Crank Bolt Removal on Toyota Sienna. No special tools!

  • Toyota Crankshaft Bolt Removal, 4 different methods tried, with the last one being successful. I did not want to use the starter bump method, because even though you can loosen the bolt, you still have no way to tighten it again to the correct torque!
    (I didn't have a strong impact or an air-driven impact, but this video is aimed at people with somewhat basic tools)

    I admire your ingenuity! I just replaced a timing cover seal on my 05 Camry. I have a corded harbor freight impact wrench I must have bought for under $40 and their impact sockets, for changing my snow tires. Rattled the bolt right out. Then I have a set of torque sticks I bought from them. I used the 100ft-lbs one to run it back on and called it a day. Saves me time having to charge my compressor for my pneumatic wrench. I’m a former Toyota mechanic by trade so I have Snap-on, Matco, Craftsman tools and I use the cheap tools even more sometimes 😂
    My point being if you’re a DIY’r, harbor freight can be a fantastic resource. It’ll save you SO headache too. 😉

      Hi Jedi... I tried a Harbor Freight electric impact and a HF air impact. Neither worked. Then I bought HF's "Earthquake" air impact (around 600 ft/lbs)... It zipped the bolt off like it was finger tight!

      @@robertbigler7743 great! Just don’t use it to put it back on. Tighten gently and to the exact torque spec🙃

    Thank you for the demonstration! I really like how you propped up the end of the breaker bar on a jack!

      Hi Dave, it helps to keep your socket and extension level with the bolt. And it is so easy to get to the right height!

    So the chain has more grip on the pulley than the belt....

    • @Pen_Pusher
      @Pen_Pusher  3 года назад +3

      Yes, much more. When I did the cam sprockets I decided to put a piece of old belt between the chain and the metal. It worked perfectly!

    • @Pen_Pusher

      I used a 24 inch breaker bar, with a wider 36 inch pipe slipped over it. :)

    You damaged the ribs of the pulley with that chain.

    • @Pen_Pusher
      @Pen_Pusher  3 года назад +5

      The ribs are pretty sturdy. I have done this on two vehicles. No marks on one and two small marks to clean up on the other. I protected the crank pulleys with pieces of old drive belts. It worked perfectly!

    Just buy a battery 1/2 impact , or borrow. Everybody got one.

    • @Pen_Pusher
      @Pen_Pusher  9 месяцев назад

      You may be lucky, but many 1/2 inch impacts are not able to loosen that crank bolt. Crank bolts and axle nuts can be vey stubborn!

      @@Pen_Pusher Get a good powerful gun. Maybe need an air one. I’ve cranked the starter before on a 4cyl using a breaker bar. That works but seems a bit “scary” lol.

    • @Pen_Pusher
      @Pen_Pusher  9 месяцев назад

      @@cndvd Yes, a good air gun will do the job. The problem with using a breaker bar to loosen it is that you still need something to help when you want to tighten it again!

    • @cndvd
      @cndvd 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@Pen_Pusher Yes that’s right got to torque it. I’ve jammed a large screwdriver in there to loosen and tighten it, but need to be able to insert it in and lock in in there. The wheel bearing I’ve use a very long pipe over a breaker bar, always broke loose. My Ridgid impact so far worked, but the newer ones are even stronger for the crank bolt. Still surprised it worked.
