Denis Irwin was pure world class. Only Man U fans and other fans from that era would appreciate his skills. A quiet hard competitor who was not vocal. Tough without being demonstrative. Just got on with his job. Equally excellent at both attacking and defending. An ideal wing back before the phrase was even coined. Never got the global recognition he deserved. If he was Spanish,French Italian they would be salivating over him. His free kick goal against Liverpool at Anfield in January 1995 stands out because not one Utd player was in the box or near the Liverpool wall which shows the confidence his teammates had in him. His goal against Wimbledon at Sellhurst Park in a FA Cup round when Utd were wearing the green and yellow kit was brilliant. Fergie stated he was his best signing pound for pound.

On a Sunday back in the late 70s/early 80s, I played for Eversley. Gus Caeser of Arsenal was our Centre Half, I was Centre Forward. Alas, We lost three finals to Sheringham's Beaumont - we never beat them bar a 5-aside competition which we won. I still have a picture taken from the touchline at one of the finals of me in the centre circle and Teddy Sheringham also before the game. Although he is in distance, you can recognise it is Sheringham by his gait. Sheringham has gotten it wrong about Des Walker, He played Centre Midfield for Enfield Rangers whom we also used to play. Des Walker went to Ambrose Fleming school in Enfield Highway. At the Enfield Athletics track, at the age of 15, I ran against Des Walker in the 400 metres. He was in the lane outside me. He took off like the wind, winning the race in 56 seconds. I was a distance behind finishing in 62 seconds. Memories.

You get so many teams selected by professional footballers that totally lack balance and have a bunch of attacking midfielders in central midfield and not much synergy. This team is nothing like that.
It's perfectly balanced with lots of steel in midfield without really taking away from the necessary creativity. The fullbacks are both attacking ones and they'd offer width to make up for the narrow attack. Zidane somewhat drifted more to the left at times, particularly for Juve so he's actually a nice fit wider in this kind of setup.
The tactic is also quite clear - let those AMs get on the ball and use their obvious creative skills to pick a pass to Ronaldo, who is great at picking the right space to run into. Just a very good team and it's nicely planned on the whole.

Keane and Viera in midfield by simple logic cant be better than Keane and Scholes. Keane and Scholes won everything. Theyre actually proven at the highest possible level. And Scholes was better than Viera, as even fellow Frenchman Henry insists. Im not saying Viera wasnt very good at what he did. But saying Keane and Viera are the best possible is like saying theres nothing better than a glass of beer and a glass of juice. Yes there is: a glass of beer and another glass of beer.
