospace nerds. You should savour that. Off the wall thought, it would be great to do a trade on a contra rotating prop. Unfortunately I know of none that exist in this size, the one on the Griffin too big I guess. Next doubtful idea is to duct bleed air to blow on aileron to increase authority at low airspeed. The A42 has all the thermal margin to permit a lot of bleed air. This idea might not be silly. The expected benefit might be safer low speed handling, better climb and acceleration. To test a simple compressed air bottle could be set up.

Its so damn cool knowing Ive met this guy twice! Id give anything to be his helper or friend. Ive rebuilt my own airplane and do paint and fab work. These airplanes he builds are so amazing. Its so cool how he focuses on each and every build, so much dedicated focus.. I do wish to see Draco come back tho..

In case anyone is wondering I found some specs in an article: "Turbulence, a heavily modified Lancair Legacy and set a world record for the fastest single-engine turboprop with a speed of 438.02 mph. Turbulence has an 850-hp Pratt & Whitney PT6A-42 engine, custom five-blade MT propeller, and custom cowling, wings, and tail section. The entire fuselage is reinforced, and the airframe is 7 inches wider and 4 feet longer than a Legacy with a 32 percent larger rudder and tail."
Surrounding yourself with knowledgeable people that point out every possible problem or something you overlooked help make whatever you are working on better if you are humble enough to listen to them. We all have blind spots. Recognize that and you are already two steps ahead.
That my friend is called wisdom , for many it comes to late .My father was a Army paratrooper 101st and was also on the Army parachute jump team .
He began flying fixed wing and helicopters after the Army ,he also built in our garage two byplanes and later rebuilt a Hughes 300 later. He fought fired looked for oil across the Rocky Mountains using helicopters doin seismic surveys .
My father was careful and a very talented pilot I grew up around it all .Love you channel and your innovative outlook on aircraft thank you and good luck . Thankfully I lost my father couple years ago to heath complications not Aviation.

When you were teaching about making molds and using carbon fiber on Scrappy, I was glued to the screen. great video's, and we love you and your family.
There are 2048 hours per work year, the wife is the real hero here for letting you work double shifts. I dig your content.
That assumes 8 hours a day, 52 weeks a year.
NOT always the case - some jobs are less, some are MORE.
Military in particular, if you are on a ship you are COMMONLY on duty and officially working 12 hours a day (though part of that will usually include meals) - and that's in PEACETIME.

I took my 8yo son to his first (my second) EAA chapter pancake breakfast earlier this month and the guy we were sitting with invited us to tour his hanger. Soon as we walked in my son asked why the cowling was on the floor and proceeded to ask a bunch of other good questions as he walked around the Piper. Just as we were about to leave my son spied something in the corner and ran over and asked is this a mold for making another cowling? I think the guy was a little shocked at this point and asked how he knew so much about building planes. My son proudly pointed at his Scrappy shirt and said dad is learning to fly and we watch @MikePatey build airplanes on RUclips (and goes on to explain who Mike is rapidfire kid-style for the next minute or two). Thanks Mike & the whole Patey family & team for helping to educate and inspire the next generation!
