Chris Scruggs is an absolute monster. He knows he’s the best player in the room but would never say it. Such a humble dude, and a real music historian.
I was so happy when Chris joined Marty and the Fabulous Superlatives. What a super group, when Chris is your bass player. I loved Chris in BR549, too. He is the real deal and I agree he should be all over RUclips and on everybody's play list.
After you hear Chris Scruggs nail pretty much any country style on guitar here, remember that he is also a world-class lap steel player and got a little gig as well with pretty much THE best country band working today: Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives. And he is the BASS PLAYER there. 'Nuff said. There is talent and then there is Chris Scruggs!
Mr. Scruggs is the living embodiment of what I love about real country music. The guitar style and technique, the way it flows, the way a Tele goes hand and hand with a guit-steel, respect and appreciation for the music history. I've been a fan since the BR549 days.
My Mother took a deep dive into country beginning in the 1930's when she was teenager. She was a fan of Chris's mother Gail Davies. She saw Chris many times through the years in small venues and always enjoyed his musicianship. She talked with him some about her experiences too. Chris truly brightened her days. Cool dude he is.
He was a friend of a friend and an acquaintance of mine. He stood to gain nothing from me but made you feel like a friend of his. So talent, skill, knowledge completely set aside. Mr. Scruggs is a top notch guy.
This is Fender's best vid...Scruggs is not only a monster guitar player but an true antiquarian of country guitar styles. Kudos to the other two guys two guys for keeping quiet and just letting him give us a history/playing lesson.
Wow! I thoroughly enjoyed this video with Chris Scruggs as special guest. Chris has logged thousands of hours playing the clubs all over Nashville and his endless knowledge of country music history makes him a huge asset to country music. I have watched Chris play live in Nashville dozens of times. He plays a variety of instruments and plays them all quite well. And he is also a very humble and likeable guy. Thanks to Fender for having him as a guest. Please have Chris on again soon!!!
Chris is a national treasure. I'm a Marty/Superlative fan and have seen them live a few times. Chis is a humble guy only using a fraction of his talent on bass & vocal harmonizing. But man I could listen to him talk & play guitar into the wee hours...
Thanks Fender for inviting the inimitable Chris Scruggs to give a tour of country music guitar styles. I grew up on this music and still play it today. Videos like this show how exciting and deep country guitar really is. The more we get these sounds into young ears, the better chance we have of preserving it and letting it inform modern styles. There's a rich history worth digging into and Fender was a huge part of it. Thanks, Fender, for letting Chris show us how it's done..
Chris Scruggs could teach a master class in Country Music history...even down to the nuances of each great guitar player's instrument, rig and playing style...the guy is a walking encyclopedia. The Country Music Hall of Fame should record him teaching, just like you are doing here, for posterity.
There ain't many guitarist like Chris ,There are guys that can tell back grounds and not play well but Chris has both at a professor level ,I'M sure everyone else that clicked play on this thought ill give it 2 minutes and was wanting 2 hrs at category 4 .Fender would be foolish not to fully endorse Chris and give him more exposure so the American guitar history is kept alive and so is the names of the players. I bet you can't ask Chris a trick question and him not know the correct awnser, An amazing player and great historian. Thank you im going to look like a genius next band rehearsal just casually popping out styles and names just to mess with the lead guitarist and deflate his ego a little ,all in the name of guitar love .
With the Clark Kent Glasses, red shirt, yellow guitar and blue jeans Chris is pretty much Superman's hillbilly brother with guitar powers instead of heat vision.
I am from Muhlenberg County. My Great Grandfather was Earl Travis, first cousins with Merle. I was glad to hear Chris give the shoutout to our heritage.
Chris Scruggs is a fantastic player. It is criminal that he's not a household name and a huge star. As I understand it, the Fabulous Superlatives all agree that he's the best guitarist in the band--and he's the BASS player! The man is not only a supremely gifted musician but a treasure trove of country music historical facts. What a talent!
Chris' knowledge of the Southern and Central California country (and western) music scene in the 1940s through 1960s period is impressive. I grew up there at that time and every Friday night was live music night in our family. My father was a "hillbilly DJ" (as they were called in those days) in the 40s and that's how he met my mother. From the Maddox Brothers and Rose to guitar giants like Merle Travis and Joe Maphis, Chris seems to know them all. Pretty surprising for a Tennessee boy. Now we just need him to do a segment on the Fender steel guitars. Like Chris and Kayton Roberts, I'm a Dual Pro player, but I make room for the Stringmasters as well.
@@39MercFlathead Gary was his biological male parental unit. He is the only child of singer Gail Davies and songwriter Gary Scruggs. His maternal grandfather is the late country singer Tex Dickerson and his paternal grandfather is bluegrass banjo player Earl Scruggs.
I feel like I’ve been living in a cave somewhere unaware of so many great guitarists . Chris is amazzzzn. Also cuddos to Zac ASK ZAC for doing this stuff as well. Bringing names and faces out from behind the scenes.
I’m not a country player but my interest in Atkins and Travis style has been growing. There really is a wealth of information in this one video. Maybe because I come from a rock background IDK. But I found it so well laid out. Very nice primer into the country guitar styles. The playing is just great! Really like some of that California twang and will listen to some more of this. To me, everything sounds better with a little blues in it!
If you master the sonny Curtis parts in Buddy Holly and the crickets, and just one or two from doc Watson, throw the two skill sets together, and you'll rival Waylon Jennings.
This is the best Fender Play LIVE I’ve seen yet. My dad played guitar and I never knew a name for his style. Well y’all just told me, he played Western swing. Excellent show, lots of history from Chris. Thanks Fender Play,

Man did Chris's Vibrolux sound absolutely incredible or what?! That has got to be one of Fender's finest sounding amps- and that's sure as hell saying a lot!
I used to listen to BR549 all the time, so I was very excited when I discovered this. Chris is such an amazing guitarist and he does such an excellent job of breaking down and describing all of the different styles from Western Swing to Merle Haggard and Buck Owens. Very fun to listen to and watch and especially to hear Chris talk about all the different guitarists and how they developed their styles. It makes me glad I chose a Fender as my first electric guitar back in 1985 and have stuck with it ever since.
I've learned a lot from this video. Chris has so much class and amazing skill. The hosts were awesome and accommodating and great players also. Thanks to Fender for putting this show together. It was the BEST!
