Just up from the wharf you were at is the start of the sand flat that was next to the the old baths. My brother and I used to fish both sides of the baths and did quite well there (back in the '70s).
Casting out along the Northern edge of the baths, which was deeper water, we got: Bream, Whiting, Morwong, Fantail Leatherjackets, John Dory. We caught poddy mullet to use as bait in a trap on the sand flat. The Southern side of the baths was shallower due to the sand building up there. We got the fright of our lives when, standing on the sand flat at half-tide one day, a shark swam behind us and the shore in knee deep water. It was about 5 ft long. Back then the sand-flat was exposed at low tide. The snags would be the foundations that were left there.
I see. I do notice the changes of depth that you mentioned. That is surprising to me that John Dory can be caught there and it's not the first time I've heard of that. That is shocking to hear about sharks in such shallow water, especially on the sand flat.
We used to see the occasional much smaller one foot sharks as they swam onto the sand flat. The JD were there in Winter/Spring. Caught them on live poddy mullet or yellowtail on a 6/0 hook under a float while trying to catch kingfish or tailer; just make sure that the live bait is almost dead or their tail is trimmed to slow it down as the JDs are a bit slow. Winter reminds me; the large tailer were a regular visitor to that bay and were a great sport using a Wonder Wobbler. We also used to see kingfish as they swam along the edges, usually in pairs, looking for a feed. Almost forgot, we also caught the odd flounder.
That is awesome information. You certainly know the area extremely well. I haven't run into any large tailor but I have caught the odd flounder but it seems to be an uncommon catch. One of these days, I will try get a JD somewhere in the harbour, probably further downstream using trimmed down yakkas. I still wonder whether there are still as many sharks in the bay these days.
@@ShroomFishing Hi, the itchy twitchy is only rated to 5g, what size jigs do you go up to with it? (I have one and wondered how much over can you go before having issues. Thanks

I'm not sure I'm reading your comment correctly, but yeah Pier 2 is a top spot for kings. I haven't tried Tom Ugly all that much as every time I'm there its either packed or windy as.
Not the most productive spot but fairly quiet and caught my best flatty here, 59cm about 10metres on the right of the wharf. Thanks for not giving away the spot bro. I love fishing here even when I quiet
hey man, do you eat your squid or use it as bait? Also was this west or east of the harbour bridge. I catch southern calamari a lot but i only use it as bait. I wonder if they are good eating. thanks
Hey mate. You probably mean well but there are no size limits to my knowledge as specified in the DPI website. The bag limit is a total of 20 squid or cuttlefish. www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fishing/recreational/fishing-rules-and-regs/saltwater-bag-and-size-limits
For all the fishos out there, in particular if you like the squid fishing content. Enjoy this video! It's a tad on the lit side!
Great job mate! You were way more patient with your audience than I'd be in that situation. Thanks for being a fantastic ambassador for our community!
I appreciate the comment mate!
Bro you’ve got the patience of a Saint 😂😂😂
Thank you Rob! I like that comment

Nice, I think I know that shallow section there. What kind of fish did you get there back then? It looks really snaggy these days.

What is the best place to catch and keep fish in Sydney. As we ca. keep and eat fish from Parramatta river …
Along the coast and east of harbour bridge. Can't eat anything west of the bridge due to pollution

"this is very exciting". :0 ]
Captivating 😮
what time do you find during the day that squid are more active?
@SnapperMatt thanks. Do you find fishing for squid around midday less successful compared to sun rise or sun set?
@SnapperMatt thanks for the advice.
I agree with the information above. This video was filmed around lunch time.

@@ShroomFishing yeah someone came by and asked if its a shark lmao

Mate u got so lucky I swear I’ve only caught like one there
It's never happened again lol
Looks like you are catching tiger squid, or northern calamari...
Yeah the tiger calamari look very similar to the southern calamari.
hey man, do you eat your squid or use it as bait? Also was this west or east of the harbour bridge. I catch southern calamari a lot but i only use it as bait. I wonder if they are good eating. thanks
I usually use it as bait. They are great eating and are a world apart in taste and texture from the calamari bought from the fish monger.
You eating them ?
Sometimes, usually I use them for bait
@@ShroomFishing cool never eated squid before

These people will be fuming next time they pay $19.50 for Salt n Pepper Calamari at the RSL lol
🤣🤣🤣 Can't beat fresh caught calamaris
Could you please make a video on your eging setup?
Yes. It might be a while yet unless I start getting a bunch of interest in it. It is definitely a video I'll make in the future.

The squid are too small and best to be released. It's a big fine if the fisheries inspector comes along
