Good consistency in his voice, especially compared to some other artist's live performances.
Also, his voice is similar to that of the lead singer's from Death Cab for Cutie. Almost indistinguishable in this video.

Ive played the album 7 times through now and its a total gem trust me. I thought it was well below parr at first but after dealing with the direction change and repetative lyrics it captured me. Your ghost is funny and creepy and Rusalka about the mermaid in the rushes with haunt me till i die.

If only the whole record was congruent with this track and didn't charge off in so many competing directions. If they'd committed to this sound they'd have killed it.
At first I felt the same way but I really enjoy the variety on the record. Either way, this is a great song!
Eh, this weird new wave/sequencer stuff just sounds really weird to me. I much prefer the stuff on side 2. That's not to say that people who like it are wrong or something -- if you like it, awesome. It's just not what I go to the Decemberists for.

Love this but it's weird how QUIET this upload is. According to the Stats for Nerds display, this video is "content loudness -6.2dB," which means it's 6.2 decibels quieter than RUclips's standard reference playback level. That's really soft. Most concert videos are significantly above the reference level.

I have loved The Decemberists since Castaways, but god damn does the band look bored in this video. I have always admired the whole "New album, new sound" approach they have had over the years. But this album does not seem to be challenging for them to play as musicians. Do not get me wrong, The Decemberists are one of my all time favorite bands, but something is missing here. Cant quite put my finger on it.
I agree. I think you said it best... I don't care for the new album but I can't put my finger on what it is. I'll keep spinning it until I have a decent explanation why it's not awesome for me.
I have a love/hate relationship with the new album. The songs themselves are mostly quite good, but I can't get into the incredibly disparate "spot the influences" instrumentation they employ. One song sounds like "Unforgettable Fire" - era U2. "Severed" sounds like New Order circa 1986. One sounds like the Smiths. "We All Die Young" sounds EXACTLY like Gary Glitter's "Rock n Roll." The one and only constant is the instantly recognizable voice of Colin Maloy. I can appreciate that they want to experiment with their instrumentation, but this sounds like imitation, not organic growth. And the cynic in me looks at their choice of producer (look him up and see the performers he's worked with the last few years) and thinks this whole "new approach" is a grab at radio play and huge amounts of streaming.

Damn, I really like the Decemberists a lot, but the only things I like about this performance are the fabulous Kelly Hogan on backing vocals and Jenny's cape. Nate in particular looks bored to death.
