- Chris Scruggs is the host of his own WSM radio show that runs on Friday nights after the Grand Ole Opry, fronts his own band, The Stone Fox Five, and is a member of the white-hot group backing Marty Stuart, The Fabulous Superlatives. He is also a busy session man with everyone from up-and-comers to hitmakers Kacey Musgraves & Sierra Ferrell, and more recently, he was the youngest member inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame.
In today's episode, Scruggs tells his own story, and along the way shares plenty of country music lore and spotlights 4 of his favorite guitars, a 1962 Telecaster, a 50s Fender double-neck steel, a 1959 Martin D-18, and a 1938 Gibson L5.

Riding on the Fabulous Superlative's bus would be like getting a master's degree in country music history. Everyone in that band is practically a country musicologist.
Chris Scruggs is great. His pedal steel sound is just fantastic.
That steel stuff he did was incredible. What a great, versatile, musician. Also sounds like he has an encyclopedic knowledge of Nashville history/music.
Robert's Western World is one of my favorite places on Broadway. My wife and I were in Nashville for a couple of days several years ago and we stopped in Robert's one Sunday afternoon and Chris was playing with Rachel Hester's band that afternoon. We had met her a few years before that when she was our tour guide at Studio B and we'd seen her the night before playing with Hoot, her father. We had a great time, but back to the story that Sunday afternoon. We had a table a row back and there were two women sitting there. Turns out that it was Chris's birthday and Gail Davies, his Mom was sitting there. I'd never made the connection between the two, but she did at least a couple of songs with Chris and Rachel's band and it was really great!
What a great interview. Chris is a remarkable person in terms of intelligence, personality and talent without even talking about his experience.
Thank you for having Chris Scruggs on! This tool me back to listening to my mother’s music in the mid 60’s, he is not just an outstanding musician he is also a historian.
I worked at a resort in the mid 2000's, Marty closed one night. I couldn't believe I was going to see cousin Kenny. Turns out this Buddy Holly looking dude was on guitar. Chris was filling in that night, blew me away. Later that night I sat at the bar, looked over, it was Chris. We talked for an hour about nothing, what a gentleman.
If you are a Fabulous Superlative you’ve arrived. He’s killer and has an encyclopedic knowledge just like Kenny Vaughan and the great Marty Stuart.
ZAC, you are killin me. Chris is obviously from another planet,Omg. Now I have to go get my MelBay book. The more I listen to these shows, I realize that the level of talent is amazing. As usual another great show. Thanks
Boom!
I don't think your Mel Bay book is going to help you. Mine didn't help me. 😂😂 You're right about the level of talent of Chris Scruggs. He's so far over my head, I can't even see him with the Hubble Telescope. 😂😂
@@notbraindead7298 he was like this since conception, hearing in the womb & in his DNA. So don't feel inadequate, some souls are exceptional & we get to watch & hear, Thank G^d for YT & those that put up videos! we all have our gifts...
My gawd, the section with Chris playing the double-neck steel is a primer for anyone wanting to get into that. Very inspiring, I’ve waited too long. Of course he makes it look easy but it gives us regular folks a lot of hope. Not to mention everything else he conveyed in this excellent interview. Thanks once again Zac and cheers to the amazing Chris Scruggs. What a national treasure.
Forgive me for never having heard of Chris Scruggs…. He blew me away…great player, encyclopaedic knowledge, and a wonderful personality. Thank you for this interview and your wonderful job of getting Chris going. You wound up the Energizer bunny.
I recently saw Chris play in Marty's band. He is a super talent, must-see musician whether he's a band sideman or whatever he's doing. Incredible real deal stuff
He's amazingly talented and a huge source of knowledge. I can't wait until I can watch this interview in full.
Chris is so great. Thanks Zac.
Chris Scuggs has it all. Makes me smile every time I see him play.
Chris is absolutely UNREAL. What a guy. I really look up to this guys playing. I could listen for hours an he's so down to earth. He's gotta go down in history as a legendary session cat!!
I couldn’t agree more!!
I may have made a comment earlier but I watched this again and really paid attention throughout the whole interview. Chris is a Nashville historian and is an encyclopedia of country music and all of the stars that made it what it is and who put Nashville on the map. And what a musician and guitar player! I really need to see this guy live, I’m sure he and his band mates are amazing. Thank you again Zac for a gem of an interview that is worth multiple viewings!
If it's possible for someone to be an extraordinary musician, a library of decades of music knowledge and to be a time machine that brings everything from yesterday right to your ears, it's Chris. I won't waste time pondering how much talent he has because I can't comprehend it; I'll just listen and smile. What a guy! What an amazing interview Zac - HOME RUN! You have a way of getting these treasures of music to open up, relax and be themselves. Just thanks for capturing these interviews - priceless!
An absolute treasure trove of an interview. Thank you!
OH HELL YEAH!
Earlier this year we randomly ran a 'Chris Scruggs Appreciation Weekend' over on Reddit's r/countrymusic. It was really interesting trying to dig up all the different things he's played on. Such a phenomenal musician.
Nashville is the perfect arrangement for a person of Chris Scruggs talent.
He can go on tour and rake in the bucks with Marty Stewart and the superlatives.
While not touring he is a high demand sessions musician.
Chris is very intelligent and he speaks his mind very effectively.
OK... This is the best interview I've ever seen. I love the detail, but the love for music and the sweet spirit of both you men make this a very, very special watch. Thank you so much for this!
Wow, thank you!
Thanks for having Chris on Zac ! I could listen to Chris play and talk all day. I'm a guy in my late 60's, so I grew up during the Beatles era, but my Dad was a huge bluegrass, hillbilly country western music guy. He was always listening to Hank Snow, Lefty Frizzell, Jimmy Rodgers, Little Jimmy D., Flatt & Scruggs, Del McCoury. Then later on as we were getting into Zeppelin, he was getting into guy's like Roger Miller, Marty Robbins, Roy Clark and Buck Owens. Chris is a complete package of talent with all that knowledge ! The future is safe
Simply amazing man and musician! I am so glad you finally got to interview Chris. He is like a country music encyclopedia and music book. I could listen to his wealth of knowledge all day long. Thanks Zac for all the great work you do for us.
Zac...Chris is the truest soul ...with the most honest roll...wow...thank you...would have been sweet to see you two jam together...what wonderful gifts you both are to the ear....discernible...true peace and string glory...thank you gentlemen
Chris is such an amazing player and historian....and so humble!!!
Fantastic show Zac, just awesome. Thanks!
@Chris Scruggs - I can’t wait to see you again with Marty and the band next week! I still rave to everyone about the show I saw in 2022. Completely top-tier! 🤠
Wow! Chris is so deserving of the musicians HOF. They are lucky to have him. Thank you Zac for showcasing such a talent.
Man I like this guy, both as a player and as a country music historian.
Among the countless great interviews on the TL, this has to be the best! Scruggs is not only a great player on whatever he picks up but a country music historian. Bravo!
Man, what an amazing talent!! Chris is like a walking encyclopedia of the people and places of the country music screen. Zac is the perfect host to ask all the right questions to bring out the extraordinary guest that Chris is.
Best interview I have heard yet! Thank you both!!
One amazing talented musician. Marty sure grateful having him as Superlative. One of the best even as his early age.
Another outstanding interview, thanks Zac feel very privileged to have access to this, what a great musician Chris is.
Great interview and playing!! Thank you!
It about time Scruggs finally
Got inducted into the country Hall of Fame .
Zak real Good Show Scruggs is
Real Down to Earth KAT .
Excellent. Loved his contribution to Rogers & Chris Sweetheart of the Rodeo tour with Marty & Co
Great episode, Zac! Chris is a great musician, and I was lucky enough to see him with Marty Stuart! Absolutely loved the slide part!
Thank you Zac for having this discussion with Chris. I've known from the first few times I saw him with Marty that he was something special but you gave him a chance to really open up about his musical life. He caught my ear with his steel playing - I have a particular interest in all things with finger picks, bends, and slides. He has really dug deep into his world of music and entertainment and to hear his enthusiasm for all of it is refreshing.
Thanks a lot . Heard him in Gstaad last September with Marty . I didn't get a chance to get a picture with Clarence's guitar :)
What a joy to listen to this! Thank you, Zac, for all the work you do to make these interviews happen, and to Chris Scruggs for being so willing to share his story and his knowledge.
Glad you enjoyed it!
great interview and Chris Scruggs is the kashiznit!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
EXCELLENT MUSICIAN!!!!
That was a load of FUN! Thank you! I could listen to Chris talk all day and I get the impression that he could if you all had enough time to record it.
Regret not meeting him when I lived in town in the late 90's.Listening to this interview makes me think how much he & are alike and what we both focus on and enjoy.I've always been a Frontman too,& I'm liking it now that I'm doing more side work on pedal steel or rhythm guitar.
He'd have been about 16 or 17 :)
Chris and Zac are killing it..their knowledge is like catching up on country history 30 years in an hour and a half..digging it
A better interview I have not witnessed,,,,Pure Gold,,,thanks to ALL involved
Much thanks!
This was such a pleasure and an honour to actually hear Chris share his amazing experience any talent with us. I saw them live in Leeds UK in 2022! What an amazing experience! Love them all! So down to earth! Thank you so much! ❤
Our pleasure!
Loved seeing this pop up. Was lucky to see Marty and the Superlatives recently in Glasgow, KY. I wasn't that familiar with Chris prior to the show but left there burning up google and youtube to hear more of him. Thanks for the interview Zac! I love sharing your musical "lane."
Thanks for listening
Thanks 4 sharing this fantastic interview with us. I love hearing about country music history! 🎶 ...jimi
Great interview with another genious ! Chris Scruggs rocks !! So does Zac Childs !!
Such a talented man!!! Thanks Zac and Chris!!
Pretty speechless, satisfied, and tickled too!
What a treasure both as a musician and historian!
Fads fade, reverence is eternal!
Love Chris Scruggs, what a nice person and amazing musician. I have always wondered why he doesn’t say much about his grandfather Earl Scruggs, as a banjo player he has always been my hero! Anyway I think Chris is and amazing person. Great interview.
what a fantastic interview...anyone who has seen Marty and the superlatives is in for such a great experience. each guy contributes and its clear they are having a great time. all so very versatile and talented ..truly music royalty period ! not just traditional country . God bless
Wow. Fabulous interview! Thanks so much. A treasure-trove of info.
Wow, Chris is seriously amazing. And just to see Zac smiling in awe while Chris is playing... you know you're among guitar lovers.
Absolutely fantastic interview! Thanks for featuring Chris.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Chris is amazing.
Wow! What a treat. I've long admired Chris and always on the look out for something new involving him. His radio show is still online and there's well over 100 episodes to be enjoyed for free. Also nice to hear Chris say how for his 30th he treated himself to that gorgeous L5 Gibson. Especially as last Christmas I did likewise for my 65th and bought a Fender Stringmaster (2x8 string) console lap steel. However, even if I lived for thousand more years it's clear I'll never come close to the brilliance displayed in this wonderful interview!
Thanks Zac.
I always tune in when I see Chris on a show and this one was killer. Great job Zac.
Man Oh Man! Chris Scruggs is a Nashville National Treasure! Such a versatile player! He is a musical force! Much like his grandfather! I’m a MAJOR fan!
Excited to watch this! Can't say enough wonderful things about Chris as a human, as a musician, as a historian, and more. Just a downright great feller.
This is just fantastic. In depth conversation by two very talented and knowledgeable folks!
Much appreciated!
Great interview! Thanks to Otis Gibbs for turning me on to Chris Scruggs (and Kenny Vaughn).
In awe of the talent, knowledge and the humility.
Chris is a walking encyclopedia of country music and a super nice guy. I met him one Sunday night at the Stone Fox and had a great long chat which I will never forget. I started with "I don't think you've played anything newer that 1956 tonight". That started the floodgates. He's a gem!
Chris is an immense talent, multi instruments. Steel, Guitar, Bass etc... Met him a few times on lower Broadway, really laidback nice guy.
Thank you for full Chris Scruggs Interview!
This is the coolest stuff I have seen in a decade. Two Bonafide heros of mine and one is in awe of the other. Way to do it fellers.. love you cool cats.
Zac, I think that is one of your best interviews. Chris is so talented. Great video. Thanks.
I've always been interested in the history of country players. Love Clarance Whites style but I liked it better on The Nortorious Byrd Brothers album. Love the Rickenbacker 12 in various sounds capes. Love Witchy sounding Bluegrass!
Many thanks for yet another great episode, featuring a most talented person. I had the pleasure of meeting him in an Italian restaurant, in Birmingham, England. A very gracious person.
Awesome interview. I saw it happen when that Rick fell over in Paradiso Amsterdam. I didn't know it was broken.
Brilliant...those bends behind the bar are just crazy...
This honestly is the third time I have watched this interview. Just a fantastic insight into one of the greats.
Scruggs is one elegant fellow. I enjoyed every moment, Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it
Best channel on RUclips,, like a great movie you can watch countless times and still learn something new every time you watch it again!!!!🎸🎸🎸
Wow, thanks!
Chris playing the pedal steel at the end is mind blowing. I LOVE what he's playing there, banjo sounds and steel drums/marimbas. Too cool.
I got to see Chris with Marty Stuart in 2019. Amazingly talented as is everyone in that band!
Each interview becomes my favorite, this one is no exception. Great job, questions I was thinking of, you asked! What a talented guy Chris is. Thanks Zac, you're the best!
Best most informative interview I have seen. Chris is a wonderful musician and wealth of knowledge on real country music. I watched this and learned so much more about music I love and played for 60 years. Fabulous job by Zac as a interview moderator.
Great interview!! Chris is a national treasure!!
Wow. Just terrific. Ya' gotta love what Chris brings to the table. He's such a special player and music historian. Off-the-charts tremendous!
Thank you Thank you Thank you Zac and Chris… just incredibly informative, entertaining and inspiring. Cheers Marty from Melbourne 🇦🇺
Great great interview! We are going to need you to close the loop by getting Marty Stuart on here. Well done!
What a choice session. Love it!
Thanks so much!
I liked Chris the first time I heard him and it wasn't to long before I started looking for him and now he's become my most respected musician.
What an episode! Love all the stories and tidbits but dang the playing portion was a full coarse meal in itself.
A lot of knowledge with these guys!!!
Wow. What an excellent interview. Chris us such a pro and genuine person.
Zac your calm presence makes for great interviews.
We heard Marty and the Fabulous Superlatives in Boulder last summer - what a blast! Chris is terrific. Thanks Zac!
Our pleasure!
Great interview. It's great to see a young guy carrying on with older techniques. The steel section hit close to home. I met all those pickers he mentioned, through my dad, who started playing steel professionally around 1948. Chris is absolutely correct about bar technique (my old man had tons of it). Even after he went to pedals, after Webb Pierce's "Slowly" featuring Bud Issac was released, he continued developing his bar hand. After all he thought Jerry Bryd was the very best and who would argue with that.
What a talent!
What a great interview, Zac! Love Chris Scruggs! Articulate, well-spoken; great player! Seems like a nice guy!
He is
Love this interview. Brilliant musician. Loved that bit of “Foot of the Bed” too. Thanks!
Love the Fabulous Superlatives.
The best!
@@AskZac I forwarded a video to some of my hard rock friends and they were left speechless. A Class Act to inspire all. Thanks for the interview.
What a great interview. I am taking this one in bites. It's so fun to hear his story!
Great interview with lots of good advice!🎶
I got the opportunity of meeting Chris and getting his autograph.📝
He was so kind and I can’t thank him enough.❤️
I met Chris a few years ago as the bass player with Marty's band. I was lucky enough to talk with him with quite a while and he was just great to talk to. He can play most anything it seems and then the other night we watched the movie "Country Strong" and there was Chris playing in the band!
This is a great interview, on the back of this 've checked out some music I'd not heard before. Brilliant stuff Zac and what a talent Chris is.
