Plus that hit to the head during the robbery in saint denis when they crash the train in the town didnt help his mental state.

When my mom was alive, she used to love watching me play Red Dead Redemption despite having no interest in gaming at all. So much so that when the sequel came out, she got it for me as soon as possible. When I had no desire to play the sequel because of the emphasis on story, she got angry. Now, I don’t think I can play the sequel because playing it without her watching wouldn’t feel right. I plan on revisiting this game to honor her memory. RIP mom, there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about you.

Words are repeated very often by Dan Houser. He creates these motifs in his writing that was stronger in the first game than the second but still there. That man wrote 2 Great American Novels in my view. The script of RDR1 can be analyzed like a Western movie and it stands up and then some. It's more like a really good book.

Comparing John from RD1 and John from RD2:
RD1 John is quiet, prone to long silences and thoughtful sentences. He laughs more, jokes around with others, plays the part of a good citizen quite well. I was actually surprised how relaxed he seemed in the first ten minutes of the game. He knows when to pull his punches, and when to really put the heat on the iron. Of course, he’s still John, a particular kind of stupid.
RD2 John is angry, impatient, full of protest and complaints. He’s kind of what you expect an outlaw to be like. He struggles to talk, to say what he’s thinking. Quite frankly, he’s immature, and was often the victim of “wrong place wrong time,” resulting in his sour outlook on life. I guess Dutch had him convinced the world was the problem, not him, and as the gang’s era drew to a close he struggled to find who he was outside of that. Towards the end of it, he still complained and was quick to anger, but I think ranch life and responsibility towards his family really helped him grow up.
As far as character growth, as proven, I think Rockstar did a very fair job of that. Yes, the John from the prequel and the John from the sequel are vastly different. That’s what makes a good story, to me. A person that learns from his mistakes is a common trope, but a person that actually, emotionally, and visibly changes as a result of his experiences is quite the character.
Watching this reminded me how much I loved John, playing RD2 made me forget, and I wish Arthur was at least hinted at once, just once, by John after he dies. I wish John from the sequel had the chance to say thank you, or come to peace with his death. I feel that’s more than owed.

I will admit one thing the second game doesn’t have compared to this was the cutscene ambience. It was quiet, hardly any music, and John and the other characters talked and spoke like they were in a 1960’s western film. The next game went for a more modern styled cutscenes because they wanted to focus a lot more on the story and characters, but I think this game was all about that aesthetic. Kinda like how The Lost and Damned felt like Sons of Anarchy or Franklin’s missions in GTA V felt like a hip hop drama

Jack, as a narrative device, is perfectly fine.
But there are two main issues I have with him:
      1) John Marston becomes such an absolute icon throughout the game, it's hard to let him go. Seeing as we barely have any story missions with Jack, we do not really get to see what he is like, what he thinks, his humour, his demeanor, his outlook on life, etc... All we see is an angry, vengeful boy. While this may have been intentional (john wanted a better life for his son, but jack ended up just another gunslinger with a mean streak), it's a somewhat bitter pill to swallow after having played as John for 95% of the game.
      2) Jack has no respect for his horse, and it makes me hate him.

The fact that John got off of a Steamboat in Blackwater clearly indicates that he was elsewhere. And seeing as Saint Denise is the only other place that had a Steamboat tells me that John had to of been in Saint Denise. Rdr 2 really opens a person's eyes to Rockstars plans. This proves that they already was already planning on making another addition to rdr and that their plan was, way before they released teasers, to go back in the past. Truly hope that they find a way to make another addition to the RDR series because this was, by far, the game series that put Rockstar on the map

Such a great game. I actually played red dead 2, first.... Because I had learned that it is a prequal, and that it gives ultra thorough character development and depth to the personas, builds the story bigtime for red dead 1. I have beaten rdr2 100% on my 3rd absolute playthrough lol. I will say, part 2 is the far superior game over part 1... Graphics (obviously, because of it being released more currently), the gameplay, the thorough gains from hunting (event though I try to kill no animal unless I have to), all the awesome stuff the fella makes for you when you give him pelts, furs, etc... All the insane amounts of articulate side interactions throughout the glorious map ... Rdr2 is phenomenal ... I was a bit "meh" about part 1 UNTIL. The map begins began to open up!!! Once I could cross into Mexico in part 1, it changed how I saw the game. It's incredible considering the era it was released . Mexico looks stunning and when you ride out to the absolute furthest lines of the map, you truly get the sense of being alone on a horse in the middle of nowhere. Thanks for making this cool video!!!
