Scotty Kilmer Hi there, I have a quick question. My breaks went out suddenly the other day. My brother came and found it was the rear left brake that was leaking. So he replaced hose and put new cylinder on . After he bleeds them and puts everything together after he test drives it they go out again and he noticed the cylinder pops off. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated:)
I have a 2012 Nissan versa. When I press my brake pedal I have to pump it to get the car to stop, however the abs light isn't on to indicate it's the abs. When I just press it the car keeps rolling as if the brake didn't engage. What causes this?
Exactly what I said Tyler O'Neill I watched 45 minutes worth of videos of terrible footage and what not and then came across this dude. To the point....Job Done... 3 minutes...which is about what it took me to change that thing. Will definitely come back to him for future help!
Just picked up a 2003 Buick Century with 88k for 550 bucks that had barely any brake pressure. After looking around I found out that I need a wheel cylinder in the rear passenger tire. Will use this video to fix it. Thank you Scotty, you are awesome. Saved me a lot of money.
You make taking the drums off look super easy. That wasn't the case with my Dad's 2005 Silverado. You'd be sitting there for an hour trying to pound off the drums. Started to have tons of problems that truck, so he decided to trade it in and get a Toyota Tundra this year. Its been worth it so far. Love your videos Scotty, you have no idea how much it has helped me working on cars. If I get stuck on something..I can watch one of your videos and hell, even ask Scotty himself! Thanks!
Thats why I like Scotty Kilmet videos. They are stright to the point, don't show 2-3min how to remove tyre. It helped identify problems stright away with loosing break fluid. 10 out of 10
Thanks Scotty. I just came from some new brake shop I'd never been to before and they said since my drum was leaking fluid I'd need new shoes and even drums, he said the fluid was 'pressed into the drum metal, they're no good now'. Plus then you want the other side done you're always told. Bottom line was he quoted me over 750 to fix the problem. Immediately I got a headache and a voice inside my aching head said to go home and think about it. I did some research, watched your video, and instead spent a whopping 30 bucks on a new wheel cylinder, flared wrench, and brake cleaner. I know what the boy and I will be doing tomorrow! Saving a whole lot of money while getting a free suntan in the driveway. ;)
you don't need any stinking hoses. When the air is gone, it stops burping gas out the bleeder and sends pure liquid out. Been doing it that way 45 years, just put a drain pan under if you don't like the mess.
think i messed mine up last night. replacing mine tonight! thanks for the informative videos! the snip pliers made getting the springs off SO MUCH EASIER! replacing the shoes took about 2 hours before i watched this video. i removed and reattached the shoes 3-4 times last night in about an hour because of your video
i was a mechanic 4 many years,i watch you because you help people and give them honest advice, ive seen many dishonest mechanics in my day ,its nice 4 people 2 see the other side of the trade...thx scotty for all the help youve given people, ive been 2 sick 2 work on cars 4 awhile but i still love to give the free advice....
You saved me, Scotty. Did just as your vid shows. Only difference, I checked the line valve with a wrench before I bought a flare wrench. My car uses 12 mm, not 10. Other than that, no trouble.
Thank you Scotty!!! Your videos are the best on the internet - your audio quality is clear, the pacing of your instructions is great. You get right to the point while keeping your instructions clear and easy to follow, while including quick tips along the way that others don't think to mention. I'm checking your channel first from now on whenever I need guidance on a repair. I wasted so much time yesterday looking at very long, drawn-out videos on this particular project.
A SHAT load of money. Edit: Nevermind this comment. At the end he says he'll answer our questions as soon as he "gets back from his SHACK" not "as soon as he gets back from his SHAT." i thought it was an outhouse and mis heard so the joke isnt actually funny anymore
Hi there sir scotty kilmer..I just want to thank you for all the teachings on diy..now I became a mechanic on my own..I save a lot of money becoz of ur videos..thank you..
Dude, you are AWESOME! Straight to the point and no nonsense. Showed me what the issue was and what to do to fix it... I CAN NOT THANK YOU ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okitavio i believe mines were leaking at one point, but i couldn't get anything to come out when bleeding them. I just put 2 new ones and i had brake pressure again.
I'm waiting on the new wheel cylinder. Hopefully it'll go on smoothly and bleed like it should. Now I just need to clean all the mess the leaking brake fluid has made over who knows how many years (bought the car a month ago)
I greatly appreciate your video. Out of all the videos on here, yours was the best one. I just finished a rear brake job on my 06 HHR and it was a horrible experience. I don't ever want to go through that ever again. The worst part were the main springs. Took two days to finish. Thank you for all your help!
I really don't understand what you're asking. BUT, the e cable is not adjustable on that model, you have to rpelace the callipers in the back if you have rear disc brakes and problems with the emergency brakes not working
I use to turn wrenches too and i think you left an important fact out of the equation. When the bleeder screw is loose for any wheel, the brake pedal should NOT under any circumstance be pushed to the FLOOR! As you and i both know corrosion builds up inside the master cylinder behind the seals because there is hydralic pressure that does not let you go past a certain point inside the master. The brake pedal should only be pumped gently and only so far, and not floored!
Have a 91 ford truck, rear passenger break drums had fluid all over them and the break pedal is pretty much sinking to the floor. Pretty sure I got the culprit now! Thanks Scotty! 🙏
Wow Mister Kilmer!!! Your videos are the best. Quality and unique procedure of teaching. clear and simple. you saving me money. I appreciate your videos!!!
just type "power steering" in the search on the opening page of the scottykilmer channel on youtube and watch some of my power steering videos. You better pray it's not the rack leaking, cause they cost a TON on those german uber engineered vehicles.
hard to say, but easy to diagnose. Get some UV leak dye and put it in the engine oil, then see if the green dye shows up in the reservoir. If not, then put the dye in t he transmission fluid and see
most cars have adjusting bolts on the cable, either near the e brake arm as in toyotas, inside the car, or under the car at the back. The bolts are just tightened to shorted the cable and make it tighter
Get a prybar between the drum lip, preferably over the brake shoes, and the backing plate, and pull toward yourself while tapping around the edge of the drum with a sledge hammer. Usually caused by a rust lip around the edge of the drum catching on the brake shoes. Just went through this when replacing the drums and shoes on my rear brakes.
You're the man... mine is Renault Master Rear Back Brake Caliper. i thought it was brake pipe that was licking but it it's not will have to take the wheel off to find out for sure, then bleed it, as i have no brakes at all.
each auto techincian has his own personality etc........, as long has he gets the job done right and turns out good, thats all that matters becuase they all striveing to get the same results, and that is getin done right period. good work u guys scotty and Eric just to mention a few of my favorties.
Thanks for the video i thought my brake line was leaking but while changing rhe rear drums and bearings i found that instead it was the wheel cylinder your video showed me how to do it thank you
Thanks for the video, it really help me out to save some money as well since i have been looking for a job for a while. Your videos have helped dozen of times. Keep the video coming, always learning something new!
sure, just get a camera to take pictures so if you forget where stuff goes you can look at them. Replaced one of these before its a pretty easy job wish I had this video before hand this way I wouldnt have made a huge break fluid mess. Fiance wasnt too happy about the mess I made but hey her car can stop on a dime now. My next project is plug wires and plugs for my trans am I bought. Looks pretty easy but well see.
Hey thanks for this. I noticed fluid under my rear tire and looked up to see that is was brake fluid seeping out of the drum. Came in to do a search on the issue and yours was the first link identifying this problem. I can do this..
the majority of the times i do wheel cylinders the metal brake lines have to be replaced cause they are rotted so bad even looking at them the wrong way and they will brake. one little short gun i been doing is instead of disconnecting that spring, if its hard to get at ill take two ratchet straps and just slightly pull the shoes away in order to get the wheel cylinder out. that really comes in handy especially when you do those drums with that single giant metal spring that holds both shoes
Thanks Scotty. I don't have so big leak in rear brake cylinders but they are leaking. So i will have to do same job. Got some useful tips from your vid.
I seriously hope this is the issue I'm having. Thank you. I know this is old, but I've spent two hours reading over the same damn 15 or so pages in the Haynes Manuel, and it reads like I've got a degree in this shit. You managed to explain it in laymans terms without being too uninformative. Honestly, I skipped over this video and watched a few others because it was so short. I didn't think it could be that simple. Really hoping this is the issue and not the lines. Either way, thanks.
yeah, i hate reading so damn much, lol. i prefer to watch videos to learn things, than to pick up a book. its much easier for me. i think i might have adhd or something, lol.
Here in VT the steel nut rust welds itself to the line almost every time. I usually have to cut the line before spinning the nut, then flare in a new piece of line to the new wheel cylinder. Gotta love what salt does to cars.
Hi. I just changed my drivers rear side brake cylinder(2004 Saturn ION) that was leaking fluid. After I bleed the new cylinder do I have to bled all the brake cylinders or just the one I replaced?
Nice job Dennis Hopper (AKA Scotty Kilmer). Always appreciated. But why does everyone use a side-cutters for the springs? Has anyone heard of a Vice-Grip... Needle nose or regular? My Vice-Grips are indispensable for auto repairs.
Pretty good video, but I would recommend not using wire clippers when taking the spring on and off. That way you won't have to worry about squeezing too hard and snipping right through the spring. Use needle nose pliers instead.
I've heard they're prone to head gasket failure if you don't service the cooling system. Flush it often with the green stuff. The original red stuff is hard on gaskets I've heard, not sure.
Dear Scotty! My car was shaking while pressing the brakes! I replace the pads & rotors! My car shakes much less now, but it still shakes a little! I noticed on the passenger side, that a inner - Brake pad was more worn out the the outer! Do you think is the caliper pressing morevon the inner pad? Should I replace the calipers?

fluid pressed into the drum is a bunch of crap, you can easily clean it with spray brake cleaner, don't go there again
you don't need any stinking hoses. When the air is gone, it stops burping gas out the bleeder and sends pure liquid out. Been doing it that way 45 years, just put a drain pan under if you don't like the mess.

yes, I filled it up when I started working on it so I didn't forget. Best to always do that to keep air out of the lines
How long is that screwdriver?

he forget to used sand paper rub on the DRUM.
A SHAT load of money.

Hi there sir scotty kilmer..I just want to thank you for all the teachings on diy..now I became a mechanic on my own..I save a lot of money becoz of ur videos..thank you..
thanks scott, you wouldn't know how much people all over the globe benefit from your videos. Keep posting!

Thank you scotty! Had fluid coming out of the right rear. This video is gonna help me out like a lot of your videos have. Keep up the great work!
The fact that this was done on an old corolla, is awesome. Going to do this on my 78 corolla wagon. Thanks for the video.
I have the exact same problem on a 81 Corolla, rear driver side wheel cylinder is leaking, I guess it's not a coincidence, right?
Okitavio i believe mines were leaking at one point, but i couldn't get anything to come out when bleeding them. I just put 2 new ones and i had brake pressure again.

always worked with my father and never got a clear explanation about how this is done,
Thank you.
hey, this car is 32 years old, they come off easy cause it's lived its life in Texas, the land of little rust
Scotty Kilmer channel is the best thing that's happened to RUclips since "The Evolution of Dance"
I already did, Everyone's guide to buying a used car . BUT, people don't read anymore, but 24 million of em watched my videos so far.
Thank you Scotty I'm replacing the wheel cylinder on the back of my son-in-law's Ford Ranger
Still the best car repair RUclips channel.
I really don't understand what you're asking. BUT, the e cable is not adjustable on that model, you have to rpelace the callipers in the back if you have rear disc brakes and problems with the emergency brakes not working
Great video! I always change my wheel cylinders when I change my drums. The parts are cheap and easy to replace.
Best channel I have come across for cars! You keep me entertained.
I use to turn wrenches too and i think you left an important fact out of the equation.

great channel. not just how to fix, but know what I dont want to tackle on my own and better understand what a mechanic is recommending.
Man, I love this guy! It's exactly what I needed and the part is only like $12 for me.
out of all the videos ive watched..this is by far the most helpful...thankyou!
all depends on the compression ratio, higher ones like 11 to 1 need high test, but most use regular these days.
Scotty is an OG on RUclips
World's biggest dork. But the most helpful vid I've come across yet. Thank you so much.
how you liking this weather eh scotty? 32 one day and 90 the next....gimme a break!
Get a prybar between the drum lip, preferably over the brake shoes, and the backing plate, and pull toward yourself while tapping around the edge of the drum with a sledge hammer. Thanks Scotty, got me on the right track to swapping out the cylinder on my Mazda B2200
Best video I've seen on how to step by step a bit corky but great thanx dude ill be checking out more this is a how to for dummies.Great job.
Honestly the best and quickest quide no bullcrap just a quick simple but useful video what a pimp.
You're the man... mine is Renault Master Rear Back Brake Caliper. i thought it was brake pipe that was licking but it it's not will have to take the wheel off to find out for sure, then bleed it, as i have no brakes at all.

You just saved my life metaphorically sir. Much thanks to you.
Replaced one of these before its a pretty easy job wish I had this video before hand this way I wouldnt have made a huge break fluid mess. Good tips. I’d like to see more on your “shack”. That hand cut timber looks really cool.
the majority of the times i do wheel cylinders the metal brake lines have to be replaced cause they are rotted so bad even looking at them the wrong way and they will brake.
one little short gun i been doing is instead of disconnecting that spring, if its hard to get at ill take two ratchet straps and just slightly pull the shoes away in order to get the wheel cylinder out. that really comes in handy especially when you do those drums with that single giant metal spring that holds both shoes

I like this guy's energy
You made getting that spring off look so easy
This guy is crazy but videos are on point and make the job so easy....
Thanks a million
I replaced one of these on the right rear of my 1999 Plymouth Breeze Expresso. Needless to say, that did the trick.
some of them are excellant engines, such as old toyotas and volvos and jeeps
you can do it many different ways, I start the line first, then put the holding screws on next, then tighten the line
Thank you Scotty. You help me save money and taught me something.
Here in VT the steel nut rust welds itself to the line almost every time. I usually have to cut the line before spinning the nut, then flare in a new piece of line to the new wheel cylinder. Gotta love what salt does to cars.
this guy is a nut! but he's awesome. love your videos!
Travis Mellott do you live in Central PA ?
LMAO SO TRUE
Scotty, just wondering, if u replace one wheel cylinder , is it better to do both at the same time ?
depends on the car. The synthetic ones are best, they last the longest though
Hi. I just changed my drivers rear side brake cylinder(2004 Saturn ION) that was leaking fluid. After I bleed the new cylinder do I have to bled all the brake cylinders or just the one I replaced?
airbags are mainly for guys who haul stuff sometimes, and not at other times
no, air will only go into the one you're working on IF you don't let the reservoir go dry and pump air
call a body shop, they do that stuff all the time, I don't mess with body work
Nice job Dennis Hopper (AKA Scotty Kilmer). Always appreciated. But why does everyone use a side-cutters for the springs? Has anyone heard of a Vice-Grip... Needle nose or regular? My Vice-Grips are indispensable for auto repairs.
Scotty! Your channel is the best! Will try this soon!
ADJUST the brakes, if not tight in the back, it does that. They have a wheel to turn to adjust it until they just touch the drums
Thx! Now I know the difference between what I should be charged and what I will be charged! If I was younger, I'd do it myself.
You are the man mr. Kilmer
Good video. :) Where I live they use a lot of salt on the roads so we often have to deal with rusted out brake lines.
hi scotty how can I do drum brake adjustment?
Pretty good video, but I would recommend not using wire clippers when taking the spring on and off. That way you won't have to worry about squeezing too hard and snipping right through the spring. Use needle nose pliers instead.
I've heard they're prone to head gasket failure if you don't service the cooling system. Flush it often with the green stuff. The original red stuff is hard on gaskets I've heard, not sure.
either booster or master cylinder you got was a crapper.
Straight to the point. Love him.
Hey Scotty even though you only had to replace One side would you recommend Replacing both sides just so those are taken care of?
Nice video. I just replaced one of my wheel cylinders yesterday.
My 1992 GMC k1500 has had liquid on the tire and inter wheel, just started today, and it’s all over my drum, would you say it is the cylinder?
If I want to go with synthetic fluid can that be mixed with regular fluid or does it have to be completely flushed?
Thank you
