@@TBlanktim asked Marty about that 14 years old on the Porter Wagoner show and he giggles he said Earl hit a bad chord to see if he was paying attention, but then he said Dolly was flirting with him off stage, then he walked away from the Mic not really sure what he said but it was about Dolly Parton.
Marty Stuart has done more to preserve country musics past than anyone I know... I believe he has over 6000 guitars, and many other important pieces of memorabilia spanning from the 40’s onward.... I think he should have a special night and given a “lifetime achievement award” ...and much more for all he means to country music...
Marty and the Superlatives, especially Kenny, are national treasures. Kenny's interviews with Otis Gibbs are the best music interviews I've ever seen. He's met hundreds of the best popular musicians of the last half of the 20th century and he doesn't have a bad word to say about a single one of them.
I'm an old rock and roll guy but when I want to play along with good musicians I go to youtube to play with the guys from Nashville and these guys are some of the best and I keep coming back to them.
Marty is extremely humble. While I also know that Kenny Vaughn is a virtuoso on guitar, Mr. Stuart is pretty amazing himself on that B Bender Clarence Telecaster. Love you Marty! 🎸
This guy is magic. Knows everyone and everything. The true savior of traditional country and country rock. Could listen to him talk and work for hours. Keep rockin.
It's amazing how The Byrd's "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" from 1968 influenced so many musicians. I hated country music until I heard it and it still endures as one of the greatest country music records ever made. The fact that it was made by a folk, pop rock band of long hairs was a wake up call for many of us. Later I learned every song they played on that record.
This is gold. I love hearing Marty talk about how he got started and how he learned to play. I have heard Marty talk about Sweetheart of the Rodeo before, and that's why I bought it. It's amazing to see the family tree that flows from the Byrds into so many different bands and artists. Thanks, Joe. I can't wait for parts 3 and 4. I wish Marty would do a show and tell with his mandolin.
I should also add that I have several albums with Chris Hillman playing with various other musicians and they’re all good. Basically, if you see Chris Hillman in the credits, just buy it.
@@Maydoggie You got that right, Steve. Chris Hillman is a true American treasure. Either directly or indirectly, he is probably responsible for more of my favorite music than anyone else I can think of.
Just stumbled on this and sat right down to watch. There are two folks, same age, Wynton Marsalis and Marty Stuart who were fortunate enough to be there before the *old days* were over, and to understand and absorb what they experienced. As they have matured they have shared their treasure with us, innovated and preserved, educated us and given us remarkable good times. While remaining nice guys. I feel privileged to live in times when their music and stories and wisdom and experience is available to us via the internet, even when we are confined to home. Thank you for helping to preserve and spread the good news. 💕🙋😷🎵🎶
When I listen to various things I usually end up saying to myself; "that was a waste of time", but Marty holds my attention to every word. He's a wealth of information on Rockabilly/County etc. Love the stories of him traveling on the bus at a young age.
I was lucky enough to catch the Marty & the original Superlatives in Augusta, GA a few years back. Can't wait to see the New Superlatives as soon as this pandemic lets up.
I got so excited when I saw this new segment. So much bonus info. Marty's band is more than Nashville country, their stripped down sound keeps the Bakersfield Sound alive too. Marty is such a Historian, I knew Chris was into knowing a lot of the history and how they played etc. Imagine the books or miniseries Marty and Chris could do. Not long after I moved to Nashville, I learned there were key people that I could learn from to understand the heart and soul of Nashville. For some reason, it was important for me to really understand the roots. If I had to get it down to four foundations, it was Marty, Eddie Stubbs on Sunday night, Vince Gill and Marion James. I really paid attention to those four. It just so happened that I became best friends with Marion the last few years before her passing. I learned about and met so much of the R&B community through her.
In older times people were said to find their "calling" -- the great lifelong work they were meant to do, a sort of higher duty. Listening to Marty Stuart is so encouraging, to know that some people are still answering that call.
I had the pleasure of attending the 50th Anniversary of Sweetheart of The Rodeo concert in Raleigh North Carolina in October of 2018. One one of the BEST concert I have ever been to.
Marty + Fabulous Superlatives are playing my not country town this weekend in April of 2023. Dream come true getting to see this band + I'm a classic rock guy. Totally surprised they are playing this gig I never thought I'd get to see them + especially within a few miles of my home . Be safe guys little city has it's share of shootings + crime.
Sweetheart of the Rodeo was an eye opener for me as well, when it first came out. So glad to hear that influence in Way Out West, which I think is one of the finest albums to ever come out, in any genre.
Great segment Joe, Marty is what I think every musician should be! Inspired and inspiring! His enthusiasm for great musicianship is very apparent and I feel that totally explains the Superlatives! The Marty Stuart Show is truly awesome! Thanks!💫
My wife and I saw them a few weeks ago and it was incredible. The name of the band says it all. They are one of the last real country music bands out there.
One the best interviews I've ever watched Joe asks a question then genuinely listens to answer without interruption thank you Joe well done. Way to many interviewers interrupt and are to busy thinking of the next question to listen to the reply. You've got hand it to Marty (and Kenny Vaughan) they are very generous when doing interviews plenty of interesting stories and a great wealth of country music knowledge.
lucky you getting to meet Mr Marty who owns my fav guitar i have ever heard. his band is the only one I would love to see that still has all the members still alive but must admit i miss Pauls smile
Just saw Marty & the boys yesterday at AMT in Lancaster, Pa. & they blew the roof off! I swear, this man and this band are without a doubt, the most under rated group performing today! The effortless massive talent & chemistry of each of these gentleman is truly a sight to behold....just an amazing show by a true legend in Marty Stuart, thank God for this man and all he's done for country music....cant wait for the memoirs!..keep on keepin it real brother and see y'all in July at Penns Peak!
Love Marty. Kenny Vaughan is a cool dude. I was on the sound crew at a festival for Marty and the guys and just missed the chance to have Kenny sit in with my band. He was at our gig as a spectator on Friday night, and I crewed for them on Saturday. He asked if we were playing again on Saturday night and unfortunately I had to tell him no. He would have been very welcome to come sit in if we would have played again. When they launched into Mr. Spaceman I was floored. I played that song for years with one of my bands.
Love the Superlatives. Not only keeping the traditional sounds alive, but carving their own niche. These dudes is LEGENDS now. They play songs, where I ask myself, "Where's the pedal steel?" Of course, SOMETIMES they have a pedal steel.
Thank you so much for these interviews Joe. I've been a subscriber for quite some time but don't recall commenting until Part 1. I love, and respect, the history you are preserving.

There couldn't be a better pairing than these two individual great talents. The knowledge and talents here is absolutely incalculable, yet the honesty, openness and humility makes you feel like a welcomed friend.
Once again, a great interview with a real musician who really loves making records and performing for the audience. His musical roots run deep. From Lester Flat and earl Scruggs. (Beverly Hillbilly’s theme to the Eagles!) Awesome. If you really don’t love making, you should be doing something it. I know the business is not perfect. But Marty found a way to make it work and make a lot of audiences happy.
I’m 64 and have watched Marty intently over my entire musical life! Kinda the same with Ricky Skaggs and Jerry Douglas, who I met in the mid 70’s. I LOVE music. Dad and uncle were both national level Irish fiddlers. By 10 yrs I was first clarinet in a local big band and had been reading music almost as I learned to read writing ! At 12 I took my first guitar lessons. I stayed for the entire 12 sessions and HATED it! But it was enough to make me LOVE playing in my bedroom. It’s been the centre of my life for as long as I have memories of living! I live a long way from “the concert circuit “ in the interior of British Columbia, now, but I’m hoping to see a Fabulous Superlatives show in Vancouver or maybe Seattle. I’ll make the 16 hr drive! I’m a HUGE Kenny Vaughan fan - he’s my fav Tele man. And he’s a humble, wonderful intelligent man. Marty is intimidating, but Kenny, I could have a beer or two with! Thanks for this! I’m late to the party, but I loved watching this interview - well done! Peace
I had to chime in when Marty described hearing "Sweetheart Of The Rodeo". "Fusion" is a word commonly tossed around when it comes to the merging of Jazz with Rock. But rarely is it more apropos than when describing "Sweetheart Of The Rodeo" by The Byrds. It is a fusion record in every sense of the word.
Just a class act. I was privileged to spend an afternoon working with him 1997 or so and he was just totally cool in every way. Thanks again for being you Marty. God bless always. 🎸🎸🎸 Also a big hey ! to Kenny. Got to know him a little as well later on down the road. Always so kind and genuine and what a player.
He - *Marty* - has and plays *Clarence* *White's* " *White* / *Parsons* *B* - *Bender* " , and play it he does! I took in the *BEST* show in decades back in April 2022 (15.04 ) at the La Mirada Theatre; a birthday present from two of me friends. *Marty* and the band *The* *Fabulous* *Superlatives* are one hell of a group! Non-stop entertainment, exploring multiple genres (Surf instrumentals! Damn it! Fantastique!), with their take on the *Count* *Five* *Psychotic* *Reaction* for the encore!
I LOVED THIS! When Marty started talking about Chris, it brought back great memories. Around Christmas of 2014 (I think), I got a call about possibly being a candidate to replace Paul. Marty called me personally to let me know someone else got the gig but I always respected him immensely for that. Most artists wouldn't do that at all. I still have his voice mail. Your videos are always great to watch, Joe and I appreciate what you do!
Cool, Marty is a very nice guy. Worked with his band and crew many times over the years. He is surrounded by great people. No bad apples in that bunch ever. Same with his wife.thanks Joe. another great video for an old guy like me to enjoy.
As a Michigan State alum, I wonder: did they play for thousands of fans at Jenison Fieldhouse or Fairchild Auditorium ... or for a few hundred at Erickson Kiva? Being a pioneer isn't always popular.
This is a Great One, Mr. C! Was honored last October to meet up with Kenny and Dave Roe at Sun Records and we cut about 7 of Johnny’s songs in a two hour session. Great guys! 🎸🎙🖤

The Byrds influenced my listening and playing. They were the perfect blend of folk rock and country played so well together. Icouldlisten to Marty and Kenny all day. What a powerhouse of guitars there.
Man this is good stuff. I can't wait for parts 3 & 4 of this interview. I REALLY hope PBS will run all the Marty Stuart Show episodes so that those of us that don't have the RFD cable network can see them.
Guys like Marty and Vince Gill etc have such a nice, articulate way of storytelling and have tack sharp memories. It’s so important that these videos are produced as the years get on here. Adding one more “Thanks Joe” for doing what you do - excellent work
On my only visit (so far) to Nashville I wandered around lower Broadway in the afternoon, went into Robert’s Western World and watched Chris Scruggs playing with Rachel and Hoot Hester. As I was leaving Chris rushed out to put more money in the parking meter which I got a chuckle out of.

“I don’t care about politics”. Thank you, Marty. I wish more entertainers shared your view.
Great story Alf, thanks for sharing that.
