- A Merseyside derby in the Wembley sun. Liverpool had already clinched the league title ahead of Everton, and so were going for the Double. The Toffees, in their third successive FA Cup final appearance, were looking for revenge. Time for Dalglish v Kendall and Hansen v Lineker. Time too for Brian Moore and David Pleat.
Such a shame. The FA cup used to be absolutely massive. Was the biggest cup for me, back then. Huge day
Watching this 32 years later... still a top quality game. No dives, players throwing the ball back to the opposition after being penalised, deft touches, fast movement, all in all thrilling football.
Yes agree! Those are the years FA cup final at olcl wembley staclium.
Even Linaker was normal then. 🤣
This is when the FA Cup final was like a world cup final.
This is why I loved the fa cup wish the feeling with clubs nowadays was the same L.F.C YNWA.
Days have long gone sadly
Was a massive thing ...watching players leave the hotels on the coach was the whole day
I agree. I guess we are showing how old we now are. Great comment.

@@michaelshannon5723well done to him not following the BS
Jan Mølby was simply superb. Brilliantly set up the first two Liverpool goals, and his simple touch to release Ronnie Whelan, who set up Rushie's clincher - pure genius. Liverpool was stacked with supreme talent back then.
He was such a driving force for this team
Absolutely, he had a beautiful touch and his vision and passing ability was second to none. He was the orchestrator in midfield and most of the best play went through him. Don't expect him to run up and down the pitch or track back during the game because it wouldn't happen lol, but when you needed that creativity and vision from midfield then there was none better than big Jan, the Scouse Dane.
Yeah what a sturdy, strong Footballer and his passing was absolute genius on many occasions. LEGEND.👍
Great player,Jan.
Rushy was just amazing
Watching Lawro as a pundit you forget how blindingly quick he was and what a great 'reader' of the game he could be. Him and Hanson were a great defensive pairing.

A classic. Back when the FA Cup final was a event for the whole country, empty streets and either watched John Motson on BBC1 or Brian Moore on ITV with both channels travelling with a team each by coach to Wembley. Always looked forward to it even when my team (Spurs) wasn't involved.
lol, Spurs seldom are, mate!
Yes, I used to love the day. The coverage would start early in the day, following the team and the showing thdd Ed road to Wembley.
You painted the perfect picture.
The ITV wrestling or FA Cup Question of Sport usually just before the game😂
This was my first Liverpool match as a kid watched it with my mom. Now 36 years later many tears of sorrows and pure joy still passionate about my beloved Reds.....YNWA.
I'm not a Liverpool supporter but what I don't get about Liverpool's 3rd goal in this game is why it is not considered, hands-down, greatest ever FA cup goal scored, and also the greatest team goal ever scored - it's even better than Carlos Alberto's goal for Brazil's in the 1970 world cup final. It's just an insanely incredible goal that's unfathomably underrated and not mentioned as much as it deserves.
Whelan and Rush ran their balls off for that last goal.
@@brianbarry1193 Throw in Molby's vision too .
I am a Liverpool supporter and have never really appreciated that goal till reading your comment and rewatching it. Wow what a goal! Liverpool win the ball on the edge of their own box and the running from Ian Rush is incredible.
Good move good goal but nowhere near Carlos Alberto in 1970 in my opinion, sorry.
@@pablojablo6371 He must have eyes in the back of his head
Wow that game seems like yesterday. I am nearly 57 now. I was 23 going on 24 then. Seems like yesterday which means that another 33 years in the future today will seem like yesterday and I will be 90, except I won't be 90 in all likelihood I will be dead. Yikes let's not go there!! Me too. I was 8.:) Glory days. The bitters were not as bad them days.
@@geeandme7760 Ironically, the end of the friendly derby days coincided with Everton's success. Funny that.
Me too. I am 38 now. A very entertaining match. Everton could have sewn it up if they took that chance early in 2nd half too. When the FA Cup Final was the highlight of the football calender.
I watched every FA cup final in the early 70’s to the early 80’s before moving to the US. No football was televised here except the WC. I never saw the careers of most of the players involved. I still miss seeing the old Wembley Stadium. I’m still in the US and I’ve missed dozens of past finals. An expat in Florida.
Molby truly was a great LFC player. A wonderful performance that day.
And a real gentleman.
He knocked over a camera, and knocked Everton's chances over as well... Brilliant.
Omg dalglish and rush, what a partnership
Musab Hasan it’s actually the worst game Dalglish has ever played for liverpool
Imagine this team including Gerrard.
@@nauf971 seriously, shocking touch and decision making for such a legend during a cup final. Having 10 legends around him made it not a big deal for him to have a shit touch for the day though lol
5 goals in 3 cup finals.. no-one scored more than Ian Rush ⚽⚽
Rush's first was actually Craig Johnston's!
@@Ruda-n4h technically it was would be harsh tho

I watched this game with my late Father in Australia on SBS.One of the very few live games from England. Every time I watch this game it bring me to tears just bring so much great memories of me and my dad jumping in joy when Aussie C J scored
I miss the old Wembley, the FA Cup final played in glorious sunshine.

@@markwhittaker6866 just something about the ironic goals and the shape of the stadium. The gaps behind the goals from the terraces. The "new"wembley doesnt do it for me.

That Liverpool team was a machine.
Gerwulf the Red __
question is would utd of won so many titles in the 90s if this liverpool team was playing this good in the 90s instead of the 80s
Early on that season we where awful till kenny came back into the team then we improved immensely . That title charge and run in was nerve racking
They certainly were.I admire Liverpool's strength and consistency -and I'm an Evertonian !
That Everton team would have had a real chance in European Cup.. Oh hold on liverpools amazing fans murdered and got them and all rest of English clubs banned
The dulcet tones of Brian Moore. The FA Cup was magical then.
Simpler times, and all the better for it.
It all went wrong in the 90s. I still watch the FA Cup final but it just feels so forgettable now.
as a Manchester United who is from Manchester and will never stop watching replays of Whiteside the year before, I remember watching this cup final, gutted that my team weren't part of it but being so impressed by the standard of the two teams. I'm supposed to hate Liverpool but watching Jan Molby in the 2nd half is about as good as it can get! great times!
Fair play buddy 👍
Molby was a fucking tank. Would be called fat by todays standards, his game wasnt about pace or movement. Just immense passing and vision.
Jonathon Gates as a United fan myself I felt exactly the same. I must say that I would rather watch football from the 80’s and early 90’s than the current crap that calls itself football. Doesn’t matter who’s playing either!! And I just had to hold my hands up back then and say that both Liverpool and Everton were playing a different class of football.
Today we talked about Alcantara..but Molby was from another dimension...a master passer.
Best two sides in Europe at the time.
Brian Moore was such a great commentator.
That he was such a classic voice! I'm a Everton fan and hate watching this!!
David Bleat was great also
My only flaw was his obvious bias towards London clubs. He supported Gillingham but it was obvious how much he liked Arsenal when commentated on their games. Still missed though.
I'm after being trying to think of his name for ages. Thanks mate cos that would have done my head in. Lol.
I always thought Brian Moore was better than any of the BBC commentators of the time
I was a teenager when I watched this in Australia. Craig Johnston became the first Australian to score in a FA cup final. It was a shame that he never got the chance to play for Australia. Have always followed Liverpool & would love to see us winning more trophies.
AND the inventor of the famous ADIDAS PREDETOR BOOT...
"...always followed Liverpool & would love to see us winning more trophies."
Also Kewell. Great left foot. Another talented Aussie who played for Liverpool.
two great sides at their peaks of power....rarely seen a FA cup final with two sides as in their prime as these...
Very true.
2005 and 2007 fa cup finals are the only times that can probably come close.

This 80's football is a lot better quality football than we see today.

Absolutely
No, it really wasn't. This was in the days when many players were alcoholics, did not bother with fitness, and didn't do any research in their opposition, complete amateurism compared to today.

One of the best Liverpool kits of all time too, definitely my favourite.

For anyone interested i highly recommend listening to the Marty Johns Podcast episode with Craig Johnston. Craig’s story is extraordinary. If you look at his celebration after scoring he’s repeating the words “I’ve done it” and when you hear everything he battled through to get to that point in his career you’ll understand why those words were so meaningful.
He was shite, just lucky he had good players around him,he was a really messy footballer, basically a runner/trier.I remember watching him play in a reserve game at goodison,he was so bad we all thought it was a wind up honestly he was BEYOND shite, how the fuck he got that lucky l will never know.

I remember my sister screaming "he's gonna score, he's gonna score" when Lineker went through for the opening goal, and me getting annoyed with her because he scored lol.
Turned it round emphatically in that second half though, was never in doubt. So many great memories in that final, the Brucie crossbar tip save and the altercation with Beglin, Whelan stepping round the big blue balloon and Rushie smashing the camera with his finish.

Was at this game 38 years ago today. Times were simpler then. Good Times.
It was live on TV here in Holland. We have been going to Feyenoord with the family for decades, but to see that in the seventies and eighties was something special: always admired football and the experience of football in the UK. It's a shame that it's all become so commercial now, but that's an understatement.

Wembley was much more a beautiful stadium back then. Classic and able to bring the country together. The new stadium is just like any other...
ajwasp I agree the old stadium was the best in the world
ajwasp I thought I was the only mad one who shares that sentiment. Old Wembley was much more classy and simple with the character to watch football. Had the people that ran it, thought to tweak it in certain aspects, it would still be appreciated. Time as it tramples on, made it a soulless bowl. New Wembley is blah.
eles214 I agree they should have improved it step by step
eles214 thanks for the comment man. You are right. I mean old Wembley being changed as it did, is like changing Buckingham Palace into a " Trump Towers " type of affair. I thought Wembley was a grade two listed building or something. So far the new Wembley has done no one any favors, least of all football fans who miss the atmosphere like here in this all Merseyside Derby F.A Cup final. I was twelve at the time and saw it on T.V. but I was there at Wembley for the 1989 all Merseyside F.A. Cup final and it lives in my memories for ever and ever, :-). YNWA!
ajwasp they should have done it step by step like how they are now doing to Buckingham palace
nou camp the bernabau they are old buildings they did not knock them down so why knock down Wembley stadium they should have started repairing it in 1980
Just goes to show that I remember all the fa cup finals (and some league cup finals) of the 80s and 90s, but I can't tell you who the current (2021) holders of the cup are.

It's possible that the technical quality of the players would be better today, but English football was so much more... likable back then. And there was an undeniable magic about the the old Wembley on Cup Final day. Gone today. I find myself watching repeats of old games on youtube and not watching modern football at all!

So many memories. When the FA cup was like the world cup, it was so important. How times have changed.
I was there for the first FA Cup Merseyside Derby. My fellow American squash mate was from California and his English girlfriend worked for the FA at Lancaster Gate. She got me tickets for 5 FA Cup Finals when I was living in London in the 80's and early 90's. What great times they were, seeing this great match and seeing Ian Wright blast one in the back of the net when he was playing for Crystal Palace. Gazza against Forest playing like a Drunken Sailor for Spurs. Man, oh Man I miss going to Wembley. Great times they were!
I remember watching 86 FA Cup amazing football, proper tacking, end to end & all players proud to wear the shirt of there team
The third goal was a work of genius. The whole movement , set up and finish by Rush.
driffter1976 Indeed! Dailgish fake run to confuse defenders and Molby perfect cross to Rush to finished the job. Brilliant!

At 16:57, can clearly see it's Craig Johnston's goal, pause it and see the ball on the line as Johnston slides in, play it a bit and can see movement of the ball changes direction
When you know what Craig Johnston went through to become a footballer, it's so sweet that he got his goal 👍
It might sound odd, but games like this are the reason I grew up supporting Everton. They were never the best team, but always the plucky underdogs. I like that. And there’s no shame in losing to that Liverpool team. They were all but unstoppable back then.
I watched this on bbc all those years ago so thanks for the Brian Moore version ynwa
When the FA cup was a unreal achievement to win it...
Just my opinion but i always preferred Brian Moore over John Motson. Moore's famous catchphrase of "its in there" I just liked him better.
Motty was awful, David Coleman was the best.

Best British football team of all time - would have had more European Cups had they not been banned after Heysel. Miss the pure simplicity of that pass and move game - what a team.
I would argue the team got even better when they sold Rush and bought Barnes, Beardsley, Aldridge and Houghton.
who's fault was that
When you think Everton very nearly won the double the previous year it must have been gutting for their fans. Molby and Rush were the difference. Nice to hear Brian Moore.
