You're right about the feeling of guilt. I was on Leppings Lane directly behind the goal and my dad asked if we could move. I didn't want to move and we argued about it. But it was packed and I gave in. We exited via the tunnel and went to one of the side pens. Had that decision not been made, there would've been two extra people in the crush that day.

Watching the '88 and '89 finals, the '89 final feels like it wouldn't be out of place in today's game. The '88 final however feels like what it is: From another era.
As an Aston Villa fan this is one of the best finals I've ever watched. Villa Park hosted the Everton vs Norwich semi final at the same time as the awful events at Hillsborough were unfolding, so it's only fitting the final was contested by the two teams from that city. Both clubs were a credit to the game that day.
First FA cup final i remember, sat in our seaside caravan with my older brother an Everton fan and me a budding Liverpool fan only changed dramatically by Michael Thomas in the game against Arsenal after this game....
When finals were finals. The build up started from about 11:30/12 on Grandstsnd, they used to go the team hotels, follow the coaches to the stadium, interview players on the pitch.. they had everything. Now it’s all adverts in the half hour pre-match. Absolute joke.

Hey, I was there too! Long time ago, but something I'll never forget. I remember getting my ticket for the semi at Hillsborough and thinking if we won I'd miss out on the final. Luck or fate, I went to both. Emotional.
Everton fan and on the day was gutted we lost, with the benefit of hindsight it was only right that Liverpool won it that year. At the time Hillsborough was too raw to take in after weeks of funerals on Merseyside. Classic final though - I can almost appreciate Rush’s deft finishes now, at the time I dreaded the sight of him!
I came here and watched this again after getting a notification of someone "plus oneing" my other comment and at the risk of getting all romantic about the beautiful game it really is as if the 96 said "Nah, 1-0 to Liverpool, that's not good enough, this needs to be a classic cup final, let's have a scrambled equaliser in the last seconds to set it up!" God, I remember Grobbelaar going ballistic with one of his defenders when Liverpool seemed on the ropes (I think it was at 2-2) and thinking "Everton have got them here!". Almost like it was scripted though in the end, Beautiful! :)

What a season to say the least....the horrors of Hillsboro, that semi-final replay beating Forest, the crazy 1st half of the season when we were many points behind Arsenal, and then a superb winning run to go into the last game needing just a 0:1 loss or draw to win the DOUBLE.... but alas...it wasn't to be.... McCall was not as good as Peter Reid and Pre-injury Paul Bracewell. By this point even Trevor Steven was a shadow of his former self.
