I love they got everytihng period correct to the 70s in Germany. The Sennheiser mics are perfect. .... and those fiberglass horn style toms like Alan White played in Yes.
"there comes a time in a mans life where... where the music makes sense" is probably the best quote I have ever actually been able to identify with, perfect way to end the video!
Me too. Generally while belting it out, practically screaming along to it at very high volume on the motorway (where the loudness offends no-one at all!) on my own.
lyrics: I want you, thin fingers I wanted you, thin fingernails And when you bend backwards I wanted you, I needed you Oh-oh, to make me butter I'll love you in springtime I lost you when summer came And when you pulled backwards I wanted you, I needed to Oh-oh, to make me butter Oh-oh, to make me butter But we're not so starry-eyed anymore Like the perfect paramour you were in your letters And won't it all just come around to make you Let it all unbreak you to the day you met her But it'd make you butter It'd make you butter I sung you, your twinges I suffered you, your tattletales And when you broke sideways I wanted you, I needed you Oh-oh, to make me butter Oh-oh, to make me butter But we're not so starry-eyed anymore Like the perfect paramour you were in your letters And won't it all just come around and make you Let it all unbreak you to the day that you met her And it'd make you better Did it make you butter? Make you butter And all I wanted was a sliver to call mine And all I wanted was a shimmer in your shine To make me bright 'Cause we're not so starry-eyed anymore Like the perfect paramour you were in your letters Won't it all just come around and make you Let it all unbreak you to the days you met her But it'd make you butter It'd make you butter
I'm the same. I think it's because we've all felt *this exact feeling* and it is so deep, so hardwired in us, that it'll never stop hurting ever, regardless. Colin's lyrics make me cry a lot. He *knows*. He just *knows*.
Lol as someone who walked out of 3 decemberists shows back on the 00’s because they “sucked” but now spends at least 2 hrs a day listening to the band... there is indeed a time in a man’s life when the music makes sense. Please fucking go back on tour.
People from the band could not find better name for the album than What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World. It shows conflicts of beautiful and terrible world and this is what the best describes the inner world of their songs. With elegant melodies that hey served for people like us can be this planet still quite a pleasant place to live, sometimes.
Great song - the video, if one watches without puristically listening to the music, is brilliantly done. Bill Fishman / whoever came up with the storyboard has clearly put intricate thought into this. Each piece has meaning and it's well produced. Anyone who knows anything about production can see how cleverly it's been done. There will be those who disagree, but from this viewer, much appreciated.
I sooooo badly want to see them in concert!!! But none of them are close enough for me to go without having to take time off of teaching. >.< The only band I want to see in concert this year.
They are WORTH it if you can find a way.I have seen them three times and have tickets to see them in Portland in March. I will not miss them if I can help it :-0
i feel so stupid omg, so i talked to my friend about neutral milk hotel so they introduced me to this band. after watching parks and recreation for the 4287 time, the unity concert i finally realized what band it was i need to slap myself wow
Oh, why don't you put your needless criticism on hold for 6:51 minutes and enjoy the exquisite combination that is Nick Offerman and The Decemberists. Isn't it nicer to just enjoy things?
I Just saw it like 20 times in the Broadway Channel on my JetBlue flight and couldn´t stop laughing!!!! It´s a perfect satire on the German music shows of he 1970´s (Pop in Germany) plus the VHS touch and so on.. Plus the last line ¨um...¨¨Wrong!¨it´s the icing on the cake! A must-nominate, front runner for any upcoming Video Award event. Love THE DECEMBER ISTS!!! >D
yep i know, actually if we want to compare Death Cab with any other band i think Band of Horses have a really close sound sometimes, you should check it, if you don' know them, i recomend them to you XD
Javier Hernandez O Band of Horses is much farther from Death Cab than the Decemberists are. Death Cab has more of a simplistic pop appeal and Band of Horses is pretty spacey sounding. Idk... I think people get into trouble when trying to argue that "X band sounds like Y band" because the factors that come into play in someone's interpretation are usually far different from others. In fact, most songs from early Decembrists albums sounds wildly different from this song, and Colin's voice is really the only unifying factor that can help us to determine that it is in fact the Decemberists. Human's propensity to plop things into categories doesn't seem to work all too well with music, even at a genre level. So let's just stop, relax and listen, mkay? =)
Jonathan Vernot except they have got better while death cab has spiraled into a toilet drain. lifetime death cab fan here. RIP death cab. long live colin maloy and the decemberists.
+cruhg I tried to click on your profile image... But yeah, I'm sorry to hear that you had to go through that. I can't really say that I understand, considering I've, uh, never had a significant other. "Owner of a Lonely Heart" and etc.
Nick Offerman makes this butter
butter my better
This comment has been here 4 years and it only has 78 likes, I'm bamboozled
*bitter*
To be fair, Ron Swanson would probably make his own butter

LIVE IN BERLIN - "Thank you, Stuttgart!"
thank you
There's nothing butter than seeing Ron Swanson in a Decemberists music video.
His name is Jerk Offmyman
PoPoyopon The failed joke ^. Good luck next time, buddy.
ajkelly451 *zach galifianakis
ajkelly451 Except, like, maybe the Decemberists on Parks and Rec... :P
You mean Duke Silver right
Hilarious and bizarre and yet somehow heartfelt...just as the Decemberists always are
Ron Swanson attempting a German accent. Life complete.
YoungJin Kim at first I thought it was Russian, until it said Berlin.
Jeremy Lewis i thought French
This song could use a saxophone solo from Duke Silver
For sure
lmao
You beat me to it.
Arturo Millán
All of my yes!
"There comes a time in a man's life when the music makes sense"
TT_______TT
Anyone else appreciate it when bands show the necks of their guitars when they make videos? Makes it easier to figure out how to play the song.
Not sure why there's so much hate over the video. It's quirky and broody. Like the Decemberists. Personally, I love it!
Now can we just get Nick Offerman to play saxophone on a Decemberists album?
Christiana Sherrill You mean Duke Silver?
I love they got everytihng period correct to the 70s in Germany. The Sennheiser mics are perfect. .... and those fiberglass horn style toms like Alan White played in Yes.
Nick Offerman's cutting, "so you say," might be the funniest line ever delivered
I’ve reached the time on my life when I know what I want, and the music makes sense
I was 19 in 1977. I can attest that this video is a perfect recreation of that era.
Accurate - everything had harvest gold undertones.
I was 64 in 1977 iam now 110 years old.
keep on keeping on, old man@@sebastianruhland5198
“what’s your favorite decemberists song?” “make you butter”
Maybe over analyzing, but I think "when the music makes sense" was a much better line.
idk why this song has such a sadness to it
cant get enough of it
"there comes a time in a mans life where... where the music makes sense" is probably the best quote I have ever actually been able to identify with, perfect way to end the video!
Colin Meloy is a true genius. Just finished reading his Wildwood series and I'm truely amazed by his talent as an author as well.

My son would go to a summer program in Portland Oregon based on that book.
The very first song I ever heard by them…and one of their best too.
I cannot tell you how many times I have cried to this song..
Me too. Generally while belting it out, practically screaming along to it at very high volume on the motorway (where the loudness offends no-one at all!) on my own.
One of the butter songs ever done!
lyrics:
I want you, thin fingers
I wanted you, thin fingernails
And when you bend backwards
I wanted you, I needed you
Oh-oh, to make me butter
I'll love you in springtime
I lost you when summer came
And when you pulled backwards
I wanted you, I needed to
Oh-oh, to make me butter
Oh-oh, to make me butter
But we're not so starry-eyed anymore
Like the perfect paramour you were in your letters
And won't it all just come around to make you
Let it all unbreak you to the day you met her
But it'd make you butter
It'd make you butter
I sung you, your twinges
I suffered you, your tattletales
And when you broke sideways
I wanted you, I needed you
Oh-oh, to make me butter
Oh-oh, to make me butter
But we're not so starry-eyed anymore
Like the perfect paramour you were in your letters
And won't it all just come around and make you
Let it all unbreak you to the day that you met her
And it'd make you better
Did it make you butter?
Make you butter
And all I wanted was a sliver to call mine
And all I wanted was a shimmer in your shine
To make me bright
'Cause we're not so starry-eyed anymore
Like the perfect paramour you were in your letters
Won't it all just come around and make you
Let it all unbreak you to the days you met her
But it'd make you butter
It'd make you butter
Even though I'm in an amazing relationship, this song still always makes me want to cry.
I'm the same. I think it's because we've all felt *this exact feeling* and it is so deep, so hardwired in us, that it'll never stop hurting ever, regardless. Colin's lyrics make me cry a lot. He *knows*. He just *knows*.
You're so right - me too! (And I thought it was just me ❤)

The video is great, yes, but let's talk about the SONG. One of the of the best choruses of any indie song in the past decade. It scrapes the skies.
Yeah but maybe a little more cowbell
Love it! Also, Nick Offerman makes everything better.
He also makes everything butter
You say better, not butter
OMG Nick Offerman!
Omg Marshall!
OMG Paul Tandy!
Curly guitar leads , now that's what i call attention to detail , love love love this song
Love it. Always good to see Nick Offerman on German television in the 1980s.
I wonder if the woman's name is Tammy
Sherri
Could be Tammy Lynnn though
She looks like a Tammy
2024 and this song just gets butter and butter
Under-rated comment
Quite simply one of the greatest music videos I've ever seen.
This song has the feeling of mid 90's Counting Crows, not complaining.
this is so great. such a great video for one of their very best tracks. watching again 13 January 2023

The December
ists are one of my favorite groups!
I love when bands make their music videos comedic!
Lovely to see Jenny looking well. Yay!
A friend recommended that I try some Decemberist music.
I'm glad he did. Excellent, excellent music.
Excellent! That song couldn't be butter.

There should be a real show like the Old Blue Rock Palace Show. Love the interview style.
One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard
Nick's dancing makes this so much butter, I mean better.
Colin and the crew continuing their march to concur every musical genre. Move over DC4C!!!
First time listening this band it it hits me right square in the feels... this is incredible...
Such a great tune.
He has a John Denver quality about his voice.
...but without the annoying '70's bowlcut.
Especially in the Lake Song (Lyric Video)
Its a video, its meant to entertain and bring about discussion of the band. I would say job well done guys and gals. Job well done.
Very cool!
Wouldn't Meloy kill on "Soul Meets Body"?
These guys are great. Their sound is tilted a little different. Love it!
My favorite 2015´s song so far !! I do love it from the bottom of my heart !
I just cannont understand how it is not on the radios !!!
i feel so stupid omg, so i talked to my friend about neutral milk hotel so they introduced me to this band. after watching parks and recreation for the 4287 time, the unity concert i finally realized what band it was i need to slap myself wow
This very much reminds me of the 1976 Fairport Convention live recording for Rockpalast in Germany, I like the throwback very funny

Never noticed Chris Funk getting his beard/mustache caught in the microphone at 3:05 before today. Perfect!
Gotta love that Steve Brule look. For your single!
This album is so awesome! I just saw them live for the first time and they were phenomenal.
Oh my goodness I cant wait to see you in portland Live!!!
Such a good song.
How could I have missed Ron Swanson and Colin Meloy in the same interview?!
Ditto!
The accent and goofy retro clothes, maybe?

What an artistic video. I liked it. Great song
Brilliant! This is making me nostalgic...
Very "Death Cab", with fuller harmonies toward the end.
jockslap i agree with you, if you hear ""The King is Dead" is all folk/country
yep i know, actually if we want to compare Death Cab with any other band i think Band of Horses have a really close sound sometimes, you should check it, if you don' know them, i recomend them to you XD

God! Colin Meloy it's such an inspiration!
How did it take me so long to find you ❤️❤️❤️
I love this song, but I can't find it anywhere on line or in the record stores. Where can I get a hold of "I will make you butter"?
