I love how he has so much respect for Ruud. "When you don't score or don't win a game, it was not his fault, it was ours." Perfectly summarises how clinical Ruud was at United.
As a Liverpool fan I never thought I would say this but I LOVE KEANO. He is the kinda guy you would want on your end no matter what the situation. Humility, loyalty, a winning attitude... a little mischief. What a guy.
The point of the video and difficulty in choosing is that you could pick three or four great teams from that lot. There is literally nobody in the current side I'd want to even have as a sub. It's not just the playing ability, it's the character and mentality that's equally important. That's what the current lot lack.
Roy was made out to be a cantankerous, grumpy, lonely man when he was at United but you can tell he is far from it. He is loyal to a fault, funny and knowledgable but one thing he wants is people to have the same winning mentality as him which was what he learnt from Clough and Fergie. 100% the greatest PL captain and thats coming from a Liverpool season ticket holder.
Oooh I’d agree however, I couldn’t split him and Gerrard. Gerrard is the man - a one club man, great captain/leader - a better player than Keane as well. By the neutral Gerrard is considered the greatest, I believe. Maybe you say Keane cos you don’t want to seem biased towards Liverpool. Maybe Keane the bigger captain, the bigger ‘born winner’ but Gerrard was better at everything on the pitch, a proper box to box midfielder... some of his tackles, and his goals - oh boy! And Gerrard was a one club man - you can’t put a price on that these days. 👍

@@RedScareClair honestly he wouldn’t last five minutes in there. Pretty sure he’d break something or tear his hair out at how much the games changed and more importantly the players have from his era.
Good to hear them talk about Ince. All the other famous midfielders were beloved at one club, so doesn’t get the nostalgia the Gerrards, Scholess, Lampards and so on do. But Ince was such a great player. Amazed to see Keane pick him ahead of Scholes, who is one of my absolute heroes, but pleased too to see him respected. And also how he just casually compared Trent Alexander Arnold and Beckham! Not wrong either, but just shows how the game has changed.
I can’t get over Steve Bruce scoring 52 goals as a defender that’s just insane,he’s got more goals than some of the midfielders & strikers on those lists 😂😂😂 what a ledge !!!
I loved watching Steve Bruce play for United... he was a brilliant CB and provided some excellent goals. He is also a wonderful human being; ok i get that he isn't the best manager out there, but he gets a lot of hate. If Keane had picked him in his team instead of Pallister [and Rio] I would not have been that surprised either.
I love listening to Roy talking about the old United ,he oozes love and respect and passion for all those great great players and amazing times . I so miss those phenominal days .
Always enthralling listening to Roy speak about his team mates… he created a culture at Man U that will never be repeated, excellence through honesty of effort and application of talent and standards, standards, standards from top to bottom … it’s heartbreaking to think he will never have a role there again he embodies everything that the club stood for .. God Bless You Roy thank you for your career with Man U and Ireland truly phenomenal
The thing is he should be involved with the club, when the glaziers go bring him in in some form, he wouldn't put up with that crappy ass team and 100% of the fans would love it
I dont know why alot of people overlook the strike partnership of Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke, but they decimated defenses when they played together. I know they didnt last very long together, but at their peak no other strike partnership came close I think.
Van Nistelrooy had the most aesthetically pleasing finishing I've ever seen. Immediate, deadly. Unfortunately the team he went into had a bit of trouble, for one reason or the other. He may not have had quite the technique of Lewandowski or Benzema, nor a team behind him that harmonized as well at the time as Bayern and REal do now, but his strikes and instinct would be unrivaled even today.
People said he was one-dimensional. Absolute nonsense. I'll never forget Basel away when he scored from the goal line. Incredible player. Nobody in the history of Manchester United has scored as many as quickly as Ruud. And that after a career threatening injury if not two but my memory is hazy.
I always thought the problem Utd had during the Ruud era was that the team was over-reliant on him. There were too many games where - if Ruud was having a harder day of it - Utd would drop points because they didn't have a plan B.
I'm a Liverpool fan,but I could listen to Keane all day. I'd call him a stubborn introvert, (bit like myself lol)...but he's genuine, what you see is what you get..seems a top bloke. Great to see him having a bit of fun at the end too!.
I think that's what he was alluding to with Beckham vs Lingard/Pogba etc that for all the deals and commercials etc, Beckham was the consumate professional. Obviously we don't know the full extent of how Lingard/Pogba etc are behind the scenes but it's the perception that their social media gives off and the way they play in games.
Glad to see Rooney got the credit he deserves from Roy. Rooney’s usually rated highly, but still not highly enough sometimes. He was incredible throughout his time at United.
@@ClarkKent-zm3qz I agree. He is one of the most complete players that i've ever seen. I prefer him to Lewandowskis of this world who only know to score tap-ins .
I sometimes think that he never truly reached his potential after his injuries and it can sometimes distract you from how good of a player he actually was. Sometimes I see his highlight reels and it just reminds me what a beast he was. Skinhead era Rooney was an absolute monster
I promise you if you find any full game on RUclips from 2008 onwards and watch Rooney closely, you'll see an absolute shambles of a player who would track back like a demon and score a header or tap in.
Great comments about Ince. Hell of a player. Hell of a competitor. Massive big game performer. A fighter and a winner. Don’t underestimate Incy. He picks on class and delivery. Same with Pallister- boss of a player.

@@theboxingnetwork3639 Rush goalie. Two at the back, three in the middle, four up front, one's gone home for his tea. Beans on toast? Possibly, don't quote me on that. Marvellous.
Roy talked about the character the most and football being priority irrespective of what else was happening around those players. At that time (even today) if you are at United, you definitely have players with skills and talent. It is how they keep their hunger for Trophies high and take responsibility when the game is not going their way. Some of the current squad players won't put effort and drown easily in negative emotions even when the game is a draw. Maybe the low desire for glory due to hefty pay-check and long contracts made them think they can't be disposed of for putting less shift. Also, As Roy pointed out most of the players at his time at United were self-motivated for improvement rather than coaches asking them every day to train hard or work out the issues themselves. They just follow the training module and when something comes out of the syllabus, they choke. I think the brilliant character is the most distinct feature of any big team that separates them from other teams because in terms of raw quality United had brilliant players then and even now but that mentality in the squad is missing.
Roy is the type of man you would want by your side all life. 🥺 What a brilliant character and football player!! The fact that he always refers to the pitch as trenches tell you all you need to know about how he felt about the game, his team and his teammates.
Probably GK: David De Gea, who he called the most overrated keeper RB: Denis Irwin CB: Denis Irwin CB: Denis Irwin LB: Denis Irwin RM: Denis Irwin CM: Fred CM: Roy Keane LM: Ryan Giggs ST: Denis Irwin ST: Denis Irwin
Van Nistelrooy came in after Schmeichel and Stam left which left United far more vulnerable at the back with Barthez and also Blanc was on his last legs. Had prime peter and jaap still been there then Ruud would have won even more trophies.
I agree with you. That's the same thing I thought. Nistelrooy came into a team in transition. Certain rocks were either crumbling or gone, especially Peter & Jaap.
Wow. 13:00-13:38 plain and simple Professionalism and understanding for a game. If someone goes out of position to benefit The team, you cover for him. They didnt even train it, just plain chemistry and common sense.. Dont rush yourself in into The box just cause you dont wanna miss out. SO Many curling kids on The pitch could learn from this these days. Stay legendary Keane.
I followed United home and away during Keanes era and Ince was an immense player. some games he was just incredible. Pallister is arguably the most underrated centre half in english history. Great picks from Keano. Becks got criticism from people who didnt watch football. if you did watch him you would see a player of great courage, as hard a worker as anyone & bled red white and black. Top man Becks.
Such a badass player Keano was, playing with a not over my dead body mentality, gosh, really miss the boss on the pitch these days. Great respect for this Irishman, am saying this as a Liverpool F.C. fan.🇮🇪👏😊
Loved this. He was happy to give praise, and came across authentic and frank, and snippets of humour. Great blend. My ideal football captain. Never change, Roy!
Paul Ince was actually as well-rounded a midfielder as you could wish for. He could even dribble. Far from just a holding player and he held his own in Italy when it still really meant a lot. Was happy when he came to LFC and he did well for us.
Good day for any RONNIE fans out their today One Ronnie scores to help United win The other Ronnie makes history by winning snooker championship Both are unstoppable and goats of their sport
Brilliant show! Can listen to Roy all day! He commands respect totally but he also has a great personality and is fun to listen to. What a team he chose! Not one player from todays UTD would even be on the bench of those mighty Utd teams.
Tevez-Ronnie-wayne. It feels odd to think we had that upfront. Glad I started watching as a 11 year old in 2004, to see glory years, and now have to pay my dues by sticking with this team we have got at our beloved club.
As a Man Utd Fan, i really respect the Liverpool fans who call it like it is and say how good Keano is, and still is, they same way i have no problem in calling Gerrard a legend. Thats being a good character with respect.
Well said m8 that is spoken as a true football fan, being loyal to your team is admirable but not being bias against great players despite any rivalry shows class.
Liverpool fan but Jaap Stam for how short a stay he had in England had the biggest impact. Probably the best we've ever seen. Similar to Van Dijk now and before you get on me, Gary Neville himself had compared the two many times. Just make defending look a piece of cake and utterly demoralise attackers.
agreed - have to say im surprised he left out Scholes, he was pretty pivotal for them so many times. I fully understand Ince he was a superstar at the time, but Scholes body of work at united is outstanding
Yep, I remember the season after Ronny left, people immediately thought he'd be lost without him, but he was absolutely banging goals in without Ronaldo, even if we didn't win the title.
As a Liverpool fan, Roy Keane was a player I admired and enjoyed Watchung his style as he mentioned in his interview speaking about Robo, he filled those shoes pretty well. As for the best 11 you guys pressurized him to do, SCARY to to face with Keane' s exclusion from the 11, top quality. Thanks for the entertainment.
Yeah Rio, Scholes, Cantona and Van Nistelrooy are the ones who can probably feel annoyed. It’s impossible when you’ve played with this many brilliant players though
Liverpool fan. To be honest, from that list of midfielders especially, you can never have a terrible midfield. You can rotate it each week. So when he said Robson and Ince, I wasn't really surprised. They were both brilliant players.
Not really sure cantona or Van nisterooy can be annoyed here. Ronaldo is a top 2 player of all time and Rooney is the top scorer and has a serious shout for being the clubs greatest ever player.
unfortunately for them Rooney and Ronaldo pick themselves out of that list. Just goes to how what amazing forwards and in general players United have had in the prem alone.
I am Liverpool through and through, but if I can put my football loyalties and bias aside, Keane has always been my top 3 favourite players of all time. Even when he was playing, I'd admire and envy his qualities; the tenacity, speaks his mind, winning mentality, screams at teammates. Now as a pundit, every time I see him on the panel/interviews with Gary, I click. I enjoy his honesty even more. You know he's got "oldschool class" when he keeps mentioning about, "good family background, good character".
I completely agree with you; of course, when United play Liverpool or another big rival, I just want us to win. But today, the reality is your team is soooo much better in every department, and have really wonderful players. I don't hate them, and I will be supporting them in the CL final!
3-4-3 formation Van Der Sar Stam - Ferdinand - Vidic Neville - Keane - Scholes - Irwin Ronaldo - Van Nistelrooy - Giggs I didn't go with Schmeichel because I think Van Der Sar will be more comfortable with this defense. He knows Stam from his time with the Dutch team and had great success with Rio and Vidic in their prime's. Rio is a sweeper in this formation and expected to start attacks from defense - like he did earlier in his career, especially at Leeds. On the counter, the wing backs will also be expected to contribute. Neville and Irwin have the stamina, pace, attacking and defensive attributes to do this. I expect one will always be in defense, meaning there will be 5 attackers and 5 defenders at any one time, with Keane shielding the back 3 as a defensive mid. If the team needs it, he can also contribute going forward, he was comfortable on the ball, could spot a pass and is able to shoot from distance. In attack there hasn't been a better 10 than Scholes, his long range shooting ability, technique and passing are second to none. Giggs and Ronaldo will bring the speed on and off the ball. Irwin, Giggs and Ronaldo can also take free kicks whilst the wing backs and Giggs can also cross. With the 3 CBs, Keane, RVN and Ronaldo there's a huge arial threat at set pieces as well. These factors combine to mean Beckham can be replaced to a large degree (plus he's not as effective in a 3-4-3). Finally, as there's only one centre forward, i've gone with the best goal scorer imo. Rooney and Cantona get honourable mentions but I don't think anyone was a specialist and as consistent in that department as much as Ruud (besides CR7).
I remember when I was young the man Utd back 4 Paul Parker, Steve Bruce, Gary Pallister and Irwin, with Peter at the back probably the best defense man Utd ever had playing together at the same time. In those days it was so much more about work rate, grit and determination. Those guys had it in bucket loads
Great assessment of some serious talent he played with. But I just can't picture a United best XI without Scholesy! He was at the heart of so much of United's success. 11 league titles to Ince's 2.. 2 Champion's League titles to Ince's 0. All these titles he was right there in the middle of the field each and every week controlling the tempo. Always in the discussion of the best Premier League midfielder of all time with Lamps and Gerrard. Ince to me doesn't make sense. I was very surprised by Keane leaving him out
Scholes will be remembered as a great creative player but horrendous in defence and tackling and that’s why he was often dropped for Butt and Park in big games. Roy likes an all round player and Scholes was not that. I think people forget just how good Ince was. He was a complete player, Scholes wasn’t.
Scholes couldn't tackle to save his life.... Byran Robson, Roy Keane and Paul Ince could do it all...tackle pass and score...would choose any of them before Paul....but Scholes was great as well.
@@kevinheath7588, Scholes didn't need to tackle... but when he did, he was dirty and left a mark on the player. That was a great discussion. All those players were up there and the Van Nistelrooy was a definite “how can he be left out” moment. Up there with the very best forwards for me
His blunt honesty is brilliant 😄 he could of took the easy way and chose the players solely off of stats, but his choices entailed the whole player, not just their skills, but everything they encompass on and off the pitch…and that’s what made him a great captain.
@@Lauren_MUFC16 I get your point. In my reply I left out the word "solely" . My own opinion, of course, with which anyone is entitled to disagree if they so wish.

Kind of which he picked himself though haha

I love how he has so much respect for Ruud. "When you don't score or don't win a game, it was not his fault, it was ours." Perfectly summarises how clinical Ruud was at United.
At 1:20 Keane is trying so hard to hold back from saying "that's their job", you can see the anguish in his face
You can tell what he’s thinking there 😂
And minutes later he says it anyway. Legend.

Well said buddy, United fan here.
Let's all declare which football teams we support...
@@GoGetYourShinebox why not.
@@GoGetYourShinebox agreed, doesnt matter what team you support to think another players good.
The players he left out could arguably make a team just as good as the one he picked. Incredible depth of class in the Man Utd player books.
He is tough but clearly is very charismatic as well which tends to be a quality of leadership.

Had Roy played with Vidic he’d have loved him. But from reading his book, I knew he’d pick Pally. They were a chaotic and brilliant duo I’d say haha.
Yea it's a pity because Vidic was a monster in defense what a great player
Van Nistelrooy had the most aesthetically pleasing finishing I've ever seen. Immediate, deadly. Unfortunately the team he went into had a bit of trouble, for one reason or the other. He may not have had quite the technique of Lewandowski or Benzema, nor a team behind him that harmonized as well at the time as Bayern and REal do now, but his strikes and instinct would be unrivaled even today.
Before his injury, early in his career, he was even better
@@HelloMyFriend_ yea, people often forget he was VERY quick as well and could beat most defenders purely on pace.
People said he was one-dimensional. Absolute nonsense. I'll never forget Basel away when he scored from the goal line. Incredible player. Nobody in the history of Manchester United has scored as many as quickly as Ruud. And that after a career threatening injury if not two but my memory is hazy.
Scored one goal outside the box. Charlton away. Remember it vividly. Top striker / scorer
I like how he’s played with some of the most talented players of that generation but it’s still all about attitude and the character, the basics

I promise you if you find any full game on RUclips from 2008 onwards and watch Rooney closely, you'll see an absolute shambles of a player who would track back like a demon and score a header or tap in.

Ahhh go on
3-4-3 formation
Van Der Sar
Stam - Ferdinand - Vidic
Neville - Keane - Scholes - Irwin
Ronaldo - Van Nistelrooy - Giggs
I didn't go with Schmeichel because I think Van Der Sar will be more comfortable with this defense.
Can't get enough Roy Keane content! Amazing insight as always
I remember when I was young the man Utd back 4 Paul Parker, Steve Bruce, Gary Pallister and Irwin, with Peter at the back probably the best defense man Utd ever had playing together at the same time.
