Celeste | Strawberry Jam - Platforming Perfection | Mod Showcase

  • Strawberry Jam is the best 2D platforming experience I've ever encountered. If this video can get one person to give a try for themselves, I'll consider it a success.
    I still don't know what this video is. Part level showcase, part live reaction, part high level overview of movement mechanics.
    Apologies if I messed up the description of game mechanics and/or terminology anywhere. At the time of recording, had only been exploring the world of modded Celeste for about a month. (I first played vanilla Celeste 5 years ago on the Switch and hadn't touched it since)
    I didn't know the modding scene existed until I stumbled across a RUclips video featuring a GDQ run of Celeste in early February. I thought I'd somehow missed the release of a sequel game!
    (the video in question was Comet625 running Into the Jungle • Celeste Custom Maps by... )
    I have a habit of recording all my game footage (so I can review it later and note where I can improve)
    When I got really sick for roughly a week, I wasn't capable of playing Celeste; too much brain fog. However, I could edit footage I'd already recorded. Started putting this together primarily as a means to learn how to use DaVinci Resolve. I can definitely say I learned a ton throughout the process. (now I know why some creators use a script. And why it made my life so hard to salvage the mic audio. It can be difficult to talk coherently while playing a game!)
    Some in-game music has been replaced. Since this started as a personal project, I selected tracks to fit my mood at the time (or to evoke how I felt while playing the map). I did try and put info cards when the in-game OST was used.
    (random aside: the SJ gyms were masterfully made. It was amazing to have a dedicated zone to practice movement tech. Also, Deathkontrol's Ultra Skool was very helpful for learning how to ultra)
    I'm one of those people who are very critical of their own work. However, if I was forced to say something positive about this project, I'd say I'm really proud of the audio mix. Managed to keep dynamic range with no distortion to mic, in game audio, music, or sound effects.
    Special thanks to J4mpet, Maxx, 3BH, and Dan for the advice and critique.

    minor correction: buffering an ultra jump doesn't kill your speed, you just don't get the 1.2x speed boost from touching the ground. if you only hear the jump sound and not the footstep sound, you buffered the jump
    really interesting video though! SJ really is something special, and this video does an excellent job of getting that across; though i can't watch all of it because i don't want to spoil the remaining expert maps i have to clear

    Such a good video covering so many aspects of SJ!
    Fun fact related to 13:46: some other ways to dash while holding a throwable include using a feather, swimming, and some really jank frame perfect (or at least very precise) timing after hitting a bumper

    • @windrunner6511
      @windrunner6511  Год назад +2

    • @soapee1818
      @soapee1818 Год назад +2

      Dashing with a throwable after hitting a bumper may have something to do with bumper freeze frames (since it's possible to do the same with fish as well) so the frame window is likely somewhere around 4-5 frames

    Your editing skills are really impressive! I’m curious to know what sort of content you’ll be posting on this channel in the future. Judging by your name, I’d expect Stormlight Archive videos, but Celeste is pretty far from that series. Regardless, I’m looking forward to whatever you’ve got cooking.

      For video pacing reasons, I combined all of the Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and Expert lobby gyms into one section. So it probably looks way more intimidating than it actually is.
      There's actually a nice difficulty curve when learning the mechanics for each lobby.
      Give the Intermediate a try! You'll probably surprise yourself :)

      Hollow Knight is one of the rare games that I've fully completed--let's see--I think 3? times over the years. I didn't play much of Godmaster, though. My save file is 107% if I recall correctly.
      Enjoy your time with Strawberry Jam! I'm sure you'll be just fine in Intermediate :) The gyms are amazing for practice, plus you'll continue to improve as you play through maps. Take care!

    One thing that is hard to express is just how big strawberry jam is. For perspective, the all levels tas is currently just under 3 hours long(igt). In other words, you litteraly cannot showcase the whole mod in one video of any reasonable length. Even if we just included the best half of the levels that would still make the video a lot longer(or would force worse showcases). And would still miss many many good levels.

    Question about the recording process - did you play with music muted, or is there a way to separate music from sounds after recording?

    • @windrunner6511
      @windrunner6511  Год назад +1

      I played with the music set to 0, but would often be listening to the OST on a virtual input that wasn't being recorded

    As a puzzle fan, I must say I'm disappointed... that said, the puzzles were totally uncalled for in a platformer game and it is incredibly infuriating that every level finish is needed to unlock some stuff (and some levels were just... bad).
    I'm only in advanced lobby and... holy shit, I didn't realise how cursed it gets later on (with the techniques).
    I absolutely refuse to use the binoculars. If a level _needs_ these, it's a bad level in my mind. I absolutely loved how Squaring the Circle just gave you the directions in the bubbles.
    46:12 Yosi Horikawa's music definitely fit for the levels you chose. Disasterpeace would also fit here (46:12) because, you know, Hyper Light Drifter level? Eager to try that one but, until then, Paint (54:13) is my favourite by far.

      This game is deterministic i.e 0 RNG, and running calculations on a per-frame basis with a variable definition of a frame's length would introduce an element of randomness. Raising FPS or making it variable would impact timings for some of the game's more precise tech to the point of being impractical for humans, whether it be due to a short or inconsistent window for input. While I can get the dislike of a lower framerate in general, the 60fps cap was one of many deliberate decisions that enable players to execute the kinds of maneuvers you will see in speedruns or higher difficulty levels.
