Eric, your old videos are so good for us guys that are relative newbies to car repair. Your new videos are more advanced and that is good too, but I love your old videos from 6 to 8 years back. So amazing. Like taking shop class at high school, but better.
Thanks for the info! Especially all of the tips throughout. Knowing that this can be accomplished without removing the shoes - super helpful when it's February in Chicago, every minute saved counts! The dealer wanted $400 to replace the cylinder and flush all of the lines, I was able to do it in my garage for $14 in less than 2 hours. Thanks for all you do!
AS an old video producer, I have to compliment you on an excellent instructional video. Well designed, well scripted, and well shot. Very professional delivery. You are good Eric. Thanks for all the great tips.
It's been years since I've done this, but about to again in the very near future. Just watched as a refresher, and so glad I did. Nice tips on dealing with a stuck brake line, and about using a line wrench.
A very big and warm THANK to you, Eric, for this excellent helpful tutorial on how to replace a damaged wheel cylinder! I really needed all your wise tips and advice to make the change of the wheel cylinder faultless! Wishing you all the best always! Best regards from Sweden! 💯👍💝
HI Eric, thank you very much for the pro tip! When I tried to replace the wheel cylinder today, I noticed that the brake line screw was very rusted, and the brake like seems to be turning a little bit even with a flare wrench, which of course I only bought because of this video too. So I stopped at once, and then unscrewed the wheel cylinder counterclockwise until it came off. Then when I installed the new one, I also spin the wheel cylinder clockwise on. Luckily it seems that only a small piece of paint at the end of the brake line broke off, which I will touch up with paint later after making sure there is no leak. Thank you so much!
thanks for the idea eric! ive done mine in less than an hour... it really save me some time not removing the brake shoe... if my mate who will helped me bleed the fluid could have come earlier, i could have finished earlier! thanks for sharing!
wish I had watched your video befor I did my job now my wheel cylinders are leaking and scotty kilmer and chrisfix didn't even go in depth like you did, you definitely deserve more subscribers.
Jeeze I wish I saw this video last week. Broke the break line trying to get it out of the cylinder. Great advice here. It's the little tips that that would have saved me time and made my language more tame. Thanks ETCG!
Thanks for the tip on spinning the cylinder off the brake line. That metal nut wasn't budging without likely busting so I removed the fasteners and bleeder, held the brake line and spun 'er off. The the tip saved me from "hating life"!
Thank you for your help! You put together a very clear and complete video. Much appreciated and I know that takes a lot of focus and work on your part besides doing the work.
My ghetto skills came in handy when I came up with the brilliant idea while looking for a bolt, I cut up a piece of wood instead and used that to jam between the shoes. Worked perfectly to space out the brake cylinder. Of course hats of to you for showing me how to deal with the pipe, I end up rotating the cylinder as suggested and a job well done. I wish I read the comments though as people suggested blow torch and insta cool down to shock lose the fitting. It's ok I think I want to redo all the lines anyway and fit that hydo wand
You must be the one with an ego to have put me down in the first place. This man helps people, it is excellent that he saves people money, appreciating people for helping others does not hurt.
This was very helpful Eric. One of my rear wheel cylinders was totally blown (fluid everywhere) and the other was starting to leak. I guess it took 28 years for a brake problem to arise in my Camry.
Hello first off thank you for great videos and showing the no spill funnel on one of your videos I purchased one it works great second I have never haad much trouble changing wheel cylinders except on my father in laws 2001 dodge ram laramie I cant seem to get the drums off any recommendations thank you
Hey Eric just a quick tip pull both the drum cases off and pull the hand brake on that will give you so much room you'll just pull the cylinder straight out of there I know some people hate this idea but it's fine there is nothing wrong with it and in my countless years of experience iv never had or seen a problem with it and I teach this method to all of my apprentices
Bad As dude, thank you thank you for the tip on a siezed fitting. I was ready to cut the tubing and reflare. Question do I install the new one the same way?
Thanks: 2 Questions: 1. Do you always replace or do you sometimes recondition? 2: What about putting grease or something similar on nuts to prevent rust?
Have always gone straight to ChrisFix channel when I needed to fix something. He had a video on this, but his vehicle was so different that I couldn't figure it out. The vehicle you used here is exactly the same and you described what you were doing so well. Consider me subscribed!
It might be laid out different, but it's still the same concept. One nut holds the brake line to the cylinder, 2 bolts hold the cylinder to the brake flange.
so, I just read up on turbo sockets, since im replacing the line anyway, I should just cut it off, then attach the turbo socket and hope like hell it'll break free??? how does that sound??? tips anyone?
Nice, glad I found this as I just discovered one leaking on my wife' 96 Corolla after having to add brake fluid every couple of weeks for a few months now (finally got under the back of the car last night to have a looksie after changing the oil.). I'm sure this car is pretty much the same process as our car. Saw a complete drum brake kit on Rockauto with new drums, shoes, wheel cylinders, and all the various clips and springs, for under $80. Not sure if I should get that or not. I don't recall the rear brakes ever being serviced, not in the 9 years I've known my wife, and the car has 267K miles on it.
Great video! I'm trying to replace the brake cylinders on my 91 F250. I purchased what is listed as the approved driver and passenger side replacement cylinders for the vehicle. However when I went to install the new cylinder on the driver side (all shoes, springs, and brackets removed as well), I noticed that when the cylinder is seated into its position, the dust shields are squeezed somewhat on both ends of the cylinder against the back plate. They don't appear to be free from "interference" as yours seems to be in the video. Any thoughts? Am I missing a spacer? Do I need to retrofit a different model cylinder? Much appreciated.
Eric, but if your brake line is spinning with the nut, alternatively is to pull out-forward the wheel cylinder a bit (while the line is still connected to it with the nut) and spin the entire wheel cylinder off. Do I then need to take off completely the brake shoes system to get enough clearance for this action?
Hey Eric , great videos ,Thanks! You got a video on cylinder rebuild? I know you might think useless just buy another. But I'm in another country and finding the parts are sometimes impossible so I would rather repair rebuild.
@EricTheCarGuy hello eric , nice of u 2 make all these uploads and they r great .i just have this problem watching the hoses clamped , i know it prob havent made eny diff in years but i have worked in production on hydra lines and they can get the steel inside to warp and get faulty . stay dirty..
hi good video i like the long nose pliers with hoses on as the clamps.do you change both cylinders as this is what i always do, as the other side is now the weaker one and likely to leak soon.
Hey mate, love all the video i've got a problem my pas side to you being drivers side my front drivers side brake isn't wearing even on the disk the top isn't worn but the bottom is wearing what would this be? please help fast going for road worthy in 2days
mine stripped right out even with that proper brake tool & wouldn't budge off cylinder so have to replace that medal line aswell...been trying find vids with tips how best form new line to match old.
awesome way to do videos you are the best i`m a mechanic my self and i always look all your videos because this is what i do an like ,thumbs up great tips for novices
Great tips...Your tip on screwing the cylinder off of the end of the brake line when the fitting and brake line are rusted together was spot on. One of the two was rusted together and your tip worked perfectly. Greg
I've watched three of these videos now, the little tips such as using a flare spanner, taking off the bleed valve and spinning the cylinder off the line are what makes this video superior. great job!
hi, Eric i replaced the wheel cylinder on the rear right (passenger side). do i now need to bleed the air out of Only that one tire OR all 4 tires to remove the air? thanks.
I just realized my rear wheel cylinder is slightly leaking. would this be something that needs to be addressed immediately? I am about 900 km from home right now
The bolt on the (1997 Accord) Brake Power Booster broke while I was tightning the nut during a brake master cylinder replacement. Do I need to replace the entire Brake Power Booster or can I just replace the bolt on the Brake Power Booster ?
I needed to replace the brake line that runs to the back of the wheel cylinder, just that little foot of line sprung a leak right next to the nut, and my luck the damn thing was rusted to ****, I used pb blaster, let it sit, then used a line wrench to attempt to separate the line and the damn thing still stripped, crap, I hate life, now what do I do??? any ideas?
Is it one or two of them (crush washers)? I found just one of them on the Banjo Bolt of the old cylinder, but in the pack for a new set there are two of them. Where does the second go? 2001 Saturn SL2.
I have two questions for you... One: I have a rear wheel drive car, and when my car is in park (lifted on the jack stand) the wheel doesn't move like you showed me (us) to check the adjustment on the drums. Is it safe to take the car out of park if only the rear wheel is off the ground? I only have two stands, would it be safer to put both rear wheels off the ground?
Eric can u plz tell your trick to getting old wheel cylinders bolt closest to the front off the car off? U can barley fit a wrench in there.. its a 92civic and those bolts are so rusty I've sprayed a crap load of penetrating oil tried heat and nothing I got the one closest to the back off with a socket but can't get a socket in by the front one! Can't get the brake line off either but hoping to turn that off when I get the cylinder off if I do!!!!lol
Thanks for the video, waiting so long for it lol.... you know why? my rear drum brake also leak same as the video but not to much.. I just top up it when the master cylinder below MAX. Will try the tips dirty my hands. Thanks again Eric the car guy :) One more thing, been long time you never reply question on your youtube video.

Hey bro I want to thank you for this video. Saved me a lot at a time my family didn't have it and needed our car fixed. Thanks again.

I dont know how anyone could do a better instruction video. Eric is a 5 star presenter.
It's been years since I've done this, but about to again in the very near future. Just watched as a refresher, and so glad I did. Nice tips on dealing with a stuck brake line, and about using a line wrench.

You remind me about my dad and how he taught me. Nice to watch your vids even when I know what to do, just for the nostalgia.
Thank you for your help! You put together a very clear and complete video. Much appreciated and I know that takes a lot of focus and work on your part besides doing the work.
Very clear instructions. Thanks for your help. This video enabled me to tackle this job myself and saved me $80.00.
As usual thanks for all the experience tips along with the process. Keeps me watching.

You know what Eric as soon as the video starts I already know I'm going to like it, so I just hit the like button anyway.
easily the best tutorial vids on youtube!
Very informative and great delivery!
awesome video, thanks really helping out a noob at this break stuff. Love actually seeing you do the work makes it easier to learn.

Great job Eric!
Thanks: 2 Questions: 1. Do you always replace or do you sometimes recondition? 2: What about putting grease or something similar on nuts to prevent rust?
perfect! I'm about to do this to both rears on an 85 Vanagon tomorrow! thanks for the walkthrough.
Thank You for the great information you supply us with it's a great help.

Excellent video 👍🙌 I always did it the hard way.
Another thoughtful review, with lots of advice when things go wrong. Great advice to avoid going there in the first place.
Thank you, i didnt think i was mad to appreciate other peoples efforts for us :-)

You are the best mechanic on RUclips. If the brake bleeder valve snaps off on the front calipers then the calipers have to be replaced right?
Do you know the size of that steel line that runs into back of the wheel cylinder? is that just standard 3/16 brake line?
Will you do a "replacing rusty brake line" vide?
Do I need to go through all the bleeding process, or is it just enought to bleed it out gravitationally?
This guy rocks, so helpful
mine stripped right out even with that proper brake tool & wouldn't budge off cylinder so have to replace that medal line aswell...been trying find vids with tips how best form new line to match old.
You are the man Eric!!

Would you recommended using heat on the old wheel cylinder when you have problems removing the line?
Will brake cleaner expand the rubber boots on the wheel cylinder or any grommets/seals in general?
Wow, tons easier than I thought it would be. I paid to have this done 3 years ago, if I had known I would have definitely done it myself.
Eric, flushing the brake fluid does that keep the crud out to prevent leaks ?
Good stuff, Thanks for all the tips.
Another awesome video.
hi, Eric i replaced the wheel cylinder on the rear right (passenger side). do i now need to bleed the air out of Only that one tire OR all 4 tires to remove the air? thanks.
I just realized my rear wheel cylinder is slightly leaking. would this be something that needs to be addressed immediately? I am about 900 km from home right now
my rear brakes are not drum style but a disc just like the front ones. do these have a cylinder at all? thanks!
Thanks for the input. I'm a little hesitant to take both wheels off the ground for some reason. I guess I should give it a go though.
Thanks for the tip on adjusting the shoes. I really did not want to pull the shoes back out.
Q- if you have to spin the old cylinder off, how do you spin or tighten the new one on?
The bolt on the (1997 Accord) Brake Power Booster broke while I was tightning the nut during a brake master cylinder replacement. Do I need to replace the entire Brake Power Booster or can I just replace the bolt on the Brake Power Booster ?

Great video, helped me to replace mine!
Thanks
since we're getting technical MikeTheITGuy, its a DOUBLE FLARE or ISO fitting.... Feel better?
Do I have to use a tube wrench if there is no rust round?
good thorough info
I have two questions for you...

woop woop!! that's me this weekend 👍
Do I have to bleed all four wheels after replacing one brake wheel cylinder?
Coming soon.
Will leaking wheel cylinders cause peddle to go to the floor, or is it always master cylinder?? I have 92 cutlass ciera. Thnx.
Eric, you the man! Thank you for these video's.There great. Too bad you don't do 2 cycle marine engines.
Excellent tutorial as allways :-)
Eric can u plz tell your trick to getting old wheel cylinders bolt closest to the front off the car off? When i saw the email i thought what is a Vheel Cylinder and low and behold you greeted me with a german accent.
I was replacing brake lines on my car, Rounded the corners of the line nuts, vice grip pliers were a good friend that day.
Good tips & know how Eric.. Keep up the good fight..
very helpfull video thank you!
Thanks for the video, waiting so long for it lol.... you know why? my rear drum brake also leak same as the video but not to much.. I just top up it when the master cylinder below MAX. Will try the tips dirty my hands. Thanks again Eric the car guy :)
One more thing, been long time you never reply question on your youtube video.
