    Young delegates Johnny Antillon - Philippines, Peter Hudson - UK, Gunnar Aasland - Norway, and Vangala Ram - India, discuss the problem of communism within their respective countries. In a most lively discussion, the students look at the topic from numerous angles, but stress particularly how we can at the same time control communism and protect civil liberties. Whether politicians should deal with internal communism, and whether it would be advisable to outlaw the communist party are also considered. In this connection several related problems are brought to light: Would the party be more difficult to control if it were forced completely underground; Would there be danger of confusing liberals and other nonconformists with communists? An attempt is also made to define subversion, and several opinions are presented. Whether or not congressional committees are operating fairly and successfully is also discussed. One student expresses the fear that men may be unnecessarily hurt because of the fact that a committee may publicly suggest that he is guilty of some act, and yet is not empowered actually to establish that guilt or innocence. While much of the discussion centers, around the problem in the United States, several of the students describe what is being done in their own country about the problem, and the point is made that the solution for one country may not necessarily be the answer for another

      this is exactly what the capitalist system is doing to the poor of our society and this is why communism is controversial in our society because it offers an alternative economic sytem that might solve the problem of poverty. but the problem is that communists, primarily members of CPP-NPA (not all communists belong to communist organizations) are not willing to give up the armed struggle to achieve their goals which understandably will not be tolerated by any democratic government. the issue today is whether it is consistent with the principles of democracy to suppress members of communist organizations by force if necessary which the opponents of Johnny in this debate think is undemocratic. this is a thorny issue that might divide our society and can result to a civil war. we should really think deeply about the issue specially those who can influence government policies to avoid unnecessary bloodshed in our country.

    • @psykiem
      @psykiem 3 года назад +76

      The problem in the Philippines is that both demo-crazy and comfu-nism are inconsistent with their own principles in some way. Johny is a representive of a democratic country yet here he argues like a dictator, making hasty assumptions and generalization that anyone who joins communist organizations are automatically criminals, and stripping them the freedom to form and join organizations. But I cannot blame him because some communist groups in the Philippines really act like terrorists, who kill even the poor people, which is again inconsistent to the principles of communism. The politics in the Philippines is pretty fucked up. I think the current movement which closely resembles communism is Community Pantries, a money-less system, "you own everything, and at the same you don't own anything", so "you give according to your abilities, and you receive according to your needs". Although, I'm not pro-administration, but I say that they are right to call Community Pantries as communist, but not the terrorist communist, but the ideal communist. And it's amazing how this idea of mutual-aid spread like wildfire across the country. It just tells us something about who the true Filipino is.
      It's sad how many Filipinos in the comment section are so proud of him without taking some time to understand what he is actually saying. Fascist. Now, I don't really know who the true Filipino is..

    • @amadoramos5040
      @amadoramos5040 3 года назад +20

      @@psykiem maybe we Filipinos are ideal communists in our innermost being. most of us just don't realize or accept the label communist as a designation because it was demonized by anti-communist propagandists and identified with terrorism in the mindset of the masses. i agree with you that the community pantry movement is a spontaneous expression of true communism. how i wish that this communistic bayanihan spirit does not cease and be creatively expressed in other forms even after the pandemic.

      I think you also have to understand that these kids must be from prestigious universities and come from privileged families. If you compare overall generation from today and the past then i think today's generation is smarter. We can't just generalise the entire generation by the use of tiktok. Not everyone uses tiktok, atleast not in India. Many kid use internet for their education too. Many kid in India uses Internet to become the engineer, doctor, administrative officer and many other things. Also, many people in past didn't had enough opportunities or resources to educate themselves. As far as i talk about India's young generation, our problem is brain drain since our government is not providing better social and financial security or infrastructure to our top minds & that cost the country lots of money since they study in government institutions like Indian institute of technology and AIIMS. Many Indian CEO from international companies are from IIT.

      Exactly! But I understand the point of Johnny and the other 3 gentlemen. The problem was that the movement of communism in PH at that time was different with the other countries, you see communism with other countries secretly lurking in the high position of society trying to influence other influential people with their idea to overthrow the government and install their own idea of society which is communism (because they had money, they had own men to do dirty jobs). While here, the communist was literally fighting with their idea and also being used as a pawn by their higher-ups.

My dad was born in Butuan City 1954 during this particular time that Johnny participated as an exchange student. What my dad told me, during his schooling that our country had "current events" subject or discussion where they gather newspapers discussing it everyday and archive it for an entire year. It was part of their curriculum that's why highschool students in the early 1950s, 1960s and 1970s were super aware of what's going on, in their society despite of the lesser technology compared to what we have today.. My mom is Japanese born in the Philippines.. despite the war our country received Japanese naturalized to Filipinos to our society.. Our countrymen were that forgiving and open to people who embraced our culture.

    Johnny(The Philippines) was right to say that an individual should be criminalized and be persecuted for his/her participation in an act of which any nation finds unlawful. In the context where Johnny said " the minute a man joins a society with a purpose of killing, and cutting your throat, he became a traitor to that society ", that is one of the many reasons that there is now a law against being a part of any terrorist group.
    I wanted to say Johnny was way ahead of his time and some of his opponents, but that would be an insult to their generation. Our generation now has diminished greatly that most, if not all, individuals of our time are inclined to contend in a debate but without the failure of attacking or taking the rebuttal personally.

      Basically Ram is less aggressive. He wasn't reacting to attacks. Johnny was better at that because he didn't take attacks sitting down. However, he went very aggressive on communism. I understand that his country was going through a communist problem but asking to outlaw communism is not correct. If that were the argument, the same can be said about Islam. Muslims keep maintaining that Muslims are together a brotherhood irrespective of their nation. Sometimes foreign agents (sponsored by an Islamic country) are offered shelter by local Muslims. By the same logic, Islam should be banned in non-Muslim countries. And yet a small criticism of Islam invokes violent reprisals and cancellation from all. Why can't we give the same dignity to someone who holds communist ideals?

They don't travel as much as we do now, doesn't spend their time playing games, engaging in social media, etc. And the only source of information they can easily have is thru publications (newspapers, magazines, books) which often talks about current affairs, unlike now where information (both the good ones and the trash) is blasted thru the internet. And right now, an issue trends for a week or so and then it stops trending, but back then (as my grandfather claims) a trending issue often stays for a very long while, years- which I say adds depth to one's understanding, the longer everyone discourses about an issue, the deeper the understanding on it would be.

Although he is well-versed and informed in the general system of the government and up to times with his own government, he has a horrible characterization and attitude as shown by his dismissiveness, arrogance and own ignorance. A similar situation was there in india too where there was a community named untouchables, no one was supposed to touch them hence they felt separated from the world.The time you compare a person or a community to a rattle snake for just his ideologies or thoughts, the more they will try to prove they are right in what they are thinking creating rebellion.. @@lonewolf.s.n.4083 The Communist Party of the Philippines, New People's Army or CPP-NPA in a nutshell is a terrorist group with a goal of overthrowing the government to get rid of democracy and capitalism to replace it with communism. If we remove NPA we are left with CPP which is no longer a terrorist group but has the exact same goal. How they will reach that goal is by bringing in the NPA part where they are freely recruiting (because of democracy) to this day in the Mindanao area. They can simply deny being part of the NPA while they are still training and all is well.
      Johnny's argument is recognizing the danger where there is evidently one so we can get rid of the problem. Prevention is better than cure as how the doctors put it. Even then, since multiple damages through terrorist attacks already happened in the past, getting rid of the communist party today is just removing the tumor which was left growing for decades.
      As I see it, the other's stance is freedom and democracy above all else even to the extent wherein the people and democracy itself are at risk.
