    Dave. I was trucking on i65 in Indiana in 1998 with flashers on in rt land doing 45. A big truck hit me from behind doing 85. After all said and done they figured out he was having a heart attack . I went on to the shoulder and further to the right into the grass. When he hit me i heard pieces of his truck going past my truck. His tanks both exploded and he and his passenger died. I never evan got a word from cops about me being at fault. I didnt get a scratch on me. Of course it scared me to death. I should have sued but didnt. His company lawyer called and questioned me he said there will be a law suit against me. ? I siad if you do sue im coming at you with both barrels and i.ll sue for all i can get. Never heard from them again. Im glad your a safe driver. Take care be safe

    I think professionals holding other professionals in the same field accountable is nothing to be ashamed of Dave. The one thing I would have heartburn with though is having the guy get fired immediately. I feel like too many companies would go straight to dropping a driver for something like this instead of trying to re-train him. This seems like a teachable moment and an opportunity to work with this guy to make him a better driver. Granted, if the dude has a history of safety violations and his company has tried to train him then he deserves to get thrown out on his ass. And don't get me wrong, regardless of whether they can him or not he definitely deserves a fine/suspension/reprimand and possibly even a traffic citation depending on the local laws. But if you just fire him and make no attempt to correct the bad behavior he'll just end up at another company down the road and eventually he'll land at a company that is super sketch and doesn't take violations like this seriously, that's when he'll end up killing someone.

    • @FarikoUnited1
      @FarikoUnited1 Год назад +8

      Given that story in the video I would hope they got fired immediately as this driver apparently had no remorse and just continued right back to using the phone.
      I think anyone who has been driving long enough(car, truck, etc...) has had close calls but you dont just immediately go back to doing the unsafe stuff.
      I know for example in my case one of my closest calls was a right turn on red where I committed before I saw an extra car and they had to react to me and stop. I immediately pulled into a shopping center and parked and had to kind of debrief myself for what happened and how I had missed them etc... and just kind of breath and I didnt come close to nearly killing anyone.

      @FarikoUnited1 Agreed, this is gross negligence to the point retraining isn't going to do a danm thing anyways. If I almost killed someone like this because my face was buried in my phone the last thought I'd have to to put it up to my face ever again, let alone 5 minutes later

    I called on a Schneider driver 4 years ago. He was coming out of the rest area just north of Cincinnati not paying attention at all and just pulled out in front of me at 25 mph while I was doing 65. I needed new pants after that mess. I had no escape either as the shoulder had trucks on it which I would have barreld into since we were at the midpoint of the ramp and cars to my left. He decided that since there was heavy traffic he wasn't about to wait and just sent it into my lane. Smoked the breaks as I came to a damn near stop. He was barely speeding up which made it so much worse. Missed him by a foot. If I was heavy I probably wouldn't be here.
    Also Mesilla Valley is a terrible company with a lot of shtty drivers. I've seen more than a few almost take people out by doing stupid things. No issue calling them out.

    Being rear-ended by a truck is a great and very real fear of my mine. I’ve seen the videos of distracted truckers demolishing trucks and cars stopped in the road. I’ve seen trucks rear-end other trucks. A driver at my last company died because a trucker with a seacan and no rear lights cut him off, causing him to rear-end the container which flattened the cab all the way to the trailer.
    A lot of drivers out here don’t have the maturity to pay attention, they shouldn’t be out here, and they’re gonna hurt or kill somebody eventually. In my opinion, infractions involving the phone (texting while driving) should be an immediate suspension of license, even just temporary for the first offense. Second offense, completely revoked.

      Not sure about rules in the US but here in Sweden holding a phone in your hand say texting is illegal, think it is ok to talk with handsfree but heck a call can be very distracting to, and as Dave pointed out it only takes a split second for things to go terribly wrong. And yes as a trucker we do train and have to have a special permit to drive, that is supposed to show that we are professionals but sometimes i do wonder.

    I'm not a truck driver but one day I was heading to Walmart to do some shopping. A truck driver ended up turning in front of me instead of waiting maybe 10 seconds at most to turn safely. The car I owned at the time did not have ABS cause of the year of the car it was not a mandatory standard at the time. I was lucky I was able to stop in time if I did not I would have went under the trailer.
    Semi Truck + Trailer is deadly if you not paying attention to what's going on around you. In the past I used to work in the fast food field one of the managers I knew at another store lost her life to a semi truck. The semi truck did something which caused her car to rip in half she was alive when the crash happened but was in serious condition. But she ended up passing away on the ER table.

    Hey Dave, I got my CDL last year and joined a company but during the orientation I started getting freaked out about being with a stranger out on the highway. So I made the decision to leave and go home. A few months later I started with another company, I went through orientation and was doing good at driving, getting my confidence up. Then when they found me a training to go out with, I started freaking out again. For some reason I can't get past the thought of being out there in a truck with a complete stranger. So I decided to leave again and I haven't tried it since. How did you get past that?

    • @Sky1360
      @Sky1360 Год назад +2

      I can’t speak for Dave but I just finished training at my first company. I felt the same way. You kinda just gotta push yourself. Some companies only have you in someone else’s truck for about 2 weeks (Schneider and Swift)
      My company (Steven’s Transport) is 4-7 weeks. Depending on how long it takes to drive 240 hours.

    • @Sky1360
      @Sky1360 Год назад +2

      So if you went to Schneider or swift you’d only have to deal with it for 2 weeks.

    • @supergrogg
      @supergrogg Год назад

      The only advice I can think of is to find out beforehand everything about the trainer; how many years have they been driving and been a trainer,. ask as many personal questions ( married, in the service, etc,..) that make you feel comfortable with them. My company was two weeks but i did another two weeks to get another perspective from a different trainer. If training is important to you, then get er done!

    On a serious note, though, I feel you on everything you said. I get so irritated when I’m governed and have to deal with lane jumping because a driver in front of me can’t put their phone down long enough to hold their speed. If a truck is constantly speeding up and slowing down, I guarantee 9 times out of 10 when I overtake I see them dicking around on their phone.
    QUESTION: What camera do you use on your head? I think I heard you say you use GoPro? I use DJI currently and love it, but the battery seems iffy for time when doing my shoots for my own channel. I had to ditch GoPro because it seems like GoPro overheated way too easily, and they don’t make a smaller camera for head use (seems like they aim theirs mainly at folks wearing helmets).

I was sideswiped in my car and run off the road by a truck driver who was so distracted when he looked up if he hadn’t taken my lane he would have plowed through the line of cars stopped in front of him at the red light we were coming up on. My car was totaled and the police never found him because we couldn’t get solid ID on the tractor. But no one was hurt and I was able to get a nicer car later that year. So, all’s good 😊

    If it's you getting rear-ended by another truck while stopped...there's a better chance you'll come out of it okay, but the driver who rear-ends you will not survive. I remember passing by a crash scene about 6-7 years ago on westbound I-70 at the rest area near Dayton, OH. A trucker fell asleep while driving, then crashed into a bunch of trucks that were parked along the off-ramp to the rest area. I didn't see it happen, but I passed by while they were recovering the truck. The hood area was caved in all the way to the bulkhead between the front and sleeper areas. It was pretty obvious from what damage I saw that the driver didn't survive.

    I once saw someone reading an eBook on their tablet in front of the wheel while driving merging onto I-390 North from I-90 in Henrietta NY. I was saying it isn't going to feel good when you eat your tablet when you slam into something, and the airbag explodes it into your face at 100-200 mph which is what the internet says they deploy at.
    You definitely did the right thing reporting them. If they really grasped what they almost did, they wouldn't still be on the phone. They probably had that invincible nothing will ever happen ego problem and needed to not only be fired but have their regular class-D license revoked too. A semi might be a huge weapon when used that negligently, but a passenger vehicle at full speed can definitely do some major carnage as well. Let's say they were going to probably lose their job someday. Either by someone reporting them, or a very serious crash that hopefully didn't involve a coroner.
    I watch crash videos and there are only 2 that sincerely freaked me out. One was at night from someone with no lights on and someone turned in front of them with a massive impact with literally zero inclination even rewinding the video looking for it. The other was a semi probably doing around 70 going down an off ramp without even letting off still on the accelerator bowling through all the stopped cars and tossing them making them unrecognizable from the damage.

    Near by where I live the interstate goes from four lanes down to three. Which causes a bottle neck since people wait until the last second to get over. Everyone who lives here though knows it's a bottle neck. So even though the speed limit is 70. Most people approach around 55 or 60. A few months ago coming home we're going with traffic around 55 in the center-right lane. We are close enough to see that traffic is in fact crawling. So everyone is slowing down cause you can see it. As we're about to queue up with the rest of traffic we noticed a semi come rocketing up behind us doing I would say about 70. They swerved across two lanes into the emergency lane some how missing everyone and not rolling it. I genuinely thought either I was about to die. Or was going to see someone else die at that moment. Always! Pay! Attention! To! The! Road!

In fact, there was an accident just about a month ago, in Licking county Ohio, where there was an accident on I-70 on November 14 where a trucker rear ended a car and charter bus that was carry Tusky Valley High School band members. The truck hit and then ran over the SUV, and then rear-ended the bus. The 3 adult chaperones in the SUV were killed as well as 3 of the students on the bus. The truck and the bus burst into flames immediately upon impact.
    There's been no official cause that I know of, but, my personal opinion is that the trucker was on his phone and didn't see the stopped traffic.
    So I wouldn't fret about calling this guy's company or getting him fired.

    I had a driver purposely slow down to keep me in the right lane that was closed ahead, a true azzwhole, I stabbed my brakes hard so he'd overshoot so I could get over behind and he continued messing with me several times through the construction zone..even brake checking me at the end of the zone but that caused him to lose momentum and I kept mine by changing to the right and gaining the advantage, when I passed his cab on the right he noticed me recording a video of him,his cab and all the numbers I needed to report him, funny thing is he had a leased tractor so I called his company and also the leasing company.. Double fuck up for him, I used the icc numbers and called both within a few minutes..I always make confirmation calls later to make certain things aren't swept under the rug, not good to piss off the senior and seasoned driver for no reason

    I know exactly what you are talking about. Nobody is paying attention to what they are doing behind the wheel. Cars, semi’s doesn’t matter don’t stay on their side of the double yellow line on a 2 lane road. Every day my 10 minute commute 5 miles one way I’m almost get hit by an oncoming vehicle across the yellow line in my lane. It’s some scary crap out there today. Then the interstate is another conversation. A lot people think it’s the Daytona 500.
