Mate you're definitely a Renaissance man, multi talented and constantly creative.
If I may, to make the holes for the stainless steel rods more consistent and with a better fit you should consider using a reamer after drilling with a conventional HSS drill. It certainly will make the "break in" period far shorter for the new puppet.
Looking forward to the next installment of this project.

This 3D printed to sculpting to scan and repeat iteration loop is so interesting and, as far as I'm aware, unique. As a fellow 3D printer enthusiast I definitely would've just been working entirely in modeling software and making iterations there. But being able to manually interact with the object between iterations truly seems invaluable. If I ever have the time to do such a project I'll definitely be investing in a 3D scanner so I can replicate this process!

There's nothing wrong with how he's doing it, but I do see him shifting a bit over time. The convenience of having a piece sculpted just the way he likes it and then making ten more on a whim, plus the freedom it gives him to iterate new designs from any starting point, and the ease of customization.. it's all just to strong of a pull. I don't think he'll drop hand sculpting completely. But once he gets the hang of it he could build a whole family of bugs and birds ready to sculpt on top of.

I first saw you sitting at my dinning room table, I think it was about 8th grade for me. I was blown away with the work you had done, and instantly I set to work recreating a paper copy of your Manu (if I spelled that right) from the great big story cover from about 7 or 8 years ago. I showed the paper creation to my friends, a horned Viking with fake fur and a huge roving beard that made him very expressive when he snapped his head around to look at you, and his great bushy beard would rap around his waist. We all started making some puppets, and we feverishly watched your work. I am now 21 years old, I work at a sculpture studio with one of the best sculptors in the US, and to this day I continue to be fascinated by your work. 7 years of inspiration, I continue to be dumbfounded. Personally I love the build along videos, it’s great to see how some of the mechanisms I had thought daunting start as lumpy milliput, and I laugh now at my 14 year old wonder. Love your work, can’t wait to see more!!!

20:57 what's really impressive is watching your hand move without the full puppet on. You would still think you had a full puppet on just by how your fingers move. Would love to see you do your puppet thing with hands only. Like the walking motion of your hand is insane because it's so natural to you.

I would absolutely love a crash course on diy puppets! A lot of really cool puppet mechanisms are difficult or even impossible to learn about because the techniques are being used by professionals who either keep them a secret or want people to pay to learn them. Puppetry as simply a hobby is cool, but it's hard to know where to start.

Something to think about for future puppets is how some insects like beetles have kind of a less flexible cover over their wings. These can even be used to glide when said insect doesn't want to fly.

I have started using bicycle chain wax lubricant for small exposed mechanisms like this. (silca super secret in particular) It drys in place leaving a coating of solid wax and tungsten dislufide (basically super graphite). It greatly reduces friction and, critically, stays clean. Oil will quickly attract dirt, but the wax sheds debris away and stays in place beautifully.

*NOTE:* I know it's a puppet and not real, obviously. But the bouncing antlers make the *Bug Puppet* look FAKE and destroy the magic of it being a real creature. In nature antlers doing bounce around as insects move. So because yours bounce around it just becomes more obvious that it's made of rubber. And therefore, ruins all the work you do to make it feel *Real.* Making people know they are just watching a puppet. Ergo, *Magic* destroyed.
Which is a shame seeing your creations and skills making them come to life are just mind blowing.

its called secondary motion/animation, there are things in real life that have secondary motions, like when dogs sway their tails but not directly, only due to the way they walk, its a thing puppeteers and animators have to include in their characters, otherwise it looks stiff and more toy-like in puppets, in animations when you dont do any secondary motion it looks stiff and souless
