Way back when farmers can have a decent life. My grandfather was a farmer too and he managed to send all 12 children to school. Also he bought hectares of land as well. Farmers these days are so undervalued and not compensated enough for their hard work. This is what happens when the system only made for the rich.
Right. When I was a kid, I couldn't help but overhear my grandparents' and parents' conversations. They would talk about the lands they bought, and the lands that they own. I was surprised because our family is only middle-classed, but my grandparents afforded to buy lands. Sorry if my grammar ain't good though.

I am one of the baby boomers and this video brings back a lot of memories for me, I was born in the mid 50's and used to live in San Fernando Pampanga PH. I remember vividly the "Kalabaw", meals eating dried fish, garlic fried rice, living in a Nipa hut made out of bamboo leaves and bamboo. There was no running water so we have to collect water from the public "Poso or water pump" using a bucket, no toilet back in the days as this was after the WW2. That was our everyday normal routine / life and we don't know any better. Looking back, a lot has changed since then and now but I'm just glad I have experienced that kind of life, otherwise I won't appreciate the life I have today. The Gender Equality has improved now but men still get paid more than women for the same job. The modern convenience has a lot of improvement this day and age. The advanced technology like cars, phones, household appliances, etc.. My 2 cents? Life was much simpler back in the days than today but I won't trade the fresh running water and the modern plumbing like toilet, shower and bathtub. I know that there's a lot of ppl in this world sleeping like we're still the 50's but I hope their life improves as the time goes by like mine.
Sometimes I'm embarresed by some of the filipinos i see online or at a distance. They're so obliviously childish sometimes and it irks me a bit. Especially how sexist or racist some adults are
Renn Loise Chatto I feel like a boomer saying this but it’s those damn daytime game shows that I see my parents always watching on tfc lol. I respect my parents but they do tend to act childish sometimes.
A lot of people spoke and still speak English well but I wonder if this guy reading is the actual farmer. He mispronounced tuyo and other Filipino terms. I have a feeling they just got someone , possibly from Mexico to read a script.
I seriously dont believe thats a filipino. Angela points this out as well. They mispronounce a lot of native words and the way they speak doesnt sound anything near a filipino fluent in english does. It sounds like someone fluent in english pretending to have an accent.
What I learned from this is that the life before is simple but full of joy. People are contented with the life they had. They're educated, the girls have subjects like home economics which is a skill for people to know not just for girls. Children, all the people being seen in this video, are very hard-working, very respectful, and diligent. Glad this came up on my recommendation.
I observed how people way back who were just elementary graduates were so fluent in English either speaking or writing. My grandpa who is just a 1st year high school graduate in the 1940's can speak professional English and can make speeches in English.
@@devvv4616 right, that's one great factor to consider why they were so good in English way back then. And yeah, I have noticed that kids nowadays are more inclined in using English or were taught English first that they tend to be more fluent with it and have the struggle of using their mother tongue and even Filipino language.
As a Mexican myself I feel a sort of connection with the Philippines. Life in the countryside of Mexico in the 1950’s was similar as in the Philippines. Saludos amigos filipinos 👋
Sobrang nakakamiss simpleng buhay noon. Nakkamiss yung excited kang bumangon tuwing umaga. Sa umagahan pandesal at kape lang masaya na. Tapos buong araw naglalaro sa labas grabi sayaaa. As a filipino, rice is everyday with us. Breakfast, rice. Lunch, rice. Dinner, rice. I love rice. Fun Fact: In the Philippines, I always wake up at like, 4AM and inside the house wakes up at 6AM, and in America I wake up at like, 8-11AM.

I kinda get the feeling that the narrator isn't actually the farmer, but an American doing his best to sound like a Filipino speaking English. There's just a lot of inconsistencies with his accent, and some of the ways he pronounces words are not at all how Filipinos pronounce them.
@jevon bernardes Are you serious!? you make me laugh so hard, gosh! okay I’m no expert but I’m positively sure he’s no American doing his best to sound like a filipino. I mean come on! He sound exactly like filipino man who speaks fluent English. It was a documentary about the life of a typical filipino family who are Farmers back in the 50’s. The narrator might be an actor, journalist or an English teacher. He doesn’t sound American at all.! I mean are kidding me! His Tagalog pronunciation was spot on. I can’t even wrap my head around your comment. And add to my annoyance are the people who acknowledges your comment! I reckon you never met a decent Filipino who speaks fluent English. What a shame.
@@Maya-yp2ey I have met a lot of Filipinos who speak fluent English. Ones with accents, and ones without. None of the Filipinos with accents I've ever heard remotely speak the way he does. He can't pronounce tagalog words, and he even butchers his children's names. There's no consistency in the way he speaks at all. It also doesn't make your point to say that he doesn't sound American, because I wasn't saying that he sounds American. I was saying he's trying to fake what a fluent English-speaking Filipino would sound like. I only assumed he was American, because this is an American documentary. Even if you look up old footage and dialogues of fluent English-speaking Filipinos from that era, none of them sound like him. What I've said in my original comment is most likely true, because America, during the 50's, wasn't very inclusive to foreigners with anything. It was an era when most of the country was very racist, especially Hollywood and other film industries in the country. So it wouldn't be a stretch to believe that they hired a white man to do a voice over pretending to be a Filipino.
I genuinely thought that the narrator was an American man trying to impersonate a Filipino accent! The farmer speaks English so articulately wonderful narrator!
I bet it is what you thought. They filmed all of this, interviewed some of the locals and pieced ot all together in a script in which they Americans narrated
Im a filipino 19 and wanted to live like this, simple life not too poor not too rich, theres always food in the table complete fam. And NO DEBT OFCOURSE.
Yikes my dude, are u even trying to think? Cancer was considered "rare" that time, and who the hell needs wifi if i can enjoy myself in that timeline without too much pollution in the air, and kids on their phones the whole time...Smh, and basically, yes, technology does make our lives more easier, but imagine the side effects of too much radiation impacted within the human body.
Felt so lucky to be able to watch this in 2021! Their life there was very simple. And the man’s voice who narrates this gives me the classic vibes! ❤️🇵🇭
When you realize our parents' childhood is lived in the best version of our country. Edit: For context, my parents were born in the 50's. This comment was not meant to generalize generations of parents born prior or beyond that decade.
These are idealised visions of home life but as someone who might be old enough to be your father and one who has friends who grew up in farms and plantations, it's not as idyllic as these scenes appear to be. It's a hard scrabble life. What's the indication of that? Just look at the need and failure of land reform. It was meant to pull these people out of poverty but the advancing average age of farmers show how difficult it is for the next generation to take over. The need for capital and competition from more efficient farming in other countries squeeze margins and starve farmers.
Sabi ng lola ko, 89 years old sya. Nung kabataan nya pinapatay lang yung iba ng mga hapon. Tas mahirap daw pumunta sa skwela, pangit ang daan. Legal din daw pagpapaasawa sa gusto ng magulang. Halos pahirapan din daw sa pera. Masmaganda daw yung panahon ngayon, maspeaceful at masmasaya.
Same as my grandma. Life is very simple before and all the youths are disciplined and very respectful (especially to the elderly people). That’s what my grandma said to me and to my other cousins. Also, most of the men before are very gentlemen. She told lots of stories to us during the old times.
I was born in 1996 and I live in the rural area of Cebu. I feel so blessed for being one of the few who last experienced this kind of Philippines. Our public classrooms were also old like what was shown in this video. I get to play "luksong lubid", tug of war, and a lot of traditional Filipino games during my elementary years. I got to dance different kinds of Filipino folk dances. And every afternoon we would walk home on foot, passing by the what was once a majestic beautiful lake we called "lamak" with many farmers and carabaos working until sun down. Those were golden years. The years where we still don't have smartphones and computers. The air was fresh and we would take off our shoes everytime we pass by the lake to feel the smooth green grass-covered soil. I feel so blessed to have experienced it all.
@OccupieD Something Yeahh dude ikr. Sure, might not be convenient like today's lifestyle but I would take some chances just to breathe in those years..
Philippines 1950s: One of the most powerful and richest country in Asia after japan...one of the peacefull country no much war...Filipinos are so very dicipline and simple life no too much crimes environment are so very rich...they are working hard with Happiness. Philippines now: "sana ol" we can bring back this classic, joy, rich and simple life if the filipinos can make like this dicipline peoples without pataasan ng pride payabangan etc.
It feels nostalgic but it’s not. I was born in 1993 but watching this feels like it was my past. Maybe because i was born and raised in the countryside and that my father is also a farmer. And maybe because, this is exactly what my grandmother used to tell me what and how was the Philippines those good old days. Really really great video, Sir!
My grandma is from the Philippines and when she talks about her home she always talks about how much she loved it even though her mom and dad weren't rich. She's told me so many times about her dad coming home from work and always bringing a cookie for her and other siblings, I'll go there one day.
no need to be born at that time to be nostalgic. even in the 90's and early 2000, this kind living still exist. example is when we visit our grandparents in the province or great grand parents
But most Philippine farmers today don't speak English. Too much pride in dying languages is holding millions of people back. Also, schools focus way too much on arts and on contests. Because of rampant corruption in the Philippines--in every level of government--most industries are weak compared to other countries in the region. So English proficiency was the only advantage Filipinos had...but it's fading. :(

I shed a tears watching this short video about the simple yet, happy life in my beloved country The Philippines. Back then life was less complicated. People are not corrupted by greed, technology and stuff. Filipinos were very family oriented, Polite, Friendly and resilient living a productive life after WWII ended. Good all days I won't mind living in nipa hut plowing fields, walking bare footed and live without much technology if it means living a life peacefully with respect and dignity. I want a time machine. Kudos to the uploader. Thank you with all my heart.
Watching this docum during quarantine because of the '19 NCorona virus makes me wanna go back for a while to this kind of provincial life, very humble and optimistic 💛.
I'm a big fan of Filipinos and their country's culture, the people's courage and resilience, and their huge pool of talents that had sent numerous physicians, nurses, engineers, and hardworking professionals abroad. I just wish that the endemic poverty would soon dissipate so that the new generations of Filipinos would finally find health, happiness, and enduring success which they truly deserve after so much political troubles, devastating calamities, and massive challenges thrown at them.
im filipino, im inclined to think that people now forgot how to think, couldn't be bothered to do their research, most of us are detached from reality, we have no virtues to uphold. we have elected a marcos back to power. shameful. im not surprised anymore. we've elected a criminal "duterte" (who openly admitted he killed people- criminals specifically but people nonetheless, violating their rights) and people continue to admire and praise his "leadership". we've elected his daughter for vice president 😒 you can't possibly imagine how disappointed i am with the state of my country. democracy is dead when people are fed lies and votes being bought. im beginning to hate the country and my fellow filipinos. and people who elected idiots and criminals to power moan about wanting good governance but electing them back to power. leni robredo could've brought the country to greatness and uniting people, bringing a sense of pride of being a filipino. we could've had it all. she had good intentions. women, in my opinion are better leading the country than men, take a look at new zealand, they handled covid better than most countries, queen elizabeth i and queen victoria, their country thrived under their reign.

My parents grew up in the Philippines and we migrated to the US when I was still 7, they told me about the life of hardship they had to go through to provide me the life I have right now, my parents helped both of their families, but unfortunately their siblings married too early and have children, then they asked too much from my parents to help my cousins education, my grandparents also asking my dad to pay for em' , my family was barely living. I haven't finished my college but I'm already a thousand dollars in debt in college loan and I have to get a part time job but still my grandparents asking my parents way too much. All because some of my relatives are lazy to work and just relying for financial assistance while pressuring my dad just because they thought that we have a better life here in the US, we're not rich, we're just like every other simple families. This is the reason why I no longer want to go back nor talk to my relatives.
Common thing to happen when a family member or a relative goes abroad, families or relatives left behind in the Philippines already think of them as a money dispenser and sometimes get mad if not being helped out. Life abroad is not easy.

super fly - Hey, if you are living in the Philippines, then you are part of it. I don't live in the Philippines by the way. Truth is, Cory Aquino destroyed the Philippines... she was NOT elected, she had NO EXPERIENCE as a leader of a country, she was NEVER a government ELECTED official even as a barangay captain she was NOT... she was the reason why the Philippines became poor because of Cory Aquino's INCOMPETENCE as the president that was NOT elected, and she was WITHOUT any idea how to run a 3rd world country that was already ahead of its neighbors... pero pinabagsak pa ni Cory ang sana mayaman na ang Pilipinas..

Capitalism : good Communism : satanic Colonialism : satanic Fascism : satanic Like, YOU don't know anything about politics, don't talk about that, colonialism isn't "fearing for your life", you're pretty much FINE if you follow the rules. Colonialism is defined as “control by one power over a dependent area or people.” It occurs when one nation subjugates another, conquering its population and exploiting it, often while forcing its own language and cultural values upon its people. Not only did the Spaniards come to force their religion and culture on us, they built the CODE OF LAW, they built Towns, they built Cities, They built churches, they built docks/ports, they built sewage systems, they built canals, etc. If Spain never colonized Philippines, we would be a part of China, Brunei, or even the kingdom of Sulu.
@@laurencenathalieraniego1639 You're pretty stupid, before the Spaniards and Portuguese, Filipinos were killing eachother, there were numerous kingdoms around the country, this was stopped when the code of law was made by the Spaniards, "living in fear" is an exaggeration. If you lived before the 1500s your family is pretty much in danger, you could be attacked by other Filipinos hungry for food, you could be attack by banded tribes, you could be attacked by the kingdom of Sulu, you could be attacked by the numerous sultanates around the country, like, do you even study history?, Don't even forget about the diseases, malaria was widespread.
Kahit 20 na ako ngayun, I still can relate to the video. I still remember the day my father thought me how to drive a carrabao and how to take care a goat. I would wake up 5am everyday to tie the goat to an area where there is an abundance of grass from which it will feed and a nice shade to protect himself from the heat of the sun. I remember whenever i visit my lola, she would fill their little swimming pool with hot water (because luckily, the spring, their water source, is hot) and i would play and swim their all morning then catch some tilapias in their pond nearby for lunch. Good times. This video really shows the most typical and simpliest life of a filipino in a province. Fun fact: Mahirap lang kami at lumaki ako sa province.

Even though this was so long ago and so many things have changed in the Philippines, I can almost hear the party going on and the joy Ramon has when he receives his gifts and plays with his schoolmates. Life has not been kind to the Philippines, but if there’s one thing that never changes, it’s the genuine hospitality and familial love Filipinos hold in their hearts. It is the strength that keeps us together.
The Philippines was 2nd richest in the 1950’s, not 60’s nor 80’s. In the 80’s, China, India, Thailand, Indonesia, and South Korea were all ahead of the Philippines. In 1960, Philippines was 3rd largest in Asia, behind Japan and India.
I am an American who sought a woman from your country in 2008 because I work with Filipinas and my doctor is Filipino and i researched the values of the people. I was fortunate to marry the woman I'd been corresponding with. While on an airplane ride from Manila to Cagayon I struck up a conversation with a distinguished older Filipino seated next to me. He introduced his wife, a newspaper editor, and shared that he'd been in government with Ferdinand Marcos. He told me to look out the window at the green as far as you could see. He said, " We have one of the longest growing seasons in the world, we have an educated population, we were a developing country but now we are third world...." My takeaway was he was lamenting what should be now, where the country should be as opposed to where it is. I loved his sharing his thoughts.

And yeah, I have noticed that kids nowadays are more inclined in using English or were taught English first that they tend to be more fluent with it and have the struggle of using their mother tongue and even Filipino language.
i think, if im not mistaken. english was a mandatory subject to schooler, just like speaking in spanish before.

I kinda get the feeling that the narrator isn't actually the farmer, but an American doing his best to sound like a Filipino speaking English. There's just a lot of inconsistencies with his accent, and some of the ways he pronounces words are not at all how Filipinos pronounce them.
The way he says tuyo lol
Yeah condescending accent by a White guy trying to sound like a Filipino
MAY TORRES idk why you’re so pressed about this lol but his accent does sound very inconsistent, coming from filipino
I genuinely thought that the narrator was an American man trying to impersonate a Filipino accent! The farmer speaks English so articulately wonderful narrator!
you thought right
Ugh, No. He mispronounced tuyo and other fil terms. Im gonna guess he's a 50s American narrator for the show.
@@vduck7354 This is back from 1956 they had slightly different accents and pronunciation. Even today some areas have slower or faster pronunciation 😗

Not really. Modern Filipinos have much better living standards compared to the 50's.

My god, is this politics to you?
Capitalism : good
Communism : satanic
Colonialism : satanic
Fascism : satanic
Like, YOU don't know anything about politics, don't talk about that, colonialism isn't "fearing for your life", you're pretty much FINE if you follow the rules.
@@laurencenathalieraniego1639
You're pretty stupid, before the Spaniards and Portuguese, Filipinos were killing eachother, there were numerous kingdoms around the country, this was stopped when the code of law was made by the Spaniards, "living in fear" is an exaggeration.

But today we are nowhere near 5th
@@santiagocortez9554 Never any disrespect to Filipinos or Philippines. I am sometimes saddened to witness some Filipinos emulating the material/superficial side of the American lifestyle at the expense of such a culturally rich and resilient people !
When my country wasn't poor and a laughing stock. I can only watch the good times of the Philippines.
I don't know if that's a fact but i do feel like we are a laughing stock
@@mythoughtsexactly2145 Yeah I feel the same way. Gotta thank out beloved politicians through the years for that
bc the media present us as this but they never show the good sides of our country :/
leanne ray because we shouldnt just represent the good, we should represent the good and bad to showcase reality.
Rai Hanah i agree w you, but all the media ever does show is the bad more than the good
Before: Even the farmers can speak English fluently
Nowadays: They only speak English in TikTok

That farmer's life seems too unrealistically comfortable from what most of the farmers' living condition back then.
You Do Note Cassie i know many farmers and it’s actually that comfortable depending on a man’s outlook in life. if he’s content and happy with that life, he’s gonna be happy for the rest of his life with hard times but still happy. plus they had better lands then than farmers nowadays. nakakainggit nga sila kung tutuusin andaming kabayo at kalabaw at kambing at baka at prutas ng mga farmers
In a livong proof that life in the province, thats all true. The nioa hut, the carabao, the banig for sleeping, the kitchen tools qmd everything, I used to experiences most of these, some were oyr neighbors life.
Definitely staged. The father and son look so clean when they leave the field. They use fork and knife to eat when most farmers would actually use their hands. It looks a bit like some kind of propaganda film
it's a matter of perspective. :)
It is because the difference of Philippine currency. Mura lang kasi ang mga bilihin noon kesa ngayon na nag 2x ang presyo.

Magsaysay was the President of that time.

hahaha, nice try: Ramon Magsaysay is already the President of the Philippines in 1956.

That's why Philippines is the 2nd richest country in Asia in 1960's said somebody in the top comment.
No
$1 : ₱50
Today's Philippine is making us Filipino poor. Before $1 is P20, now its P50, and they raised the jeepney rides from P7 to P9 in 1 year!
Wow, thnx. I actually didn’t know about this!! Nice facts 👍🏻
When I first came to the Philippines in 1964 the rate was 3 peso to the dollar and they were silver

The farmer's accent sounds like he's German or Italian.
news5aksionfan661 more like mexican. americans and their stereotypes. lol
Cheryl Hemota they prob got a Mexican to do the voice over instead of a real Filipino cuz “they’re almost the same” 🙄
The Farmer's accent is a white guy trying to do a pinoy accent! Trust me. That's why it sounds like it's Mexican because that's what they knew in Hollywood those days. That's a fake accent man!!! FAKE! Listen to that piece.
The cameral man shot the footage and it was edited back LA. Trust me. The voice overs were from some Mexican actor. Trust me.
Check the accent yet beyond perfect grammar. LOL
I think so coz the accent when he spoke in Filipino sounded like a foreigner.
You were correct...Definitely not pinoy.
I've seen old videos of the US and some in Asia. Never thought there would be one about the Philippines. This warms my heart, thank you for taking me back in time.
my dad was born in 1950. I, 37 right now. And this gave me a glimpse how they lived. Muchas gracias mi amigo
The camera they used is really good for 1950’s
I think it's originally black and white,
Either that or the footage was just well preserved, or both.

nope, it's now 1st, number 1 on corruption.
Aquinos ruined it
Other countries used the Philippines for their own good. Even when the Philippines is not even free from the colonization of americans there's already corruption happening.
not richest but economy they are different
