  • Schools Should Teach their Students to be Global Citizens Instead of Instilling Nationalism / 학교는 학생들에게 국가주의 대신 세계 시민이 되도록 가르쳐야한다
This House Believes that Schools Should Teach their Students to be Global Citizens Instead of Instilling Nationalism
The United Kingdom left the European Union, the U.S. declared an "America First" foreign policy, and many European countries are becoming increasingly hostile to refugees in order to protect their countries. The battle between globalists and nationalists has become the central axis of conflict within and across many nations around the world. The idea of global citizenship is that one's identity transcends geography or political borders and that responsibilities and rights can be derived from membership in a broader class: "humanity." Nationalism vs. cosmopolitanism... what should schools teach their students in this era of globalization?
After the fierce 13 rounds of the tournament, Minjok Leadership Academy was crowned the champion of "Intelligence - High School Debate." This week, they will compete against the representative champions from Singapore, China and Japan.
Who will be crowned the winner of the 2017 Asian Cup?

As an Indonesian, I also agree to be a global citizen, so people can accept others easily as they used to do. In my opinion, becoming a global citizen surely makes people not become racist more, although not all people who have a great feel of nationalism are racist.

Islam prohibits any act of violence or aggression towards innocent peaceful people . Yes violence is authorized in some cases like defending own homes or even responding if necessary in case of any exterior aggression. Hence those people you're are bringing into this discussion are not civilized and 100% defying the teachings of Islam. Even true Muslims are stating this , it's unseen to the majority of the globe because the media is politically biased and spreads misinformation at any given moment . @joyiwan 3 года назад +9

Both government benches did a fantastic job. I wish I was this eloquent in high school. Bravo!
However, to be fair, this was a difficult motion to oppose. One argument I can think of is this: Using education as a tool to promote the concept of global citizenship over a nationalist mindset will mean restructuring the education syllabus and potentially removing access to certain parts of our culture.
Taking language as an example, promoting a globalist mindset would mean that more widely-spoken languages in the world take priority over our mother tongue. For instance, if you're a Thai citizen, you might have to learn English, Mandarin, Hindi, AND Spanish in school. Although beneficial in an international context, this realistically means that less attention and emphasis will likely be given to the Thai language.
Taking history as an example, promoting a globalist mindset would mean that if our history textbook remains at the same number of pages, a majority of those pages will educate students on international history. It will teach us the biggest and deadliest wars, the most influential dictators, the most prominent treaties and agreements. It sounds fantastic, but if everyone (regardless of nationality) only knows about the 'important' parts of history, who will remember the 'smaller' parts of history?
This isn't to say that those knowledge are mutually exclusive. However, everything comes at a cost. Including new parts into a syllabus means replacing existing parts.
Ideally, we would love to learn as much about the world as possible. Realistically, however, one cannot expect students to take on 20 subjects if they had previously been only taking 10.

I feel debates should have translator earpiece that every person could wear. So that the debater can speak in their native language. They do this in the united nation, when they allow different countries to speak. This way it is more authentic and easy for them to debate.

how a debate works is you're given a motion and a side, opposition and proposition. a motion can be presented one-sided or neutral statement - that's how it is. however, for any motion there will always be two sides e.g. agree/disagree for a one-sided statement, both sides will have limitations and different perspectives. whether you're able to deliver enough points and/or examples is dependent on your skill, general or relevant knowledge and mentality (confident, anxious etc) during the debate. there's nothing unfair about it.

Tbh, opposition team is already in a huge disadvantage, since their argument (despite all the reasoning) is not so valid in the modern world we now live in.
And their poor command of English puts them in an even more disadvantaged position.
I don’t know a lot about debating. I believe it’s about you making points and justify them in various ways to persuade the audience.
But without basic command of a language, it is very hard to make your speech clear and easy to for the audience to comprehend in the first place.
Also, not to mention that debates are very responsive and have time constraint.

nationalism can win easily if they keep asking gov what is mechanism of implementation to avoid certain country from losing their national identity if school teach globalism instead of nationalism. Moreover, about solving world problems, if individual understand well enough how global trade works people will against terrorism, understand well enough abt climate change people will donate to combat climate change. and if people have strong love to their country, refuges issue will not exist at the first place. Nationalism is more important to be taught at school, so that students will contribute to their country and solve local issues, (pollution, poverty, harmony and political stability). If each citizen take care of their country, global problems will not exist. Ohh yaa abt skin color, is a job of that country to tell their citizen that citizenship is not based on skin color.

"if citizen take care of their country, global problem wouldn't exist"
Well, wait until USA and Russia make a move!
I think it easier to give an argument at the government side because the inexorical advance that we called as civilization is moving slightly fast, globalisation is affecting significant role, the world apparently become more connected so people understand each other better, because of social media and internet people could see the other side of a world easily, government could give a command and make a move just by foreshadowing the circumstances from screen, conscious or unconscious we are doing everything indeed pretty close to remotely, globalisation is important sincerely the digital currency such as crypto currency is more easier to convert (and more fair) If the world has only one currency (I know there is a lot of counter argument about 'only one currency'), and apparently we can dispersed misunderstood if we understand what every person said(the solution would be: every people understand one global language, and in order to reach that point we must teach globalisation in school). I'm not telling you to abandon your local language but because of globalisation its very important to learn global language that majority of people conceive! And who knows probably in the future there is gonna be one country, erased the border across the land; and form only one country at this terrestrial, and that country name is earth

If you let a fluent English speaker debate against a non-English speaker, for sure most people would probably prefer the English speaker because obviously English is the universal language, and. Maybe if the opposition party had more fluent speakers, people would understand their position very well.

Well umm if somehow agree with points of China and Japan, their points were quite good..but here if as Indian i have to put some points on debate supporting why seeing ourselves as global citizen should be 2nd priority i would have proposed these points---
    1. First as it was said by the speakers of for the motion that seeing ourselves as a global citizen led as well increase humanitarian feeling, what I believe is true but teaching and influencing school students bout being a global citizen is another aspect, sense of national citizen is more important because when individuals see themselves connected with their country and people and country problem it's gives another boost to youth, and being pratical being acceptable and welcoming to everyone what gives us, taking example of india what being welcoming to others gives us -*colonization* or being humanitarian in 1950 and 1955 towards China gives us what being not part of unsc and other important organization. Well what here I'm telling is not meant raising bout some political issues bw countries but it's bout being pratical what being so much acceptable gives us..
And now jumping to the point that education should not be bout wheather being a global citizen or a national citizen, education teach us being humble so that we can accept everyone , and bout being understanding ourselves as global citizen will come with that, but a sense of nationalism is must .
When we see people being bullied in different country and their inhumantarian act towards different race it's not cause they seek themselves as one country person and other' as intruder but it's cause of their lack of moral and humbleness,we see people around us being acceptable and unacceptable and it have no relation with taht people don't see themselves as global citizen.... Well in this 21st century where we see globalisation in its peak being global citizen is necessary but not essentially important.
And I'll end it with ques who will put water in others house when your own is on fire.?!
Being global citizen is helpful but understanding and seeing ourselves with our roots and country must. Isn't it??

A Filipino intellectual is anything but slow, subversive yes, perhaps they are slow in your point of view because they are well aware that there are countless metaphysical facets to consider before coming to a logical conclusion about ANY subject. Many ‘intellectuals’ especially east Asians tend to hide the immoral and amoral aspects of their societies and thought processes with sophistry, we see through this and rather than playing defense and ultimately ‘losing’ in discourse initiated in bad faith, we’d rather not play at all.

You live in one home with your family. Similarly, the planet consists of many homes or countries. You can care about the whole neighborhood but will always be the owner of your own home where you live with your family. It's the same with your country as well.

The 2nd speaker claimed that school education should provide students with their own choice for what to learn and should not force them to learn what the government or politicians want. But then, it violates their argument as well, because Japanese team was for the education of nationalism, not for individual's right, so that it is way far from the team's initial point of argument. So, at the point i heard his argument, i wondered what i was hearing. But even the judges doesn't seem to have recognized it.. how weird it is...

Ngl, i feel like the Singaporean and Korean teams had an unfair advantage due to the fact their speakers were much more fluent in English compared to the Chinese and Japanese students. I wonder how the debate would have turned out if the roles were switched? Nationalism is a harder topic to argue for, since nationalism is putting your country's interests first and viewing other countries with detriment which makes it a negative topic compared to global citizenship which is striving towards And with the additional fact that the Chinese and Japanese students weren't as fluent, this debate and the winners are quite clear from the start it would be the students arguing for global citizenship. Nonetheless this was a great debate and quite impressive

  • @DrDanielHoward
    @DrDanielHoward 7 лет назад +54

I believe that the nationalists missed very important points I will try to advance for them here. If we overemphasize the "global citizen" perspective we lose sight of transgressors. For example, from 1400-1930 European fathers had five sons and this led to idle men who waged war and conquered the world and this over production of sons also led to WW1 and WW2. Today Muslim nations have an even higher fertility with places such as West Bank Palestine with six sons per father. Nationalism and opposition to immigration then become important tools of defence and help the offending nations to understand what they are doing wrong. For example, the offending nations need to educate women to encourage them to have first born after the age of 23 in which case mothers go from having 12 babies to having 2 babies and the problem of terrorism, hunger, mass immigration, is solved. Also, if the USA had been more nationalistic they would have stopped Japanese, Korean and Chinese students from taking all of the know-how from American and European technical universities. On balance, and quite possibly, the west was damaged by that and sent from having Bell Labs engineers leading societies to having lawyers and MBAs who cannot do math "leading" societies that now are hungry for interesting STEM jobs and which are in massive debt. Take a country such as England with Darwin, Newton, and so many wonderful scientists: did they need foreign students or so many foreign professors to advance? If we are honest we must categorically answer that in the negative. To summarize this point, female inclusive values are one side of the story but male exclusive values are neglected by John Lennon type of beliefs in "global citizenship". Excluding people or discrimination takes place in the derivative professions of law, medicine, accountancy, management with many great people excluded based not on the absence of advanced degrees but on the absence of some "professional qualification" (Chartered Accountant diploma, etc) and prevented from practicing - it is many of these professionals who having received the benefit of the closed shop are pushing the "global citizen" ideology.
There exist other points. The "invisible hand of Adam Smith" which underpins and justifies capitalism assumes that the generated wealth and employment will be spread GEOGRAPHICALLY NEAR the source. With six billion people earning less than 2 USD per day, the recipe of globalization is to make everyone poor. Hence, the national agenda signifies caution not to destroy the local society that generates the intellectual property and that invests in the education of its citizens. Almost all inventions have come from national R&D in pursuit of nationalistic causes, e.g. WWs, Moon Landing, Cold War, etc. Without these innovations entrepreneurs would be far less successful (there exist entrepreneurs among the Indians of the Amazon jungle who are as able as Bill Gates and Steve Jobs but
who do not have technology). As with Signal Processing there is a balance to be found between locality of interpolation and globality of interpolation. We must prevent the landscape from becoming overly smooth and running rough of the important local details which are not the noise. Along these mathematical lines exists another argument. If we encourage too much fluidity of cross border operation to multinationals we easily create the scale free network, with employment and know-how nodes emerging in particular locations with most locations in the world de-industrialized. Nationalism acts as a damping force preventing the emergence of these geographical scale free clusters and protecting the employment of citizens. A final point is that not all cultures are equal but some are more honest than others. An honest culture risks the advent of corruption if it opens its borders and preaching "global citizen" is of grave danger to such countries. One must not overplay nationalism but identity is healthy to some point. Similarly, the globalists missed some points but their case is easier as it is more popular with young and idealistic people.

    • @chaitanyacg1250

Nicely written, nothing to undermine about what you said on globalization. Since the origin of nations, we were brought up as nationalistic societies (do so religions, castes, traditions etc etc.,), Globalism is still primitive and needs a proper blue print (might take generations). Since, people need to raise above primitive traits which prevailed as nationalistic barrier such as religion*, identity to certain race, color, creed, caste, gender, rich and poor. Values as a human towards fellow human needs to be instilled (not just liberalism...as if fu*ck the society...i don't care traits), values towards nature and intellect needs to be imbibed. In short, in a long run globalisation is the way to prosper (but takes at-least few generations to raise above **religion, color, race and sex. This is the only way to reach spirituality, connect with the cosmic energy, become one with the nature and away from destruction. last but not the least saving the planet and overpopulation.

as a japanese that i am , it takes little pity on japanese and chinese students, because regaldress of what they think , it is hard sruff to express their own opinion in another language.

The koreans are also speaking in their second language.Japanese and Chinese students have no excuse for that.I'm from Bangladesh,a third world country.Despite this most of us can keep up with the Koreans level of expertise in English.what are the Chinese and japanese students lacking that it's unfair to them

Singapore was the most articulated. I'm also a globalist and I'd like her to be my prime minister. Korea debated greatly, too. The language was unfortunantely a detrimentous factor for Japan here. I think it would be better if they have the permission to speak in their native language.

From the look of things, good English doesn’t matter. Powerful arguments and good analysis matters most in all debates...

Singapore killed it. Though the chinese guy wasn’t so articulate and refuting, his partner was logical. South Korea, on the other hand, provided a more concise argument that addresses the motion. I vouch for South Korea to win. However, I feel bad for Japan (even I myself cannot understand their point because of their pronunciation). They had something but the situation put them in a disadvantage.

40:50 2nd Korea speaker is Completely wrong. It's not about black people but mexican. If this debate was held anywhere in the world except Korea, Singapore team would win without a doubt. It shows korean Nationalism. lol

The first girl from singapore was very passionate. No matter if you agree or not with the points she makes, her speech in my opinion seems very convincing because it shows how she truly believes what she is saying. Also when sje answers to qiestions from the opposotion she doesn't do it woth amger bit woth respext of the others point of view. Well done!
