  • Lupe Fiasco Performs "Mural Jr." Acapella
Lupe Fiasco’s discography is both literary and lyrical. The Chicago MC is known for weaving historical references and fictitious characters through his thought-provoking bars, and the new ‘Drogas Wave’ is a concept album about the transatlantic slave trade. On it, he imagines fallen victims, tossed off ships during Middle Passage, as survivors who thrive in an underwater world. Heady stuff. For his live performance of “Mural Jr.” we took him underneath NYC’s Williamsburg Bridge for a shoot that nods to the ‘Drogas Wave’ theme. There’s a clear view of the East River waters next to the downtown Manhattan walkway ‘Lu prowled while rhyming a cappella. His inspired take on the track (the sequel to the ‘Tetsuo & Youth’ original, “Mural”) gains extra emotional clout by insightfully incorporating the local landscape. Hold up!

I'll never forget when I first heard Lupe Fiasco. I was in high school listening to music in graphic design class. I was listening to Lil Wayne - Shotty Bounce. A friend of mine had just got into Lupe Fiasco and told me to listen to it. He played a little bit of Sunshine from Food n Liquor. I didn't really give it chance, went through one ear and out of the other. Then I was like nah listen to this, now THIS SHIT is what goes hard. He listened for like 30 seconds then got pissed off, angrily pulled the earphones out of his ears and said: " I don't want to hear that bullshit!" I was a little confused as to what his problem was.......then put my headphones back in like whatever. He ended up moving shortly after that.
Then a while later after The Cool cam out another one of my friends was talking about how dope Lupe is. I was like okay, maybe I should actually listen to this dude. The song I chose to listen to was "Put You On Game" (Still one of my favorite Lupe songs to this day). Then I went back to Food and Liquor and felt like a huge idiot. I've been a huge fan every since, my favorite rapper of all time.
So if you ever read this Joseph I'm so so sorry for putting that garbage in your ears. If somebody pulled that shit on me today I'd probably want to backhand the shit out of that person.

He's the greatest of all time and no one is talking about his music anymore. What does that say about the world today? I just listened to the whole DROGAS Wave album again, and it's his best since Tetsuo and Youth. Food and Liquor and The Cool were classics too. This man keeps changing the rap game and no one even talks about it.
Lupe's music is like extra-curricular music. You have to really sit down and listen to understand - then do some research to understand some of the more abstract messages, meanings and stories in his lyrics. But it's not easy-entry music, that's probably why no one is talking about this. I just love his music, he truly is a master at his craft.

Lupe, Mr Fiasco; this is why I have been a fan since Da Pack. Your lyricism, the message you want to deliver, your love for the craft, I've missed seeing that in your performances. Anger and hatred are emotions we all have as people, and no one will say yours are unfounded, but without the love for the craft, the desire to actually deliver something of meaning, you return to another preacher screaming to the choir. As fans we, on some level, understand your message innately, (insert dumb it down joke here) but a lot of us also still want to see the artist behind the message. [Verse]
Holy assumption of man into the heaven's sphere
Many mansions fit champions within its seven tiers
Evangelists re-imagine every 11 years
Pause for applause, evolves to what was never here
Born to death, born to die, form the flesh, form the eyes
A veritable storm of winged forms swarms the skies
Marital norms unperformed but the porn survives
In the dorms of the scorn, they keep warm supplies
Gone to lose the use of tooth, horn and thigh
Before I was standing, I was landing
Two one-hand, one-man bands jamming in tandem
He who power naps, then plans gathering ransoms
And maps man's laps in a hand lathered in absinthe
Got a talent trafficking ramblings
And handing out amazing handmade maps of the labyrinth
Out the back of the wagon, out the back of the madam
Out the back of the Magnum, then out the trap of enchantment
Bellerophon with a megaphone, Mega Man
Desert zone, run marathons with sweaters on (sweaters on)
That was so simple but hot in a place where it's so simple but not
Closed temples and old little forgots and rode whole chisels
Cripples who won't miss a salat
The old hoes that they won't give you a shot
But you can get the whole pistol, it's gon' hit you a lot
These are real words from a savage mind
Unmaximized man on an average climb
Who don't deserve the whole truth and only half your time
Fit the life of a whole booth in only half a line
In the future life, I don't even have to rhyme
We'll get the entire Armageddon with only half the signs
Just yields and rail roads, in lush fields with bell tolls
Couple huddles of the unskilled but well told
It's unreal how off one deal to sell souls
And he got em' by the dozen
Medulla oblongata is what got them by the oven
Like how the moonshine is what got him by the cousin
He got her by the bottom and he 'bout to stick his tongue in
Such an unsettling scene
An obscene setting for the unwedding of rings
The sharpest dresser at the unheading of queens
The architecture is something you've never seen
Dream clean, that's three words at the same time
And killed three birds with the same
And won each and every hand with the same bluff and
Answers each and every man with the same question
What is it? But you still wanna know but I already done did it
I ball heavy, the physics, it's all, but it's already specific
If we doing what's already done, that means it's already terrific
That's rather meta-poetic, and just to acknowledge that
As an extra exhibit to what's already within it
The gallery's like the wall space
So I made a gallery of galleries, made of all space
If it was more small, it would be Moore's Law
From the land of the po' where we war, saw
From the hand of a pro to a whore jaw
Make her stand at the store till the snow thaw
Went from paper boy to editor
From throwing Ars Poetica with the arms of Federer
On the porches and steps to the farm houses of settlers
One of several sects who can come and charm the predators
We who measure the measuring tools of measurers
We who pleasure the pleasure tubes of pleasurers
We who lecture at treasured schools of lecturers
We who question the treasured rules of leveragers
Born to death, born to die
Mourn correct: immortalize
In a war, where your performance score is your salary
It's like fantasies combating your mortality
I'm just trying to restore sanities
Sigmund Freud boy, Leroy to your vanity
To instill what kills krill destroys manatee
So heels spill but still seal deals that build factories
What looks Roman senator inner reveals Maccabees
Never just trust off guts, but what's actually, unless it's Kuato's
Now, we back to pillars of salt, I recall back peeling potatoes
In hindsight, maybe attack of killer tomatoes
A seasoned shoulder's carrying plenty Pentium payloads
Now, that's another strata but I was making sense
Then cop out, took the highway and I was making chips
A nappy-head Karate Kid, I was breaking bricks
Can fight like Tekken 5, even taking 6
This rehabilitation, I be taking trips
"Don't Ruin Us" God said, I won't make a dent
Hardly, but I'm still Harvey, I hope this making sense
Devil tooting his own horn, don't come and take a sniff
In the streets you gotta fight, you get punished for taking whiffs
To make that change for your team, you gotta have New Jersey Drive and a stomach for taking whips
I'm just trying to redeem
With these hands full of bars, don't beat me for coming clean
To unify the hooks, if you know it, then come and sing
Don't bust in while I'm sleep, nightmares who come in dreams
Samurais rarely die from another sword
This is 1985 meets the hover board
That was Bobby Johnson potato, just the underscore
Think deep, but don't let it fry your motherboards
Diptych, so now them paintings plural, but this is Jr's Mural

I love when he said I’ll make a gallery filled with galleries. Lupe tends to always think about that which does not end, which might be a reason behind the length of this rap. He believes in celestial power as well as infinitesimal power because he understands it’s truly all the same. I don’t know how coherent this whole rap is, but it does show a man who is very educated and encyclopedic with his mind.

    • @tpsam
      @tpsam 5 лет назад +5

Kxng Sef is it more complex than mural the original one? This one flew completely over my head. In T & Y at least I understood some little things here and there like who empowers roosters getting to top then to fall asleep listening to Bach in which he criticised the music industry and the under appreciation of higher quality artists.
But in murals jr really I miss like 95% of the concepts and ideas

Lupe or Em in a battle? I got my money on Lupe. This man unfortunately won't get his full credit until he is gone or done with music completely years from now. Lyrically this man is untouchable imo. Although Em and Lu are different when it comes to writing and scheme Lupe is just far more insightful and thoughtful in his bars.

    • @Isaiah_McIntosh
      @Isaiah_McIntosh 5 лет назад +10

In a rap battle Lupe might go a bit too far over peoples heads to feel the punch whereas Eminem has that traditional battle rap construction so he might do better there. As pure lyricists though Lupe is a whole tier above em but to be honest so are quite a few others.

Lupe is super complex and is capable of crazy wordplay and punchlines, Em is too in different ways. Em just really knows how to break down his opponents which is why he’s seen as one of the MC’s you don’t wanna speak about.

Lupe's superior lyricism makes me realize that there is an objective way to measure lyrical skill. I wish I or someone else knew exactly how so that it could be proven that he's the greatest lyricist of all time. Unfortunately without such measurements, he is mentioned by most as merely a good MC among many others, or even a great MC, but not widely heralded as the GOAT. Which is a travesty because he's by far the greatest lyricist that Hip-hop music has ever produced and actually one of the greatest artist of music period--a true producer of human excellence!

    • @MysteryMason

Amen, in the future they'll build a supercomputer that can accurately judge the 'lyricalness' of a song, and find out that in this era of rap Lupe's works are so far above everyone else's that he might as well be playing a different game. Alien level lyricism truly, it's as if this man is not of this Earth.

Lupe is without question the greatest rapper/ lyricist /emcee to ever touch the mic. His concepts and bars are way above the ideas mere mortals. Many people have traditional top 10, 5 and 3 lists, but objecticely speaking Lupe is up in the page headers way above where the lists begins where the lines start. This level of skill comes from a lifetime of reading; you can tell the guy reads deep literature and dissects their contents in rhyme form. Wav Files is the greatest rap song I've ever heard!! When he reprimands the seas, forests and stars for assisting the slavers achieve their mission? Mind blown! Mr Fiasco is without a doubt, the undisputed best of all time!

Lyrics 'cause no one else would post:
    [Verse]
Holy assumption of man into the heaven's sphere
Many mansions fit champions within its seven tiers
    Evangelists re-imagine every 11 years
Pause for applause, evolves to what was never here
Born to death, born to die
Form the flesh, form the eyes
A veritable storm of winged forms swarms the skies
Marital norms unperformed but the porn survives
In the dorms of the scorn, they keep warm supplies
Gone to lose the use of tooth, horn and thigh
Before I was standing, I was landing
Two one-hand, one-man bands jamming in tandem
He who power naps, then plans gathering ransoms
And maps man's laps in a hand lathered in absinthe
    Got a talent trafficking ramblings
And handing out amazing handmade maps of the labyrinth
Out the back of the wagon, out the back of the madam
Out the back of the Magnum, then out the trap of enchantment
Bellerophon with a megaphone, Mega Man
Desert zone, run marathons with sweaters on (sweaters on)
That was so simple but hot
In a place where it's so simple but not
Closed temples and old little forgots
And rode whole chisels, cripples who won't miss a salat
The old hoes that they won't give you a shot
But you can get the whole pistol, it's gon' hit you a lot
These are real words from a savage mind
Unmaximized man on an average climb
Who don't deserve the whole truth and only half your time
Fit the life of a whole booth in only half a line
In the future life, I don't even have to rhyme
We'll get the entire Armageddon with only half the signs
    Just yields and rail roads
In lush fields with bell tolls
Couple huddles of the unskilled but well told
It's unreal how off one deal to sell souls
And he got 'em by the dozen
Medulla oblongata is what got them by the oven
Like how the moonshine is what got him by the cousin
He got her by the bottom and he 'bout to stick his tongue in
    Such an unsettling scene
An obscene setting for the unwedding of rings
The sharpest dresser at the unheading of queens
The architecture is something you've never seen
Dream clean, that's three words at the same time
And killed three birds with the same--
And won each and every hand with the same bluff and
Answers each and every man with the same question
What is it? But you still wanna know but I already done did it
    I ball heavy, the physics
It's all, but it's already specific
If we doing what's already done, that means it's already terrific
That's rather meta-poetic, and just to acknowledge that
As an extra exhibit to what's already within it
The galleries lack the wall space
So I made a gallery of galleries, made of all space
If it was more small, it would be Moore's Law
From the land of the po' where we war, saw
From the hand of a pro to a whore jaw
Make her stand at the store 'til the snow thaw
Went from paper boy to editor
From throwing Ars Poetica with the arms of Federer
On the porches and steps to the farm houses of settlers
One of several sects who can come and charm the predators
We who measure the measuring tools of measurers
We who pleasure the pleasure tubes of pleasurers
We who lecture at treasured schools of lecturers
We who question the treasured rules of leveragers
Born to death, born to die
    Mourn correct: immortalize
In a war, where your performance score is your salary
It's like fantasies combating your mortality
I'm just trying to restore sanity
Sigmund Freud boy, Leroy to your Vanity
To instill what kills krill destroys manatee
So heels spill but still seal deals that build factories
What looks Roman senator inner reveals Maccabees
Never just trust off guts, but what's actually
    Unless it's Kuato's
Now, we back to pillars of salt, I recall back peeling potatoes
In hindsight, maybe attack of killer tomatoes
A seasoned shoulder's carrying plenty Pentium payloads
Now, that's another strata but I was making sense
