How To Catch Squids For Dummies (Click Show More Below)
There is NO TRICK!!!
I have just started focusing on squidding last month. After myriads of expensive lessons from losing squid jigs, I have found the EASIEST way of catching squid for noobs like myself. If I can catch it, you can too!!
Note: TL;DR is at the bottom.
Rig:
1.) Learn how to tie paternoster rig using 15-20lbs monofilament. I use 30lb because I'm too cheap to buy different lbs lines and I lost too many jigs. I lost jigs so you don't have to after reading this.
2.) IMPORTANT: Dropper loop has to be short to prevent snags! Then, add a clip to it. Photo: imgur.com/qSTYZny
3.) Add a small sinker at the bottom. 2 dollarydoos coin for size. Photo: imgur.com/3DSZK2P
4.) Length from sinker to jig varies but you don't want it to be too close. Mine is around 44-45cm. Photo: imgur.com/IaFehQL
5.) UPDATE**: DOUBLE UNI KNOT TO A LIGHTER LINE TO CONNECT SINKER. IF SNAG, YOU LOSE SINKER BUT NOT JIG. So: 30lbs mono paternoster connects to 8-10lbs mono to sinker

Lure:
- Size: Size matters! Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
- If you're fishing off the rocks or on a boat in deeper water, you can go bigger sizes. Big squid, big jig. Common sense.
- I primarily fish landbased. Wharf hopping. Shallower water depth so I use size 1.5 jigs.
- Colour: Natural colour seems to work best for me. However, some people swear by pink or orange. Whatever floats your boats, I guess
Technique:
- Step 1: Cast, let it sink to bottom, then slow retrieve.
- Step 2: There's no step 2
No need for jerky jerk motion. Just slow retrieve. Slooooooooww. If you're feeling fancy, jerk occasionally to show off to the fishos nearby that you know your shitzz and got some mad squidding skillzz. I don't because I repeat: there's no need for it.
TL;DR:
Lure: Yamashita Egi Sutte R
Size: 1.8
Colour: NKN
Rig: Paternoster/High-Low Rig (15-20lbs mono)

Technique: Slow retrieve

Nice tutorial man, will be following yah.
Thank you! I am learning myself, and I try to find to most efficient (or lazy) way of doing it. so I figure I can try to share whatever I've learn with everyone.
Great tutorial! I will try that out in my next attempt!
Good luck!
Nice. Slow roll works for me too.
Quick tip, spike or dispatch your squid straight away. Much softer this way, also bit of kiwi fruit rubbed on just before cooking.
Thank you for the tip! I didnt know that! I'll try the kiwi thing too!
Tutorial description is funny as 😂
Great video mate.
Thanks for that tip. I'll try it next time I go out for a flick.
Good luck and all the best! let me know how it goes!
Nice one mate!
Thanks buddy! Im still slowly figuring out different tricks.
You don't need to jerk it because your egi is on a ledger rig. Also I think if would be better if you lifted your rod in the air after you hook up the squid, the rod will be able to bend and take up any slack in the line caused by the squid pulsing. Pointing your rod into the water isnt good.
WHY use weighted jigs if you have a sinker on the bottom? Should i buy one weighted and one not weighted ?
Very informative thanks for the tips. I have just bought a couple of squid jigs to give it a try. When you drag it in slow are you keeping the sinker on the bottom or avoiding the bottom?
To answer your question:
1) I usually let the sinker sits at the bottom because the area I fish is usually sandy less chance of snagging.
2) I set my drag loose to let the squid pulls, because if you set it tight they might rip their tentacles off and you lose the squid.
3) Another reason (at least for me) to set the drag loose is so that I can feel when my sinker or squid jig is about to get snag on an obstacle i.e. kelps, you can feel the slight tension. That's when you just jig or lift your rod up slightly and reel in a littble bit, your rig will not get snagged. Then continue slow reel, usually squids hangs around seaweeds/kelps area.
note: that's why use high lbs line on your jig rig and low lbs line attach to sinker. that way you'll lose the sinker but not your expensive jigs.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

How long can u keep the squid is the bag before it goes off?
I am not too sure to be honest, usually I either use them as live baits right after i catch them or just head home and cook them
