Liverpool 4-0 Manchester United 1990-91 (Beardsley hat-trick)

  • One of Peter Beardsley's finest hours in a glittering career. This was the last Liverpool hat-trick against their arch rivals until Dirk Kuyt broke the sequence in March 2011. A hugely entertaining game between the reigning champions and the FA Cup holders, the scoreline to which doesn't reflect the pattern of play. In the commentary box, Brian Moore and Lawrie McMenemy.

Incredible really how quickly the decline set in. They started the season like a train and when Arsenal had those points deducted after the Old Trafford brawl you couldn't back them with any money. McMahon, Beardsley, and Steve Staunton were gone 12 months later (Houghton left the following year after a wonderful season) and a number of others (Whelan, Barnes) would suffer long term injuries. Sure, Souness broke up the team far too quickly but the signs were there before he arrived. Their time was simply up.

There's just something about this era of football, there's more energy, more passion, more inspiration and improvisation compared to today's football. Everything now, although technically phenomenal (and players fitness levels through the roof) it's now all very robotic and seems like almost every goal is a simulation being played out by an advanced algorithm. 80's and particularly 90's football just seemed to have the same class as today but much more organic and creative gusto with passion in every player thats undeniable. Damn i miss these golden years.

However, this is one thing I like a lot about Klopp. He has a lot of young British talent in his squad. In all of his Liverpool squads since 2015, half of the players are British. Curtis Jones coming through, Alexander Arnold established, Rhys Williams developing. The one thing I never liked about Man City under Pep is he doesn't bring in enough British players into his squads.

Liverpool during the 1980s through to the early 1990s were like the Brazil of the UK in how they played. Look at 5:43-5:59. Alex Ferguson in his interview with Neville recently said that he used to be so impressed by Liverpool and their training and it inspired him in his managerial approach.
