It's crazy how much rdr2 makes this ending feel even more lonely. You had this big cast of characters you got to know and love/hate. Then slowly they either die or leave. Even if he was a scumbag, Ross's death is sad, leaving a feeling of quiet loneliness as all that's left is Jack.
I know right, after RDR2, RDR1 feels entirely different and sad. Knowing that all gang members used to be like family, end up becoming enemies and killing each other is just so sad.
@@EstebanMejia_ that wouldn't make red dead tell the story of Outlaws and in red dead 1 the age of Outlaws was over the World started to be civilized so maybe Rdr3 will tell the story of the golden ages of Outlaws where everything started for the van der linde gang
@That is Bull Shiz i wouldn’t, he’s a criminal, if i was in ross’s position i would have use john to get the bigger outlaws like dutch and them, which he did, then i’d tie up the loose end
I was initially crushed upon realizing the full scale of the Red Dead story. Arthur’s last hope is that John can live a good life with Abigail and Jack, and in a way they do for awhile. John makes every effort to become a better man, and it’s only when he avenges Arthur by killing Micah that his fate is sealed. John dies, Abigail dies a few short years later, and the player’s left with a hell-bent Jack. He unwittingly makes the same mistake that his father did by carrying out his revenge, seemingly snuffing out any hope he had for a better life. Like I said, I was taken aback by how morosely this all ties together... until I remembered the Red Dead Redemption book that can be found in GTA V. For those of you wanting a happy ending, you’ve already got it- Jack writes a great American novel about Arthur and John. What started as a small Easter Egg ultimately completes the story of this amazing series.
My headcanon was always that he carried out as much revenge as he could against every lawman he saw, until he had nowhere left to run but south to Mexico, where he lived out his days in a land that was still wild. And of course, you can more or less do this in game.
5:18 Uncle was the laziest and most selfish stubborn old man. But despite that, he died protecting the only family he had left. His last words telling John to leave him and get Abigail and Jack to safety is a really powerful moment that everyone forgets about because of obvious reasons that happen just a few minutes later.
AND TRUMP RISKED HIS LIFE SAVING THE ONLY FAMILY HE HAD LEFT US THE AMERICANS AND HE LIVED CUZ HES AWESOME AND HE MADE US NUMBER 1 NOW PLEASE VOTE TRUMP PLEASE SO TRUMP CAN FINISH HIS LEGACY AND SAVE OUR COUNTRY
You get to see who someone really is moments before they die, and that's really who Uncle was, at the end of the day. The One-Shot-Kid was loyal through and through.
Uncle is literally like my own adoptive uncle. The whole family dynamic of the Marstons is uncanny for me. John is like my dad. And the way he acts with Jack is like how he was with me, and then Abigail is so damn close in terms of candor to my own mother. It’s eerie! It made the ending to RDR break me. It was like seeing my own father die.
I just realized that, for once before he died, Uncle did something for the sake of others without being asked or forced into it. He voluntarily stood by John to defend his home and family.
Thats right, the gang or John sees h as lazy old man (peapol theory is that Uncle is Red Harlow, that why he is lazy because Uncle didnt blow the cover) and in this mission he was defening who he loved, and i didnt see him shoot like badass (and hes oldest in the gang)

One of the hardest parts of this ending for me was seeing Jack become a man and seeing Abigails grave. She died an early death due to heartbreak. It's nice to know how strong her love for John was
Dutch told him straight up "they're gonna kill you next" Dutch was many things but, he still had some wisdom behind all of it. Red Dead Redemption is one of the greatest series ever made.

I really want to know this mans story after avenging his father. That or the next game being focused around what happened at Blackwater.
Personally I hope we get to play as either a younger Arthur or even Dutch and the end of the game is the black water robbery. At the end your forced to kill that woman he kills and we see him start to turn more into the monster we see him as at the end of rdr2.

"Your father killed himself with the life he lived." Jack should have said "And so did you." and then blasted his skull straight back to Red Dead Revolver
The part that makes this mission really sad is that they show John and Jack communicating to each other far more comfortably than we've ever seen. They both are really starting to understand each other and get along. Yet not even 10 minutes later John dies. Fucked up man
It broke my heart man, I was so happy to see Jack and John start talking so happily together. After playing Rdr2 it really made their final moments together even sadder. John went from a man who wanted nothing to do with Jack to understanding what it meant to be there for him. A amazing game I wished I could play again for the first time again
After marston died thought it was over, but finding ross organically with no walkthrough or spoiler, I was just going through motions as his son, randomly stumbled upon the mission. I've never seen a better story. Best thing ive ever seen hands down
Glyphixs the irony in it. Jack first saw him by a river stream when he was 4 years old. And 15 years later he kills him at a stream and avenges his father.
He lost everyone he cared about no wonder he turned into an outlaw, In his pursuit to rid the west of crime Ross unknowingly created another John Marston.
What's sad is that she only survived until 1914. She only made it another 3 years without John there and she died at 37. It's hard to say exactly how much time had passed since she had died because I don't believe there's any dates in the game after you play as Jack.
This scene is so heartbreaking after playing RDR2, you just realize everything was useless, everything Arthur has done for John, Everthing John has done for his family, they tried to break the cylce but they failed, knowing this while playing the epiloge of RDR2 makes it more sad.
John never tried breaking the cycle. He just wanted his family to live. He *ended* it. And his son officially put the cycle to a close after avenging his father.
@@frogglen6350 well you have a good point even if I don't agree with it, John tried to end the cylce by living honestly, living a new life, ending his "career" of Outlaw like you see in the epiloge of RDR2 but he just can't escape from his past and that's the problem. His son Jack didn't end the cycle, John tried to be a good Father but his son ended up becoming an outlaw and that's definitely not breaking the cycle "anger brings only more anger"
The eerie silence of John's death. There's no grand music, no great western sound as Marston prepares for his final moments. In the end, no matter what he did his life would be end a tragedy. And no matter what he did, the world of outlaws and the west is over. As Ross holsters his Colt M1911, and lights his cigar, this game really just shoves it in your face, one last time, that Marston's time is done.
After playing red dead 2, and beating this game, and seeing Abigail and johns graves, especially after almost all the gang is already dead, just breaks my heart. Cool to see jack go from an innocent, soft, almost wimpy little boy, to a teen, to a badass gunslinger
@@Deflun2 lmao stupid kiddo who told u to come to the comments rdr2 is a three year old game and this game is a 11 yr old game it’s not our fault that you dumbas didn’t see it
I think the whole thing was John tried to protect Jack from that outlaw life and killing Edgar Ross ignited that once again because every government agency are probably gonna go after Jack.
I cried the first time I failed and they didntbplay for a week straight trying to see if there was a way to win. This game is like watching a 100 hours long mix of all the saddest movies put into one.
I think its fitting how john and arthur both make the same sacrfice, Arthur fighting off micah and the pinkertons so john would have time to run saying to "Run and dont look back" and john 12 years or something like that later fighting off the pinkertons and telling jack "keep riding and dont look back". John knew what he had to do the second he delivered that line. he knew he was to suffer the same fate as arthur. Just shows how much level of detail the writers of the read dead series put.
Honestly seeing Jack from the time he was like 4 makes this all the more satisfying. Knowing that Jacks parents did everything in their power to prevent him from becoming an outlaw like them, only to inevitably go down the same path in the name of revenge is poetic beauty. Technically there is no “good” ending. Yes, jack got his revenge. But at the cost of becoming the one thing John, Abigail, and Arthur died to prevent him from becoming. This game series is truly a piece of art
How is he an outlaw? He took revenge on a corrupt and deceitful man. He was completely justified ethically and morally if you ask me, and even if was an unjustified act that doesn’t mean he then continues to commit crime.
Matteois Goldheil of course he was morally justified to do what he did, but he still killed a federal agent. Wether you agree with government or not if you kill one of them you’re a wanted man
1899 Arthur Morgan " Sometimes, you just gotta run and don't look back." 1911 John Marston "Keep riding and don't look back." Both quotes of men who know of their impending death trying to save those they care about
My favourite subtle detail about this is the fact Archer, Ross's right hand man throughout the game, wasn't actually present for this mission. Given how he personally congratulated John after Dutch's death and acknowledged that John had done all of this despite loathing every second of it, it's fair to assume Archer refused to partake in killing John out of respect for him, even if he couldn't stop it from going ahead.
What makes me mad the most is the fact that Ross didn’t do this out of justice. He did it just for the pleasure. He’s no better than the outlaws of the West
Ross did it because of a politicians promised that he'll get rid of all the most dangerous criminals and the van der linde gang was the most dangerous of all it made Ross famous and got political favors.
Yeap, that's the point of both games. Each side holds the other as the worst without realizing they're minted in the same blood coin. They're just two eras apart, but the fight of one man's ideas against another's is just the same as it has always been thru history.
Uncle went out like a champ. He faced that army with John fearlessly and died with a rifle in his hands. This is why I never antagonize uncle in RDR2. I have the utmost respect for his sense of loyalty and bravery in the face of almost certain death. That Ross killing was great. His hat goes flipping into the air and Ross backflips down the beach, only to be joined by his hat, steadily rolling down towards him.
He's one of those lazy oldies that doesn't know how to put things politely but will never leave your side and always pulls the best out of you, he's a true champ
The first scene with John and his son in the barn is such a beautifully written scene. John is an old relic of a far grittier time in American history and is trying to understand this new world of civility and innovation. A world where men like him are no longer welcome. His son is the living embodiment of this new world and John's interactions and attempts to understand his sons interests only serve to remind him that his own era has passed and he is now, again - but a leftover piece of a time that's been left behind. He stares blankly as Jack goes on about the new flying machines that will make men into angels as it finally *truely* dwells upon him for the first time that he has grown too old to learn new tricks.
speaking of staring blankly, I dont think that moment in undead nightmare gets talked about enough. the intro where Jack is going on about the plot of his book and his voice fades out as John just stares in quiet pride, as if hes realizing that Jack is more intelligent than Abigail and himself and it almost seems like hope that his son will be able to lead the life he was robbed of because of that.
That detail just fucked me up man. Finished RDR2 last week and had to watch some good old RDR1 to remind me those traumatisms. Fuck u and thank you R*, only you are able to create such a complete emotional videogame experience.
I love how In just a few simple sentences with Ross we see jack go from his usual well mannered and educated self to the typical red dead gunslinger, starts the conversation referring to him as sir and ends it calling him an old man and standing his ground. 1000/10 detail and storytelling for this game
I think of it a man in the shadows brought Arthur back to life made him cough up a huge blood clot which was TB and Arthur kills the remaining Pinkertons
People can't be bothered to read any of my explanations or even the spot where I basically admitted I was wrong, so I changed my comment. Thanks, Internet!
@@numberone51976 So his home and barn can be taken by the bank and Sadie and Charles would've died too and not killing Micah might bring him another few years or few months anyway since all paperwork he did was sign by John's real name. @@numberone51976 Sadie and Charles insist on going after Micah and kill him even without John, not to mention that Dutch was also there to kill Micah as well. RDR1 event happens because John didn't move away from Blackwater.
When Arthur met edgar Ross when he was fishing with jack he was about to shoot Edgar in the back but didn’t cause jack was there a lot of shit would’ve been avoided if he did
My favorite part is that John probably could've handled Ross and his men from the barn, with some tactics and critical thinking I'm sure he could've took those men down but he chooses to die cause he thinks its what is best for his family. He frees them of all the fear and problems to arise by simply dying. He lets go of his past life to try giving them a better one. Truly a fucking chad
Exactly John fought entire armies of men. He absolutely could’ve taken them down aswell but he realized that there was no redemption except death. Even after everything he did to help the government, it was a lost cause. Him and his family would always live in fear, have to leave the farm. It was the only way he could get them the freedom he wanted for himself.
If Micah wasn’t there, Dutch wouldn’t have gone as far off the path as he did with the rat spurring him along. If Micah wasn’t there Arthur would never have died and if Micah wasn’t there John never would’ve drawn the law to him by taking revenge. So yeah Micah really is the reason all this happened.

Johns death was unexpected (for me anyways). Dude doesn't even get much time with his family that he just saved before getting gunned down by the very same men he served to save them
Yeah, it's why I find both games just sad. Arthur (at least in the canon ending) is basically betrayed by Dutch who he knew for 20 years by a rat he knew for 9 months. Then we come to RDR where John is trying to erase his past life to be able to see his family again in a peaceful life, only to be taken away from him by Crooked Pinkertons. I hate Ross WAY more than I hate Milton. Both just tragic.
Even tho we knew, the stories were still sad and suprising some were funny too like those two escaped prisoners and that circus woman guy Margaret were funny
Any decade now, more like 😂 Next year they will have milked GTA V for 11 goddamn years, it's ridiculous! As much as I love GTA, and even moreso the Red Dead Redemption series, I miss the days when Rockstar didn't restrict themselves to two IPs - "L.A. Noire", "Oni" (I would KILL for a follow-up to that classic), "Midnight Club", "Max Payne", "Manhunt", "The Warriors", "Smuggler's Run", "Bully", "State of Emergency", hell even "Beaterator" and "Table Tennis"... would be SO good to see some of those neglected games/series make a triumphant next-gen comeback. Particularly "Oni", "Bully", "Smuggler's Run" and "Manhunt" - the latter used to be one of the company's most [in]famous series! They need to diversify a bit, because releasing only two games in a decade is, quite frankly, **depressing**! 😅 ...Gotta say though it would be SO sweet if they did a second "State of Emergency" also, that game had SO much potential, and since then there haven't been any noteworthy attempts at replicating its unique mechanics and aspects; the whole riot concept was disappointingly constricted by the PlayStation 2/Xbox but now they could easily realise it at ten times the magnitude, simulating an entire city and massive, violent crowds within it. It would essentially be GTA but in a hostile, dangerous city - maybe during a coup or revolution or something - where each district is controlled by different insurgent groups, though some are also controlled by heavily-armoured highly-militarised cops. The player character gets caught in the chaos and can ally themselves with one of the many insurgents, or join the police force (they're desperate and will take anyone at this point), or if they're reckless enough they can try to survive on their own. The player could also betray factions and play them off each other, as well as declare war on any other faction and initiate a takeover of their territory and seizure of their assets. They could also add low-key alternatives, like maybe you could partake in espionage and sabotage to achieve your goals, for example for espionage you could join one group as an undercover agent for another group, and then begin stealing technological blueprints or scientific research that would give your side an advantage; for sabotage you could maybe sneak into an insurgent base and slash the tires of all their vehicles, or start a fire in one of their drug labs or at one of their food crops, or interrupt their supply chain by bribing or killing their trade contacts... And speaking of trade, the game could have a fairly complex trading system where factions randomly trade with each other in real-time, and each transaction uses one of the faction's actual trucks to deliver and receive goods, so you could destroy a faction's entire fleet of trucks and they would be unable to trade for say, 20 minutes IRL time or something. Sorry for rambling lol, "State of Emergency" just had so much potential and it was such a unique concept with the rioting and chaos in the streets, and with the capabilities of current gen it would be the perfect time to actually try and fully realise that concept without crappy hardware limitations. Sadly I'm sure Rockstar has totally forgotten that game even existed, but hopefully someone somewhere utilises that concept in a game eventually because it's too awesome to just let it go to waste! 😅😂
1:18 "One of them machines can turn men into angels." I find it heartbreaking that the final peaceful thought John ever had was of one of the technological marvels of not just the 20th century, but of human history, and that he'd never get to live to see it with his family.
It’s so weird how that one side mission in RDR2 with Jack fishing, and Milton and Ross led up to the end of the first game . The entire red dead series is based around jack and the entire time you don’t notice it

@Hud_Ayubi You can’t read it but you can see it as an Easter egg on a bookshelf in Franklin’s mansion in GTA V
My headcanon was always that he carried out as much revenge as he could against every lawman he saw, until he had nowhere left to run but south to Mexico, where he lived out his days in a land that was still wild. And of course, you can more or less do this in game.
Arthur was right. Revenge is a fools game

@Hound of Ulster yeah of couse but its boring arthur was so much cooler so ive started a new game and am gonna free mode with him now
JayBattles I’m about to start a new game as Arthur I miss him he’s so much better than John
Plus, John can't swim
Justice is just legalized vengeance. Two sides of the same bloody coin.
It's a tale as old as the times. Politics and what not. This shit happens in the modern day as well. It's called getting rid of loose ends.
@@dancasipit Yeah yeah yeah that’s the “reason” but truly the main reason for Ross is the power to chase and kill people with “oficial” justification.
I still like messing with Uncle as Arthur lol I feel like that's just what Arthur would do to lazy ole Uncle.
He's one of those lazy oldies that doesn't know how to put things politely but will never leave your side and always pulls the best out of you, he's a true champ
He is a true friend to them

Closed Casket Funeral for you Ross.
He stares blankly as Jack goes on about the new flying machines that will make men into angels as it finally *truely* dwells upon him for the first time that he has grown too old to learn new tricks.
ok😐
speaking of staring blankly, I dont think that moment in undead nightmare gets talked about enough. the intro where Jack is going on about the plot of his book and his voice fades out as John just stares in quiet pride, as if hes realizing that Jack is more intelligent than Abigail and himself and it almost seems like hope that his son will be able to lead the life he was robbed of because of that.
Honestly one of the best scene in the series imo. Just too damn good

After playing RDR2 I prefer to ignore all the things that happened in RDR1. In my heart, John and Abigail became old in the ranch and died in 1960
I think of it a man in the shadows brought Arthur back to life made him cough up a huge blood clot which was TB and Arthur kills the remaining Pinkertons
Abigail died in 1914?

Micah is the reason every bad thing has happened in the RDR series

@@numberone51976 So his home and barn can be taken by the bank and Sadie and Charles would've died too and not killing Micah might bring him another few years or few months anyway since all paperwork he did was sign by John's real name. So John chose the right way to go after Micah and kill him. I mean what the point if John stays with his family but can't pay off his debt and Sadie and Charles, has to die.
@@doomguy9087 Going with Charles and Sadie is certainly the noble thing to do. But it's still technically the reason everything happened in RDR1.
@@numberone51976 Sadie and Charles insist on going after Micah and kill him even without John, not to mention that Dutch was also there to kill Micah as well. If Sadie and Charles somehow managed to kill Micah without John. The Pinkerton would found John first anyway because John lives 2 miles away from Blackwater and The Pinkerton never found Sadie and Charles because they move far away from Blackwater. RDR1 event happens because John didn't move away from Blackwater.

Taka Baruna They have to... because they have to justify their wages.
Real💯💯
He still would've been hunted by the government 😭
Exactly John fought entire armies of men. He absolutely could’ve taken them down aswell but he realized that there was no redemption except death. Even after everything he did to help the government, it was a lost cause. Him and his family would always live in fear, have to leave the farm. It was the only way he could get them the freedom he wanted for himself.
realistically? I don’t think his barn would survive a volley of billets
lets be honest...
none of this would have happened if it wasn’t for M I C A H

If Micah wasn’t there, Dutch wouldn’t have gone as far off the path as he did with the rat spurring him along. If Micah wasn’t there Arthur would never have died and if Micah wasn’t there John never would’ve drawn the law to him by taking revenge. So yeah Micah really is the reason all this happened.

John's death was just tragic, it pissed me off so much lol. Especially after playing the epilogue in rdr2 & seeing how hard John worked to change, building his house from scratch etc. I mean, seeing Arthur die sucked too but if you played the first RDR then you kinda knew from the beginning that he would die someway, somehow. Johns death was unexpected (for me anyways). Dude doesn't even get much time with his family that he just saved before getting gunned down by the very same men he served to save them
I agreed bro
Yeah, it's why I find both games just sad. Arthur (at least in the canon ending) is basically betrayed by Dutch who he knew for 20 years by a rat he knew for 9 months. Then we come to RDR where John is trying to erase his past life to be able to see his family again in a peaceful life, only to be taken away from him by Crooked Pinkertons. I hate Ross WAY more than I hate Milton. Both just tragic.

Nah uncle
I needed this. Now I will wait for them to continue this series with a new story line. Any day now RockStar, any day now!
Any decade now, more like 😂 Next year they will have milked GTA V for 11 goddamn years, it's ridiculous!
As much as I love GTA, and even moreso the Red Dead Redemption series, I miss the days when Rockstar didn't restrict themselves to two IPs -
...Gotta say though it would be SO sweet if they did a second "State of Emergency" also, that game had SO much potential, and since then there haven't been any noteworthy attempts at replicating its unique mechanics and aspects; the whole riot concept was disappointingly constricted by the PlayStation 2/Xbox but now they could easily realise it at ten times the magnitude, simulating an entire city and massive, violent crowds within it.
I love how Jack's revenge perfectly depicts what John said in the beginning of the game. "People don't forget, nothing is forgiven."
