funny story about this song: when I was about 5 or so, my dad was super into the Decemberists and would play a lot of their music almost all the time. This song was a favorite of my sister and me and we would sing the female part all the time, dancing around. We never got the lyrics right, which was probably for the best in hindsight. My friends and I back in 2012-2013 were in a metal/punk band and our lead guitarist played us this song and I swear that is the moment where my appreciation for music as a whole started. Of course I always loved metal, but from then on I started to branch out and now my music taste almost a decade later is so astronomically different and vast.
So, yeah. I'm running a Pirate DND campaign and I used this song as the basis for one of my longer Quest lines. The party Were placed in a Prison in Novistar(The capital of my world) and were down on their luck when they met a half elf by the name of Arthur Callaghan(Yes that is a Reference to Red Dead Redemption 2, but he was based nothing on Arthur.)The boy was in with the Guards and eventually he managed to get the PC's out of Jail by Bribing them. He had heard of The Pc's and wanted to ask them for passage on their Ship "The Primrose" to a little known settlement Known as the Kingdom of Stronghold. They accepted, On the condition that he help about the Ship when they needed a Extra pair of hands, And since we had a Paladin of Sune, and A Cleric of Uuta aboard they agreed to take him for free, with only that stipulation. He had proven a capable Deckhand, however he had a strange habit of looking out into the sea while the Wind whistled about them... It seemed to be strangely hypnotic for the boy. Eventually one night The Pc's would awake to Arthur manning the Helm, Not unusual, however he had a very stern look upon his face. They seemed to be bearing down upon a ship, Their Ram poised to smash the ship the splinters. Our Wizard stopped him, Using Mage hand to Yank the Wheel from his grasp, however.... We did hit something. Going Nearly 16 Knots(18 Mph) We Smacked hard into a Whale the likes of which no one had ever seen. It was Gargantuan, Letting out a massive moan it turned and Bit the ship we were chasing in twain, before turning... And Forcing the Primrose into the same fate. The Pc's alive, as was Arthur. The group was in a uproar, screaming at one another until something caught their attention. A man coughing loudly in the corner of the Whales belly. The man looked to be in his late thirties, Scars running all along his face, But Arthur Knew.... Our Cleric Ran to heal the Man, However Arthur Shouted out, telling him to stop. Long Story Short Arthur begged the Pc's to, at least let him explain himself, and Why he intended to Murder this Man. They Agreed. The Music Began. It started as a Lonely Guitar, One Arthur Always carried with him, Vibrating softly in the Belly of the Whale, But Eventually.... Other Instruments Joined in, And even his Mother's Ghost made a Guest appearance. The Dilemma was up to the Players. Allow this man his Revenge? Or Stop him, and try to talk him out of this Killing. Sorry, it got so Wordy. Just wanted to tell this Awesome Story.
It's weird how I fall in love with music these days(: Well, since I'm obsessed with the Hunger Games, I listened to their song for the album and FELL IN LOVE
Lesson for today! Colin Meloy- lead singer wrote a book called WILDWOOD. And it is truly a new classic for the 21st Century. He brang his great ideas used in his songs, into this amazing book. Trenton Lee Stewart and Lemony Snicket- popular authors reviewed his book and came up with amazing comments. I recommend you to read this book if you have a love for his band. This book is amazing and once you step in, you won't wanna go out. Keep it up Colin!
Wonderful tale of revenge and irony. It's providence they meet but the Captains fate was already set and the son could have lived his life. Instead the son and mother died with the Captain.
Wow! I've loved this song from first time hearing it like 10 years ago, never knew about this live version. It blew my mind! That final accelerando is a Mariner's headbanging masterpiece
No matter how many times this song comes up (this times 3 times in a row) I can't skip it. I can still see myself taking out the details within the revenge chorus. That's probably something I shouldn't say out loud.
people have already mentioned this but I love the play on words of the "time to kill" line showing he wasn't just telling a story and actually planned out this song to foreshadow it's ending, and of course the alternate reading of "we have some time, to kill" where he's using that time to kill his dad. amazing
It's kind of cool when you have the ability to "manipulate" the crowd with your music. The way how you're into the story, and almost part of it as with this song. The fact that they don't have to sing the chorus again at the end, because you already know it, and feel it. It's a awesome feeling.
I have listened to this song countless times, each musician was going hard to make this story/ Song happen. This is the difference between the crap on the radio & real art! Thank you!
As I listen to the Mariner's Revenge Song now that I'm older, I find it really hilarious that the protagonist deifies his mother so wonderfully. A widow who kept an 18 year old boy toy not long after the passing of her husband. Peak comedy. Lol. This lad out here swearing the bitterest revenge over a scandal.
Absolutely love this, but I'm pretty sure he messed up when he said "it gives my eye great joy to see your eyes fill with fear". Unless I'm not remembering the lyrics correctly.
The two women making up one character is honestly an awesome touch.
They've always done it like that live...
The actual woman, and the memory of her, but a shadow
I didn’t expect that from this version. Gave me a good chill

Lyrics:
We are two mariners
Our ship's sole survivors
In this belly of a whale
It's ribs our ceiling beams
It's guts our carpeting
I guess we have some time to kill
You may not remember me
I was a child of three
And you, a lad of eighteen
But, I remember you
And I will relate to you
How our histories interweave
At the time you were
A rake and a roustabout
Spending all your money
On the whores and hounds
Oh oh
You had a charming air
All cheap and debonair
My widowed mother found so sweet
And so she took you in
Her sheets still warm with him
Now filled with filth and foul disease
As time wore on you proved
A debt-ridden drunken mess
Leaving my mother
A poor consumptive wretch
Oh oh
And then you disappeared
Your gambling arrears
The only thing you left behind
And then the magistrate
Reclaimed our small estate
And my poor mother lost her mind
Then, one day in spring
My dear sweet mother died
But, before she did
I took her hand as she, dying, cried
Oh oh
Find him, bind him
Tie him to a pole and break
His fingers to splinters
Drag him to a hole until he
Wakes up naked
Clawing at the ceiling
Of his grave
It took me fifteen years
To swallow all my tears
Among the urchins in the street
Until a priory
Took pity and hired me
To keep their vestry nice and neat
But, never once in the employ
Of these holy men
Did I ever, once turn my mind
From the thought of revenge
Oh oh
One night I overheard
The prior exchanging words
With a penitent whaler from the sea
The captain of his ship
Who matched you toe to tip
Was known for wanton cruelty
The following day, I shipped to sea
With a privateer
And in the whistle of the wind
I could almost hear
Oh oh
Find him, bind him
Tie him to a pole and break
His fingers to splinters
Drag him to a hole until he
Wakes up naked
Clawing at the ceiling
Of his grave
There is one thing I must say to you
As you sail across the sea
Always, your mother will watch over you
As you avenge this wicked deed
And then, that fateful night
We had you in our sight
After twenty months at sea
Your starboard flank abeam
I was getting my muskets clean
When came this rumbling from beneath
The ocean shook
The sky went black and the captain quailed
And before us grew
The angry jaws of a giant whale
Oh oh
Oh
Don't know how I survived
The crew all was chewed alive
I must have slipped between his teeth
But, oh! What providence
What divine intelligence
That you should survive as well as me
It gives my heart great joy
To see your eyes fill with fear
To lean in close and I will whisper
The last words you'll hear
Oh oh

LikeGodzzila It was an amazing book.
Cutlery Duck It was a book??
+LikeGodzzila Not that it's exactly the same, but you might enjoy the movie about Moby Dick coming out soon. I think it's a prequel about how Captain Ahab lost his leg.
Look up mariners revenge and there's an animated version.
I've honestly listened to this song at least 10 times in the last day. Can't get enough
Instead of growing up with today's music, I grew up listening to this! I was 8 years old asking my dad to play this 24/7! 😄😆
7:41
My new favorite thing is watching him stomp his foot.
I never thought that was part of the music.
This song has put a spell on me! It's a masterpiece and so enchanting! One of the most delicacies for my ears, for my soul... Colin, you must have an exceptional mind! Thanks for the throbs you give me...
This absolutely trashes the studio version. Can't seem to find a download of this rendition anywhere. Anyone know where I can (preferably legally) download this?
Well you could always use a RUclips converter and convert it into an MP3
I think both of them are awesome!
Just use a decent mp3 converter site
I can’t find the other version
Legally? Pff
This is an absolute masterpiece. I'm seeing these guys live in a few weeks and I will be happy forever if they play this song!
Saw them at Summerfest, and they did, and it was an amazing performance
My friends and I back in 2012-2013 were in a metal/punk band and our lead guitarist played us this song and I swear that is the moment where my appreciation for music as a whole started. Of course I always loved metal, but from then on I started to branch out and now my music taste almost a decade later is so astronomically different and vast.
One of my new favorites! Right up there with Carolina drama from the raconteurs
me too!
love Carolina Drama
Dwight Schrute has an incredible voice!
Haha they play the decemberist song don't they on the show?..the dwight shrute family after their aunt passes away and thr whole family is there.
10/10 would DnD again.
That's actually an awesome D&D plot. Nice!
The lead singer reminds me of Patrick Stump in terms of his facial expressions. haha!
My man's chin is crazy
I can’t believe I’ve listened to this song since this video was only 1y old. lol
I love how they did the moms voice by having both women singing to create that creepy echo
The amount the 12 string guitar adds to this is amazing.
for some reason my mom always played this song on really long car trips (LATE AT NIGHT) and it still scares me.
Your mom sounds like a cool lady.
This transcends anything a music video could ever do. What a fantastic song!!!!! I cannot get enough of it!!
A buddy of mine played this song, only it as a bit faster and more intense. Dude is a genius, but I love the original all the same.
Wait hold on;
This wasn't uploaded by the Decemberists themselves, and yet it has more than 6 times the amount of views as the actual song.
Big oof.
I've been thinking of covering this song. This performance makes me think better. So amazing!!!!
Seriously so glad I found this band. Great lyrics and instrumental composition.
Love this song! Only just heard it...how can the last comment be from 3 years ago! Such talent.
we seem to be in the same boat
@@canofsnarf3108 I sea what you did there!
Wp
God this song slaps so hard, where the hell was it all my life?
Wonderful tale of revenge and irony. It's providence they meet but the Captains fate was already set and the son could have lived his life. Instead the son and mother died with the Captain.
Wow! I've loved this song from first time hearing it like 10 years ago, never knew about this live version. It blew my mind! That final accelerando is a Mariner's headbanging masterpiece
I have been listening to this song on and off for about 5-6 years and I’ve finally finally understood. It’s and absolute MASTERPIECE!!
Music, Voice, Words, = Goosebumps
No matter how many times this song comes up (this times 3 times in a row) I can't skip it. I can still see myself taking out the details within the revenge chorus. That's probably something I shouldn't say out loud.
I could picture a movie based on this song on adult swim or something
Absolutely BRILLIANT arrangement, storytelling and performance! Outstanding musicianship.
One of my favorite songs. Amazing.
4:02 I love when singers make weird faces when singing
My English teacher had us listen and analyze this song as an assignment, now I can’t stop listening to it 😂
people have already mentioned this but I love the play on words of the "time to kill" line showing he wasn't just telling a story and actually planned out this song to foreshadow it's ending, and of course the alternate reading of "we have some time, to kill" where he's using that time to kill his dad. amazing
it wasn't his dad really as he was already born then his mom took the bad guy in
Not a dad. Temporary stepdad more like
How is this not the best thing on RUclips ever. Such a masterpiece. Bravo.
Is it not? I think it is!
great song and interpretation! 6:29 is perfect, adds such a terrific chaotic point to the situation described
It's kind of cool when you have the ability to "manipulate" the crowd with your music. The way how you're into the story, and almost part of it as with this song. The fact that they don't have to sing the chorus again at the end, because you already know it, and feel it. It's a awesome feeling.
Duh?
how is this even real
I have listened to this song countless times, each musician was going hard to make this story/ Song happen. This is the difference between the crap on the radio & real art! Thank you!
This dude has the perfect voice for this song 10/10
As I listen to the Mariner's Revenge Song now that I'm older, I find it really hilarious that the protagonist deifies his mother so wonderfully. A widow who kept an 18 year old boy toy not long after the passing of her husband. Peak comedy. Lol. This lad out here swearing the bitterest revenge over a scandal.
Absolutely love this, but I'm pretty sure he messed up when he said "it gives my eye great joy to see your eyes fill with fear". Unless I'm not remembering the lyrics correctly.
Yea I noticed too it's supposed to be "it gives my heart great joy to see your eyes fill with fear"
Muse of Discord he's added a touch more characterization. I think it's fabulous. You get a better view of the character
Playlist for the dead

Like your name ;)
Good because Just because there dead doesn’t mean they don’t dance
Outstanding...😯
i love their voices and this song is so deep and hits a lot of chords for me i cant stop hitting repeat
Imagine being eaten by a whale and that not even being the worst part of your day
