Karl, can you please add music credits to your video (especially the last one). Your music choices are fab and I'm ripping my hair out trying to find one of the tracks. Great work, keep on. Cheers !
reminds me of going backwards in time, watching summoning salt's speedrun histories, and getting to the first history video, and he starts talking about one of the people invovled in the first person
Before Ace decided to run Perfect Dark, Karl was the undisputed champion of this game. Of couse no one is as good as Ace but Karl was the best from us mortals.
As someone who never grew up with either games i got into speedrunning GoldenEye in the summer of 2019, by October of the same year i was almost fully converted to perfect dark and it became my main game of the two. I agree that this game should have seen more attention, but from 2019-2021 Perfect Dark is finally getting the attention it deserves amongst speedrunners as times are being posted in the game more frequently than GoldenEye. Also awesome to see Randy (Eliminator Jr) get an untied sweep on Infiltration
I was the exact same way man. Oh the memories. This game was the one that convinced me to look into the cyber-punk genre, and after I played the first Deus Ex game there was simply no going back.
Karl is such a good storyteller, I had no interest in speedrunning until I ran into his channel. He really gives a sense of history and excitement to every new thing that happens.
Yes, I'm glad to see some love for Perfect Dark! It's always been in the shadow of GoldenEye, being released later and not profiting off the James Bond IP. I love it more though, with better multiplayer, a firing range, secondary gun functions, and much more. I am one of the only few people making custom levels for it, because of the sheer number of new features you can use. Though, just like with everything else, there is much more attention to GE than PD.
Man, I love your videos. I always watch them as soon as they come out and I rewatch them every time I take a break from my studies. I suffer from anxiety and, somehow, you videos always manage to make me feel alright, as if there's really nothing to be worried about. The reason I'm writing this comment is because you just uploaded on my birthday, and this, my friend, is one of the best gifts I could have asked for. Thank you, you absolute legend😊
You've done the impossible Mr. Jobst. You have finally made me watch a sponsor segment in its entirety thanks to the Final Fantasy X music in the background :P
Excellent video as always! One of the things that makes the speedrunning community great is that if a glitch comes up, people are supportive and collaborative to use and optimise the strategy, not necessarily worrying about the leaderboard impact to their own records and times. Obviously not universally true for all runners and communities, but generally speaking.
3:45 wait is that paragon x9. The same person as the Newgrounds artist paragon x9 who made the song chaos fantasy, chaos impact, infiltration and a bunch of other really popular newground songs?
It's stuff like this is why I love speedrunning and routing especially. When a new trick is discovered and the potential realised, it's exciting trying to figure out what you can do with it, and just generally messing around and finding new stuff. It's fun as hell.
I think anyone who played both back in the day would agree that Perfect Dark was a step up from Goldeneye in every way and a marvel of what could be achieved on a cartridge. The music and sound quality alone is just so unbelievably good.
Great content as always. It's so weird though...I haven't played PD in >20 years but I remember the level and the objectives. I even remember there is a special trick on the next level to get a phoenix pistol by following some guards into a locked back room. Keep it up.
Karl Jobst, the multi-world record holder who makes videos about other world record holders. This was a really cool video! Thanks! Perfect Dark deserves a LOT more love!
i dont speedrun but i love watching your videos. you make it look so easy that i try it myself and fail miserably. which makes me realize that you speedrunners are very talented.
Your ad sounded so spot on to the actual song that I thought you had put on an MP3 of it for background. I was looking away and playing FFXIV that when I finally looked down I realized it was you playing. Your pacing and timing on piano is incredible Karl. You should upload some videos!
"And [this level] is one of the few that I have never personally attained a world record for"... I love how he just casually drops this comment in the video. Karl Jobst, you are a BEAST.
One thing I miss from older 3d games is how you can mess with cutscenes if you find the actors for them. Seeing a guy fall over dead from an imaginary bullet is just the best.
For a second, my mind broke during the video. I thought the ParagonX9 "top player" was also the ParagonX9 "music producer", who is famius for his Chaoz series
Let's not forget that this was also one of, if not, the first FPS game that had a "ranked" multiplayer system. You could build a customer character and achieve medals for kills or completing goals. It was the forerunner of many games like MOH and COD
I didn't even have the expansion pack and couldn't play ANY missions and my family still loved perfect dark. So many cool weapons. So many cool combinations. You could have cheesy farsight matches, lots of explosives, machine guns, pistols, one hit kill weapons. So many choices! It's a shame in my younger days my map awareness was terrible and we only really played on Pipes.
Perfect Dark > Goldeneye Used to come home and play this with my cousins and brother after college class till 4 in the morning. My grandparents were still alive and Iwas so young. I miss them nights.
I swear To Zanarkand is one of the most used songs out there now.... The FF community always talks about the 1-9 games having amazing music, and yet, X and XII have imo some of the best instrumental AND vocal tracks in not just the entire franchise, but the majority of gaming as a whole. TZ and Suteki Da Ne are both absolute masterpieces, and 12's main theme is like, beyond iconic.
Bro all I’m saying is nights where we had two crt TVs and guys brought two n64s with 2x perfect dark and golden eye and enough to total 8 controllers was the peak of gaming
I've never owned Goldeneye as a kid, I only had perfect dark and for the longest time without the expansion pack but eventually got and It's just Goldeneye on steroids
I remember thinking I was cool that I got the guards to unlock the doors on rescue and re enter infiltration. Zooming around on the hoverbike to see all the deloaded areas was fun, especially the missing hangar doors. I too would have spent hours exploring the out of bounds glitch had I known about it back then.
@KarlJobst can you please add music credits to your video (especially the last one). Your music choices are fab and I'm ripping my hair out trying to find one of the tracks and you'd be an absolute legend for helping out. Great work, keep on. Cheers !
My friends and I played thousands upon thousands of hours of both GE and PD over more than a decade. Perfect Dark will forever remain a top 10 game for me. A remaster would be glorious.
Jobst production is just too good for youtube. Does anyone know if the ParagonX9 featured in the video is the same person that made songs like Chaoz Airflow and Chaoz Impact, thanks :)
