Obviously Carlton Palmer didn’t play with David Hirst during the 95/96 season. Because it was some of the best individual football I’ve seen. David Hirst was easily one of the premiership players of the season that year. Kind of got unnoticed. Remember, he was out for two years through injury before that season. Came back and picked up where he left off, but even better player in my opinion. That’s some going. Not just scoring goals but having a bundle of assists, he seemed to be involved with every Wednesday goal when he was in the team. Even though he picked up a few knocks, and missed a few games. He had a good lengthy run. And when he was out Wednesday struggled. But soon as he came back into the side, they went back to winning Ways again. That December run was one of the best performances by any team of all time and it wouldn’t have happened without David Hirst. With Euro 96 around the corner, he probably should’ve had a call up by Terry Venables. As a sub… Because David was more than just a goalscorer, but didn’t get recognised for the other aspects of his game… Because he was there with Eric Cantana and Dennis Bergkamp that season. But Cantona didn’t get picked for the French side either…
Little known facts about Carlton Palmer. 1. His uncle was a very famous golfer. 2. His Dad was the drummer for progressive rock band Emerson, Lake and Palmer. 3. Palmer violet sweets were named after him.
1991 league cup final, roland nillson marked lee sharpe not ryan giggs out of the game. CP never mentions David Hirst. CP was brilliant for swfc. If he was playing in London he might have got some better recognition for what he was good at. Anyone in doubt of his strengths watch any game CP was marking Les Ferdinand. Les would never get a touch when Palmer marked him. Also Palmer was a fantastic crosser of the ball. He always got the ball in the box.
Im a saints fan and when we signed cp i was horrified i thought what a donkey! But i,ll tell u what, he proved me wrong, and was terrific for us for a season.
lineker is good but he scored just one goal in his entire career outside the 18 yard box ......palmer played with the fabulous tony yeboah pace power technique with both left right and head at Leeds ...he scored world class goals that very few other players could score ...
Calton refers to the 1991 league cup final where Sheffield Wednesday beat Manchester United 1-0. In that game each team had 11 players start and 2 subs, and out of the 24 players, 22 were British! Only Roland Nilsson and John Harkes were none British. How English football has changed over 24 years.

HullMarkCA In all honesty the quality of the old First Division and early Premier League era from the late 80s to the mid 90s was poor and was below other leagues like Serie A, La Liga, Bundesliga, and several others. I personally believe that English clubs being banned from Europe played a big part in that as a lot of British players like Lineker, Hoddle, Hughes, Rush, Waddle and others left whilst few foreign players came in because of there being no European football and the poor reputation which English football had at the time.
Le Tiss would be 1st on the team sheet in midfield if anyone has any sense. Carton was just another Player who didn't like Le Tiss as Le Tiss is a boyhood legend unlike him
Always gets everything wrong heard him say waddle were 38 when he signed for wednesday other week then nilson marking giggs out of a game giggs didnt play in
Look everyone it is Sir Carlton brilliant Palmer the worst England midfielder in history to play the game at least the English fans love this guy they think this guy was their Messi.😂😂😂
CP still better player than that sham of an England midfield we have now- I would go so far as saying that if he was playing today he would be in the England 11 - not just covering for injuries as he did in his day.
Not really, most of these players peaked in the 80s by the 90s they were on the decline or older...the likes of Chris Waddle, John Barnes, Gary Liniker, Gazza etc we didnt see much of them in the 2nd half of the 90s so this team I would say is mid 80s to mid 90s LOL
Palmer is most overrated English player. He played both unsuccesfully euro 92 and whole qualification for WC 94 instead of Le Tissier, Barnes, McManaman, Sheringham, Beardsley...
What a player carlton was , he covered every blade of grass but that was only because his first touch was so bad , legend !!.
What a great team!!!!! Unreal
The passing in that midfield would be sublime, we had Gary Mac at Coventry, I'm surprised he came to us, his ball playing was something else.
Gary was one of those players the older he got the better he was

Carlton was an animal. Love the guy.
Des Walker always gets in. Top player.
Thoroughly enjoyed that carlton is a top man does he do after dinner talks

@@ThePixey1000 Thank you!
Nice work
I really respect this man. He is a utility player that values attacking flair.
He was absolute rubbish

I know he gets a lot of stick but Carlton comes across as an alright guy here to be fair
I met him at an event. He’s a very decent guy
lineker is good but he scored just one goal in his entire career outside the 18 yard box ......palmer played with the fabulous tony yeboah pace power technique with both left right and head at Leeds ...he scored world class goals that very few other players could score ...

rodders0223 Right, because every overseas player in the premiership is top class, right?

How many were English?
Roland played other games before the final and it was Lee Sharpe not Giggs.
Erm didn't Dennis Irwin and John Sheridan play? They weren't British
Good side and Palmer comes across v well
This guy is ok ....and will do for me any day
Matt Le Tiss didn’t make the cut then
Just like how he was constantly snubbed by Graham Taylor and Terry Venables when he was at his peak.
Le Tiss would be 1st on the team sheet in midfield if anyone has any sense. Carton was just another Player who didn't like Le Tiss as Le Tiss is a boyhood legend unlike him
Probably the best one2eleven
I suppose if David Hirst misses out to someone it has to be Lineker :)
Did he spell any of them right 😂
He meant Sharpe not giggs
Correct but same logic applies, Sharpey was on fire that year, beautiful to watch.
Good old Carlton Palmer he smokes marijuana na na na oooo na na na oooo! 🎵
@gareth roblyn good old Ian rush he likes to tickle bush na na na ooo na na na ooo!!!!
Didn't he play with le tissier?
Yes, but he didn’t get on with him, apparently
What no Yeboah?
Always gets everything wrong heard him say waddle were 38 when he signed for wednesday other week then nilson marking giggs out of a game giggs didnt play in
fenners looing like hes in Oasis
pogba is no more than a rich mans Carlton Palmer
Carlton probably did the best he could given his ability. The same can’t be said of Pogba
Roland Nilsson marked Giggs out of the game even through Giggs didn't play the game
messi's lightning
this guy was the first Harry
Maguire
Did well to mark giggs out game he never played thick useless worse England player Iv ever seen
You say thick but you spell I've as Iv.
Yeah that’s why he played for England for 8 years because he was rubbish…. Not
Le tiss would of scored his pen unlike waddle
would ifs and buts means nothing.
@@ay613 it’s because he’s not left wing and doesn’t fit the narrative le tiss
We bought him to replace David Batty ..............
Carlton Palmer is hilarious

The girrafe on ecstasy....so he picked the England team of the 90s then lol
