Petrol sounded better, but yes diesel are more solid and durable and produce lots of torque. Whereas petrols are faster and reliable and produce lots of horsepower.
Electric cars are cheaper to charge and have no emissions. The only problem is the production of them but you could say that for gasoline and diesel cars as well

Well, while driving, all I remember hearing was this airy typewriter-like sound from the engine with such a little bass or heaviness. Dunno whether that was a rod knock. Anyway, we sold it after a massive repairing overhaul. After moving to this Toyota Corolla DX Station Wagon with a sophisticated Inline-4 Diesel engine, let's say I rarely miss the times we had with our good old Delica van.
I like the natural diesel sound. Petrol engine sound comes from exhaust. Except honda's b series vtec. That engine sounds good from the hood, not from exhaust.
I'm not a petrolhead, but the petrol one sounded better even in the hood, honestly. I guess because it has a higher rpm and there is no noisy injector noise.(the injector is smaller and less noisy so its the pure N.A petrol revving and sreaming that made such a good sound to hear.)

Daniel The best option for me is 530d (193 hp version better than 184 hp). I prefer automatic transmission too...BUT I warn you, diesel E39’s nowadays are old and high mileage cars, and in most cases abused and poorly mantained for previous owners...said that, if you find a low mileage and well cared one, go for it even if that’s a 525d manual. 😉
If you don't want to increase power by making a remap, then an automatic should be good for you, especially on a 525d which has even less power to worry about. The E39 diesels got a really bad automatic gearbox with very little torque capacity, just enough to handle a stock 3.0 engine's power. I have a manual because I actually love shifting and it can take the extra power. I have both a 525d and 530d. 525d is just a little bit more economical though.
Mehd42 I’m agree but my 530i average consumption is 9.3 l/100 Km. 13 l/100 Km would be more city driving or something is wrong with that engine. Congrats for your 530d by the way!

Autoroutes pour Paris ou Marseille a 120 km/h la 6.2 de moyenne. Mon pote avec sa 530i sur Lyon centre c'est 13 litres de moyenne. Ma 540i a l'époque fesait 16 litres sur Lyon. 9 litres sur autoroute a 120 km/h. En sachant que le diesel est 20 centimes moin cher par litres.

If you have 30minutes in the cold mornings to warm the engine then it's good for fuel economy but otherwise you hold the engine. I think if you live in a country fuel is cheap, diesel is unneccessary.
Diesel engines are powerful, fuel efficient, sound is best and more importantly need low maintenance and have greater Service Life than Petrol engines.

A 22 year old m3 with 3 liter engine without any turbos makes 343 hp! that's why sport cars don't use diesel engines, they are not for going fast! same goes for petrol, you don't use a petrol engine in a tractor because they don't make high torque! horsepower = torque * rpm ! if you want to be fast, you need horsepower, not torque!

I got an 530d automatic 2 months ago with 240.000km I've never been so happy with a car :) love it
