if you are searching for a flexible material you could try the holy grail of miniature hobbyists around the world.
"Green stuff" or the unbranded material "kneadatite".
it cures much like milliput but retains a good flexibility, only problem is that its incredibly sticky during modeling so you might want to use plenty of water.
ps, by mixing green stuff and milliput in a 50/50 ratio you get something that we jokingly refer to as gorilla putty, its really the best of both worlds (flexibility of green stuff and resilience of milliput)
hope this helps, keep up the good work
Gotta like this to make barnaby See this!
Grillaput🦧🦧
+1
@@JJorse7149the way Google thinks "grillaput" needs to be translated to "barbecue accessories"
I will say, Ive heard greenstuff can be tacky sometimes? Unsure if that’s true, but something to look into.
Amazing idea though!
I think one fix to the flamboyance of the feathers would be to have them rotate from a portion of the head. Like the stick out when emoting, but sit kinda flush when at rest.
Kinda like Toothless with his ear flaps
If you've ever watched a bird that has a crest, some of them do this. I watch a tufted titmouse, cardinal or bluejay all raise and lower a tuft when they are about to attack or get startled
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
So happy to be able to watch the repairing of our avian overlord
Yes, All Hail Dabchick!!!!
All hail dabchick
All Hail Dabchick!!!!
All hail Dabchick!!!!
All hail Dabchick!
Dabchick has an aura of what I can only describe as scrunkliness around him, and I wonder if these feathers might be too symmetrical, neatly organized, and pristine to feel like they belong to Dabchick.
He seems the type to be proud of his plumage and maintain it as well as he can whilst still getting himself into enough situations and debauchery that is is always vaguely raggedy regardless! Feather details are such a good opportunity for character storytelling!
This! Absolutely agree.
Oooh! Yes. Perhaps some molding of the feathers for the mechanism uniformity and then a tapering/shaping of the feather "blade" to decrease down the sides and thus achieve the scrunkliness.
I think perhaps the perfact alignment and symmetry of the feathers makes him look more cartoony and pristine than the Dabchick we know, and rather than just limit the movement, making the feathers or the mobility (or both) less perfectly symmetrical might do the trick and bring out his true personality. Then again you're making a spanking new Dabchick (while he's monitoring your process) so maybe that wouldn't be entirely true to his story... Seen from that perspective, what would Dabchick WANT? And be on your case about? That's another layer you might explore to find the right end of your dramatic journey remodelling and rejuvinating him.
Is he the original Frankenbirb? Will he be entirely chuffed with your work or a bastard about what you didn't do for him given the opportunity? I'm certainly in suspense of how this will turn out.
In any case, he is dearly missed. Please tell him that.
Try using the 2-part 'Greenstuff' instead of Milliput for your cast feathers. It is much more rubbery and won't suffer all those brittle failures, though for the same reason it isn't nearly as good to carve details into. But if you are pushing it into the mould it will take the detail pretty well, I also understand you can actually mix both together to get a more middle ground result that perhaps should become your default for these mechanical experiments, though that one I've never tried myself.
Also for any later resin 3d prints there are a wide range of resins available that are similarly not as a brittle as miliput (though many also are) so you should be able to find a suitable one.
GLORIOUS FEATHERS
Honestly, i agree that that sort of glory would look better on another puppet.
I would definitely add a 2nd layer of feathers to hide the movements.
I would also make the moving feathers shorter in length.
Keep up the amazing work!
The feathers so far, look like a halo or crown, so maybe some smaller ones would suit better. It's interesting to learn about your process of experimenting with the mechanisms and material challenges
I know we’ve all been saying it, but the puppet making content is your best stuff, loving this series
Dabchick 3d models? I would love to be able to 3d print one
'We thought we could control their numbers, to limit the spread.
We learned too late that the horde was unstoppable.'
"I can't feel my legs" made me laugh way more then it should've xD. Another great episode and can't wait for more!
i’m gonna miss the old dabchick but im gonna love the new one!
He doesn't need any moving feathers on the head. Unless... Maybe keep the original head shape, with no moving parts, and then carve the top to make room (indentations) for flat, flush feathers. When down, they will look like a relief decoration, when pushed from below with an array of pins, they will raise a bit.
edit: the feathers can be really thin, cut out of a plastic bottle for example.
Yes! I missed him so much, can’t wait for his return. I’ll miss the old version and it will always be a classic but the new one will have so much pizzazz ✨
I think moving feathers are a great idea. but personally, I think dabchick needs to closely resemble his previous model when at rest, just like the last update of his design. Maybe 'keeping the silhouette' could be a good idea. Anyway, take your time and do a job you're proud of. I know the final product will be brilliant no matter what you choose to do. Looking forward to the glorious return of our ornitho-emperor.
Be careful using resin to make hinge, resin really hate friction, it's gonna wear real quick.
This channel and Bobby Fingers have have rekindled my love for two different, but somehow related art forms.
I personally prefer a more classic look for Dabchick, but it’s really cool to peak behind the curtains at your design process for a new puppet
yup
Id want to say you could either stick with the larger feathers but have a little less movement with them so it acts like another subtle expression, but one that makes him more… expressive, or smaller feathers with a greater range of movement to allow for a sort of similar expression, but with greater impact.
Whatever way you might take it, im certain it’ll be great. Keep it up!
I personally think that the Feathers by the Cheeks may be a bit of Overkill 😅
But the idea of the Non moving Feathers may help Quite a bit!
Love watching these & can't wait for the Next one!!
Also... would u be selling the STL file of Dabchick so fans can have their own?
It definitely needs something to cover the mechanism, otherwise it looks like he has a crown of lieves
If you do go the moving feathers route, it may be beneficial to reduce their movement range.
Something about his feather sticking up so far just didn't quite feel right. Sort of like it was more cartoony than expressive
Dabchick is slowly gaining more powers, he's becoming more powerful.
Don't overcomplicate Dabchick. I think the charm of the model is also in its simplicity
I like the idiot comment of we can rebuild him, faster, stronger, and dabbier
I still use the Dabchick sound you made years ago as my phone ringtone.
I loved the way you said "In theory", when talking about the idéa for the lever for lifting the centre feather.
I have this "saying" : In theory, everything is possible - even catching eels with a lasso. 🤣😉
I don't care if dabchick changes as much as dabchick exists I'm happy
I think take queues from the original dabchick design and keep the feathers smaller with more subtle movement, could work in theory anyway. Having two rows of smaller feather with the back row having most of the movement and the front row with just a bit of flex could look really good
And like another commenter said, mixing "green stuff" and milliput together could make a viable material
I like the big feather mechanism, keeping that but adding a row of flexible feathers on a band or "crest" for his forehead could add to his detail level and would give him an extra replaceable soft layer to keep him from cracking his skull on his jaunts.
Hey Barneby, What will you do with Dabchicks old body once you finish his revival? You won't throw him away or anything will you? Maybe you could put him on display in his own special case or something. Adding a plack with his Name on it. I'm unsure why I asked this really, I guess I'm one to not throw something special away, haha.
The old body should be burned in effigy so Dabchick's soul can take permanent residence in the new body.
@@computer_toucher Jesus man, he's still alive in pieces and you wanna burn the poor sod? lol
Hi. I am a fan of the Wintergatan channel(Marble Machine). He has advertised you, so I am with you.
I like your puppet work. It is very realistic. Good job!
Keep going :)
When doing CAD, Blender is a rather bad choice as it is meant for making animations and such, rather than mechanical engineering. Rather, use a purpose built CAD software, I personally use Fusion 360 since it's free if you don't make more than £100 000 off the designs.
it might add on to the complexity of the design, which isn't what you wanted for the feathers, but i had an idea to tidy up the fishing line; what if the outer two feathers had loops *in the middle on the back* that the excess was fed through? so instead of poking out the sides, the excess line would run along the length of the outer feathers hidden from view. additionally, this would allow you to put the line higher up for optimal responsiveness!
Barnabydixon or someone. Can u tell me the background music.whats it called pls Tell me
I think something this exaggerated has potential, just needs some work. Think of it, if Dabchick were to get really scared or shocked or anything like that, it would be so much easier to read if his feathers bristled up like a cat, just adds emphasis on his emotions for better storytelling.
I feel like his feathers should be more muted. I don’t think that should be fully emotive, because dabchick has his own style. I’d love for them to maybe extend max 45 degrees, so it doesn’t pull focus or make too much negative space while extended.
At the same time I completely trust your judgement…it’s your puppet and to be honest, you’re the complete professional on this. You’ve done so many amazing things, don’t take every comment as ultimate truth :).
It's like if somone took Michael Cera and diffused him with Tay Zonday.
If i can offer some constructive criticism. It's really easy as an artist to 'over design' when working on a project your passionate about. I personally think you have a great design with dabchick. The personality comes out in the voice and realistic bird movement's. However it's a bit much when you add moveable head fethers
I'm not sure we are ready for a feathered Dabchick... But we will prepare!
At the risk of being overly irritating with yet another suggestion from the peanut gallery, might I propose a suggestion for your hinge? You're making it too complicated. Why not just use that fishing line for your hinge? Cut a small groove in the head, another in the feather, then glue a length of fishing line in the two grooves to attach the feather. If it pops out, it's easy to fix. And better yet, if the feather gets hit on the side, the line will flex instead of breaking. Plus, it'd get rid of that "mechanical look" you were complaining about.
I don't really see dabchick spread it's feathers like a peacock. at least not permanently. maybe this design approach will leave you with different versions like the ironman suits
I just wanna say that I am gonna miss the old Dabchick. (unless there's a way to bring him back)
The crown of feathers makes him look like a sunflower. Why not a saggital array, like a rooster?
With the amazing printed chain mail patterns out there, print a feather mail that can attach to the back of the head and allows the feathers to be engaged all together?? Puffy starling dabchick😂
Aperantly there's something called copper clay that when you torch it it turns into metal
i think the lower feathers on the sides of the head are a bit much, dabchicks head is already quite wide and flat, so making it go out more is a bit overkill
I think if the feather's size were reduced to a third, they won't be overbearing.
hey you might not see this but I have to same 3d printer as you but I don't have a use for it an I was wandering if you wanted it?
Are you set in your ways of using milliput for all this? I do a lot of sculpting myself and I know milliput can be very easy to break once it's cured. An alternative would be green stuff, which has a lot more elasticity once cured. You can also mix green stuff with Milliput in roughly 1:1 to somewhat get the best of both worlds
from Dab to Fab-chick with those feathers.
I am just so incredibly pleased with what you're making, Barnaby! It's so imaginative and fun. Keep going, keep going!
if the head feathers don't stick out too much then maybe compliant flexures cold be a good direction, printed in nylon they could be quite resilient, or even all feathers could be on a strip so to be replaceable if broken
I'm a cute little bunny whabit.
Just spitballing, but you could potentially, once it's all said and done, release the 3d model files so people could try 3d printing their own dabchicks as a fun project? Maybe as a patreon reward or something. Unsure how much of the actual final product will be 3d printing and how much of it will be extra metal bits and mechanisms, but from the sound of it it seems like you're intending on the model itself doing most of the heavy lifting so it seems possible.
You may want to learn about compliant mechanisms, they work by flexing a part instead of making a mechanism with 2 or 3 parts, like the hinges connecting the feathers to the head.
I hate it. Dabchick is a bald icon!
Dabchick is just evolving
So.. hair club for dabbs then?
I love that Dabchick will reign on, I hope there is some distressing on the final form. His depravity demands it!!
Im ready for the return of the redheaded handsome mr dabby dab
You could use copper clay for dabchick
not a fan of the moving feathers >_>
I've actually seen a few art doll and sculpture art youtubers use a clay brand called Cosclay which helps them mold pieces that stay flexible and durable! Maybe you can try it and see if that works for Dabchick's feathers!
I have an idea on how to make smaller feathers.
Use a flexible material and fasten it on the back of his skull ( the same place you used). You can drill some holes and push the material in and glue it.
Or you can incorporate the holes (or slots or whatever you want to use) in the cad models.
I think that it would look more organic and not so big if you would do it this way. Good luck. Exited for the future.
you should get dabchick to give us some based political opinions
Hope DabChick may soon get better & have fun adventures again. Also, great way to start First Day of Senior year.
Sun God Dabchick
Dabchick is evolving.
I just realized, what happened to the dinosaur? Dabchick’s practically pet-dog
Thanks for keeping us up to date on Dabchick's recovery!
4:36 the bunny rabbit made my day 😆
Dabchick Prime
Dabchick's depravity DESERVES overkill and extravagance!!!
I would try to make the feathers decrease in length as the go more towards the bottom. It would help prevent that “crown” look! Although I know that will be more difficult, but it may end up helping 👍
Basically: ▪️◼️▪️with feathers
Will there be one beefy arm and consummate “v”s?
TROGDAB!!!
He’s gonna have dancing feathers!!!!! 😮 i would never think dabchick would ever look this good!!!! 🥰🥰😍
I wonder if a modified version of the mechanism that drives Dabchick could be made that would work as well to control a double-size Dabchick?
IM A CUTE LITTLE BUNNY RABBIT
I've been worried for him since I first heard he was dieing hopefully
He'll be back soon
The second layer of feathers limiting the movement sounds rather glorious overall. We'll all be convinced it's Dabchick once we hear it speak. You may want to make a "classic" head as well though, if the feathers prove too temperamental.
Ive been so hyperfixated on this mans puppetskills for years... his way of ventriloquism is AMAZING!
Dabchick evolves tooooo DABCHUNK 🎉 looking great buddy
Hey man, here's an idea: When the time comes, you have to make a 'mind transfer' from the old body to the new one. You have to use lots of sparks and electricity, just like Frankenstein. I guarantee lots of views on that one.
every time he mentioned, "hole" and "pinned" and "flexibility" my mind goes elsewhere and i'm so sorry, but not sorry either.
Dear Barn a Dydixon what are you going to do with the old parts when you make the new Dad Chick? I think that the old form is the best one for him. It really suits him and it is the best form for him in the long run and its a classic. If its not broken then why fit it? If you know what I mean that is? Don't get me wrong I know that he falling a part and all but the old form is the best one for him. The ideas that you have are great and all but like you said he not a fancy guy if any thing he a grumpy old fart more like and we like him for that. I cant wait to see what he looks like and I hope that your ideas will work for him even if its not the old form. And I just wanted to ask you something. Will he have a family like team that is kind a like his family like a mom and a dad or kids of his own or both. Like say he an uncle who has 3 annoying N who are annoying to say the least kind a like Donald Duck? Something like that is what am saying. Or is he get an enemy who annoys him all the time that he try's to one up a lot? in the Future of the show? Am just asking because I just wanted to know because your work is very good and well done
I know it's a little way off, but one little pro-tip I was given when I first started 3D printing miniatures is that you can actually make up your own mix of resins to get the results you want. So you can get very hard resins, and very soft flexible resins, then you can mix them yourself to get the ratio you want to meet your needs.
I can't believe how bad your luck has been with resin printing. I just got my first resin printer like 2 weeks ago and I have only had 1 print fail and thats because I left a plastic film in the vat.
I was thinking the feathers were too large. SMASHING VIDEO PLZ!
Uuuuummmm.....yeah maybe not add those, kinda looking like cyborg lisa Simpson
One day I'm looking forward to a scifi like video where you transfer Dabchick's consciousness from his old to new body. Something very Dr. Frankensteinish.
"It's alive!"
Did that dirty little resin-leaking weeb send you that refund for the printer yet, Barnaby?
There's something very South American about Dabchick's new crest.
I think having fewer moving feathers could be nice. It could make for a funnier expression for dabchick. Maybe just 3
Dabchick is looking dapper and extra fluffy now! the extra movement will make him so much more expressive!
Neck beard and moustache? Can we pick a f'ing lane please BD?...only kidding, grow full or shave all.
Hey Barnaby!
What is Matilda up to lately?… Since you started this series of remaking “The Avian Overlord “ we haven’t seen much of her… is she boozing herself to sleep alone, since Dabchick is in pieces? Please, let us know… we don’t see any cat hair stuck to your current casting project… it’s concerning! Thank you, very much enjoying your videos and process. 😊
Ah, the Evolution of Dabchick, the Phoenix. After his "birth", we do know he won't stop crowing about his rising, yes?
Please I *BEG* you bring back the Dino puppet…oh and can you possibly make some more Dino puppet’s so the current overgrown torkay doesn’t get lonely 🙏btw love your videos:]
