    if you are searching for a flexible material you could try the holy grail of miniature hobbyists around the world.
    "Green stuff" or the unbranded material "kneadatite".
    it cures much like milliput but retains a good flexibility, only problem is that its incredibly sticky during modeling so you might want to use plenty of water.
    ps, by mixing green stuff and milliput in a 50/50 ratio you get something that we jokingly refer to as gorilla putty, its really the best of both worlds (flexibility of green stuff and resilience of milliput)
    hope this helps, keep up the good work

    I think one fix to the flamboyance of the feathers would be to have them rotate from a portion of the head. Like the stick out when emoting, but sit kinda flush when at rest.

    Dabchick has an aura of what I can only describe as scrunkliness around him, and I wonder if these feathers might be too symmetrical, neatly organized, and pristine to feel like they belong to Dabchick.
    He seems the type to be proud of his plumage and maintain it as well as he can whilst still getting himself into enough situations and debauchery that is is always vaguely raggedy regardless! Feather details are such a good opportunity for character storytelling!

      Oooh! Yes. Perhaps some molding of the feathers for the mechanism uniformity and then a tapering/shaping of the feather "blade" to decrease down the sides and thus achieve the scrunkliness.

  • @gnarbeljo8980
    @gnarbeljo8980 Год назад +45

    I think perhaps the perfact alignment and symmetry of the feathers makes him look more cartoony and pristine than the Dabchick we know, and rather than just limit the movement, making the feathers or the mobility (or both) less perfectly symmetrical might do the trick and bring out his true personality. Then again you're making a spanking new Dabchick (while he's monitoring your process) so maybe that wouldn't be entirely true to his story... Seen from that perspective, what would Dabchick WANT? And be on your case about? That's another layer you might explore to find the right end of your dramatic journey remodelling and rejuvinating him.
    Is he the original Frankenbirb? Will he be entirely chuffed with your work or a bastard about what you didn't do for him given the opportunity? I'm certainly in suspense of how this will turn out.
    In any case, he is dearly missed. Please tell him that.

  • @foldionepapyrus3441
    @foldionepapyrus3441 Год назад +70

    Try using the 2-part 'Greenstuff' instead of Milliput for your cast feathers. It is much more rubbery and won't suffer all those brittle failures, though for the same reason it isn't nearly as good to carve details into. But if you are pushing it into the mould it will take the detail pretty well, I also understand you can actually mix both together to get a more middle ground result that perhaps should become your default for these mechanical experiments, though that one I've never tried myself.
    Also for any later resin 3d prints there are a wide range of resins available that are similarly not as a brittle as miliput (though many also are) so you should be able to find a suitable one.

    He doesn't need any moving feathers on the head. Unless... Maybe keep the original head shape, with no moving parts, and then carve the top to make room (indentations) for flat, flush feathers. When down, they will look like a relief decoration, when pushed from below with an array of pins, they will raise a bit.
    edit: the feathers can be really thin, cut out of a plastic bottle for example.

    When doing CAD, Blender is a rather bad choice as it is meant for making animations and such, rather than mechanical engineering. Rather, use a purpose built CAD software, I personally use Fusion 360 since it's free if you don't make more than £100 000 off the designs.

  • @juneBug412
    @juneBug412 Год назад +2

    it might add on to the complexity of the design, which isn't what you wanted for the feathers, but i had an idea to tidy up the fishing line; what if the outer two feathers had loops *in the middle on the back* that the excess was fed through? so instead of poking out the sides, the excess line would run along the length of the outer feathers hidden from view. additionally, this would allow you to put the line higher up for optimal responsiveness!

    I think something this exaggerated has potential, just needs some work. Think of it, if Dabchick were to get really scared or shocked or anything like that, it would be so much easier to read if his feathers bristled up like a cat, just adds emphasis on his emotions for better storytelling.

  • @original_demonic
    @original_demonic Год назад +1

    I feel like his feathers should be more muted. I don’t think that should be fully emotive, because dabchick has his own style. I’d love for them to maybe extend max 45 degrees, so it doesn’t pull focus or make too much negative space while extended.
    At the same time I completely trust your judgement…it’s your puppet and to be honest, you’re the complete professional on this. You’ve done so many amazing things, don’t take every comment as ultimate truth :).

    At the risk of being overly irritating with yet another suggestion from the peanut gallery, might I propose a suggestion for your hinge? You're making it too complicated. Why not just use that fishing line for your hinge? Cut a small groove in the head, another in the feather, then glue a length of fishing line in the two grooves to attach the feather. If it pops out, it's easy to fix. And better yet, if the feather gets hit on the side, the line will flex instead of breaking. Plus, it'd get rid of that "mechanical look" you were complaining about.

Maybe as a patreon reward or something. Unsure how much of the actual final product will be 3d printing and how much of it will be extra metal bits and mechanisms, but from the sound of it it seems like you're intending on the model itself doing most of the heavy lifting so it seems possible.

    Use a flexible material and fasten it on the back of his skull ( the same place you used). You can drill some holes and push the material in and glue it.
    Or you can incorporate the holes (or slots or whatever you want to use) in the cad models.
    I think that it would look more organic and not so big if you would do it this way. Good luck. Exited for the future.

    Hey Barnaby!
    What is Matilda up to lately?… Since you started this series of remaking “The Avian Overlord “ we haven’t seen much of her… is she boozing herself to sleep alone, since Dabchick is in pieces? Please, let us know… we don’t see any cat hair stuck to your current casting project… it’s concerning! Thank you, very much enjoying your videos and process. 😊

    Ah, the Evolution of Dabchick, the Phoenix. After his "birth", we do know he won't stop crowing about his rising, yes?
